3-3-5 and 4-2-5 Defenses

Recommended Posts

In the game, if you select one of these schemes as your base Defensive philosphy you will suffer penalties if you use the other during a game. In reality these are basically the same scheme, relying on heavy pressure from all over the field and similar player types in the secondary....especially at the safety spots. I feel at best these two schemes should be interchangable in terms of bonus/penalty for their usage. In other words if you get a bonus for 3-3-5, you should get it for 4-2-5 as well. At worst you should never suffer a penalty when using one of them, if the other is your primary scheme, since they are so similar. Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

I understand your point. That said, the way the game is setup is that if you pick a 4-man front D all 3-man fronts will be hindered. This does make sense since NT is such a specialized position you have to practice that a bunch. The best way to look at the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 in the game is that they are really quarter D's for the 3-4 and 4-3 respectively. Yes, I know there are a few teams that run one of those schemes in real life, but they generally don't run both due to it being really difficult to practice both effectively enough.

Heehee, this could become a fun debate on schemes, but I understand now why the game handles that way. There really isn't a lot of difference outside of the front shades when a 3-3-5 team shifts to a four man front. Typically you would just slide your NG offset weak, move the strongside DE to a 4 technique (inside the OT) and walk up the Sam LB to a 9 (OS the TE) The Mike and Will then just move inside. I can see not being able to be proficient at both, but I don't think there should be a penalty since really only the Strongside DE has to learn two varying techniques when he moves down inside......(In my scenario) I know true 4-2 teams will not normally cover/shade the center, but it is a frequent tactic to get an odd look up front and to keep the Center off your backside LB. I know the game can't account for this much detail at this stage though so it has to be more cut and dried.
LOL, I think he was joking since this incarnation of BYU isn't very good he needs 13 players on defense to cover them all.
Upon further review, after giving up 3 40+ TD passes to Houston in game 2, I might need 15 on Defense.....It's going to be a long F'n Season in Provo!!
