Dumber Than a Bag of Hammers

Recommended Posts

Are the recruits just plain stupid? Admittedly, I've only run through a couple of seasons and looked at a couple of classes, but it seems that the overwhelming majority of recruits can't even manage more than a 2.5 GPA (about a 'C/C+')' average in high school. Surely, there must be some decent high school student-athletes out there who could manage at least a 3.5. How the heck are all these dumb jocks going to succeed in college? I suppose there's always SEC schools, but still... :D

Well played wareagle. :) I guess I could see this high school gpa thing making a difference when it comes to suspensions for academics. It would be nice to see more of a curve with high school gpas. There needs to be a lot more high 2's and 3+ gpas for these high school kids. Higher high school gpas might also alleviate the difficulty people are having with all of the academic probation problems we're seeing in the game. Higher high school gpas should theoretically lead to higher college gpas and fewer suspensions for academics.

Im here in Cali. And I coach Freshman football. Unfortunately, the GPAs are about right. At least for public schools. This past season we really struggled with grades during the season. Its been like that around California the past 4-5 years. But private schools are alot different. Maybe Arlie should base them on this. A private school like DeLa Salle (10 mins away from me) should have players with higher GPAs come out than public schools.
did you sort the players by GPA? I had the same thoughts as you especially since I tend to play as UVA certainly a school with a high academic standing, while I do agree that GPAs seem a little low I think on balance its okay.
I did sort the players by GPA and noticed that a rough estimate meant that at least 75-80% of all recruits were sitting at 2.5 or lower. I might expect football players to have a generally lower GPA than the rest of the student population, but this number just seemed a bit extreme to me.
I think it is a little unfair to lump ALL public schools into this. My high school was a public school and while we were no powerhouse, we did make it to regionals my senior year and put 7 players on DII schools while I was in high school. Of those 7 players only 1 I would call flat out dumb. 2 of them were top of their class and the others had much higher GPA's than average as well. In my school it seemed the less gifted role players were the ones much more likely to struggle with a low GPA.

Its funny you say that. Because I think my squad this year was completely the opposite. My two most displined players where honor students but they werent gifted athletes. They just always did what you told them to, and never made mistakes. Now my studs on defense, were awful students, but so athletic and agressive they made up for their mistakes. Not saying that you cant be both smart and atheltic, I'm just giving an example. My original point was, maybe arlie, should look into school academics and so when recruits are released they have closer to real life GPAs. (If thats possible to do) I already made it so you will see more players from HS powerhouses. But I get your point. Maybe Im just bitter because I had such a struggle with my ids this season. We were 6-3, made the playoffs, but were an awful group to coach. No discipline at all.
