AND YOU’RE NEW CHAMPION OF THE WORLD!

Four years are the difference between GAMMA being one of the best MMA companies in the world, to being the absolute top dog. 2000 especially saw the rise of this great MMA promotion as it sky rocketed into the public conscience. With the addition of a featherweight and women’s division, GAMMA made it clear that they intended to be the best in every division.

But in four years, only one man has stayed the very best in his division.

Sean Morrison has beaten every contender that has come his way, including Beau Gorshin, Bruce Stevens, Benny Danare and countless others. While many names increased their fame, and while their may still be other names in the company that are bigger than Sean Morrison, he is the only GAMMA Warrior to remain undefeated. With a scheduled fight coming up against Jake “The Natural” Keane, many believe if he wins this fight, then he has cleared the Lightweight Division of worthy contenders.

That being said, many of the champions in GAMMA have come very close to clearing their division. For four years, the names James Foster and Julio Reguiero came extremely close.

James Foster went all the way to 2002, defeating the likes Raul Hughes, Tim Boyer, Jack Cobblepott and Christopher Sharpe. However the world was shocked when Sylvester Collins, who GAMMA had signed as a relative unknown, went on an unbeaten streak consisting of 7 wins, all the way to a title shot, in which he out grounded and pounded the King of Ground and Pound in 2003.

Julio Regueiro did very much the same, the only person pushing Julio to a full five rounds being Josh Aldasario. However in 2002, following the acquisition of Carlos da Guia, the bought between the two was inevitable. And Carlos da Guia managed to get a TKO decision in the third round.

The middleweight title has changed hands a few times in the four years. Neil Napier started as champion, but since then it has changed hands to Matthew Dean, Buddy Garner, back to Neil Napier, and then back to Buddy Garner.

And finally, the last of the five original champions from 1999. Zvinomir Asanovic was destined to rule his division before he was stripped of the title for testing positive on a drug test. A tournament followed which would be won by Mike Watson. The only glitch in Mike’s record from then is a defeat to Anthony LeToussier, but Mike managed to win his title back in the rematch.

Then their was the two new divisions. In 2000 Matt Trip revealed to the world that GAMMA would have a Featherweight and Women’s division. And while the women had to build up their reputation on GAMMA shows, Matt Trip introduced to the world the likes of current Featherweight Champion Philip Ziskie, Sammy Gaffigan and Luiz Machado. All three would become big names in the GAMMA world. As for the women, Layla Holmes jumped to the top of the original GAMMA women, becoming the first and too this date, only GAMMA Women’s Champion, when she won it in 2001 in a great match with Pamela O’Neill.

And now, in 2003, Matt Tripp, along with Ricky Slater, who many say got his job in 2000 because of being Mark Wallace’s nephew, are planning to revolutionize MMA again and make it even more mainstream. 2003 sees the start of a new concept in GAMMA. A Reality TV show where 16 people get to fight for two GAMMA contracts! With this show dubbed GAMMA Reality, GAMMA hope to make new superstars and cement themselves as the top MMA promotion in the world.

GAMMA REALITY – Episode 1

The First episode of GAMMA Reality hit the TV waves last night, where Buddy Garner and Janinha went head to head with Neil Napier and Layla Holmes as they picked their four Middleweight men and their four women. Neil Napier and Layla Holmes got the first pick from the women and picked Nina Belle. Garner and Janinha’s first female pick would be Kelly Andrews. As for the men, Garner and Janinha got the first pick and picked Bill Brown, with Napier and Holmes picking Esteban Vega. The teams eventually lined up as follows;

Team Napier and Holmes aka Team Tenacity

Nina Belle, Samantha Cassie, Alexa Young, Jessa Villanueva

Esteban Vega, Andrew Rush, Stephan de Winter, Marlon John

Team Garner and Janinha aka Strike and Snap

Kelly Andrews, Gianna Russo, Helena Broderick, Leona Deschanel

Bill Brown, Jonathan Parr, Woody Fierstein, Billy Russell

The fighters would then go to a nice luxury house which had seemingly been tailor made for the fighters. Some of the men, like Vega and Marlon John tried to share rooms with the ladies to no avail. Andrew Rush and Jonathan Parr quickly became friends due to their British link. And right from the beginning a off hand comment by Leona Deschanel about Samantha Cassie was heard by Samantha, who didn’t take it lying down.

Team Strike and Snap had control of the first match pick, and set up the match up between Muay Thai competitor Kelly Andrews and Jessa Villanueva who little is known about, but both of her trainers commented on her incredible work ethic.10 years Jesse’s senior, Kelly went into the fight seemingly over looking the enigma Jesse Villanueva.

Neil Napier: She showed the work ethic that Layla and I were talking about.

Janinha: Kelly had the first round, dominated it in fact. Then she let Jessa get control and keep it for the rest of the fight.

Jessa Villanueva: Kelly underestimated me, and I just love to prove people wrong, It feels good to get my first MMA win.

Kelly Andrews: That was bulls**t. She didn’t even try to knock me out or make me submit. She just pressed me against the cage. That’s all she did.

Matt Tripp: Jesse won, but I wasn’t impressed with either ladies. Their’s a reason the likes of Janinha, Layla Holmes and Pamela O’Neill are so far ahead of the rest. Ladies need to catch up with the best and close the gap.

GAMMA Reality – Episode 2

Janinha was clearly not happy with the performance of Kelly Andrews, and took her away from the group to have a Muay Thai sparing session. Kelly Andrews complained about the training after a hard fought match, which ended in a shouting match.

Also Marlon John stepped up to his coach, angry that he was picked last, because in his words he could knock out anyone in this competition, including Napier himself. Napier just calmly walked away as the other men in his team held him back.

People started to question Jonathan Parr’s motives as he became close with first Andrew Rush and then Samantha Cassie in the house. That being said, Garner and Janinha soon had Jonathan picked out as their favourite. Which seemed to make Jonathan’s team doubt her even more!

Napier and Layla had the pick for the first men’s match up. Neil surprised everyone when his first match pick was Marlon John against Woody Fierstein, a much fancied participant before this competition began. Buddy seemed especially happy with the pick.

Marlon John seemed to be rubbing a lot of people in the house the wrong way, with practical jokes and generally jumping down people’s throats for nothing. Many in the house wanted Marlon John to lose. Even Neil Napier said, “Let’s see if the kid can back up the checks his mouths been writing!”

>He can't get it though, John defends it and pulls away from the grapple entirely.

>Fierstein takes a nasty-looking kick to the inside of the knee.

>We pass the halfway mark of this round.

>A showdown where they both exchange strikes only results in a stalemate.

>I'd say that was definitely 10-9 in favour of John.

>I'd say that was definitely 10-9 in favour of John.

>The judges' scores are now being announced.

>Judge #1 has scored it 30-27 John.

>Judge #2: 30-27 John.

>Judge #3 has scored it 30-27 John.

>The winner, by unanimous decision, is Marlon John!

>Official Result: Marlon 'The Punisher' John defeats Woody 'Buzz Saw' Fierstein (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Average.

Neil Napier: I’ll admit, the kids got some talent.

Layla Holmes: I hate to admit it, but Woody was outclassed.

Billy Russell: Why is it the a**holes are always so talented!

Woody Fierstein: I don’t think I’ve ever gone three rounds and been out classed for the whole time before. I came into this wanting to win the whole tournament, but I have to hold my hands up. He beat me.

Marlon John: I came here to get the job done. Lets see anyone doubt my skills now.

Matt Tripp: Now that was impressive. Woody’s going to need his leg checked out.

Neil Napier: He still didn’t knock Woody out though!

GAMMA Reality – Episode 3

The show kicked off with Marlon John being very brash and loud about his victory. Even the very calm Andrew Rush got annoyed and into a heated argument with him. Marlon John came very close to aggravating Andrew Rush to hitting him but Jonathan Parr was there to make sure Andrew Rush didn’t get himself thrown off the show.

Speaking of Jonathan Parr, he spoke to his team during their training session and said he’s dedicated to Team Strike and Snap. His team seemed to except this apart from Leona Deschanel.

Layla Holmes got to pick the next fight, and she picked their first female pick Nina “Liberty” Belle. And the All Out Striker would be put up against one of the older competitors, German Helena Broderick. Layla said she was looking forward to an all out slug fest.

At the Weigh-In, Matt Tripp announced that because of the last two fights going to decision, he was going to give $10,000 to competitors if they managed to finish fights by knockout, technical knockout or submission. He told the competitors that GAMMA is about trying to finish the fight.

Nina Belle: I came to finish people anyway, $10,000 is just icing on the cake.

GAMMA Reality – Episode 4

The Show started with Matt Tripp and the Team Tenacity coach’s speaking about how impressed in Nina Belle’s performance they were. Even Marlon John seemed impressed in his Marlon John world.

Leona Deschanel attempted to turn Team Tenacity against each other by telling Alexa Young that Samantha Cassie was giving their training tips and match picking strategy away. Alexa did confront Samantha Cassie, who denied the accusations but the seed of doubt was now clearly there.

Marlon John was up to his usual tricks, this time with Billy Russell. However it seemed that the house was learning to deal with Marlon John as Billy Russell quickly walked away. Napier attempted to talk to Marlon John, but the general feeling was it went in one ear and out the other.

Napier got to pick the next fight. He picked Esteban Vega to face Billy Russell. Vega and Russell had a respectful stand-off. Buddy seemed happy with the pick again, as Billy Russell was clearly the best BJJ fighter in his team and he spoke about how Vega would make a mistake and Russell would capitalize quickly and efficiently.

CO-MAIN EVENT

Anthony “Live Wire” LeToussier vs. Christian “The Tiger” Mountfield

32 – 31

6’1 – 5’11

Senneterre, Quebec – Ann Arbor, Michigan

Kick Boxing – Ground and Pound

14-3 – 12-4

Anthony LeToussier: I’ve held the title once, for a short time. It’s like feeding someone who’s starving a mere morsel. This time there will be no stopping me.

Christian Mountfield: We’ll see about that.

Anthony LeToussier took 1999 and 2000 by storm, taking full advantage of Zvonimir being MIA. He impressed in the tournament to find a new champion and dethroned Mike Watson with a highlight reel head kick. Now after losing the title back to Mike Watson, Anthony wants the rubber match.

Christian Mountfield however has remained near the top but never broken through. But he feels that this match up will be the making of the Tiger. With great wrestling skills, he has the antidote to the Live Wire’s venom. However Christian Mountfield has found it hard to finish fights recently, which will give Anthony ample opportunity for another head kick knockout.

Christian Mountfield: It’s simply, if you can grab him and take him down, then he’s in a world he’s not comfortable with. I’m not going to stand with him. So he better hope he’s been practising his sprawl.

Anthony LeToussier: I’ve been working on a lot Christian. And at the end of the night, you’ll have to admit I was the better man.
