I am also wary of names that are identical.

If you look at most of the "reference" names, they're similar, but not identical.

So when someone says that, say

"Whisky Jack" is the same as Whisky Jack, the folktale, I'm thinking

Blackjack Bailey = Bailey's

Whisky Jack = Jack Daniel's

You know...similar, but not identical.

edit: Also, most of these pop culture rerferences comes from Adam's own experiences and tastes. Hence why there's so many Joss Whedon references, or Pixies or British/US sitcom stuff.

Having a random "ancient native american mythology reference' when there are no other supporting references makes me think that this is cooincidence, not intent. My thought is that it's far more likely for these to be alcohol references (what programmer DOESN'T use alcohol references :D) rather then some random outlier.

In all honesty, Whisky Jack might just be a random name. Like how Jack Bruce turned out to just be a random name generator rather then any actual pop culture reference.

Saying something is a reference to LXG is sort of missing the point of LXG. Alan Quatermain was the star of King Solomon's Mines and several other novels written by H. Rider Haggard (best porn name ever, btw). Whiskey Jack was also the americanized name of the trickster figure in Neil Gaiman's American Gods, so it's not that obscure a reference.

I am not sure about this one. Is Adam a fan of the NFL? And if he is would he take the name of a QB from the 1960's? And why not name a character after Y.A. Title?:p

It only works if you remember that his brother's name is Brett, the surname of another famous Packer QB. not sure it's true though.

I always wondered if the Bumfholes are references to Michael Hickenbottom (aka Shawn Michaels), based on their similarly embarrassing names. Another possibility is 80's worker Buck Zumhofe (can you believe that didn't become a household name?) based on flipping Zimmy's first and last initials.

true but the key for both look and name is the LXG version played by Sean. its not a reference to solomon's mine.. its a reference to LXG which is itself a reference to other works. but you cannot just skip the middle without losing connection to Mr. Bond :)

I know virtually nothing about American sports, so if there are any references in the game to real life players then it's purely coincidental.

Dan DaLay - Refers to Speedy Gonzales cries of "¡Ándale! ¡Ándale!"

I think that wins the prize for most bizarre suggestion so far. Dan DaLay is a reference \ quasi in-joke, and quite a cheeky one at that, but it's got nothing to do with phonetic spellings of Speedy Gonzales' catchphrases - I haven't quite gone to those depths of obscurity yet.

Echo is Echo, but a male version of her. The bio confirms it, person is a mystery, uses lots of marital arts moves,

Don't be too sure - Faith in-game seems like a straight reference to Faith in Buffy (even down to the ref in her bio about a missing surname) but Adam confirmed it wasn't a deliberate reference.

I'm not saying it's not right, but Echo as a codename for a mysterious character is right up there with Alpha, Delta and so on.

I just accidentally found something that is almost certainly of no relation to how Rafael Ruiz's name came about, but is brilliant nonetheless. From a LastFM bio

"Los del Río (Spanish for "those from the river", referring to the Guadalquivir or the Guadaira) is a Spanish music duo, consisting of Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz"

So now we all know the shocking truth... "The Mexican Pitbull" Rafael Ruiz is actually the genius behind the Macarena, a song that I continue to insist be adopted as the Mexican national anthem, and danced to by crowds at the start of every lucha event. :)

>Marshal Dillon

>Robert Dillon

>"Bob" Dillon

>Bob Dylan

I always figured his name came from the main character from Gunsmoke - Marshal Matt Dillon. Could be a combination of the two...

Bobbie Dylan obviously takes her name from Bob Dylan (too).
