What grinds your gears?

Is he the guy who is on the cover of all those romance novels? If so, he can hurt my butt anytime.

Seriously, I don't know who that is.

He's the Italian footballer who was fouled in the last minute of the 2006 World Cup second round match against Australia. Del Piero went on to score the resulting penalty (and in the end, the tournament - ironically via a Grosso penalty in the shootout). Australians (and people who just hated Italy in general) were outraged that it wasn't Lucas Neill's fault he's a clumsy oaf, and felt aggrieved that top 5 team had knocked Australia out, and I thought Australians hated Italians ever since because of that. :p

Lucky it didn't happen in rugby or swimming; there might've been a war. ¬_¬

Why do people even watch the Olympics when they complain so much about it?

I think that's one of my bigger gripes...Why watch something over and over if you can't stand what's on the TV?

Well I complain about it and I never watch it. I find the Olympics to be a waste of television time, granted in the Summer there is not much on television but still.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the history lesson. I have no problem with Australia losing in soccer as it's an evil foreign sport that has no place here anyway. One might even say it grinds my gears. :p

Really? I hate it when Australia loses at anything lol

I enjoy soccer but what makes it unwatchable for me sometimes is the amount of stageing or diving for free kicks that happens during a game that really grinds my gears

Something else that grinds my gears: When people do that thing where they try to be subtle about something in a blatant way. My brain has stopped functioning and I can't remember the proper words what it's called, but you know what I mean.

That "I've just "acquired" series 2 of The Wire from an online "store"". Or "You should get *coughdownloadcough* this album".

You mean download it illegally from the internet. You know that, we know that, you know we know that. You're not funny, or clever, you're the reason we can't have nice things. You're the reason PC games are all badly-worked console ports with X-Box 360 graphics from 1938. You're the reason everything legitimate customers own is on a Cloud somewhere so we can't access our own property half the time and it's DRMed to hell. You're the reason it costs half a mortgage to go to the cinema.

The only thing worse than a pirate, is a pirate who tries to be "subtly obvious" about it. Look at me, I'm so cool, watch as I cleverly hint at my illicit activities in an obvious fashion so that everyone knows what I mean but I haven't actually said it so that makes it perfectly ok.

Seriously? It's $7.50 to see a movie here...$10 if I go to Tinseltown which has stadium seating and an even bigger screen. Hell, concessions are more expensive than tickets really. $4.50 for a large drink with free refills and $5 for a bucket of popcorn.

I don't know, maybe I'm lucky, but the movies here have never been outrageously priced.

Same here...besides...What about before Piratebay and other such sites?

What about before the internet?

Our ancestors went through the recession and Pirating was down out in the sea.

The truth is, there are ALWAYS going to be people who do stuff they shouldn't. The other reason prices are outrageous on certain things is because people are greedy.

Why do we need 1 BILLION different kinds of the SAME ITEM? Why? Because people are always trying to make a quick buck.

Rock concerts 20 years ago were mostly free with T-shirts costing 10-15 bucks. What happened to that? GREED. Now you have to pay $300 bucks to sit 20 miles away to watch a band that can't sing worth shit and pay $60 bucks for a shirt they won't sign because they can't be bothered to interact with their fans.

Or you have actors who want to be paid $2 billion dollars for a movie that sucks but no one will admit too.

Or

A sports player who goes out and plays the game, and becomes a role model for children only to want to be paid the highest amount in history for a half ass job and doesn't care a thing about the sport he's playing, but more for the women he can bang, and the materialistic crap he can buy.

$7.50? Wow that is cheap, the average from where I am, Rhode Island and SE Massachusetts area, is $10.50. When they have cheap ticket days it is $6.50.

I still can't complain though, because I remember one when I was in NYC, Times Square to be exact, and they were showing Spider Man 2 and the tickets there were $14.50. I nearly crapped my pants at the site of that price. Needless to say I did not see Spider Man 2 that day.

Oh the old days, down out in the sea, pirating away!!

The truth is, there are ALWAYS going to be people who do stuff they shouldn't. The other reason prices are outrageous on certain things is because people are greedy.

Well... Greed and inflation.

Why do we need 1 BILLION different kinds of the SAME ITEM? Why? Because people are always trying to make a quick buck.

Do you like Captain Crunch? How about with just the Crunch Berries, or without the Berries, or perhaps you want just the Blue berries, or.... Hey, people want what they want.

I honestly don't remember Rock Concerts being free, even back as far as well... Not in my lifetime anyways.

I hear Madonna's prices went way up, and are probably going to cost $300.00 a pop. She's one of the most expensive, and the only person I could think of that fits your ... fit?

Or you have actors who want to be paid $2 billion dollars for a movie that sucks but no one will admit too.

Especially if the movie sucks, because the only reason anyone will see it is because of the big names in it, but.... Tom Cruise (for example) only made 75m over a 12 month period... Which is combined with the movie sells (did like 700m), etc. People make more if the movie does better through other means outside of how much they initially made. This is money that probably wouldn't have been made if it stared Woody Allen instead (for example).

Or

A sports player who goes out and plays the game, and becomes a role model for children only to want to be paid the highest amount in history for a half ass job and doesn't care a thing about the sport he's playing, but more for the women he can bang, and the materialistic crap he can buy.

Your talking about specific people it appears... Probably all those Baseball stars, trying to hit home runs? Maybe they will form a dream team for the Olympics..

Honestly, I don't condone it, but piracy isn't why prices jump up. Inflation is why prices go up.

Two of the biggest things that get pirated are music and movies... Well, I pay less now for both then I did 10 or 15 years ago. I could actually make the argument that Piracy pulls prices down. I know that's not true though... The only thing I feel is true is that all this... Meaning all the internet, computers and other electronic and gaming and... well everything I think of when I think of "Technology", goes down (except when it's brand new). Things are happening so fast as opposed to say... 20 years ago, that you can buy a top of the line computer or even build one today, and within' two or three years someone will have one twice as powerful.

They have to sell things high to start with, while it is hot. No matter what it is, a new game (TEW2013!!! YEAH!!!!!), a new game system, an advanced computer, better DVD type (Blue Ray, 3d, etc.). 3D TV's... It is all expensive when they come out, then as time goes by they become less expensive. The 1500 dollar computer I bought back around 1998/99 isn't worth 25 bucks now (Just as example).. Although I could probably get 10 or 20 bucks if I really tried, from the 15" monitor.

Anyways... Everyone that has any type of business that isn't ridiculously small, has theft. Be it virtual, or physical... The difference is physical theft actually cost someone some money, where virtual really doesn't, unless you believe they would have bought it if they couldn't steal it, which I sincerely doubt (not at a high price anyways). SO in retrospect, far as programs and the like go, I agree there is some greed there... In all honesty, I think quite a few of these programs running around selling for hundreds of dollars that people are stealing, would probably sell a whole lot more if they weren't hundreds of dollars to buy.

There is also the fact that people will turn to a "free" or cheaper program that does essentially the same thing, even if it's much sloppier, or not as pretty. To give some example's, look up music mixing programs, and compare the reviews of them, and see how much the price difference varies... when an unknown does better, or gets better reviews and the prices range from 800 to 20, to free. It's unreal how many programs for 30 bucks do the same exact job, and sometimes better then one for 500 bucks. The difference... Name brand.

well try $18-$19 each here in Melbourne and last week cost me $29 for 2 large cokes and a large popcorn.

$14 for a ticket to see the Dark Knight Rises, plus $6.20 for a large popcorn and $5.40 for a medium coke. So it's not AS bad over here, but still pretty ridiculous.

Especially considering you can get the same amount of popcorn in a supermarket for $4, and the same amount of coke for $3 (and that's the stuff in plastic bottles. Having worked in a restaurant, I know that the actual syrup stuff they use in places like that is insanely cheap). Hell, you can get an entire meal in McDonalds for under $8.

<p>What grinds my gears... Since we are talking about movies, going to a movie; apologize ahead if some said this; and right before the movie starts it pretty much states "hey moron, you know your are popular, this is a dark theater and besides some lights you can see for walking there should be no other lights or sounds coming from your phone, so turn it off!" now I have never answered my phone or even looked at it. In the past 48 hours I have been told that my opinions “wrong” because I hadn’t read a certain book; that my logic was convoluted with no explanation as to what made it so; had my education called into question for no other reason than that my opinions were “wrong”; told that I had obviously been brainwashed by the conservative media (which is interesting, as here in the US most people consider the media to be a tool of the Liberal agenda…); and finally had all of my thoughts, opinions, and beliefs invalidated because of the place I was born.

All of this was told to me by a man I had never met (we share a mutual friend on Facebook) who also knows nothing about me other than what he can see on my profile: That I was born in North Dakota, live in California, and that my profile picture is Dr. Strangelove.

I didn’t know that defending the beliefs of Ayn Rand could bring out so much anger in a person. Amazing that he didn’t belittle my race and question my sexuality as well.

Wow.

On the subject of pirating and grinding gears...

I have a "friend" (who, in truth I havent seen since like...freshman year of high school, but you know...Facebook) who is big into just about every cause that could come along. Like Sean Penn but without any accolades, or fame, or money. Or hair. It's always "99%! Banks suck! Corporations suck! Obama sucks! Romney sucks! ect ect ect."

While I do not share those opinions, I do not begrudge him holding them. Thats not what this post is about.

What did grind my gears was a post he made on FB a couple of weeks ago, which, paraphrasing was basically "SuchAndSuchMusicGroup is so underground I can't even find any of their music on Pirate Bay for download! Ugh. Sigh."

And yes, first....hipster jerk. But his hats proved that, so it wasnt really news to me.

BUT REALLY? You spend every waking hour it seems reminding people you are fighting for the little guy, walking in marches or posting on FB to talk down and slam everyone who might disagree with your views. And now you are brazenly whining about stealing from the little guy???? Are the band members who arent popular enough to even be regularly pirated not part of the 99%? Maybe you are just a self entitled wad of uselessness.

Instead of reaching your hand into some struggling artists pocket, take a couple days off walking the roads protesting everything to hold down a real job and unass a $20.

Cannot stand hypocrites.

Sure people being idiots is kinda funny for a while but after living on this earth for over 25 years it starts getting less and less funny each year. I'm very much a misanthropist and have been all of my life when I think about it. Also when I realise that a person I've met is, well, how'd you say.. A few leftovers short of a bread pudding.. You know, not all the dots are on the dice. A few dollars short of a paycheck.. A few leaves short of a bush..

I get so uncomfortable. It's the most disturbing feeling to me, I just want to get away from that person as quickly as possible.

I usually try to avoid this thread as much as possible since I know that I'd just fill it up with me going on long tirades for page after page after page.. If I get the momentum going. :p

wait what? the Olympics has been going for 3000 years buts it only 2012? what does this mean? double rainbow.

It means that some people are really, really stupid. Stupid enough to believe that time started in AD1 and nothing existed before that. Which is ridiculous; especially if you're Christian because it'd mean admitting that the entire Old Testament couldn't possibly have happened.
