The Video Game Thread

That opinion I can get behind. I feel the same way about other games myself.

I think the biggest problem is people were hyping the game in their mind to be bigger than it is. I did that. I'm infatuated with space and space travel...So I get what it's like to be let down.

It's sorta how I feel about The Expanse series on TV, reading the books was amazing, and then seeing how they put it to TV made me want to cry even though people how never read the books were like "man this show is pretty cool" and I'm just like...No not really...;(

Out of curiosity, have you come across anything pretty epic in the game yet?

One planet I found Vortex cubes, the guards hate when you touch them though, and they sell for about 25k.

Another planet I came across some weird trading item that goes for about 35k with the guards getting pissy when you take it.

One planet was about 15C for the temp, then a storm came, and the temp went to 99c for a heat storm, that was pretty odd, and watching the flora react to it was pretty awesome!!

So by releasing a game at the standard price point for new games 59.99 USD here that constitutes a triple a game? Triple A games are games like GTA, CoD, Elder Scrolls and the like. They have huge teams of people working for years and spend millions promoting said games. Can the games be compared sure but a handful of developers creating something like NMS is a big difference from a company like Ubisoft who probably has triple that working on just 1 aspect of a game like assassins creed which will still ship full of game breaking bugs and glitches something which I haven't really heard about for NMS past the little issue some had with the pre order ship. Not sure why you have an issue with multi-player I can and have seen other players discoveries so it's there you want all the traders flying around to be real players then there would also need to be millions of people playing constantly which is unrealistic. As far as the game "working" I'm not having any issues but I'm playing it where it was intended not saying that's an excuse but it's become a seemingly more common theme that PC ports of console games are full of issues though.

As far as playing NMS I've had tons of fun exploring I was filthy rich for a time after finding a planet full of gold. I had about 2.5 million credits and blew most of it on an aliens ship with tons of cargo space and upgraded weapons. I also found a literal water world hardly any land and almost all the plants animals and landmarks were submerged.

D-Lyrium made his point clear when he said that a $60 game would be compared to other $60 games which are going to be mostly AAA games since that's the standard price for them.

If you're releasing a $60 game it has to provide as much content as other $60 games like the ones you mentioned. Otherwise they aren't worth the price and they should have dropped down the price. Even if they are a small studio they can't use that as an excuse when you consider the price.

Not to mention a lot of the hype comes from the director's Peter Molyneux style marketing and interviews.

I think you need to look at the big picture. A lot of work went into this game, they have a HUGE OPEN world of more than 1 QUINTILIAN planets to discover and explore, not to mention moons and space stations. The sheer size alone makes it worth a good portion more than a 15 dollar game.

Yes there are bugs, but tell me one game in the past five years that's released without bugs???

I've seen people call it repetitive, well yes in a way it is..It's a mining looting exploring game, Games like MineCraft are the same, they are all repetitive in their own way, as with games like Overwatch, Hell even my partner calls games like Diabo repetitive, button mashers...

When you break games down to their core they are pretty much the same button mashing, in one way or another...I think the game is worth 60 if you enjoy it..I'd have gladly paid 60 for it (Got it on prime for 20 percent off)

It's all down to perspective though I guess.

as for bugs.I'm on ps4. I've had the game freeze twice...and I had an interesting thing happen, I don't think it could be a bug??

I landed near a mining pillar, I guess I was too close because when I tried to take off, my ship got destroyed...Respawned at the pillar, I had to search the planet for a ship stone to call me ship away from that pillar! That was a pain in the butt.

In terms of content NMS easily is worth the 60$ but that's not the point. 60$ is the standard retail price for new games from triple A games like GTA to terrible crap games like Ride to Hell or Battleship released broken and with hardly any content. Saying a game is triple a just because of the price point is wrong on so many levels. Also comparing content to these other games NMS is definitely in the triple A relm I already know I'm going to be sinking the same sort of time I spend on an Elder Scrolls or or fallout game into this.

<p>Im going to preface this by saying (again) that I don't have the game. I don't have a PS4 and don't play these types of games on the PC</p><p> </p><p>

HOWEVER, I have watched a <span style="text-decoration:underline;">lot</span> of YouTube and Twitch streamers play the game (since the genre interested me)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Thoughts:</strong></p><p> </p><p>

</p><ul><li>Almost every space station is the same. 2 stairs that lead off either side that has one person living in it. Far too big for one person.<br /></li><li>Ships arrive and leave but you never see anyone else there<br /></li><li>Every planet I've seen is just a recoloured version of another. I've not seen a dead or barren planet yet.<br /></li><li> Oh my the grind.. I don't mind the grind for better loot, but constantly topping up your suit energy, launch thrusters, pulse engines and warp cores <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/mad.png.69834f23b9a8bf290d98375f56f1c794.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><br /></li><li>I've dipped in and out of streams so not sure if i've missed part of the story.. The galaxy is pretty much dead. There appears to be no cities or even an explanation on why you crashed in the first place. I know there is a string to pull at in regards to Atlas but you then have to grind to follow it.<br /></li><li>You get attacked in space.. Where do they come from and can you attack their base.... or in this vision, does everyone just live in their ships?<br /></li><li>Did they buy the UI off Bungie as it feels VERY much like Destiny<br /></li></ul><p></p><p>

I agree with D-Lyrium that a game is going to be evaluated by its price point, and with all the hype pieces that have been circulating this game, I can understand why people may think its a AAA game. It may be different where others come from, but if I see a game on the shelf for £14.99 having just come out, then I think its a smaller or indie game, but a £49.99 ($64.56) then I expect a AAA standard game and NMS is nowhere near that</p>

You can make it as big as possible but it's going to be meaningless if there's nothing to do. It's the same pitfall Pokemon Go and Minecraft suffer from. <p>I'm really enjoying No Man's Sky. </p><p> </p><p>

I've put about 10 hours into it so far and I'm not bored by it in the slightest. The story is nothing (almost literally, nothing) to write home about (at least not yet) but I've had a couple of pretty memorable experiences.</p><p> </p><p>

The first was not long after I'd repaired my ship. I took off and headed to a new planet. I landed on top of a big rock (not intentioanlly) on a toxic planet and when I got out of my ship, I had to jump and fire up my jetpack for a split second before hitting the ground so not to loose health. I quickly discovered the planet was toxic with not much in the way of life or resources so I decided to jetpack back upto my ship, When I tried to initialized by thrusters to take off, they didn't have enough energy so I was forced to go hunting for Plutonium (or some other energy source) on the seemingly resource-empty planet.</p><p> </p><p>

So I set off, my Exosuit taking damage from the toxic rain. Luckily, I found a cave to shield me and in the cave I stumbled across a huge mushroom like plant that had weird eyes all over its stalk. I examined it, looking at it in amazement, and then set off further into the cave. </p><p> </p><p>

There was no Plutonium, but up ahead, I saw something which, after a 2 minute walk in the toxic rain, turned out to a deserted space station. It was small but there was some cargo which hadn't been retrieved from a drop that was made, whenever it was made. And the cargo contained Plutonium. Rejoice. </p><p> </p><p>

Problem now was that I was quite far away from my ship and my Exosuit was in a bad way and I was too scared to charge it using Plutonium in case I didn't have enough left for my ship.</p><p> </p><p>

I managed to get back to the cave and slowly and waited until my Exosuit made itself a bit better. When I thought it was strong enough, I made a run for it back to my ship, charged my thrusters with the Plutonium I found and got the hell out of there.</p><p> </p><p>

I absolutely loved it. I felt so relieved when I finally got off of that awful, awful planet.</p><p> </p><p>

A few more hours into the game, I found the "wreckage" of a much better and much bigger space craft. It needed repairing, but the planet I was on wasn't too harsh which meant I could go off looking for stuff without too much worry. I was happily mining resources and crafting stuff next to my new ship when I heard some growls or snarls. I turned around there were 4 or 5 of these spikey goatdog things on a hill above me. They didn't seem to be coming towards me but the red claw above them signified they were hostile.</p><p> </p><p>

Suddenly, they decided to set upon me, and I panicked, firing my Mining Canon at them which didn't do a damn thing. I was close enough to my ship that I could get in it, so I did. They didn't move, and sort of circled the ship. I wasn't confident that I could take them on as I hadn't really had to engage in any combat with neither best nor sentinel. I checked my inventory and just so happened to have the stuff I needed to turn my Mining Canon into a Boltcaster. I did just that, got out, and did battle.</p><p> </p><p>

I felt pretty bad because I'd decided that I didn't want to kill anything that I came across, and would instead just scare them away by firing close to them (as I'd seen others do in various streams) but it wasn't working with these motherlickers, and I had no choice but to kill them.</p><p> </p><p>

So yeah, I've been loving it, and can't wait to fire it up tonight. The planets I've came across have been varied enough for me to not get annoyed with repetitiveness and such things. </p><p> </p><p>

It's not perfect, and there are little things that irk me, most notably, the space stations. They're just too samey and you only ever see one alien on them. You see crafts coming and going but nobody ever gets out of them. I'd like to see them get out of there ship and go into the station to do their trading. And just generally, it would be nice to see some actual alien races visiting planets, mining resources themselves, etc. Upon seeing them, you could either try and talk to them, or, just blast the holy hell out of them and take their stuff.</p><p> </p><p>

But I can see past this stuff. What we have is interpretation of something we know nothing about. Maybe this is what it's actually like? Maybe these alien lifeforms don't need to leave their ships at space stations because they're technology is more advanced. Maybe there is monopoly and there is a huge alien corporation building all of the stations for every star system? Maybe the stations are so well designed they just operate on their own and only require one alien to be there just in case they need to manually override the operation? </p><p> </p><p>

I don't know, and I don't care right now. I'm having a blast with the game and I think with every update they do, it will get better and better.</p>

<p>It's not procedurally-generated </p><p> </p><p>

There is a story line, if you choose to follow it, but the devs have come out and said that each planet is random. Yes they all "look" the same, because they are planets, but I've come across new plants, trees, animals, and buildings.</p><p> </p><p>

I get some things are going to look the same, it happens in EVER game, but I've put about 20ish hours in and have been finding new stuff left and right.</p><p> </p><p>

Space battles, I don't know where the bases would be, but it seems like everyone lives on their ships and just travels around, you CAN attack ships when they are flying around in space, or landing and leaving other planets. </p><p> </p><p>

I admit I'd love to see more from the NPCs in ships other than to just sell you better ships, but maybe that will come in the future. </p><p> </p><p>

I agree with you UK I'm loving this game so much and am quite happy playing it. </p><p> </p><p>

I sat down the other day (was still light out) to play this..Started hearing a storm, so I shut it off, and it was close to 10PM I had just spent about 4 hours and dind't even realize it. </p><p> </p><p>

I also would love to let this die, but Sean Murray won't let me. And watching Cohh really try not to hate the game is entertaining. All of the crashes and lack of content are finally breaking him, and it's glorious. Cohh's entire 'gimmick, if you want to call it that, is positivity and good vibes, but even he's struggling with NMS after a few days.

"Remember when we said all DLC would be free, yeeeeaaah, uhhh, turns out we're GREAT at this "promises we can't possibly keep" thing!".

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2016/08/16/paid-dlc-possible-for-no-mans-sky

"Possibly naive"... if only there was some high profile British game developer who'd made all these mistakes before you could've learned from...

The thing is, the Joe Danger series are great games. They clearly know what they're doing. They just bizarrely decided "you know what would make a great evolution from our light-hearted 2.5D side-scrolling stunt racing game? A massive open world space exploration epic! They're similar, right?! We're totally not going in over our heads here in any way".

Alright, stopping now. It's getting boring even for me (MORE BORING THAN NO MAN'S SKY AMIRITE... ok, ok).

In other news, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is out next Tuesday. That won't massively disappoint me, right?

...right?

<p>What was promised in No Man's Sky that didn't deliver? I'm not asking that like a smartass, I'm seriously asking. I don't pay attention to video games journalism at all anymore so I'm pretty far removed from the hype machine. </p><p> </p><p>

Although in this case not paying attention to hype seems to have paid off haha. I adore No Mans Sky I think it's great. I've already put an easy 40 hours into it and thats my gold standard for a great game: anything I can get a solid 40 hours from. I'm definitely going to put in more. I love it so far and I'm not even close to the "end". I wouldn't say it's game of the year or anything. Not even top 10 probably. But it's fun and I don't feel ripped off at all.</p>

I'm the same way.

Some of the things people say are like the planets and moons don't move and the planets are too much the same.

I love this game. And don't really care about what people say is missing. The only general complaint I have is the freaking flying creatures! They are the hardest to scan!

3 systems in with about 40 hours or so of play and I can see myself giving a TON more time to this so my 50 bucks well spent.

I'm really late to the party, but does anyone else play PlanetBase? Got through the tutorial and thought "well this is fun and challenging". Went to start my first colony and killed my seven colonists right away. :p

It's definitely fun though. I'm glad I got it.

<p>I know i've given No Mans Sky a bashing.. but I had a real hankering to play a space game..</p><p> </p><p>

So I caved... and played Elite Dangerous instead. I'd dabbled in it previously during its Game Preview period so deleted my save and started fresh</p><p> </p><p>

My intial ship (Sidewinder) looks like a reject from Robot Wars</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s825.photobucket.com/user/GDSRenders/media/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%205_zpsonga43hz.png.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz173/GDSRenders/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%205_zpsonga43hz.png</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

But I took it for a spin..</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s825.photobucket.com/user/GDSRenders/media/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%204_zpsixjg7nmx.png.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz173/GDSRenders/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%204_zpsixjg7nmx.png</span></a><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://s825.photobucket.com/user/GDSRenders/media/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%206_zpsgjjw7f7a.png.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz173/GDSRenders/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%206_zpsgjjw7f7a.png</span></a></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

I then picked up a mission to deliver some tea to a spacestation about 5 jumps away. About halfway through I got a mission update saying they would add an additional 15k credits if I could get it there within 15 minutes.. Guess they were dying for a brew.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s825.photobucket.com/user/GDSRenders/media/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%203_zps8daedbsh.png.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz173/GDSRenders/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%203_zps8daedbsh.png</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Having dropped off the tea, I found a grain transport mission and took it. Dropping into another system, I got caught up in a <a href="https://youtu.be/3zHjWA0Lh1w" rel="external nofollow">firefight</a>.</p><p> </p><p>

But with the bounty to claim and the money for the grain, I was able to buy a new ship</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s825.photobucket.com/user/GDSRenders/media/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%202_zpso13gfwhb.png.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz173/GDSRenders/Elite%20Dangerous/Elite%20Dangerous%20Core%202_zpso13gfwhb.png</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

That was just 2 hours of gameplay. The game is gorgeous and combat looks spectacular. Space Stations feel more alive, and the whole place feels dangerous.. Its something I've not seen from No Mans Sky, so im not gonna bash it anymore, I'm just gonna play more Elite</p>
