WCW: Heading straight into the Attitude era - the Sandler/Bischoff way!

Recommended Posts

Big news from WCW:

Today the Georgia based wrestling promotion World Championship Wrestling, more known as WCW released a press released where they announced that they have signed the famous Hollywood actor, and long time wrestling fan, Adam Sandler as co-Head booker together with Eric Bischoff. Only time will tell us how this will turn out, but initial reports states that the most hardcore WCW fans are very uncertain at this employment.

Introduction:

Hi everyone! First I want to tell you that this is my first ever dynasty, I hope it will turn out good. :)

The game, format and acknowledges:

For this dynasty I will use Genadi's Montreal Aftermath, so thanks for everyone involved in that project for the wrestler pics and logos. The game is sett to start in December 1997. For belt pics I will use the cuts that is included in the Real World updates for TEW05 created by cpt. charisma and TheWho87 over at ewbattleground's forums, so a big thank you to those guys as well.

The format I will use will be pretty similar to BigPapa42's World Championship Wrestling 2002: Rebuilding the Empire, but it will not be as detailed, at least not in the beginning. I will just report the results of my shows and might be a little more detailed on some angles and matches.

The one who inspired me to write this was Eisen-verse and his [- SWF -]: "The Incessant Need for Supremacy", you should read that one as well, it's a very good reading. :)

I will also report the results for WWF and ECW as well. If you want me to report any other promotion's results just tell me. :)

WCW Cruiserweight #1 Contender match: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera

With Eddy having the title right now, it'd only make sense for Rey to get the nod to face him at Starrcade.

Chris Benoit vs. Kidman

Benoit can be a major player if you give him the chance.

The Steiner Brothers vs. The Public Enemy

Scott Steiner is your future. There can be no other way, and there should be no other way.

WCW Television: Chris Jericho vs. Saturn

This is 1997 Jericho, when he was not our lord and savior yet. He's still too small time for this belt, so keeping it warm for Benoit on Saturn is my guess.

The Giant/Sting/Ric Flair vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan/Kevin Nash/Scott Hall

Hmm... I'll get more into this in a moment, but for now I'll just say that this is a tough one to pick for. Both sides really need to look strong in order for feuds to do well, and especially Sting, for reasons I'm getting into momentarily.

Just a few heads ups (since you say you didn't follow WCW much in the day). Unless you don't want them to be, a lot of your authorities and managers can be shuffled around. Gene Okerlund was never an authority figure, I always switch him to announcer or personality, since really all he ever was is an interviewer. Jim Neidhart and Booty Man to semi-active wrestler, because that's what they were. Kevin Sullivan and Harley Race would be road agents, as neither were really ever on screen at this point. And Larry Zbyszko could be under either authority or color. Like I said, this is just a point of reference if you want to take it - I do, because I'm a realism stickler like that. But it's your game, so play it however you want. I'll be reading either way, cause I loves me some old school WCW goodness.

Now, back to your Nitro main event. Like I said, I'm a realism stickler, and this was at a point when Sting had not wrestled in over a year. He did not wrestle until Starrcade 97. As I said, its your diary, but that was one of the main drawing points to the Sting/Hogan match, was that Sting hadn't wrestled or even spoken since Fall Brawl the year before. Sting was pushed as he was going to be the savior of WCW, always the one man wrecking crew when it came to the nWo. Anyone else, even The Giant, could get his ass handed to him by the nWo, but not Sting. Sting kicked nWo ass no matter who was in the ring, or how many. And here, we just have a completely random match to bring him back into action on. While I will admit it's a very WCW move to shoot itself in the foot like that, its also a move that would very much shoot itself in the foot. And yes, I realize that on TEW these sort of things don't particularly matter as much. And I'm still gonna read in on this, it's not a dealbreaker for me. But I'm just letting you know that it's a nitpick that really bothered me. Unless, of course, you had something planned and I'm pre-emptively talking here based solely on predictions and not knowing your storyline reason to do something like this.

All that said, however, I am looking forward to reading :)

Thanks for the advices Beejus. I will take it in consideration.

About Sting I didn't knew that, but I actually had some other plans for that match and it involves a certain debut (I might be telling too much here), even though in reality that particular person showed up some weeks later. ;)

Mike Tenay: Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to WCW Nitro here in Atlanta! Tonight we have full action packed show, don’t think Bobby?

Bobby Heenan: I certainly do so Mike. Tonight we will for example have a packed main event to which that man…*points up to the rafters where Sting is standing and watching down towards the ring*…will make his way down here and participate in a six-man tag team match.

Mike: Yeah, but even though the official announcement is that Sting will take part we also know another thing about Sting and that is that we can’t take him for certain. Now let’s leave this and talk about tonight’s title match between the World Television holder Saturn and the “Lionheart” Chris Jericho. What do you say about that match Dusty?

Dusty Rhodes: All I can say is wow, what a match. But you have to wonder if Raven and his Flock will stay away from ringside and I think that the outcome of the match will depend if they are at ringside or not.

Bobby: I can’t but agree with you on this matter, Mike. But whoever wins the match will have to bring all their best to the ring for that match.

Mike: As you can hear folks we’re in for a evening that Atlanta won’t forget for a LONG time.

Dusty: So enjoy your evening viewers all over America with us here at WCW!

Mike: But before we start the action let’s head down to the ring where Eric Bischoff together with the nWo has something very important to tell us.

Eric Bischoff: Thank you! As Mike just said I have something very important to tell you. We have been able to sign a person to WCW who we think will revolutionize our shows and we are proud of having him here with us at WCW. So with no further ado, ladies and gentlemen, here he is……ADAM SANDLER!

When Adam walks down to the ring half of the audience is cheering, the other half is booing.

Adam Sandler: Thank you people for your…ehm… warm welcome. As Eric said we have big plans for this company and I promise you people that you will see some changes here in WCW in the near future. For example I have a announcement for tonight. Sting, I know you can hear me and I will keep my part of our agreement, so you will not be wrestling tonight.

Entire nWo looks chocked at this and Hulk Hogan takes the microphone from Bischoff.

Hulk Hogan: Who do you think you are, brother? You don’t have the authority to make decisions like that, brother!

Sandler: You’re wrong at that point, that’s exactly what I can do. And what’s up with all this “brother” here and “brother” there? How many brothers do you have?

Hogan: Haha, very funny Adam. Why don’t you go back to your acting career and keep embarrass yourself, it is better doing that over in movies than doing it here in WCW!

At this point Sandler tries to attack Hogan with his mic, but Eric Bischoff is signaling to nWo to surround the ring, except Hogan, Nash, Hall and Bagwell who stays inside the ring.

Bischoff: Take him out!

Hogan, Nash, Hall and Bagwell attacks Sandler and beats him down on the mat. After this they stand above the floored Adam Sandler raising their arms in the sky while the audience boo them.

Bischoff order nWo to attack Sandler. Rating: C

Mike Tenay: Wow, what a disgusting attack on Adam Sandler!

Bobby Heenan: Yeah, but he had it coming..

Tenay: What are you saying?!

Heenan: Mike, you know that this use to happen when peoples stands up to nWo.

After the commercials we see a replay showing the actions of nWo on Adam Sandler.

Sandler is in his office watching the replay when there’s a quiet knock on the door, when Sandler comes to the door there’s no one there. Instead there’s a note on the door, Adam looks very please before going back inside his office and closing the door so the camera won’t be able to film inside anymore.

Adam Sandler finds mystery note. Rating: B

Tenay: Who do you think that note was from?

Heenan: I have no idea, it can be from anyone.

Rhodes: Yeah, it can be from his mother who tells him he’s a good boy standing up to the bad guys.

All three announcers laughs at this, to be honest, not so funny joke.

WCW Cruiserweight #1 Contender match: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l296/joehelmer/WCW%20dynasty/Wrestlers/EddieGuerrero3.jpg

Guest commentator: WCW Cruiserweight champion Eddy Guerrero

Both wrestlers got in some offense, but after a while the more athletic and faster Mysterio Jr. win by pinfall. After the match Rey celebrates in the ring.

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera. Rating: C

Tenay: Wow, what a match, all that speed and all those high flying moves. What do you think Eddy? *starts look around him* Eddy? *looks towards the ring* Eddy, don’t do it!

But it’s already too late, Eddy Guerrero has climbed one of the turnbuckles and when Rey turns around and sees him just as Eddy does a crossbody on Rey Mysterio Jr. Eddy starts punching down at the floored number one contender and then Guerrero places the title belt over Mysterio’s chest and performs a springboard moonsault landing on the title belt. After this the champion leaves accompanied by boos from the audience with a evil smile on his face. Rey still in the ring favoring his ribs.

Chris Benoit vs Kidman

A match which Benoit dominated from the bell rang until the match was over, but Kidman lasted surprisingly long to how Chris Benoit dominated it. Chris Benoit scores the pinfall.

Rating: C

When Benoit leaves the ring area to go back backstage he is interrupted by a video promo by Raven.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l296/joehelmer/WCW%20dynasty/Wrestlers/RavenWCW.jpg

Raven: Chris, once again you win just because of luck, but your luck will end next week when you will face Lodi here.

Lodi stares right into the camera with a evil grin on his face.Raven: You will wish that you just accepted my invitation to join the Flock. Now we will make you pay for your “heroic” action.

The camera once again shows Benoit on the walkway to the backstage area, he doesn’t look worried at all about the fact that he will face Lodi next week.

Rating: C-

Tenay: Wow, there’s really some heated tension between Raven and Benoit, I wonder where this will end.

Rhodes: I hope will see those two square of soon, I think it will be a magic moment. Maybe at Starrcade?

Tenay: Talking about Starrcade we know have two matches announced for the PPV. The first one is of course the World Heavyweight match between Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Sting, and the newest adding to the show: the match for WCW Cruiserweight title between the champion Eddy Guerrero and Rey Mysterio Jr.

Heenan: That will be two very good matches for sure.

Tenay: But now it’s time for a very good match here on Nitro, it is time for some tag team action!

Tag Team match: The Steiner Brothers vs. The Public Enemy

In a match that last much longer than people thought it would we saw Rick and Scott Steiner vs. The Public Enemy. Public Enemy started of good but after a while it was clear that the brothers had a little more experience of tag team matches and that was the deciding factor in this match. The Steiner Brothers won the match when Scott Steiner scored the pinfall with a Frankensteiner.

Immediately after the pinfall was a fact Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton runs in and attack The Steiner Brothers, but the attack soons turn out to be a failure when Scott Steiner almost single handedly gets the upper hand and soon Vicious & Delicious runs back backstage. The Steiner Brothers looks at eachother and you can really tell that Rick is grateful of what his brother did.

World Television title match: Saturn vs Chris Jericho

The match is very open with both wrestlers getting some good offence going, but the longer the match goes the more Chris Jericho is getting the upper hand. But around the nine minute line we see Raven climb up at the apron distracting the referee while Kidman, Hammer and Sick Boy attacks Jericho. When the referee turns around he sees Saturn pinning Jericho. Saturn wins by pinfall through interference.

Hollywood Hulk Hogan (together with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall) is in the ring cutting a promo about his match at Starrcade against Sting.

Hogan: Sting too bad that you are so scared of me that you don’t dare to face me tonight, but I will let you know something, brother. I’m not scared of you, no matter what you do you will scare me. Do you know why? Because I am the best in the world and you are nothing but a joke!

Six-man tag team match: The Giant/Ric Flair/??? vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan/Kevin Nash/Scott Hall

Tenay: Now when Sting is not going to compete as announced who is going to be The Giant’s and Ric Flair’s partner?

Rhodes: I have no idea Mike, it can be anyone on the roster. Maybe Roddy Piper? Lex Luger? Diamond Dallas Page? Or why not Adam Sandler?

Heenan: Really? Sandler? Do you really think so?

Rhodes: Why not Sandler?

Heenan: You are even more stupid than you look Rhodes.

Tenay: Guys, calm down. We have now idea who will be Sting’s replacement, but I have to agree with Bobby on this. I really don’t think it is Sandler.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7sdXfZB4jc

Suddenly a new entrance song is heard. Everyone looks like they are in shock and they look at eachother with confused faces, even The Giant and Ric Flair is confused. And suddenly the tension is broken by a huge pop from the audience. This is when a very famous face walks out towards the ring.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l296/joehelmer/WCW%20dynasty/Wrestlers/BretHart2.jpg

Tenay: Oh…my…god! It’s HIM it’s Bret “Hitman” Hart, he has finally appeared here on WCW, all I can say is…..just wow!

Rhodes: This is huge, we knew he was going to join WCW but we didn’t know when or where and now he is finally here!

Heenan: Isn’t this a little too much? He is making his debut, he isn’t a legend who returns after months of injury or something.

Tenay: But he is the Hitman!

Heenan: Whatever…I’m the Brain and I never get this reaction when I arrive somewhere.

Rhodes: You’re just jealous..

Heenan: No, I’m not. I just don’t understand the big deal about all this.

Tenay: Okay, that’s enough now let’s enjoy the action in the ring instead.

Heenan: Finally you say something smart…

The match itself starts of with a staredown between Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan before they start exchanging punches. The match is very open and no team seems to be able to get enough momentum going to be able to get the upper hand. The camera sometimes zooms up in the rafters where Sting is and watching the action in the ring. Suddenly the lights inside the arena wents out and it becomes completely black in the. No one can see what happens there, but you hear someone whine in pain.

Tenay: What’s going on?!

Rhodes: I have no idea..

Heenan: I think I know, this can’t be nothing else but the work Sting, he has been a thorn in the side of Hogan for over a year now.

Rhodes: For once you say something that makes sense…

Once the light comes back Bret Hart has Hulk Hogan locked in the Sharpshooter.

Tenay: I think you’re right Bobby.

Hogan quickly submits to the Hitman’s Sharpshooter.

Rating: B

But Eric Bischoff quickly comes out from the backstage area.

Bischoff: Hey ref! Reverse the decision, you know you can’t do like this…

Adam Sandler also comes out from backstage.

Sandler: Eric stop! Actually the match CAN end like this, the result of the match remains.

The two authorities starts to argue.

Rating: B+

Meanwhile a brawl breaks out between the two teams, the brawl continues all the way to the backstage area, and with this the show ends.

Very nice Nitro ending, I'm quite pleased with how you brought in Bret Hart for that main event. Much better than the real life way he was debuted, which was his first match beng like two months after he debuted. Also, screw your owner, sign Finlay!!

La Parka and Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Eddy Guerrero

CHEAT 2 WIN ESSE'S~!!

Chris Jericho vs Alex Wright

A nice win to build Jericho up.

WCW United States Champion Curt Hennig vs. Rick Martel

Should be a very solid match, with a very solid win for Hennig.

Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton vs. Benoit and Malenko

A quick little match like this almost deserves to go to the nWo. Technically Benoit and Malenko weren't teaming in WCW much at all at this point, whereas Vicious & Delicious were fairly established. And plus, I smell Flock interference. Or maybe that's just whatever Kidman is scratching at.

Bret Hart vs. Scott Hall

As much as I like Hall, Bret needs to keep up his momentum. I don't know quite where he goes from here, but it can only be upwards.

Good show, Hart debut was great ending! I like the fact that you moved Sting out of the main event also, holding him off for Starrcade is definitely the way to go and WCW fans from that time were very used to the bait and switch so not many would've been too upset he didn't wrestle :p Not sure if Bret's debut match should be on Sat Night (a "B" Show) but I know the main event is lacking top in ring performers so don't blame you.

If I could give any advice it would be to change your main event asap, guys like Savage, Piper etc. were all getting on and their talents diminishing fast in the ring. With an undercard of guys like Benoit, Jericho and Mysterio a lack of potential shouldn't be a problem.

Also, one thing WCW dropped the ball big time on (imo) was the nWo storyline. At this time it was at it's height but not long after was all downhill. Would be great if you could resolve it all somehow.

Pick guide for WCW Saturday Night:

La Parka and Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Eddy Guerrero

Chris Jericho vs Alex Wright

WCW United States Champion Curt Hennig vs. Rick Martel
