If you were watching wrestling in 1987... I want you!

Recommended Posts

Okay so every year around this time I consult a bunch of you for my annual TEW modfest. Due to time restraints mostly to do with work I hardly ever get a chance to be on msn or talk to most of you anymore :( While usually I'd grill all of this info out of you over chat I thought I'd ask everyone's opinions if they have time to give them. :p

My latest project is by far the biggest, it's set to start in March, 1987, one month out from WM3. I usually just ask people to list who they believed were the best in the given category but in recent years I get loads of different and extra feedback which I appreciate. You can either just list one person for each stat who you think was the best at the time or list as many as you like in order or with a stat next to it if you know the stat system in TEW (it's simply 1-100% but is alot more involved once broken down). Below I've listed every stat so please if you have the time let me know your opinions.....

Remember this is for March, 1987. I'll post an example below of what I think and am working with at the moment, though it will very likely change. Just use my example as a template.

Skill Meanings....

Brawling His ability in brawl-based matches.

Puroresu His ability in hard-hitting, slowly-built “Japanese style” matches.

Hardcore His ability in weapons-based matches.

Aerial His ability in high-flying fast-paced matches.

Flashiness His skill at adding extra flash to matches.

Mat Work His ability to work a mat wrestling style.

Chain Wrestling His chain wrestling ability.

Submissions His ability at submission based work.

Microphone His skills on the microphone when giving interviews.

Charisma His natural charisma.

Acting His acting ability.

Announcing His ability to do play-by-play.

Athleticism His natural athletic ability.

Toughness His natural physical toughness.

Stamina His stamina levels.

Power His physical strength.

Basics His ability and training level at the basics of wrestling like footwork.

Psychology His ability to incorporate psychology into his matches.

Safety The higher the value, the less likely he is to hurt his opponents or himself.

Consistency The higher the value, the less likely he is to have an “off day.” Most people would have a rating above 85%. A rating of 100% would guarantee that off days were almost unheard of.

Selling His ability to “sell” moves and matches.

Sex Appeal The worker’s physical attractiveness.

Star Quality His “X factor” in terms of whether he can be taken seriously as a major star.

Menace His natural menace.

Intensity The higher the value, the more intense he is in the ring.

Stiffness The higher the value, the stiffer (more realistically hard) he works.

Resilience The higher the value, the less the worker will get injured. Most workers would have about 80% in this category unless they had a track record for getting injured.

Refereeing His ability to referee matches. The rating would need to be around the same as the matches he would be working; for example, if the referee is regularly involved with matches that get 80% ratings, he would need to have a score of around that in order not to cause a penalty.

MMA Style His ability to incorporate an MMA style into a wrestling match. Please note that it has nothing to do with his actual skill or ability in terms of genuinely competing in MMA. It is highly recommended that workers receive a zero in this category unless they have a specific background in MMA and if a hybrid promotion was created they’d be a comfortable fit on the roster.

I know in the PM I sent you I said I could not think of anything but I guess I could have a go at some of it:

Hardcore

Terry Funk

Abdullah the Butcher

Flying Skills

Aerial

Dynamite Kid- I would rank him high not exactly sure where.

Randy Savage- I seem to remember him being pretty good back then.

Thanks guys.

Flying skills is a hard one, guys like Owen Hart deserve a mention too. Savage was good in the air from what I remember but he was more a flashy worker then aerial. I have him at....

Aerial: 50

Flashiness: 75

Maybe he needs a bump in aerial, he did get some air up there but he didn't do much apart from the elow drop?

I am not really good at stats, that is why I did not leave any behind after I just did the list. So I would be the wrong person to ask that question.:o

Heck if it was up to me George The Animal Steele would have A* in every section.:D

Not sure about Miss Elizabeth for defining attractiveness - She was in a field of one in WWF back then, I believe, so it's a limited reference pool :p. Even NWA back then didn't use many female valets/managers (think Flair and Rhodes had them briefly?)

It'd probably be one of the women's wrestlers - Misty Blue Simms is a name that might be worth looking at (remembering more than twenty years ago is hard!). I believe Ivory was around back then, and I think Tori (Terri Poch/Power) was wrestling around that time. Women's wrestling in America at that time was even worse off than in the 2005 CVerse :D

Madusa Micelli might be a better reference. I think she was active in Japan at that time, and I would say she was a lot more attractive than Elizabeth. Everyone's different, of course, and WWF didn't overly emphasise Elizabeth's appeal (likely due to Savage or her saying no, and also wanting to remain kid-friendly) by putting her in revealing outfits. Even her famous moment at Summerslam 88 wasn't very revealing.

A few ideas for Toughness: Meng/Haku, Vader and Rick Rude were all renowned for being tough-nuts. I believe back in the mid-90s UFC contacted WCW about using Vader in one of their events. WCW didn't want to risk Vader, but considered Haku to have a decent chance of success.

Rude, meanwhile, is noted for winning a fight against a guy while he, Rude, had one arm in a sling.

I'd also suggest that Arn Anderson be considered one of the top American guys for chain and mat wrestling, as well as psychology and consistency.

Tony Atlas would be a decent Power candidate - I believe it was a pretty big part of his gimmick.

In terms of superstar look, you may want to consider Jeff Gaylord, who was essentially Ultimate Warrior without the face paint. I recally him placing high on a list of strongest (read: best muscles) wrestlers in an Apter mag. On the same list Steve Williams placed pretty highly, and that was reflected in his ring style.

And speaking of Steve Williams, if Bart Gunn makes it in then you may want to consider making him a pretty tough guy - Brawl For All may be ten years later than this, but Gunn competed in several Iron Man/strongman competitions before getting into wrestling, I believe.

Getting back to Warrior, power, SQ, charisma (not microphone) and of course steroids can all be marked highly for him. It may have been shortly before he hit his peak years in WWF, but I believe 1987 was the year he jumped from WCCW to WWF.

In fact, the McMahon trial gives a pretty good idea of who used steroids in America around this time :p

I can unfortunately not contribute here because I started watching around WM6 (Germany didn't have wrestling on TV before that, and then it was only WWF ... and some NWA so late at night I couldn't watch >_<), but ... if this means a 1987 rw mod is coming then ... OMG! Ok, I'll leave you guys at it now, just had to drool a little over the prospect ^^

Wasn't Baby Doll around back then? How about Woman as Kevin Sullivan's manager? I did not get into the NWA until 1989, so I really don't know if they were around at this time (I think Woman was in Florida) but I think they would both rank pretty high on the list.

He had a double ax handle that he hit as one of his big moves. in and outside the ring

But he also had this move where he'd grab a guy's head, run across the ring, jump over the top rope, and slingshot the guy's neck on the rope a he's landing outside the ring. That's realistically more 'athleticism' but he should be high in that category as well.

I'll be interested to see how you deal with (what we now know as) the rampant use of pain killers and steroids. If only because the 80s CV mods will have the same issues.

For Sex Appeal, gotta remember that the 80s were a different time. I could definitely say that Elizabeth back in the day would have been the hottest of the hot. She was still pretty amazingly hot come 2000, and that's when the definition was changing to be women like Sable as the most incredible hottest. So I think she would definitely deserve a solid A-A* on sex appeal, because it kinda was utilized anyways... in the even moreso than they are now PG time of the 80s, her standing behind Macho and smiling was the same as what the Bellas hanging around in revealing outfits are now.

I always consider it as just "Remember, this was back when Ric Flair could only tell guys he was gonna kick their butt."
