Custom Universe Mod

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking to start my own personal mod, it most certainly won't be ready for a while and I've put a lot of effort into creating my world and characters so I'm going to not always be using my "final" names and such right now, but I was wondering if anyone here wouldn't mind answering questions and bouncing some ideas back to me. This will be the first time I have ever made a full mod and I was hoping to glean some knowledge from those more experienced to build the best and most balanced world that I can.

I know exactly where I am starting, I want to start and finish this fed before I move on to the next (that means the promotion, the roster et al.).

The fed's initials are VWF. The idea behind it is that two guys who absolutely love wresting and want to help keep the industry alive save up almost all their money from their last 5 or so years working in Japan/around in general and found a school and promotion in British Colombia to train and build good young workers up.

I see the promotion as kind of an RoH type feel, where things are much more based on their in-ring performance than their ability as entertainers and such, but there is a certain level of angles that get involved because these guys know that sometimes solid pay requires you to be better than just physically good (though that certainly isn't there focus, they could always use their various connections in the appropriate industries to get their graduates work suited to them etc.).

The first thing I need to work out is the starting size for the fed, how to balance out the "types" of content (like mainstream etc.) cuz this is pretty new to me, decide if it should be a touring or not a touring fed, hiring policies etc.

The roster so far has 26 people on it, 1 of them is a fulltime ref, 2 of them are the founders (who wrestle as a tag team in the mid-card-ish range to help train their students in-ring) and the other 23 are wrestlers who I have tried to divide evenly and appropriately amongst the various "positions" on the roster.

I only have two title belts in mind so far, one for their Main Event level champions and one for Tag-Teams which are like the whole mid-card range (lower to upper midcard).

With that so far in mind, do y'all have any thoughts for me? Suggestions? Questions?

<p>Some friendly advice as a guy that has/is involved with a few different mods. </p><p> </p><p>

You need to know for sure how these things work in the game before you start building a mod. This is no longer the EWR days or even the TEW 05 days. There are SO many features and if you don't have experience in knowing how nearly all of them work I don't think you can begin to have an enjoyable mod. </p><p> </p><p>

My suggestion is do your homework. Its not fun per say but play around with the default data, play as big promotions, small promotions, mexico, japan. Do your homework figure out how each region, how each feature works.</p><p> </p><p>

After that move onto some of the more talked about mods. Tommy Tomlins War of the Immortals II is a fantastic mod and Tommy is someone that has been around forever and has always made top quality mods. </p><p> </p><p>

Move over to the C Verse 97 mod, its ran by Derek B and since he's close to the TEW projects working on the testing team you can see how his mod is balanced. Hop over and play Remi's all women's mod, another guy that is not only on the testing team but he's down right obsessive when it comes to his game play so you know his mod is going to be balanced. </p><p> </p><p>

Check out some of Genadi's mods etc. </p><p> </p><p>

This game is far beyond the point where you can pop in and just say "I need to know how the different promotion features work and I'm good" that is such a HUGE part of the game that you really need to see that and other features from several different angles through several different sets of eyes. </p><p> </p><p>

If you're serious about putting out a quality mod and its not a "hey I want to throw my backyard or e fed or neighborhood friends in a mod and put it out to the public just so I can main event in my own world"". If you're serious about it take your time, learn these mods, learn these promotions inside and out and THEN ask your questions.</p><p> </p><p>

When you can say "hey when normally when I do this with mainstream and traditional I get this result but recently when I tweak this I'm getting this result" thats a lot more specific of a problem for people to fix than essentially helping you learn the features of the game. </p><p> </p><p>

A final piece of adivce check out the small questions that don't deserve answers thread its chalked full of TEW knowledge that anybody from beginner to vet can use. </p><p> </p><p>

I wish you luck in your mod and I don't know how much experience you have with this or any TEW but just know this is not a EWR sized project and making a quality mod has scared off many of the once grade mod makers due to the sheer size of the game these days. </p><p> </p><p>

If you're interested in playing through the different promotions and different mods and you have questions on that I'm sure those mod makers would more than happily lend you an ear.</p>

<p>All of what Stennick says is spot on.</p><p> </p><p>

Where you are at is seriously the first step of many hundreds of steps so good luck with it <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Honestly, I usually get really bored with the CornellVerse REALLY fast. I just can't find any characters or promotions to latch onto, it all kind of winds up boring me a bit as far as the ideas behind it and the visuals go. Not bashing the effort put in, I damned well respect that, I just sort of dislike the overall aesthetic and sensibilities. Interesting to know that there have been so many additions and changes from o5 that have made it no longer user friendly to Mod though...

Playing 05 and 10 is like playing two entirely different games.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> The changes to gameplay are one thing, I'm just saying that as far as the pre-packaged ingame CornellVerse is concerned I am not interested in any of the characters etc., I don't get into the world because I don't jive with the aesthetics and sensibilities used to construct it. It's purely an issue of not really liking the characters, the name puns chosen, a bunch of the visuals etc. It's just not to my tastes, not that it isn't any good. Though the 2010 Cornell Verse does seem much better than the 2005 version.</p>

<p>Agree to disagree.</p><p> </p><p>

The initial db was created as almost a knock off of the existing gameworld with lots of visual puns and silly names. But for the people who have followed along, the world has developed, characters have grown and matured and its hard to imagine that in a entire world of characters someone didn't connect with a single promotion. Not a criticism...just hard to imagine. </p><p> </p><p>

as for the visual..again..agree to disagree. they're really well done 3-D renders. Adam can't use real pictures, so unless he uses drawings I don't know what his other option would be.</p><p> </p><p>

But if you're having problems connecting, then yeah I can why it'd be hard to sustain a game. I'd try a real world mod until you get the hang of doing your own. I'd be interested in seeing what your created just to see why you didn't find the CVerse to your taste.</p>

<p>Looking through the feds again I think I might give GCG a try in 2010, but I tried to get interested in Adam's Mexican scene and I just feel that it is very much off feeling (I guess a big part of that are the visuals, I find a lot of the mask renders and esigns look lazy and/or sloppy, some of them even appear to suffer from mild forms of clipping). </p><p> </p><p>

One of the things I actually actively dislike about the CornellVerse, instead of just not connecting with, are the two "Border" Feds. NOTBPW and SOTBPW both just feel far too "we exist in relation to America" for me. Like, I can't think of any Canadians I know who would name a group they founded as "North of the Border".</p>

Not all of the graphics are perfect... but if that's a major motivator for creating your own custom mod, I'm curious what the intent is for graphics for the mod? Are you capable of doing all the worker images, logos, belts, etc, yourself?

As for the names, its all a matter of taste. There are always options like renaming. Make NOTBPW into Eastern Canadian or something similar. But I have seen "North of the Border" used for a few different bussinesses, at least further out west here.

I've never been too big on some of the names either but at the same time you'll find a few "South of the Border" businesses named as such just across the Rio Grande.

Now mind you that you won't find many further south like Cancun or near Mexico's southern border but they are there somewhere scattered throughout the country.

And as was mentioned in the previous post you can always change the names. It wouldn't be too hard to find someone to make the logos for renamed feds but belts is another story as only a handful have took to creating those.

But I'm actually happy with the way Mexico is presented now. </p><p> </p><p> As for visuals...there was just a wave of re-renders done of some of the characters with really bad or sloppy masks. I think that will continue. If you see any choppy masks, they are probably being worked on. </p><p> </p><p> I'd be curious to see what you consider bad though to know just to see what your taste is in what needs to be re-rendered.</p><p> </p><p> EDIT: And yes, as BigPapa said, if the visuals are so important, what are you going to be doing for the graphics in your mod?</p>

<p>For mine I plan on having 2d art. I have a lot of friends who are artists and can take my designs and improve upon them. A comic book type feel, if you would. I know that isn't what some people like, but it is what I like. Wrestling was pretty much made for comics, not that the WWE would know that they way they go about liscencing their rights for comics (I mean, I have some absurd storyline ideas myself, but man, the latest WWE comic attempt was just sad overall)</p><p> </p><p>

It's nice to know that masks are being re-rendered. If I have the energy at some point I'll actually dig through them all and critique stuff, but that's a bit too anal for me at the moment.</p>

Being able t put together an area of the game and flesh it out gives you a better understanding of how an entire mod works in microcosm. Doing Mexico for the 77 CV mod is how I got introduced to modding in TEW terms and it helped me immensely.</p>

I'd be tempted to if I wasn't already playing one game in the 77 mod with a moblike criminal of an owner (ruling out OLLIE), and I have an MPWF game going in modern times that I have recently become quite fond of.</p>

The feds that are still around will have to be adjusted to reflect growth or loss of influence. 15 years worth of title histories updated, which wrestler went to which fed over the years, retirements, deaths, etc. I think the discussion on which feds remain active will be the most heated</p><p> </p><p> While in the prequel (25 years), it's almost a clean slate as most of the active wrestlers will have retired, passed away, etc. by 2010. There will be a handful wrestlers just beginning their careers that are pushing retirement age in the current mod so their skills will be rolled back. Some of the retired guys in their 50's and 60's will be active competitors instead of Road Agents and the like. Feds that will go out of business before 2010 will be created.</p><p> </p><p> At one time I was considering a 60's era prequel mod but not even a good dozen workers would be around and only a couple of feds.</p>

Hey, my love of 77 should be no secret. APWF is more likely than not going to be my longest running game of all time (got a year left to catch up to EWA 2008, and it'll get there in all likelihood), and <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=198672" rel="external nofollow">I've got a delightful diary going with West Berlin Wrestling</a>.
