31-March-1983

Holiday Inn just outside of Houston, TX

It's finally done. Paul Boesch finally agreed to terms and handed over the keys, if you will, to Houston Championship Wrestling. He's a tough negotiator but everyone has a price and while it took a while to find his, eventually I did.

Now comes the fun part, at least for me, booking this company and turning this not quite regional promotion into one of the top territories in the United States!

Looking at the pile of manilla folders beside me, I shake my head at how meticulously detailed Paul Boesch's records are. Personal details, financials, relationships in the business for each and every one of his, well mine now, employees. Copies of working agreements with every company they've dealt with. It's going to make my work that much easier.

Continuing to peruse the info at my fingertips, I blindly reach for the rotary phone beside me and dial a number that's been ingrained to my memory during these many months of negotiations.

"Paul? It's Jake Shelton. I know it's a little late, but I was wondering if you'd told the boys about the buyout yet? If not, could you get them all together in the morning and I'll be there to help you break the news."

I nod slowly as I listen to his response before answering.

"No, thank you Paul. This is a great opportunity for me and a great financial boon for you. It's a win-win situation. In fact, I'd like you to stay involved with the company in a couple of capacities, actually. First, I really want your expertise in the booking arena. You've got a great mind for the business."

I chuckle as he dismisses my compliments, but I won't be dissuaded and he reluctantly agrees.

"Great, that's a load off my mind. Also, I would love if you'd continue on as the color commentator, at least temporarily. I'm working on bringing in some new announcers, but haven't gotten the signed contracts back yet."

I pause as Paul again responds, smiling as I set Gino Hernandez's file aside.

"Great, Paul. I'll see you at the studio tomorrow morning. Have a good night."

Well, that went about as well as I could have expected. Nobody just up and walked out, although I think more than a couple of the boys are taking a wait and see approach to how things go.

I think they probably would have if Paul hadn't been there. He's well respected in the business and from all the dealings I've had with him in our negotiations, I'd have to be a fool to not understand why he's so liked. So getting a good word from him has given me a chance to show these guys what I'm all about.

And what I'm all about is good traditional wrestling and making money, but not necessarily in that order.

Sighing, I sit back down in a minimally padded office chair and begin picking through the various folders, with clipped 8x10 glossy's attached to the outside and begin arranging them according to my expectations.

A sharp rap on the door hardly dents my awareness, but when the door opens to reveal a young man that looks barely able to shave I can't help but smile.

"You wanted to see me, Mister Shelton?"

"I sure did, Gino, and you can call me Jake, alright? Now, what I wanted to talk about was this..."

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/PeterB.jpg

Peter Birkholz: Hello wrestling fans, I’m Peter Birkholz, and welcome to the latest installment of Houston Championship Wrestling coming to you from the Sam Houston Coliseum in downtown Houston, Texas. At this time, my partner Paul Boesch is in the ring with a special guest. Paul, take it away!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/PaulBoesch.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/TJHooker.jpg

Paul Boesch: Thanks, Peter. Alongside me is Jake Shelton and tonight ladies and gentlemen, a new era is beginning in Houston Championship Wrestling, a new way of doing things…

Jake Shelton: And that’s where I come in, Paul. You can go back to the announce table where you belong old man. This is my announcement and your services in this ring are no longer needed.

Boesch looks at Shelton with a look infused with parts anger, puzzlement and sorrow but he merely shakes his head and makes his way out of the ring that he helped bring to Houston as the crowd shows its displeasure with a showering of boos at the blatant disrespect.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/TJHooker.jpg

Jake Shelton: You won’t be booing quite so loud once you hear my announcement, but go ahead and get it out of your systems. Make sure you get it all out right now.

The volume increases and Shelton merely laughs it off before continuing once the crowd noise decreases.

Jake Shelton: As I was saying, before being so rudely interrupted, under previous management, Houston Championship Wrestling was missing something, just under the surface that kept niggling at my brain as I watched from home, just like most of you except in a much better class of neighborhood, I’m sure. As I was watching men like Jim Duggan, Matt Borne, Kamala and Gino Hernandez, just to name a few, it hit me. It became so obvious that I couldn’t believe how simple it was. This company needed someone to carry its banner forward, to represent the HCW and its ownership with the class and prestige that it deserves. In short, Houston Championship Wrestling needed an advocate…it needed a warrior…it needed a CHAMPION. And starting tonight, the HCW will begin its search with an 8 man tournament that will both name the first ever HCW North American Champion and provide the impetus for this company to move upward and onward as the top wrestling organization in the United States.

Shelton leaves to a crowd that is still buzzing, both about his treatment of a man like Paul Boesch and his announcement that a new HCW North American champion will be crowned.

Peter Birkholz: Paul, that was a horrendous show of disrespect to you..

Paul Boesch: But we’ve always known that HCW isn’t about one man, Peter. It’s about what’s best for the fans and the wrestlers alike. So while I can’t stomach his attitude towards me, I can certainly embrace the 8 man tournament that he’s putting into place. Let’s just concentrate on that and the rest just isn’t all that important right now.

Reading the Dirt Sheets

3-April-1983 : Midday

Jake Shelton's home office in Kansas City

Well, the first show went off pretty well and I think the crowd liked the idea of the tournament to crown a new champion. Every territory needs at least one champ to make things interesting and the way I've got things in mind, I hope the fans and the wrestlers themselves will agree with me. Now let's check out the dirt sheets for today.

Hmmm, looks like Harley Race took the loss in Jumbo Tsuruta's home turf. Not a surprise there. I'm sure Harley was made to look good in the loss though. He's hot as a firecracker right now here in the US and I'm sure he wouldn't want to lose that momentum for a one time in Japan.

Looks like Stu's going to be keeping Calgary's North American Heavyweight title on his kid Bret for awhile. Hope he knows what he's doing. Sometimes your kids aren't as good as you think they are. Guess we'll see.

Joint Promotions? Tally Ho? Bearcat? Wow, what a waste of time to include here. Nobody over here's ever heard of these jokers.

Ah here's a match I'd pay money to see..Bruiser Brody against Dory Funk, Jr. Frank was always good at playing the psycho, but I bet he was the babyface against Dory in All Japan. And Bruiser won the Carnival Championship too. Nice work, Frank, well deserved.

Rufus R. Jones...never could quite see what the fans like in him, but apparently the fans still do since he kept the Florida Bahamas title in a tussle with Jake the Snake. Never underestimate the bad taste of fans, I guess.

CWA, not much going on except for Lawler's AWA International title retention against...oh please, Moondog Rex? What, Randy Mulkey wasn't available? I would hope he'd retain or damn..I forgot, Jerry handles the books up there. Enough said.

Well, enough about that. I need to get my own booking committee together to discuss our next show.

This way, people like Junkyard Dog and Chavo Guerrero could think that they have a chance of being champion, if only for a day. Sadly, for Chavo, he couldn’t manage to get past Matt Borne. Rick Rude and Shane Douglas emerge victorious against Art Crews and George Weingeroff by pinfall after Rude takes out Weingeroff with a brutal Rude Awakening.

Time of Match: 5:55

The unorthodox team of Kamala and Matt Borne take a little time to gel early on against Chavo Guerrero and El Sicodelico, but eventually they get the upper hand and the pinfall victory after Borne hits Guerrero with a deadly piledriver.

Match Rating: D+

Time of Match: 7:34

Notes: Color commentary gave the match a boost.

Kamala came out of this match looking good.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/JimDuggan.jpg

Jim Duggan: I would say it’s a pleasure to be here at the Sam Houston Coliseum here in Houston, but my mama raised me not to be a liar. I’m disgusted that I have to begin my search for the HCW North American title by wrestling here, but sometimes you have to do things that you don’t really like to do, like having to completely destroy someone like Junkyard Dog. I mean, it’s going to take at least five washings to get the Dog’s stink off of me after I whip him from pillar to post in our Quarterfinal matchup tonight. JYD, it’s curious that you haven’t been seen or heard from since our match was announced a couple of weeks ago. Maybe there actually is a little bit of a pea-brain inside that oversized melon of yours. Do yourself a favor and just forfeit our match. We both know that there’s no way you can beat me anyway.

The crowd boos lustily as Duggan makes a few gestures to the crowd, egging their negative responses on even further as he confidently walks away from the announce location.

Segment Rating: C

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/PeterB.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/PaulBoesch.jpg

Peter Birkholz: What a despicable way to start the show, Paul.

Paul Boesch: It certainly is and what must the Junkyard Dog think about these incredibly infuriating remarks?

Peter Birkholz: I’m sure the Junkyard Dog will answer with his actions inside the ring, Paul, and speaking of the ring, our first match is set to begin. Let’s get to ringside!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/ArnAnderson.jpg VS http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/wrestlertemplate.jpg

Marty Lunde showed that it’s not braggin’ if you can do it and Mike Bond was the most recent victim of his heart-rattling Spinebuster.

Winner via pinfall: Marty Lunde

Match Rating: E-

Time of Match: 7:26

Peter Birkholz: A decisive victory by the no-nonsense Marty Lunde over Mike Bond, Paul.

Paul Boesch: He just keeps looking better each and every week, Peter, and believe me when I say that his Spinebuster looks more and more devastating also. I definitely don’t think I’d want to be on the receiving end of it.

Peter Birkholz: I think most people with any sense at all would agree with your sentiments on that. Let’s head to the ring for a tag team matchup involving the Handsome Half-breed, Gino Hernandez and his partner Iron Mike Sharpe.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/GinoHernandez2.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/MikeSharpe.jpg VS http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/PerryJackson.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/TigerConwayJr.jpg

Gino Hernandez and Mike Sharpe were in control of this matchup with Perry Jackson and Tiger Conway Jr, from start to finish. The Handsome Half-breed got the pin on Conway after hitting his signature Reverse Flying Elbow Drop.

Winner via pinfall: Gino Hernandez & Iron Mike Sharpe

Match Rating: D+

Time of Match: 7:12

Paul Boesch: What an excellent showing for Gino Hernandez. He really looked outstanding in the match against..wait a minute, Hernandez and Sharpe haven’t left the ring..

Peter Birkholz: This is completely uncalled for. You got the win, there’s no need to add insult to the loss for Jackson and Conway. Oh my..a spike piledriver on Jackson and they’re circling a still groggy Conway.

Paul Boesch:Circling is right, Peter. They’re like a pair of sharks in the water and they smell blood. They’re lifting Conway up and another spike piledriver. The official, Nick Patrick, is finally able to convince the two to leave the ring, but they’ve left Perry Jackson and Tiger Conway Jr in a heap in the middle of the ring.

Segment Rating: D

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/TJHooker.jpg

Jake Shelton: Mil Mascaras, I told you last week that you’d have a Texas sized problem this week in your match. Everyone knows that when people talk about Texas, they understand that everything’s bigger in Texas and tonight, that’s going to be your problem. Tonight, Mil Mascaras, you won’t be taking on just one man, you’re going to be taking on two men in a two on one handicap match. You want to show up uninvited to Houston Championship Wrestling without checking with the new management? Well, you’re going to regret not showing the proper respect and I promise you’ll come to regret it by the end of your match. And it’s right now!

Segment Rating: E-

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/MilMascaras.jpg VS http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/SuperDestroyer1.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/Houston%20Championship/MaskedSuperstar.jpg

Mil Mascaras was outnumbered in his matchup, but somehow managed to last over ten minutes by shrewd maneuvering and hit and run tactics against Super Destroyer and Masked Superstar. When Jake Shelton motions to the backstage area, another masked man comes running to the ring and interferes by slamming Mascaras to the mat with a brutal blindside Lariat clothesline, causing the official to call for an immediate disqualification.

Winner via disqualification: Mil Mascaras

Match Rating: C

Time of Match: 10:32

Peter Birkholz: What a horrible display by the managing partner of HCW. It wasn’t bad enough to have Mil Mascaras take on both the Masked Superstar and Super Destroyer, but to have Mr. Olympia interfere and they’re still putting the boots to the Mexican icon.

Paul Boesch: Finally, they’ve stopped beating on Mil and it appears Nick Patrick can finally get in to check on him, but it looks like Jake Shelton is leading the trio over to our announce position.

Jake Shelton: Take a real long look at what happens with you mess with authority, people. Mil Mascaras just learned the hard way that Jake Shelton and these three men, the Masked Desperadoes, are not playing around. You want to disrespect me? These men are more than happy to show you or anyone else the error of your ways.

Now, before I take my leave of this sub species of the human race, I’d like to announce that the Junkyard Dog has been seriously injured in an outside incident. Not to worry, however, as the Quarterfinal match-up will take place tonight and Jim Duggan’s new opponent will be Butch Reed.

Segment Rating: E-

HCW NORTH AMERICAN TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINAL MATCH #4

Jim Duggan was incensed to still be fighting after the announcement that JYD was injured and made the point quite vociferously to the referee, to no avail. Once Butch Reed entered the ring, it became a serious brawl between two rough, tough individuals and after several minutes of in-ring action, they began brawling along the ringside area causing both men to be counted out as their punches and kicks never abated.

Double Countout: No winner

Match Rating: D+

Time of Match: 13:17

Paul Boesch: These two men are turning the Sam Houston Coliseum into a pier six brawl. It’s easily apparent that Butch Reed and Jim Duggan have no love lost for each other.

Peter Birkholz: They’re all over the arena, Paul. I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever seen such intensity and hatred in a main event. They don’t look like they’re ever going to stop. I’m sorry folks, we’re out of time. See you next week on Houston Championship Wrestling!

Totals:

Mistaken: 8/17

FYI, If JYD hadn't been injured in another federation match, he was slated to get the win in the originally scheduled match...but, now he's out for awhile, so plans get to be shuffled around! It'd be so much easier if I just went in and edited the database as necessary! lol

I have to say that it is a little weird to see Jim Duggan as a heel. I mean I know he was one when he was apart of the Brat Pack, but it still seems weird to me.

Also, I can't believe Mike Sharpe actually got a win.:D

I wish I would have been able to watch more of him around that time...guess I'll try to find some things on youtube to help me with his promos.

As far as Mike goes, it was really Gino getting the win and he was just along for the ride. :) Thanks for following along, BHK!

And a big thank you to the creator of the D.O.T.T. mod and the pictures, something I've been remiss in not mentioning before now.
