XCC: Rise or Fall?

Recommended Posts

*From the Diary of Art Rodman*

Xtreme Cage Combat will live to see it's second year. Not a lot of people expected to see that happen, but I did. Hell, I don't even think Vince expected to see it, not after the money loses and the division cuts.

When Vince opened XCC, he wanted to be GAMMA #2. We had the same five weight divisions. The problem is that the great majority of talented fighters in the larger weight classes are locked under contracts with the big promotions, so we relied on old veterans and no names. It didn't help that this old geezers wanted to make top money for putting the crowd to sleep with their 15-minute "grind out" (more like lay on top of one another in a very sexual way) contests. Most of them where gassed by the time they actually WALKED into the cage. I even considered renting out Golf Karts and using them to ride them to the cage, just to see if we could squeeze at least one decent round out of them. It was hell.

However, there was a shining light. The Lightweights where putting on great bouts. Many of these kids dreamed of using our promotion to springboard their careers into GAMMA, ALPHA-1 or elsewhere. Many of them where too small, too short and basically bulked up Featherweights. I convinced Vince to create a Featherweight Division, bring in more small guys and let them lit it up!

It worked! While the heavier classes kept on putting their slow, boring hug-fests, the lightweights and featherweights kept things alive with their non-stop action contests. But money kept going down.

In the end, Vince had to cut all the weight classes, with the exception of lightweights and featherweights. I also convinced him to bring in the ladies. Women's MMA was a niche market, but they fought their hearts out and since many of them had very little experience, they worked cheap. The final four months of 1997 where a true showing of what we could do: Exciting shows with minimal loses and the potential for growth.

Then came New Year's Eve. Joe Goldberg, our booker, left us after agreeing to work in the GAMMA Match-Making Team. Vince was irate, scared, hell, I think he even cried a little. He thought we where doomed.

After being a helping hand ever since the promotion came into existence, doing everything from setting up the cage to announcing to booking (usually involving me throwing out some ideas, getting shot down and then seeing Goldberg come up with a "Brilliiant" idea that was extremely similar to mine) I decided that this was my chance. I mean, we had only two options: Do or Die. I didn't want to die, so I have to do.

They say it is better to die trying......I hope we don't have to die at all.

On January 1st, 1998, I became XCC's match maker.

Time to Do or Die!

Just a quick update: I am stuck at home after I learned I have H1N1. I am under Tammi Flu medication and I feel better, but I am in no mood to write, so it will probably be Monday by the time I post the first show. Still, just letting you know this is not dead.
