UFC: 2011 and Beyond

Recommended Posts

Please note that in-game simulation of the dynasty will officially begin with UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 - what actually occurs at the real-life UFC 125 event on January 1st, 2011, will be incorporated into this dynasty as I am waiting on the Modern Warriors mod. For now, I will just report on planned changes I am going to be making so that everyone can get the feel for my writing style.

WEC MERGES WITH UFC FOLLOWING HISTORIC FINAL CARD

In what was truly a momentous evening for the sport of mixed martial arts, the California-based promotion World Extreme Cagefighting sang its swan song as it prepares to merge with parent company UFC. The final event, WEC 53, featured two title clashes, and although one match saw the champion win and one saw the challenger emerge victorious, two new champions were crowned.

Bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz was able to cement his status as the top fighter in the 135-pound division with a unanimous decision victory over feisty challenger Scott Jorgensen. With the win, the Dominator improved to 17-1 in his career and became the first ever UFC Bantamweight Champion in the process.

Throughout the fight, Cruz showed superior wrestling, taking down Jorgensen several times and staying active on his feet. After being awarded his new belt, Cruz wasted no time in sharing his interest to avenge his only career loss by making his first defense against WEC legend Urijah Faber. Faber, who was sitting cageside, made his approval known with a gleaming smile.

In the main event of the evening, WEC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson squared off against up-and-coming challenger Anthony Pettis in what was a truly classic sendoff. Undefeated in his two-year run with the promotion, Arizona's Henderson was both the critics' and fans' favourite to win the fight, but 'Showtime' gave him everything he could handle. In a back and forth contest that saw both men nearly end the fight with submissions, it would be Pettis that would upset the champ by decision.

Pettis' victory was likely secured by what is being simply being referred to as 'The Kick.'

With just over a minute in the final round remaining, Pettis ran up the cage and launched into the air towards Henderson, planting a high kick on his cheek. Henderson was knocked down by the Bruce Lee-like move but survived until the end of the round. Indeed, Pettis' trainer Duke Roufus says that the kick was inspired by the cult martial arts film 'Ong Bak'.

While Pettis' path is now clear as he awaits the winner of the Gray Maynard/Frankie Edgar bout, Henderson is a man entering the UFC in a way he hadn't planned for. UFC matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby likely won't hesitate to find the All-American's next opponent.

KERR, AUDINWOOD CUT FROM UFC; LENTZ VS. SHERK ON TAP FOR UFC 128

The aftermath of the two most recent Zuffa events have claimed more casualties, Cage Heroes reports. Both Will Kerr and Pat Audinwood, members of the UFC's Lightweight division, were cut on Friday following losses in their latest outings.

Kerr (9-3) initially confirmed the news via his Twitter account:

wec is part of the ufc now, but i won't be. i'll be back though!

When contacted for confirmation, Kerr indicated he had indeed been let go by the UFC. In his three fights with the WEC, Kerr posted a 1-2 record. He recorded a submission victory over Karen Darabedyan in June but suffered a KO victory at the hands of Danny Castillo at WEC 53, just one minute and 25 seconds in the first round. The fight was dubiously labeled 'loser leaves town' by many.

Pat Audinwood (9-2-1) will now be on the job hunt as well. In a radio interview, Audinwood confirmed that the UFC had released him from his contract. The Team Bombsquad product was a highly touted prospect at 155, entering the UFC undefeated at 9-0-1. However, Audinwood was stopped by Thiago Tavares in the first round of their UFC 119 brawl and then lost to the debuting John Makdessi at UFC 124 last Saturday. But rather than be disheartened, Audinwood remained positive:

"There is no real reason I shouldn't have been cut. I mean, you look at guys in other divisions that get cut just because they have one bad night. I fight in [now] the most competitive division in the company, and on two occasions where I was expected to perform, I didn't, and that's the reality. But I'm only 24, and I'm certain I'll be back."

Indeed, Audinwood's comments ring true. With the absorption of the WEC roster into the UFC, the 155 weight class becomes a bloated division that will surely see some heavy spring cleaning. With roster spots at an absolute premium, it's likely that only the division's superstars will survive losing back to back fights.

Meanwhile, life goes on for UFC's Nik Lentz. Lentz (20-3-2), who is coming off of a controversial split decision victory over divisional standout Tyson Griffin, is reportedly set to take on the biggest fight of his mixed martial arts career, as he has reportedly agreed to a fight with Sean Sherk. Sources close to the fighter claim that the Division I wrestler from El Paso has verbally agreed to the bout.

In five fights with the UFC, Lentz is undefeated, sporting a record of 4-0-1.

The former UFC Lightweight Champion, Sherk (36-4-1) is a teammate of Lentz, training with him at the Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts academy. Sherk too is coming off of a controversial split division win over the previously undefeated Evan Dunham at UFC 119.

Sherk was contacted about the potential matchup, and indeed confirmed that talks are in place. Sherk claims that although the two are friends, he doesn't believe the fight will harm their relationship:

"I agree with what Dana [White] said recently. I don't get why friends don't fight friends. Fights don't hurt friendships - they create them. In every other sport, there are friends on rival teams, and that's what makes the competition so great. I don't think the UFC gets scrutinized unfairly because its an individual sport, so the focus is always on the two guys in the cage. But I mean, look at Kobe Bryant - he helps his team sign players that have the most heated encounters with him on the court. Nik and I both know that its all about business."

Title implications are certainly present in the fight. Sherk, a former champion whose only career losses are all to current or past UFC titleholders in Georges St. Pierre, Frankie Edgar, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes, will look to continue to gain momentum in a division that sees itself more competitive than ever following the WEC merger. On the other hand, Lentz can add serious legitimacy to his undefeated streak in the Octagon with a win over one of the best at 155 pounds.

That's all for now. As this is a realism-focused diary, every rumoured or announced match that is credible enough to appear in the Rumours Section at MMAjunkie.com will be scheduled to take place in my game. I do this for two reasons: first, MMAjunkie is an incredibly reliable source, and second, since I have started following the UFC, every fight that has been rumoured or announced to be taking place, no matter how far in the future it is, has indeed occurred, with the exception of injuries. I'll summarize what matches have been announced for the UFC in the future in the next post, as well as do a quick summary of other important details, such as who is champion and #1 contender in each division, as well as listing the scheduled fight events and their respective location. I hope you all enjoy!

ORTIZ VS. NOGUEIRA TO HEADLINE UFC FIGHT NIGHT 24 IN SEATTLE, DAMACIO PAGE VS. BRIAN BOWLES II SET FOR MARCH

A planned Light Heavyweight tilt between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 128 has been moved to UFC Fight Night 24, which will see the UFC make its debut in Washington State. The event had originally been thought to be taking place in New Mexico, but that has changed.

Ortiz (15-8-1) is winless in his last five fights (0-4-1) and has not won since 2006 when he defeated Ken Shamrock. Many believe that Ortiz will be on his way out should he lose to Nogueira.

Meanwhile, the Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, the twin brother of UFC Heavyweight legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, is coming off of a decision loss to 205 prospect Ryan Bader at UFC 119. The 34 year-old Brazilian is 2-1 in his UFC career, having previously posted victories over Luiz Cane and Jason Brilz.

Another bout in the works is a Bantamweight scrap between Brian Bowles (8-1) and Damacio Page (12-5). Currently scheduled for the preliminary card at UFC's Versus card in March, the fight will be a rematch from WEC 35, where Bowles submitted Page with a guillotine choke in the first round. Page is coming off an upset loss to Demetrious Johnson at WEC 52, while Bowles has been inactive since March 2010 when he surrendered his WEC Bantamweight Championship to current champ Dominick Cruz. The fight was stopped at the conclusion of the second round due to Bowles suffering a broken hand.

The 30 year-old fighter from Georgia has never gone the distance in his nine-fight career. Five of his wins come from submission. A second win against Page would certainly put Bowles back on track for a title shot.

More updates soon.

ST. PIERRE/SHIELDS, VELASQUEZ/DOS SANTOS OFFICIAL FOR UFC'S DEBUT IN TORONTO

LAS VEGAS, NV - In an official press conference outside of company headquarters, UFC President Dana White announced that fights featuring both the UFC Welterweight and UFC Heavyweight Championships will take place at the UFC's first event in Toronto, Ontario.

Titled 'UFC 129: Unbreakable', the event will take place at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, where a record North American crowd is expected.

St. Pierre (21-2), who is fresh off of a successful title defense over Josh Koscheck, surprised some with his interest in fighting on the card due to the short turnaround. The last time St. Pierre fought on four months rest was at UFC 87, when he made his first title defense of his current reign against Jon Fitch.

His opponent, Jake Shields, made a successful debut at UFC 121, escaping with a controversial split decision victory. Shields (26-4-1) was widely considered to be one of the best fighters outside of the UFC prior to his signing in July 2010. He has not lost since 2004 and has only been stopped once in his professional career. His impressive sixteen-fight win streak includes victories over Dan Henderson, Paul Daley, Jason Miller, and current UFC fighters Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit and Mike Pyle.

With St. Pierre having virtually cleared out the entire 170-pound division, it is likely he will make the permanent jump to the Middleweight class should he best Shields, where Anderson Silva reigns supreme. Following the victory over Koscheck, talk has been rampant about a superfight between the two fighters who are almost unanimously thought of as the very best in the world.

"We'll see. If they are up to it, and everything goes along with it, then so am I", said White.

The fight is scheduled to be the main event. When two title fights are featured on the same card it is usually the heavier weight class that receives more emphasis, but St. Pierre will get top billing as the resident Canadian on the card. White admitted that heavyweight fights do have lots of drawing power, but noted that St. Pierre is from Canada and has status as being one of the best in the world.

"Every athlete, fan, trainer, promoter - everybody has Georges St. Pierre in at least their top five pound for pound guys. If they don't, then they don't know what the [expletive] they're talking about."

In addition to the main event, the UFC's top dog at Heavyweight will make his title defense. Cain Velasquez (9-0) confirmed the hype when he demolished Brock Lesnar in the first round of their heavyweight scrap to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship back in October. Now, he faces a hungry Brazilian with some serious boxing power and agility in Junior dos Santos. dos Santos (12-1) is one of the heavyweight division's leaner fighters, often weighing in at around 235 pounds.

dos Santos is coming off of a victory over "Big Country" Roy Nelson at UFC 117, the fight which earned him the title shot. The 26 year-old from Santa Catarina, Brazil punished Nelson with solid striking for three rounds, but the Season 10 winner of 'The Ultimate Fighter' did not go down, losing by decision. The fight was the first for dos Santos to go the distance in his four-year fighting career.

While most of the focus was on those two matchups, Dana White mentioned three other fights that are in the works for the event, which takes place on April 30. Stefan 'Skyscraper' Struve (21-4) is reportedly set to take on 'Big' Ben Rothwell (31-7) in a heavyweight tilt that will certainly benefit both men in the title picture should they come out victorious.

Also rumoured is a welterweight bout between Sean Pierson (11-4) and Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson (8-3). Pierson, who had a successful UFC debut with a unanimous decision victory over Matt Riddle, is from Toronto. Meanwhile, Johnson would be making his first appearance since November 2009 should the fight take place. Johnson was sidelined in 2010 with a knee injury suffered in training.

Another bout in the works is a lightweight matchup between undefeated prospects John 'The Bull' Makdessi (8-0) and Edson Barboza (7-0). Both men had successful debuts in the Octagon recently; Madkessi at UFC 124 and Barboza at UFC 123. Makdessi earned a decision win over Pat Audinwood in Quebec while Barboza won his fight against fellow debutant Mike Lullo via TKO. Barboza stopped Lullo late in the third round after his vicious leg kicks rendered Lullo unable to continue.

More fights are expected to be announced later, but one should expect that UFC will continue its trend of playing to hometown audiences with several bouts featuring Canadian fighters, being that the event is in Ontario.

DUSTIN HAZELETT CUT FROM UFC

Multiple sources confirm that lightweight jiu-jitsu ace Dustin Hazelett (12-7) has been let go from the UFC. The 24 year-old from Ohio went 5-5 in his time with the promotion, and is currently on a three-fight losing streak, suffering stoppage losses to Paul Daley, Rick Story, and Mark Bocek. Originally fighting at welterweight, Hazelett dropped to lightweight to fight Bocek at UFC 124 after his losses to Daley and Story. 155 did not bring Hazelett any success in the Octagon, as he was bested at his own game, being submitted by Bocek with a triangle choke.

Despite his recent performances Hazelett should still be an attractive prospect for other promotions, including Strikeforce. At such a young age, it is almost certain that Hazelett has some time to go before he reaches his prime.

Hazelett was unable for comment following his release.

CHUCK LIDDELL OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

LAS VEGAS, NV -- Following a 1-5 stint in his last six fights, 'The Iceman' is officially hanging up his gloves. But that doesn't mean he is done with the UFC.

UFC CEO Lorenzo Ferttita announced today that the 41 year-old will now serve as executive VP of Business Development, with the key goal of expanding the UFC internationally.

'I love fighting, but I knew it was time to move on. It's time for a new challenge in my life,' said Liddell, when interviewed by MMABOOM Radio.

Widespread calls for Liddell's retirement have been present since UFC 97, when he took on current Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua. After dominating Liddell for most of the first round, Rua took Liddell down with strikes to earn the TKO victory.

A year and two months later, and Liddell was back in the Octagon, facing off against Rich Franklin at UFC 115. Franklin, who was replacing the injured Tito Ortiz, broke his arm in the fight but still managed to knock out Liddell inside of the first round.

At that point, UFC President Dana White was sure Liddell's Octagon career was over, and that seems to be true. In his interview, Liddell said the following:

'Maybe I'll be back one day, for a legendary fight or something I dunno. Randy [Couture] is still at it so why can't I keep fighting?'

JAMIE VARNER, CHRIS HORODECKI CUT FROM UFC

Following recent losses, both Jamie Varner (16-5-1, 1 NC) and Chris Horodecki (16-3) have been cut and will not join the UFC following its absorption of the WEC.

Both men fought for WEC at the 155-pound weight class. Varner is a former WEC Lightweight Champion that is 0-3-1 in his last four fights, while Horodecki had a record of 2-2 during his time in the promotion. Both men suffered submission losses to Shane Roller and Donald Cerrone respectively at WEC 53, which was the promotion's final event before the big merger.

Both men were contacted, and while they are disappointed they accept it as a reality of the business, especially considering the state of the UFC's Lightweight division.

PETTIS, MAYNARD/EDGAR POSSIBLE COACHES FOR TUF 13?

With the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter's thirteenth season just over three months away, speculation has started to formulate on who the coaches will be. Last season featured a showdown between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and challenged Josh Koscheck, who eventually met earlier this month at UFC 124, where GSP defended his title in dominating fashion.

The challenger vs. champion setup is not one that is new to the show. The inaugural season of the show lead to a Light Heavyweight Championship battle between Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture at UFC 52, while Season 7 led to a Light Heavyweight Championship tilt between Quinton Jackson and Forrest Griffin.

So now, it would make sense that rumours are circulating that the next season will feature Anthony Pettis against the winner of the New Year's Day UFC Lightweight Championship fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Other possibilities that have been mentioned are Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben as opposing coaches or the returning Chael Sonnen taking on Wanderlei Silva. Also talked about is Urijah Faber - now that the WEC superstar is officially a UFC fighter, slotting him in as a coach would work well.

None of the fighters mentioned have made official statements regarding their possible inclusion. For now, it remains speculation at best.

I hope to officially start the diary soon. I will enter the results of DREAM's Dynamite!!! 2010 event as well as UFC 125 into the database and then get things running.

That's bs, Chris lost the fight by triangle choke cerrone's signature move, & Chris almost survived

MILLER VS SHALORUS AT UFC 128, MORE MATCHES MADE

A Lightweight battle between Jim Miller (19-2) and WEC product Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2) is set to be on the main card at UFC's 'UFC 128: Shogun vs. Evans' card in New Jersey on March 19th. Jim Miller, who hails from the garden state, will get another chance to be the hometown hero.

Miller last found in New Jersey in March 2009 when the UFC was there for 'UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy', taking on Canadian Mark Bocek. However, Miller's home presence was washed away when the fighter took a controversial split decision win in a fight that many believed Bocek had won, as he had controlled the majority of the action. Since then, Miller has silenced critics, earning a dominating decision win over Gleison Tibau at UFC Fight Night in September and most recently submitting prospect Charles Oliveira at UFC 124 with a slick kneebar.

Following the match, Jim Miller looked directly at Dana White and demanded a title shot, and the AMA Fight Club member has a good case. His only two career losses, both decisions, come from the two men who are fighting for the UFC Lightweight Championship this Saturday: Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Now standing in Miller's way is Kamal Shalorus, who, in nine career fights, has yet to taste defeat. He most recently defeated Bart Palaszewski at the final WEC card via Split Decision. Two days ago, he signed a four-fight deal with the UFC.

One should assume that title implications are very present in this fight.

Other matches that have been announced this week include a Bantamweight title eliminator bout between former WEC champions Eddie Wineland (18-6-1) and Urijah Faber (24-4) also at UFC 128, as well as a Light Heavyweight fight between Luiz Cane (10-3) and Karlos Vemola (8-1) at the same event.

At UFC Fight Night: Ortiz vs. Nogueira, lightweights Alex Caceres (4-2) and Mackens Semerzier (5-3) will do battle. Caceres, known as 'Bruce Leroy', was one of The Ultimate Fighter's most lively characters on its latest season. An injury kept him from fighting on the Finale card this month. Also on tap at the event is a Heavyweight showdown between two men with recent losses to Stefan Struve: Christian Morecraft (6-1) and Sean McCorkle (10-1).

The co-main event will see Dan Hardy (23-8) look to rebound against the returning Anthony Johnson (8-3). Last time out, Hardy was on the wrong end of a vicious knockout punch at the hands of Carlos Condit at UFC 120.

Also scheduled for the event in Seattle:

Welterweight Bout: Amir Sadollah (4-2) vs. Duane Ludwig (20-11)

Middleweight Bout: Mario Miranda (12-2) vs. Aaron Simpson (7-2)

Announced for UFC on Versus: Kampmann vs. Sanchez:

Light Heavyweight Bout: Steve Cantwell (7-3) vs. Cyrille Diabate (16-7)

Lightweight Bout: Shane Roller (9-3) vs. Thiago Tavares (15-3-1)

COUNTDOWN TO UFC 125: RESOLUTION

Mike Goldberg: "Hello all of you UFC fans out there, and welcome to another edition of 'Countdown'! As always, this is your host Mike Goldberg bringing you an inside look at the UFC's upcoming event, 'UFC 125: Resolution'. While many UFC fans will be celebrating the new year this Saturday, there will be 22 men who hope to celebrate a victory in the Octagon. One of those men is UFC Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar, who looks to avenge his only career loss when he takes on challenger Gray Maynard, a man unbeaten in his mixed martial arts career. When these two men first met inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night in April 2008, it was Maynard who walked away with the unanimous decision victory. Since then, both fighters have won five straight, and will now meet in one of the most highly anticipated rematches in UFC history."

A promotional vignette airs, showing clips of Frankie Edgar being crowned the new UFC Lightweight Champion in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112: Invicible

Bruce Buffer: "...now, the NEW UFC Lightweight Champion of the world, 'THE ANSWER', FRANK EDGAR!"

Clips are then shown of Edgar's rematch with BJ Penn at UFC 118, consisting of Edgar taking Penn down to the mat repeated times.

Frankie Edgar: 'I'm the UFC Lightweight Champion, he isn't. He beat me once, but he's not going to do it again. Tonight is the night where I show everyone why I am the absolute best at 155. Worst case scenario is that this fight goes to a decision.'

Video footage of Edgar's submission victory over Matt Veach is shown, followed by his TKO victory over Mark Bocek

Joe Rogan: "Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard. Frankie Edgar is a guy who, beat one of the world's best in BJ Penn in Abu Dhabi, then erased all doubts when he absolutely dominated him in their rematch. He is not the same man that lost to Gray Maynard the first time. He has improved striking, takedowns, and best of all, the guy does not seem to get tired! This fight is set for five rounds but I don't think it would bother Edgar if it went for 15. His cardio is just that good."

Frankie Edgar: "I know I have what it takes to take this fight the distance, but that isn't my goal on January 1st. I'm going to go in quick, and hurt him, and finish the fight, and move on."

Video highlights of Gray Maynard's recent dominance is shown, including the first fight between him and Frankie Edgar. Most of the highlights focus on his relentless takedowns

Gray Maynard: "UFC 125, January 1st, 2011. That's when my reign begins. I've beaten Frankie before, I don't see why there is any doubt that I will do it again. I've got better wrestling, I can stand and trade if that's where he wants to go. I'm going to get my way, and that means that Frankie isn't even going to make it out of the first round. I have respect for Frankie but this is a business and he has what I want."

Joe Rogan: "Gray Maynard may not of won The Ultimate Fighter Season, but he sure fights like he does. He's beaten several standout opponents like Jim Miller, Roger Huerta, Dennis Siver, and even the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5, Nate Diaz. He beat Edgar the first time around and now he's coming off of a fight where he made Kenny Florian, one of the division's best, look completely helpless with his endless takedown offense. He will give Edgar everything he can handle."

Gray Maynard: "Come Saturday, I will be the champ, and I'm not giving up that belt."

Mike Goldberg: "All eyes will be on those two men, but the rest of the evening is sure to entertain, as there are four other great fights on the main card, including the co-main event, which is a Middleweight fight that has 'Fight of the Night' written all over it: Chris 'The Crippler' Leben vs. 'The All American', Brian Stann."

A highlight vignette of Chris Leben's stoppage wins is shown, including knockouts over Aaron Simpson, Terry Martin, and Alessio Sakara

Joe Rogan: "Chris Leben is definitely a guy with knockout power. You can throw all you want at him but he has an iron jaw and if you aren't careful, he will put you to sleep. It's that simple. Only a handful of his fights have gone to the judges' scorecards, and that's because Chris is an aggressive fighter who isn't afraid to get up close and personal. Make one mistake and it's good night."

Chris Leben: "Everyone wants to say that I'm just a waypoint or a gatekeeper, but Saturday night is when I will go out there and prove them all wrong. Brian Stann's a former Marine, but the Octagon is my warzone. I'm the veteran here. This fight isn't even going to last five minutes. I've prepared myself more and I've worked harder for this."

*Highlights of Brian Stann's WEC career are shown, including several stoppage victories*

Joe Rogan: "Brian Stann, former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion. Here is a guy who is a former Marine. UFC fighters are no doubt trained to fight, but this guy is trained to kill. He can end a fight, no doubt about it. None of his fights in WEC went to a decision and only three in his career have, so his matchup with Chris Leben, another guy who has explosive finishes, makes a recipe for a quick and exciting fight. This will be a total war."

Brian Stann: "I like Chris, I watched the original season of The Ultimate Fighter and he was one of my favourites, but at UFC 125 he better realize that friendships don't exist in the Octagon, because I am coming at him with everything I got. Submit him or knock him out, I don't care, but this fight is not going the distance."

Mike Goldberg: "A very exciting fight indeed - a win for either fighter could propel them into the upper ranks of the Middleweight division, while a loss could send them to the back of the line. Also at UFC 125 will be a Lightweight fight between the ever-exciting Clay Guida and former PRIDE champion, 'The Fireball Kid' Takanori Gomi. And in the Light Heavyweight division, two of the UFC's most entertaining fighters will look to make a successful return from injury as Thiago Silva will go head-to-head with Brandon Vera. And opening the night will be a Welterweight war between the unbeaten Dong-Hyun 'Stun Gun' Kim, and the always controversial Nate Diaz."

A screen then displays the preliminary card for UFC 125

Featherweight Division: Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier

Lightweight Division: Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens

Welterweight Division: Greg Soto vs. Daniel Roberts

Middleweight Division: Brad Tavares vs. Phil Baroni

Lightweight Division: Antonio McKee vs. Jacob Volkmann

Featherweight Division: Mike Brown vs. Diego Nunes

Mike Goldberg: "That's all the time we have for tonight. As always, I am your host Mike Goldberg, and this has been another edition of 'UFC: Countdown'! From all of us at UFC, SpikeTV and Zuffa, we wish you a safe and happy holidays and a happy new year! We'll see you on Saturday!"

Really looking forward to the card tonight. Not going to lie, I have some certain fighters I am pulling to win so I can start making some plans for the diary. Enjoy the fights everyone!

The judges' scored the contest 48-46 Edgar, 48-46 Maynard and 47-47. Despite failing to capture the coveted belt, Gray Maynard (10-0-1, 1 NC) remains unbeaten in 12 professional outings.

All three judges' scored the first round 10-8 for Maynard, who floored Edgar twice with a serious of punches. However, Edgar was able to stay conscious and hold on to survive the round.

The next rounds were very closely contested, with both men scoring takedowns and winning key standup exchanges.

Both men were visibly disappointed with the draw, feeling they had both won the fight. With two of the judges scoring the fight for either fighter, those feelings were legitimate.

At the UFC 125 Post-Fight Press Conference, UFC Vice President Craig Borsari announced that final WEC Lightweight Champion Anthony 'Showtime' Pettis would get his scheduled title shot. However, just two hours later, Dana White officially announced that a third fight will occur in the Edgar-Maynard saga.

"The reality is, that Gray Maynard went out there and fought the fight of his life. He deserves a rematch. Even Frankie thinks that. Anthony was given the opportunity to fight the winner of Gray and Frankie, and we don't have that yet," White said in an interview.

Meanwhile, things couldn't have been any more decisive in the night's co-main event. Brian Stann, making just his second appearance at 185, would put a crushing halt to Chris Leben's three fight win streak inside of the first round. Both men promised a standup war, and Stann delivered, repeatedly tagging the UFC veteran with powerful strikes. After Leben was downed, referee Josh Rosenthal gave him every opportunity to recover, but would have to stop the fight at three minutes, 37 seconds into Round 1.

At the conference, Stann respectfully requested Wanderlei Silva to be his next opponent. Silva, who has been sidelined with injuries since last summer, was a man Leben himself had called out after replacing him in his fight at UFC 116. Fresh off of a TKO stoppage over Aaron Simpson two weeks earlier, Leben would finish Yoshihiro Akiyama off with a triangle choke. Looking to ride the momentum, Leben promised to take down the former Marine with a bang but his plan never came to fruition.

Also in action were Light Heavyweights Thiago Silva and Brandon Vera, who were both returning from long layoffs due to injuries. Despite having not fought in 364 days, it would be Thiago Silva who would turn in a dominating performance in an unanimous decision victory over the former Heavyweight prospect.

In the second bout of the night, Korean Judokan Dong-Hyun Kim would remain unbeaten in his 16 fight career, improving to 14-0-1 with one no contest. The 29 year-old made good on several takedowns on his opponent, the always exciting Nate Diaz, who suffered his first loss at Welterweight. Once again, Kim expressed interest to fight 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre, a fight that is a long shot if at all possible.

In the night's opener, Clay Guida remained a legitimate title threat after he disposed of PRIDE FC Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi with a guillotine choke in the second round. Displaying a high-energy tempo throughout the fight, Guida moved around wildly and unpredictably, a tactic that no doubt confused Gomi. Gomi now falls to 1-2 in three fights in the UFC. Here's a quick recap of what went down:

Lightweight Bout: Antonio McKee vs. Jacob Volkmann

-Volkmann defeated McKee via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29).

Welterweight Bout: Daniel Roberts vs. Greg Soto

-Roberts defeated Soto via submission (kimura) at 3:45 of round 1.

Featherweight Bout: Diego Nunes vs. Mike Brown

-Nunes defeated Brown via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29).

Middleweight Bout: Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares

-Tavares defeated Baroni via KO (strikes) at 4:20 of round 1.

Featherweight Bout: Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier

-Poirier defeated Grispi via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Lightweight Bout: Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens

-Stephens defeated Davis via KO (punch) at 2:33 of round 3.

Lightweight Bout: Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi

-Guida defeated Gomi via submission (guillotine choke) at 4:27 of round 2.

Welterweight Bout: Dong-Hyun Kim vs. Nate Diaz

-Kim defeated Diaz via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Light Heavyweight Bout: Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva

-Silva defeated Vera via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).

Middleweight Bout: Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann

-Stann defeated Leben via TKO (strikes) at 3:37 of round 1.

Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar © vs. Gray Maynard

-Edgar and Maynard fought to a split draw (48-46, 48-46, 47-47). Fight For The Troops 2 has been simmed and I will be writing it up tonight. Good luck with your predictions and thanks for following!
