Remove term from word filter

Recommended Posts

I propose that the word c0ck be removed from the word filter, or at least its filtering when used as a part of a larger word.

Problem being that c0ck is used just as often, if not more, in common language as it is a profanity, and the filter messes it all up.

  • "He ****ed his head to one side, inquistively."
  • "She spoke to him in a ****y and arrogant tone"
  • "The NBC Pea**** logo displayed and the show was over. And then an advertisement for Joe ****er's greatest hits album came on" (okay perhaps this is not going to happen often)
  • "He ****ed his arm back before punching him right in the kisser and going for the pin"
  • "Big Scott Smack knocked the ****tails out of his hand before uppercutting him to the moon"

If you consider writing descriptive text and dialogue in diaries one issue of it, also consider that this applies equally for any image linking (and in doing so, breaks the image) which can make things a royal pain in the back. Especially considering that at least one worker in TEW's c-verse has a name, and therefore image filename, with the word c0ck in it (annie hitch****).

I can understand the need for a word filter, and why everything else on on that list, since there's very little chance of them being used in a non profane manner (perhaps with the exclusion of some foreign names), but "c0ck" can go 50/50 and has very legitimate usage for these boards (especially if you play BSC with Annie Hitch**** ;)).

Cheers

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't word filter's already built into the websights? I mean, some do some don't filter bad words, but I don't believe you've ever had the option to just unfilter one word. Kind of like all or nothing. IF I'm even half right, I think everyone would agree to keep it like it is rather then not having any kind of filter.

That being said, if I'm wrong... I wouldn't have a clue how to include some words using it as opposed to other words or sentences using it. Many different ways that are not "bad" could be used "badly" if one wanted to do so.

As someone who loves nothing more then talking about c0ck, I agree whole heartedly with lifting the c0ck ban.

But, seriously, these forums are well policed, weather by mods or other members. It's not like any infractions or abuses of the ban being lifted would go unnoticed or be problematic for very long. Have faith in the core community is all I'm saying.

All comes down to how the forum software running behind the scenes works. I'm not one to speculate on how vBulletin works, but I have modded on a forum in the past where you set a blacklist of words to filter specifically. Including whether they were filtered if only used as a single word (e.g., "it's a giant ****") or if they were a part of another word (e.g., "don't run into the situation half-****ed").

Course it's all up to the mods, regardless. I've said my bit so whatever happens happens :)

Ass isn't banned so I don't see why c0ck is. Makes no sense.

Of course I'm against censorship of any kind except hate language, so to me I wouldn't even want any words filtered except for the racial slurs (we all know what words I'm talking about here). "Profanity" is overrated and based on thin grounds to begin with. I could see "the f word" being filtered, but that's about the only one that gets anyone riled up nowadays no matter what country you're from.

So yeah, honestly, get rid of the word filter altogether, or only leave the TRULY bad words (racial slurs and "the f word") in it.

While we're at it, remove mod approval for messages. Not worth coming here with my TEW2010 questions when it takes days to see my post...

It's a minor inconvenience for you to wait for approval, but a system that helps keep the board free from the spambots that would otherwise completely over-run the board. With no better option for identifying bots, it would not be a smart move to remove mod approval.

Just to chip in...

For those who don't know about the spambots, they fill up the first page of this subforum every 30 minutes with their spam. It's worst for this forum since it's the first one on the boards, but it affects every other forum on the boards too, with at least a half dozen spam threads created and as many more random posts made every day. Without moderation the forums would be virtually unusable, filled with porn, viruses, links to places promising illegal downloads, meds and all sorts of other things. :(

As for the topic at hand...

This is a PG forum, which means PG content so that youngsters have access to the forums and all the games within. I know of people as young as 12 who use this site regularly and I know that some of what people are asking for on here would not be appropriate for that age bracket, nor would most people be comfortable using such words around them. There are always some people who will want more freedom to do what they want on the forums, but it's ultaimtely about providing GDS the best chance to make the most money for their games. If that means some censorship of content to ensure the best results for GDS as a business, then that is how things are likely to continue for the forseeable future.

Though I must admit, not being able to say ****y is annoying since it's so commonly used in pro wrestling vocabulary. I don't have access to the word filter so don't know how it works, but that would be a fairly welcomed change for me... despite what I just said above this. :p

While I am in agreement with you as my very young cousin is on the boards I do think the blocked word list needs a bit of cleaning up. You can't say c0cky but you can call someone a bitch.

@derek: just throwing it out there, but having a board full of porn links and pirated software wouldnt be the worst thing in the world ;)

As for the word filter. I propose a trade: You can block "bitch" and give us c0ck. (dont make dirty jokes, im being serious)

I would propose ass but its far too common (

asset

assassin

crass

grass

etc.)

bitch isnt short for anything, isnt a part of any words (cept for bitchin')

Heck, in the southpark movie they dont even include c0ck in the swear words song :D

Well bitch slap is one of the words in the Wrestling Spirit game.

I'll have to agree with Prague (nice to see you back, dude). Why can we say bitch (that virtually has no use in here) and not c0ck, a terminology that is extremely useful on wrestling? loool

It wouldn't concern me either way just be glad it only edits the words with *'s after you click submit reply and not erases your post completely. I used to play an mmo game that if you had a word that was on their list singularly or as part of a word and hit enter it would just come up as " this message has been blocked for using bad language " xyz " .

Imagine playing a computer game when you can't say computer, or a rpg where you can't say assassin (which was one of the classes by the way.) I guess what i'm saying is take the good with the bad.

If they did remove that word from the list, i'm sure someone being immature (even though this is hands down the best internet community i've been a part of) would use it to insult or argue with someone.
