TEWFan
BLURCAT Breaking News: Alderson leaves GAMMA, Joins Guerra in FLB by Scott Avatar This is something that I did not expect to write about this morning. The head matchmaker for the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts Joel Alderson has resigned from the company and opted to follow Raymundo Guerra to Brazil and his Vale Tudo promotion Fight League Brazil. There are no more details about why or how this situation came to pass, but many "insiders" claim that Alderson had been against the direction the company was going for some time. The new system employed by GAMMA and many other promotions known as the "Universal Rules of MMA" has caused plenty of controversy already and Alderson's exit from the biggest MMA league in the world seems to be directly related to this. Although he feels the ban on One Night Tournaments is justified, the lack of knees and kicks on the ground severly limit the fighter's ability to defend themselves on the ground and, according to Alderson himself in an interview he had with us last year, will end up favoring BJJ, wrestling and Judo practicioners over those from striking disciplines. "MMA should be a sport in which the elite martial artists from every discipline get to test themselves against the elite from other disciplines in an even playing field, providing equal opportunity for both fighters to demostrate who is superior. The new rules, well, they clearly limit the options certain disciplines have when fighting on the ground and favors other disciplines. To me, that is not an even playing field. " Back in 1992, Raymundo Guerra helped create the GAMMA league, using his knowledge of fighters and his influence in the thriving Vale Tudo circuit in Brazil to help launch the worldwide phenomenon that would later be dubbed Mixed Martial Arts. When the promotion started running events on a consistent basis they brought in Alderson as head match maker. Guerra left in 1996 to form a new league in Brazil that would follow the Vale Tudo rules he grew up with. At the time Guerra's exit was seen by many as a sign that not everything was alright in GAMMA, especially after the implementation of the new rule set. Alderson's exit to join Guerra just two years after Fight League Brazil was founded seems to confirm that fact. Stay tuned to BLURCAT for more information as it becomes availible. **OFF DIARY NOTE*** This diary will be written from the perspective of a MMA journalist, so expect a lot more reading and a lot less fancy pictures. I am looking for a Sherdog-like format and presentation, so I will be writing about other companies as well. Think of this as a mix between a "my promotion" diary and a "watching the world go by" diary.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Rule Changes, Featherweights Coming to FLB Last night marked the official press conference in which Joel Alderson was introduced by Raymundo Guerra as the new match maker for FLB. Alderson refused to comment on his exit from GAMMA, instead focusing on the future of Fight League Brazil, the company that he described as "the only league that is trying to bring real Mixed Martial Arts to the world". Alderson was quick to point out that FLB will be using their own set of rules instead of following the Universal rules of MMA. As BLURCAT readers know, FLB allows for soccer kicks, stomps to grounded opponents and knee strikes on the ground. There was a slight revision to the rules: Alderson stated that FLB was running the "GAMMA format" of 3 5 minute rounds for non-title fights and 5 five minute rounds for title fights. That format has been thrown out the door in favor of 2 ten minute rounds for non-title fights and 3 10 minute rounds for title fights. "I am a firm believer in 30 minute fights, but I believe that by splitting the fight in rounds the fighters not only get some rest, but also a chance to change their tactics." The second surprise announcement was that FLB will be following the footsteps of promotions like XCC, SIGMA and KDMFC by bringing in the Featherweights. "We are in the process of signing talented featherweights from around the world to fight for us. We will be creating a whole new division, adding a new title belt and showcasing some of the best talents in the lighter weight classes". More details are expected to emerge soon, including names of the Featherweights and when the first FLB event will take place.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Weekly Recap 01/01/1998-01/08/1998 GAMMA 22 Revealed Shortly after Joel Alderson left GAMMA, Lance Decker was quick to announce the upcoming GAMMA 22 card. GAMMA 22: Regueiro vs Humphreys will take place on February 4th, 1998 from the Lucky Seven Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card will be headlined by Julio Regueiro defending the GAMMA Welterweight Title against "The Show Stopper" Jack Humphreys. Regueiro (20-0) will be defending the GAMMA Welterweight Title that he won from Nathan Chambers on July of last year. This will be his second defense of the title, after stopping "Iron Jaw" Peter Bracewell by TKO in October of last year. The undefeated Spaniard is a master of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and BLURCAT's #1 Welterweight in the world. He is also our #2 Pound for Pound fighter under Hazzan Fezzik. Humphreys (17-6) is our #17 ranked Welterweight and is on a 3-fight winstreak that includes a 2nd-Round KO of Dana Delaney, a Unanimous Decision win over Jim Carpenter and most recently a 2nd-Round Submission of Dan Halvorsen in November. The wrestling prodigy from Mobile, Alabama will be getting his second career title shot after he lost to Nathan Chambers by 4th-Round TKO last year. The Co-Main Event will pit the fast rising Nicholas Bretton (10-3) against our #7 Ranked Lightweight Truck Gleeson (21-4-1 NC) in a fight that could easily determine the next title challenger in the Lightweight Division. Also on the card is a clash between top 15-ranked Welterweights Darin Blood (13-4, #15 WW) and Rufus Stephens (16-1, #9 WW) and a Light Heavyweight Clash pitting "Ironman" Junior Patinkin (14-1, #12 LHW) against the veteran former Heavyweight Champion of the World Mark "The Thing" Cohen (34-7-1). The preliminary card features a Light Heavyweight clash between John Rivero (12-2, #24 LHW) and Bill Cumming (27-12), the undefeated Light Heavyweight Ken Peters (8-0) against the dangerous veteran Bryan Van Den Hauwe (15-4) and a Welterweight duel between fast-rising prospect Bobby "All Star" Brubaker (10-3) and veteran former title contender "Iron Jaw" Peter Bracewell (20-7). Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon. FLB Sign Russell McPhee Add another former GAMMA name to FLB's roster. As the company tries to expand and bring in world-wide talent, former GAMMA Heavyweight contender Russell "Russellmania" McPhee (16-6) has signed a 3-fight deal with Fight League Brazil. The 32-year old Kickboxer has won consecutive fights on the smaller circuit for American Pride Fighting, a small North American promotion, after his GAMMA contract was terminated following back to back losses to Raul Hughes and Tank Manu'a. He went 2-3 in GAMMA, also losing his debut to Jeff Carlton before snapping consecutive KO victories over Milton Harvey and Marvin Stevens, the last one a KO of the Night performance. McPhee is one of "a few" names FLB has targeted to add to their Heavyweight division according to inside sources. FLB Adds 4 Featherweights The new FLB Featherweight Division is starting to take shape. 4 new talents, of a potential list of over 20 fighters have already signed to join the promotion. The better known of the four is Indonesian So Yip, who was recently let go from his Kadena de Mano Fighting Circuit contract after losing a title bout to Li-Kong Ho. Yip (10-4) went 3-1 in his KDMFC career and it was surprising to many that he was let go after one loss. American power puncher "Barrage" Brian Claremont (4-1) has also been signed. Claremont had been targeted by XCC as well, but it seems FLB offered more money. Although he has never fought outside of the smaller circuit in which he debuted with a decision loss to Jay Dorridge last year, Claremont has won 4 consecutive fights after that loss, including 3 spectacular knockouts that have made waves on the internet's VideoTube service. Recently he knocked out regional fighter Alexander Crosby with a huge uppercut in the first round of an American Pride Fighting show in Colorado. The other two are little known to the MMA audience. Yagi Jokichi (4-0) is a 22-year old Japanese fighter with a Karate background. He has competed mainly for SAMURAI Fight Club, a regional league in Japan, where he has shown a knack for counter-striking and has produced some solid victories. Apolonio Redondo Jr (1-0) is a Phillipines-born Taekwando fighter who apparently impressed in his debut for regional promotion Pacmania Fights and was quickly offered a deal. Stay tuned to BLURCAT for more on FLB's Featherweight Division. Results from Around the World: Stevens, Loeb win fights American Pride Fighting held a small show in Colorado on Tuesday where former GAMMA Heavyweight contender Marvin Stevens (22-10) returned to his winning ways with a spectacular knockout of regional fighter Todd Vote. The KO happened only 19 seconds into the fight when Stevens caught Vote flush with a right hook to the jaw and knocked him out. In the Co-Main Event, another former GAMMA fighter returned to his winning ways when Harvey Loeb (7-3) defeated local fighter Mark Zuckenberg via Round 1 Armbar submission. Loeb was cut from GAMMA late last year after going 0-2 with the promotion, with losses to Tank Manu'a and Rick Stanley. The 25-year old Heavyweight hopes that this victory puts him back on the map with the big promotions. Also on the card veteran Heavyweight Nash Harbane (13-11) defeated local fighter Bruce Willis via Round 2 TKO, middleweight Chaz Babish (8-2) KO'ed Michael Johnson at 1:41 of Round 3, Women's MMA prospect Shannon Palmer (3-0) KO'ed Alissa Milano via Head Kick at 1:03 of Round 2, Puerto Rican middleweight prospect Billy Rusell (2-0) defeated Danny Phantom via Round 2 Ankle Lock submission and journeyman Bronson Berle (4-3) won an Unanimous Decision over Prince Fatsom. ALPHA-1 Sign Hyun-Shik Lim As expected, undefeated Hyun-Shik Lim (10-0, #18 LHW) has signed a deal with ALPHA-1. After ten consecutive KO wins in the regional circuit for SAMURAI Fight Club and Power Fight ATOM, the exciting Lim will finally get to test his skill against some of the top Light Heavyweights in the world. FLB Adds More Heavyweights, Former GAMMA names The expansion of the Fight League Brazil roster continues to expand. Former GAMMA Title Contender Christopher Sharp has signed a 3-fight deal with the promotion. Sharp (34-12) is best remembered for surprisingly reaching the finals of the GAMMA Heavyweight Title Tournament in 1996 and losing via Rear-Naked Choke to Mark Cohen. Prior to that he had beaten Leon Banks via TKO and one of the tournament favorites, Jeff Carlton, via Second Round KO. His GAMMA career went downhill after that. He defeated Milton Harvey and Nash Harbane by TKO in his next two fights, but lost 3 straight afterwards, to a decision loss to Fatuma Roy, a KO loss to James Foster and a KO loss to Raul Hughes. After that he spent some time in ALPHA-1 where he went 1-2 and was cut after consecutive losses to Hazzan Fezzik and Mason Archer. He expects to turn his career around in Fight League Brazil. Later on the week, FLB announced the signing of Jesse "The Spartan" Singh (13-4). Singh is another former GAMMA Heavyweight who went 1-2 with the promotion, winning his debut against Reindhart Rhett and being cut after consecutive losses to Rick Stanley and Norbert Vinkus. In his last two bouts, Singh defeated journeyman Bronson Berle by TKO for American Pride Fighting and lost to Steve Mason via KO in a Viper Fight Club card. Sherman "The Tank" Shields (17-10) became the third new heavyweight added in the week. Shields had two fights for GAMMA going 1-1, a decision win over Marvin Stevens and a KO loss to Raul Hughes. Shields then went to Europe and competed for SIGMA and lost his only bout to Terron Cabal. After a decision win over Joseph King in a local card for Maple Leaf MMA in Canada, Shields lost to prospect Jutaro Honma in an ALPHA-1 card. The final Heavyweight added this week is Norman Pike (16-4, #25 HW). Pike competed as a Heavyweight in the first ever GAMMA Heavyweight Title Tournament and lost in the first round via KO to Jeff "The Rock" Carlton. Consecutive wins over Nash Harbane, Eugene Clough and Tank Manu'a led to Pike getting a title shot and losing to James Foster via TKO. Pike then dropped to the Light Heavyweight Division and defeated Mark Cohen via KO, but lost to surging undefeated prospect Ken Peters via TKO. He left GAMMA and went to BCF in the UK as a Heavyweight, where he got consecutive KO of the Night honors in his victories over Dave Lennon and Bob Dozier before leaving the promotion on a contract dispute. His last 3 fights have been wins as well, putting him on a 5 fight winstreak, beating Joseph King via KO for Maple Leaf MMA, Manol Sirakov via Submission for Germany Super Fights and Brady Crawford via TKO for American Pride Fighting. FLB Adds More Featherweights It seems the members of the new FLB Featherweight Division are set. Most of them are relatively young and unknown prospects, but a few standouts have been signed since last week. Taizoh Chung Man (15-6) is a Kadena de Mano veteran that holds victories over Bae Yoon and Tessai Satou, but lost 3 straight fights and was dropped, including a KO loss to Li-Kong Ho last year. Seigo Tsuda (38-27-2) is another veteran that originally competed at lightweight for ALPHA-1, holding a 11-7-2 record for the promotion, before dropping to featherweight and competing for Kadena de Mano (he went 1-4 in the promotion) and lately for BUSHIDO Fights and Viper Fight League in Japan and Asia. Ruben Ericcson (8-2-1) is a veteran of the SIGMA Featherweight Division and holds victories over Liam O'Donnel and Maurice Braudel, but lost 2 straight and was dropped, a horrible KO loss to Fiyero Lermontov sealing his fate. He has won 2 straight bouts by KO in the regional circuit for Red Star MMA in Russia. Noah Smithee (7-4) is a veteran of the XCC Featherweight Division and holds a victory over veteran Joel Adams, but was cut after back to back losses to Azor Portela Nunes and Anthony Ray Shenkman. Recently he defeated June Dawson by KO in a American Pride Fighting event. Najib Sri Azziz Bin Zai (38-10-2) is another Kadena de Mano veteran who holds a 9-7 promotional record, but was cut after 4 straight defeats. He won his next 3 bouts for BUSHIDO Fights, but lost his only bout with Viper Fight League to up and coming prospect Kei Maki. The rest of the signings are: Alejando Laguera (1-0) Ang Dong (1-0) Britt Dickering (3-0) David James Diggle (3-0) Foggy Lee (5-1) Freddy Lomax (1-0) Hans Christian Bloch (2-0) Heiko Pander (1-0) Jay Dorridge (4-0) Jinzaburo Iseki (10-6) Kei Maki (3-0) Lamont Banner (1-0) Liam O'Donnel (5-2) Markus Weller (1-0) Mino Reale (3-3) Nuno Valentino (2-0) Paco del Rio (3-1) Sebastian Nebaco (9-6-1) Zuneir Merquior (2-0)

TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: KDM: FC 4: Ho Wins Title, Shimizu Still Undefeated 231 fans where on hand for Kadena de Mano Fighting Championship's 4th big event in Eastern Asia. The show kicked off with a Featherweight bout in which Yoshrio Makamori (10-0, #21 FW)) continued his undefeated streak and his fast rise in the Featherweight Rankings when he defeated Kanji Togo (12-6) via Round 3 Armbar Submission. Makamori and Togo fought two even rounds in which they traded leather, with Makamori rocking Togo twice in the bout. In round 3 it was Togo who rocked Makamori, but Makamori recovered and took the fight to the ground, finishing it with the Armbar in what was billed as "BLURCAT's Fight of the Night". In spite of the apparent difference in talent, Chiyo Yanagimoto (8-1, #2 WFW) was unable to finish a game Ayame Kondo (4-2) in their fight, which ended in a Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28) win for Yanagimoto. Kondo came out roaring in the first round, taking the fight to Yanagimoto and catching her by surprise with her relentless attack. However, she gassed early in the second round and Yanagimoto was able to cruise the rest of the way for the victory on points. In what was billed an upset, fast rising prospect Chan Wah Wah (7-0) defeated Takahiro Nakamura (22-6, #15 FW) by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) in another excellent bout. Wah Wah dominated all three rounds in our eyes (Blurcat scored the bout 30-27 for Wah Wah) by using effective counterstriking and preventing Nakamura from using his wrestling to smother his attacks. A controversial moment occured early in the 3rd-round when Wah Wah grabbed Nakamura in the Muay Thai clinch and started nailing knees to the face. Nakamura collapsed and Wah Wah broke the hold, thinking Nakamura was out, but the ref ordered the fight to continue. Yutsuko Sasaki (6-0, #6 WPFP, #5 WFW) added another win to her stellar career by outpointing Naora Kikuchi (4-1, #18 WFW) in a lopsided affair (30-27,30-27,30-27) in which she took Kikuchi down at will and worked her ground and pound for three rounds. An argument can be raised for Women's MMA in Asia as the oversized gloves might have kept Kikuchi in the fight, otherwise she would have been knocked out cold by the relentless attack from Sasaki. Sasaki herself looked frustrated at the fact that she could not finish her opponent. In yet another fight that went to a decision and in what Blurcat believed was the worse fight of the night, Hanako Shimizu (8-0, #4 WFW) defeated Echiko Watanabe (4-1, #23 WFW) by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28,29-28) in a boring and plodding fight. Watanabe tried to and ocassionally managed to use her upper body strength and control Shimizu against the cage, while Shimizu basically spent the whole fight backpedalling and counterstriking. In the main event, "Little Dragon" Li-Kong Ho (19-0, #5 PFP, #1 FW) continued his dominance by becoming the new KDM:FC Featherweight Champion after forcing Tomohiro Takeguchi (16-3, #10 PFP, #3 FW) to tap out with a Rear-Naked Choke with only 0:45 seconds left in the fight. "Little Dragon" won the first three rounds by taking down and controlling Takeguchi, but the champ showed his fighting spirit and came back in the 4th round, almost knocking out Ho with a relentless barrage of strikes. Ho was able to withstand the hurricane and survive the round, but he looked wobbly while walking back to his corner. The final round was more of the same, as Ho fought defensively and tried to earn the win on points until he was able to stuff a takedown late in the fight, putting Takeguchi down in turtle position. Ho worked hard to secure the hooks and lock on the choke, forcing Takeguchi to tap before he was put to sleep. Li Kong-Ho won Blurcat's Submission of the Night award. TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: Regueiro Retains Title, Gleeson Defeats Bretton In front of 4000 fans, Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts presented GAMMA 22 in Las Vegas Nevada. The preliminary card began with Bobby Brubaker (11-3) outpointing former title challenger Peter Bracewell (20-8) in a Welterweight bout. Brubaker outstruck and dominated Bracewell, but the man they call "Iron Jaw" stood up to his nickname and refused to go down in spite of Brubaker's relentless strikes. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Brubaker. Brubaker suffered a broken hand in the 3rd Round and will likely miss 6-8 weeks with the injury. Yet another statement for Iron Jaw's Jaw. Ken Peters (9-0) continued his undefeated streak after forcing crafty veteran Bryan Van Den Hauwe (15-5) to tap to an armbar at 2:36 of Round 2. The first round was very even in the stand-up department and was really difficult to score (Blurcat had it 10-9 Peters) but in the second round Peters switched gears and took the fight to the ground and was able to secure the victory. This fight earned Blurcat's Fight of the Night honors. In the final preliminary bout, John Rivero (13-2, #24 LHW)) submited "Wild" Bill Cumming (27-13) with an Arm Triangle at 1:38 of the 2nd Round. The bout was switched to an Openweight Contest after Rivero failed to make weight and came in 6 pounds over the limit. GAMMA fined Rivero and took away 20% of his purse for failing to make weight. The PPV broadcast began with fast rising Junior Patinkin (15-1, #12 LHW) defeating Mark "The Thing" Cohen (34-8-1) via Round 2 TKO after unloading on Cohen with strikes. There was never any doubt as of who was going to win the fight since Patinkin controlled the fight since the beginning and almost made Cohen tap to an armbar late in the 1st Round, but the round ended before the tap. In the worst fight of the night, an extremely slow and technical contest, Rufus Stephens (17-1, #9 WW) outpointed Darin Blood (13-5, #15 WW) with all three judges scoring the bout 29-28 for Stephens. The bout was all about takedowns and takedown defense, with a lot of grappling occuring on the ground. The technically superior Stephens was able to control the majority of the fight, but the long stretches of inaction made the crowd restless. The Co-Main Event was as exciting and one-sided as it was shot. Truck Gleeson (22-4-1, #7 LW) showed that he deserves another crack at the Lightweight championship when he defeated Nicholas Bretton (10-4) by TKO in just 35 seconds. Gleeson countered a jab with a scorching uppercut that put Bretton down as soon as the fight started and continued to pound on him on the ground until the ref jumped in to wave the fight. Gleeson earned Blurcat's Knockout of the Night award and GAMMA President Lance Decker blogged that Gleeson was now his #1 choice to challenge Sean Morrison in the future. Of course, we know Decker's fickle mind and that can change at any time. In the Main Event, Julio Regueiro (21-0, #1 WW) added yet another win to his stellar career when he defeated Jack Humphreys (22-7, #17 WW) by Submission with a Kimura at 3:18 of Round 3. Humphreys was game and had a few brilliant moments, mainly in the stand-up department, but he never threatened the champ who kept his cool and worked himself into controlling the bout. After the match Regueiro said he would love to face Rufus Stephens next.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Weekly Recap 02/02/1998-02/09/1998 GAMMA 23 Confirmed! GAMMA Middleweight Champion Matthew Dean (31-5, #1 MW, #12 PFP) will defend his title for the third time against Dexter "D-Man" Darling (17-2-1, #3 MW, #20 PFP) in the main event of GAMMA 23 according to GAMMA President Lance Decker. Darling has won six straight bouts and has a 7-1 promotional record. In his last fight, Darling sent veteran Bradley Dixon packing from GAMMA with a Round 1 KO victory. The Co-Main Event will be a pivotal Lightweight matchup between Brandon "Sugar Rush" Sugar (24-4, #4 LW, #24 PFP) against fast-rising former XCC talent Henry "King" Baldwin (7-2). Baldwin has won his two GAMMA fights thus far, including a Round 2 KO of former contender (and now XCC talent) Duane Weatherly. Rush has won 3 straight since his Unanimous Decision loss to Sean Morrison in a title bout last year. Two Top 25 Heavyweights will collide in the PPV undercard, with Tony McCall (32-10, #17 HW) facing "Chief" Fatuma Roy (20-8, #22 HW). Both men have 3-fight winstreaks and will battle for a better position in the stacked GAMMA Heavyweight Division. Another pivotal Heavyweight matchup will see Tank Manu'a (17-5) battling Leon Banks (31-10). Manu'a has won two straight fights since his loss to Raul Hughes, including a TKO win over former contender Graham Goodbody. Banks lost his last fight, a Unanimous Decision loss to Fatuma Roy that took him out of the Blurcat Top 25 rankings. Light Heavyweights Ricky Heath (13-4) and Derek South (13-3) will battle in a clash of heavy-handed fighters in the only preliminary bout of the card. FLB Signs Former GAMMA Talents, Locals Return to FLB The expansion of Fight League Brazil continues as several former GAMMA talents have been signed this week and several talents that where cut by FLB last year have reached agreements to return to the promotion. Former GAMMA Welterweight Contenders Callum Henson (18-7), Joe Hinchcliffe (20-12), Geoff Cahill (47-23), Lee Bould (16-9), Zachary Gilbert (11-6) and former ALPHA-1 Contender Wasichi Kobayashi (11-4) have all signed deals with Fight League Brazil to help bolster their welterweight roster. Joining them will be American Pride Fighting veteran Ray Eaton (7-1) and Monterrey Vale Tudo champion Agustin Gonzales (8-3). Several former FLB talents from the Lightweight division have also been signed back to the promotion after being let go last year. They include Erico Gill (16-10), Juan Pablo Rique (12-8) and Vale Tudo icon Gustavo Bautista (62-23-9). The promotion is also seeking talented prospects, so expect to hear of even more talents getting brought in. Results from Around the World: The Pitt MMA debuts in Delaware: Brannagh, Sky, Hoynes win fights A new small MMA group called The Pitt MMA ran their first show in Delaware last night. In the main event, Justin "Wild Thing" Brannagh (4-0) defeated Justin Nichols via Round 2 TKO to add another win to his short career. Brannagh is an exciting striker that many believe has potential to reach the big companies. Two other notable fighters competed at the show. Former Texas University wrestling standout Sam Hoynes (2-0) won his second fight, a Round 1 TKO victory over Lee Price. Meanwhile, former Kickboxing USA Champion Logan Sky (2-0) also won his second MMA fight, a Round 2 TKO win over Ramon Aranda. The rest of the card featured featherweight Pat "Blue Boy" Troy (2-0) defeating Mark Whalberg by Round 1 TKO, Eric Darthmouth (2-0) defeating Raymond Chris via Round 2 TKO in a Light Heavyweight contest, barrel-chested Heavyweight Jacob Barlee (3-0) defeated Martin Peterson via Round 3 TKO and 3 Women's MMA bouts in which Joan Whitehouse (2-0) destroyed Evelyn Martinez via Round 1 TKO in only 35 seconds, Katy-Jane Paulson (2-0) outpointed Amelia Carrasco and Tanya Duke (2-1) outpointed Mary Pierce. TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: Hewitt Retains Title in XCC Show 189 fans attended XCC: Hewitt vs Gray at the Kobe Bryant Gym in Los Angeles, California. Although it was a really good card, the show started on a bad note. In a very poor match, one of the worst XCC fights ever, James Bustfield (8-3) returned to his winning ways with a Unanimous Decision win over XCC newcomer Hetcher Durante (2-1). The match featured both men refusing to engage for extended periods of time. The bout featured a lot of circling around the cage and the occassional takedown by Bustfield, who basically smothered Durante and controlled him with "Lay and Pray". All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Bustfield and the crowd was restless after this contest. The second bout was only slightly better. Kenny Magilton (8-3) handed Melvin Custard (7-4) his second straight defeat by outpointing him in this Lightweight duel. The judges scored the bout 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27 for Magilton, who took down Custard as well but failed to use his Jiu Jitsu skill to any great effect. Magilton tried multiple submissions, but Custard kept blocking them and the long stretches of inactivity on the ground bored the fans. Business picked up for the third fight of the night in which undefeated prospect Wallace Everret (6-0) continued his meteoric rise in the Featherweight division by clearly outpointing the veteran Anthony Ray Shenkman (14-4) and handing him his second straight defeat. Everett showed a fantastic sprawl, preventing Shenkman from taking the fight to the ground while at the same time using his superior boxing skill to sting, hurt and frustrate his veteran opponent. The fact that Shenkman got only one takedown in 15 tries shows how good Everrett's takedown defense was this night. All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Everret with Shenkman getting only the second round, in which he took down Everret and managed to exert some degree of control. In BLURCAT's Fight of the Night, "The Tropical Tornado" Azor Portela Nunes (22-3, #6 FW) continued his winstreak after knocking out Harvey Ripa (8-4) with a brutal knee inside the Muay Thai clinch at 4:03 of the very 1st Round. Ripa suffered his second consecutive defeat, while Nunes got his third straight win and should be demanding a Featherweight title shot soon. Nunes won BLURCAT's Knockout of the Night award as well. In the Co-Main Event, young prospect Sammy Newton (4-0) outpointed the veteran former GAMMA contender Duane Weatherly (14-9) in a Lightweight contest. The two kickboxers exchanged potent strikes for the entire bout, but Newton was far more effective, rocking Weatherly several times and knocking him to the ground twice, although both times he was unable to finish. The judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 for Newton. The end result hurts XCC's future plans in which they hoped to match the former GAMMA Title contender Weatherly with their current Lightweight champion. The main event was a very average contest in which Jamie Hewitt (9-2) retained his title by clearly outpointing Jackson Gray (17-10). The former GAMMA title contender and standout wrestler was outmatched by Hewitt on every level, losing all five rounds in BLURCAT's card, although the judges gave him a round or two. The final scores where 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 for Hewitt.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: Lermontov Wins SIGMA Lightweight Title, Cabal and Crumb get BIG Wins 510 fans were in attendance for SIGMA: Basora vs Lermontov at the V Power Arena in Munich. The fans were treated to a great card that featured BLURCAT's Fight of the Night in the opener when Nicolai Mieckewicz (20-4, #12 LHW) defeated the veteran and respected trainer Mantas Andreyev (36-12) by Round 2 TKO. The fight was non-stop since the very opening minutes in which both men traded strikes with Mieckewicz getting the advantage. Andreyev decided to engage Nicolai instead of taking the fight to the ground and this proved to be a mistake as he ended the round with a puffy face and a cut under the left eye. Mieckewicz capitalized on the second round, landing more strikes to the left side of Andreyev's face, who clearly had trouble seeing them coming. After a massive hook connected with Andreyev's jaw he fell to the ground and Nicolai pounded him out for the TKO. In the worst fight of the night, Rafael Van Der Moot (8-0) continued his undefeated streak with a Round 2 TKO of Andranik Peletilolu (15-6). The fight started with an awful first round that featured a lot of circling around and barely any action. Van Der Moot came out pushing the pace in Round 2, but Andranik kept backpedalling and refusing to engage. Andranik finally went for the fences and missed a head kick, followed by Van Der Moot catching a leg kick and connecting with a brutal right hook to Andranik's jaw, putting him down. Seeing that his opponent was dazed, Van Der Moot mounted him and pounded on him until the ref called off the bout. This was Peletilolu's second straight defeat. The third fight of the night featured a horrible judges decision in which Tore Hervlovsen (5-0) was given a Split-Decision win over Jaromyr Grygera (17-6, #24 MW) with scores of 29-28 Hervlovsen, 29-28 Grygera and 29-28 Hervlovsen. BLURCAT scored the bout 29-28 for Grygera. Jaromyr controlled most of the fight by taking down Tore and controlling him on the ground, yet somehow the judges felt that Tore was being more active or something and have him the nod. Horrible decision and an early candidate for Robbery of the Year. Grygera now has suffered consecutive losses for the first time in his career. In a major upset, young prospect Christakis Boutzikos (4-0) clearly outpointed the veteran former title contender Alberto Basora (17-8), handing Luis Basora's older brother his second consecutive loss. All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Boutzikos, who clearly lost the first round after Basora took him down and controlled him in the ground, but won the last two rounds with a good sprawl and impressive counterstriking. In a bout of two Top 25 Heavyweights, Terron Cabal (12-0, #23 HW) defeated Stratos Pappaioanou (26-6, #15 HW) by Knockout at 2:46 of Round 2. The first round was pretty even, although Cabal managed to push Stratos into the cage and control him there. Round 2 featured plenty of strike exchanges that ended with Cabal landing a massive uppercut that connected solidly with Papaioannou's jaw and knocked him out cold. The loss snapped Pappaioannou's 4 fight winstreak and makes Cabal a serious contender at the SIGMA Heavyweight Title. In the Co-Main Event, Templeton Crumb (18-3, #10 WW) defeated Viacheslav Chaliapin (6-3) by Round 1 TKO, handing the Russian his second straight loss. The South African boxer used his incredible standup and footwork to confuse Chaliapin and land strikes at will. He knocked him down once with a potent right hook, but Chaliapin was able to get back on his feet. However, Crumb put him down again with a spectacular Liver Shot and then pounced on his opponent until the ref stopped the bout. Incredible win for Crumb as he continues his bid for a title shot. In the Main Event of the evening, Fiyero Lermontov (12-0, #14 LW) became the new SIGMA Lightweight Champion with a Round 3 Knock Out of Luis Basora (19-4, #3 LW, #10 PFP). Lermontov used his potent striking to control the bout from the get go and knocked Basora out cold with a picture perfect roundhouse head kick that I am sure will make waves on YouTube and won Blurcat's KO of the Night Award. Expect Lermontov to move up on the LW Rankings and make his debut in the PFP rankings as well.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Weekly Recap 02/10/1998-02/25/1998 Moura Promises Victory in Undefeated Clash The hype train for FLB: Full Contact is in full swing and FLB Heavyweight Champion Elzo Alves Moura (12-0) visited us earlier this week to hype his title defense against fellow undefeated brawler Gladstone Lopes (12-0-1). Unsurprisingly, Moura promised a victory and he fully believes he will be the one undefeated standing come Saturday. "It is what it is" said Moura. "We are two of the best in the world, probably the best in all of Brazil and we are coming to bang, we are coming to fight, we are coming to deliver. At the end of the day only one of us will be left standing and that one will be me. I am the champion and I am going to prove it." Claremont Promises Tournament Win Brian Claremont also stopped by Blurcat's studio on the same day as Moura to hype the FLB Featherweight Tournament. The man they call "Barrage" for his striking abillity had a few choice words for the rest of the contestants. "They might as well give me the belt and saves themselves the trouble. I am better than Sebastian Nebaco (his first round opponent) and I am better than every other Featherweight in that tournament. They made a double brackett with 16 man in it and the winners of both brackets facing each other. Man, that is just delaying the inevitable and that is me becoming their champ. Might as well give me the belt right now and save the other guys the trouble and save four men from being beat up by me". Results from Around the Globe Boxing Sensation Valdez wins in Monterrey Former Olympic Gold Medalist Boxer Joey Valdez (4-0) continued his MMA career with a Round 1 KO of Gabriel Bustamante in the headlining fight for Campeones MMA in Monterrey, Mexico. Valdez knocked out Bustamante with a beautiful uppercut that caught his opponent flush under the chin. Valdez, one of Mexico's best prospects and considered a future Light Heavyweight Champion by many hopes to attract the attention of the bigger promotions. In the Co-Main Event, Middleweight Esteban Vega (3-0) used his superior wrestling to take down and ground and pound his opponent, Marcelo Martinez en route to a Round 1 TKO win. Vega, who calls himself a "Hybrid Fighter" due to his background in both, amateur wrestling and boxing, got his third straight win under the Campeones MMA banner. Featherweight Arturo Diaz (5-1) returned to the winner's circle after getting a spectacular Round 2 KO of his opponent, Rey Gonzales. Diaz, coming of a loss to fellow Featherweight Bobby Castillo, looked spectacular using his overwhelming barrage of strikes to systematically dismantle Gonzales. Bobby Castillo (3-0) was also active in the card and defeated Manuel Agustin by Round 2 TKO. Castillo caught Agustin with a head kick that sent him down and then mounted him for the ground and pound TKO. The rest of the card is as follows: Welterweight Mauricio de Terreros (2-0) defeated Armando Luciano by Round 2 TKO, Lightweight Rogelio Quesada (3-0) defeated Luis Lopez via Round 2 Kimura Submission, Welterweight Louis De La Torre (4-0) defeated Miguel Perez via Round 3 TKO (Ground and Pound), Lightweight Sebastian Fernandez (4-1) defeated Jose Huertas via Round 1 KO (Uppercut) and Lightweight Gonzalo Ramos (2-0) defeated Junior Aguayo via Round 2 TKO. Karp, Collett Get Wins in UC UK Trash-talking Welterweight prospect Jayden Karp (2-0) outpointed Steve Regal in the main event of the last Ultimate Challenge UK show. All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for the brash and arrogant prospect, better known for his reality TV apperances and his fantastic KO power. Regal's chin withstood Karp's barrages, but never threathened the young star. The Co-Main Event featured former UK Olympic Boxer Nigel Collett (3-0) getting a spectacular TKO win over fellow Lightweight Andy Reid in just one minute of Round 1. Collett dropped Reid with a right hook to the body and followed that up with a spectacular barrage of shots to finish the bout. Recently converted kickboxer Tim Oldacres (2-0) won his second pro MMA bout via Round 2 Head Kick KO of Brian Hart. The Lightweight sensation who used to fight in Thailand as a professional kickboxer made short work of his wrestling-based opponent and proved that he has a good sprawl and takedown defense. The rest of the card's results are as follow: Heavyweight Terry Bull (2-0) defeated Adrian Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision (30-27 ALL), Welterweight Humber Gest (5-2) snapped a two-fight losing streak with a Round 2 TKO win over Landon Anderson, Light Heavyweight Hardy Tristan (2-0) defeated Marcus Augustus via Round 2 TKO, Featherweight Aidan McHugh (3-0) defeated Kirk Bassinger via Round 2 KO (Head Kick), Featherweight Duey Rickert (5-2) outpointed Fred London and Middleweight Augustus Shorrock (3-0) defeated Mark Ingram via Round 1 Submission (Armbar). TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: Sithalayan New BCF Welterweight King 599 fans went to see British Cage Fighting's latest event, BCF: Kane vs Sithalayan at the Bulldog Gym in London. The night started with Top 20 Light Heavyweight Garry McSweegan (21-7, #20 LHW) outpointing veteran George Laurent (36-13) in a contest that was very difficult to score. The first round was a real toss-up as both men had sucessful moments in the stand-up. Round 2 belonged to the veteran Laurent as he took down and controlled McSweegan. The final round was all McSweegan however, as he rocked Laurent with boxing combinations. That seemed to have inspired the judges to score the bout 29-28 ALL for McSweegan. In Blurcat's Fight of the Night, "The Sandman" Rob Baines (27-10) defeated the hard-hitting explosive striker Andrew Rush (13-7) at 3:06 of Round 1 via Triangle Choke. Rush exploded from the get go and managed to rock and knock down Baines with his sucessful striking. Rush even secured the mount, but Baines was able to weather the storm and recover to finish his opponent. Baines will be looking to turn this victory into a Middleweight title shot. David Webb (15-3, #13 WW) obtained his second consecutive win by forcing veteran Steven Griffin (12-6) to tap to an Armbar at 2:48 of Round 2, handing Griffin his second consecutive defeat. Webb, a former BCF Welterweight Champion dominated the entire fight en route to the submission win. Right after the bout was over, Webb stated he wanted to fight the winner of tonight's main event for the title. In the worst fight of the night, Dominick Openheimer (4-0) outpointed journeyman Ignatius Hepfinger (8-6) with the judges scoring the bout 30-27 ALL for Openheimer. Hepfinger spent most of the bout avoiding contact with his opponent, leading to a boring fight. The crowd loudly booed Hepfinger, which led to the BCF President stating that it was "unlikely" that Hepfinger would be back in the promotion. Light Heavyweight Daniel Hornsby (12-3) defeated Murray O'Hare (3-2) by Round 3 TKO in a great, action-packed fight, Both men traded strikes for most of the bout and kept the crowd roaring with their determination to see the other man down. Hornsby eventually won the bout when he ducked under a right hand and came up with a brutal elbow to the face, followed by ground and pound. Hornsby won Blurcat's KO of the Night award for his performance. In the Co-Main Event, Seth O'Breen (13-0, #15 LW) defeated Jeremy Sproule (3-2) in a very boring, technical contest via Round 3 Armbar submission. There was never any doubt as of who the winner was going to be as O'Breen kept the fight on the ground all three rounds and kept trying different submission holds on Sproule, who showed a lot of hard and determination by preventing O'Breen from tapping him out earlier. In the Main Event of the evening, Vikram Sithalayan (17-2, #9 WW) became the new BCF Welterweight Champion with his Round 1 submission victory over Will Kane (14-4, #17 WW). Sithalayan quickly took Kane down and worked his way into an armbar submission in only 2 minutes of the very first round. He won Blurcat's Submission of the Night award and the BCF Welterweight Title in his absolute domination of Kane.
TEWFan
BLURCAT Results: WEFF 4: Summers new Lightweight Champion, Silverman Upsets Epsom 277 fans showed up to watch the Women Extreme Fighting Federation's 4th show in Quebec, Canada. In the first bout of the evening and Blurcat's Fight of the Night, Pamela O'Neill (4-0, #11 BW) defeated Phoebe Bergman (5-3, #21 BW) via Round 3 Guillotine Submission. Excellent contest in which Bergman won the first round by using her superior Kickboxing skills and outstriking the still undefeated prospect. However, Pamela took Phoebe down and controlled her in the second round, managing to lock in an Armbar, but the round ended and saved Bergman from tapping. The third round started with Bergman in control, but Pamela was able to sprawl a takedown and transition into a Guillotine Choke for the win three minutes into the round. Pamela also wins Blurcat's Submission of the Night award. In the second bout Karen Curtis (6-0, #11 WPFP, #5 BW) wrestled her way into a victory over Hazel McClay (4-2, #16 BW) via Unanimous Decision with scores of 29-28,29-28 and 30-27 for Curtis. It was a wrestling clinic from the still undefeated Curtis in which she took down McClay at will and smothered her into the ground. Curtis tried to ground and pound McClay, using McClay's own speciality against her, but was unable to finish the contest. In what was billed a Highway Robbery by the Blurcat staff, Lula Barker (8-3, 21 WPFP, #16 FW) was awarded a controversial split decision over Samantha Sachs (5-1, #8 PFP, #5 FW) with scores of 29-28 Barker, 29-28 Sachs and 30-27 Barker. The Blurcat staff scored it 29-28 for Sachs and there is no way someone could have scored it 30-27 for Barker after Sachs clearly dominated the first round almost finishing the fight with ground and pound and then came back to dominate the third round with takedowns and effective strikes. Barker won the second round by controlling Sachs in the clinch. Horrible decision all around and a reminder that MMA judging needs to improve. In the worst fight of the night, Kelly Andrews (2-0) outpointed Chelsea Lawson (1-1) in a boring fight via Split Decision with scores of 29-28 Andrews, 29-28 Lawson and 29-28 Andrews. Blurcat scored it 29-28 Andrews in a fight with little action and a lot of clinching and hugging. Andrews connected the most effective strikes and had clear control of the clinches most of the fight. In another boring contest, pretty bad for our Co-Main Event, Kerry Silverman (4-1, #20 FW) outpointed Lynda Epsom (4-1, #22 PFP, #16 FW) by Unanimous Decision with scores of 29-28 ALL for Silverman. Silverman showed tremendous improvement in her takedown defense, being able to keep the fight standing against the constant takedown attempts from her wrestling-based opponent. Her counterstriking hurt Epsom, giving her a bloody nose as well and handing Epsom her first career loss. In the Main Event Vicki Summers (6-0, #15 PFP, #6 BW) defeated Michelle Adams (7-1, #6 PFP, #1 BW) via Round 5 TKO to become the new WEFF Lightweight Champion. Summers dominated the whole fight, an exciting fight in which both women stood toe to toe exchanging strikes for the entirety of the bout. Both women where bloody and had puffy faces as we entered the final round when Summers caught Adams flush with a powerful headkick and put her down, followed by ground and pound until the ref stopped the bout 57 seconds into the round. Summers wins the title and the Blurcat KO of the Night award.
