UFC 10 - Brothers In Arms Saturday Week 4 July 1996

http://www.thetechherald.com/media/images/201020/UFC_1.jpg

The First Fight

Joe Son(2-0) Vs Andy Anderson(2-1)

The Match - A very exciting match with some good back and forth stand up it was Andy Anderson who came out on top knocking his opponent down and winning by TKO.

The Result - Andy Anderson wins by TKO strikes in 9.00

The Rating - Great

Tournament Quarter-Finals

Gerard Gordeau(5-6) Vs Don Frye(0-0)

The Match - Don Fryes first match in the UFC was a pretty dull one lasting just under half an hour. Eventually he was too much for the experienced Gordeau using his boxing to floor him and raining down more punches until he was pulled away.

The Result - Don Frye wins by TKO Strikes in 28.53

The Rating - Poor

Emmanuel Yarbrough(0-1) Vs Guy Mezger(2-2)

The Match - After the promising start it was another dull match 30 minutes of fighting was bad to watch. To the surprise of most of the crowd it was Yarbrough put all his weight behind one punch and dropped Mezger before hitting a few more to make sure.

The Result - Emmanuel Yarbrough wins by TKO strikes in 30.19

The Rating - Poor

Carlos Newton(0-0) Vs Dave Beneteau(0-1)

The Match - Newton was impressive in his debut beating Beneteau in less than 5 minutes with a well executed armbar.

The Result - Carlos Newton wins by submission via Armbar in 4.37

The Rating - Decent

Teila Tuli(3-2) Vs Renzo Gracie(4-0)

The Match - Typical Gracie taking on the bigger man but Tuli did put up a good fight but in the end Renzo just like Royce bided his time and eventually submitted the big sumo.

The Result - Renzo Gracie wins by submission via triangle in 25.30

The Rating - Good

Semi-Finals

Don Frye(1-0) Vs Emmanuel Yarbrough(1-1)

The Match - Frye was just too much for the big man and after a failed take down by Yarbrough Frye locked in a guillotine for a quick and easy win.

The Result - Don Frye wins by submission via guillotine in 2.20

The Rating - Great

Carlos Newton(1-0) Vs Renzo Gracie(5-0)

The Match - Another typical Gracie performance waited and waited until the time was right. A boring match for the crowd but it was Renzo who won by Americana.

The Result - Renzo Gracie wins by submission via Americana in 13.29

The Rating - Awful

The Final

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/RenzoGracie.gifhttp://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/DonFrye.gif

The Match - The smart money would have been on a Gracie but this great match was very even until Frye countered a take down attempt with a big right hand. Once on the floor Frye pounced and hit punch after punch until the referee stopped the fight, Frye left Renzo a bloodied mess in the middle of the Octagon.

The Result - Don Frye wins by TKO Strikes in 12.54

The Rating - Great

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/FrankShamrock.gif Vs http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/KazushiSakuraba.gif

The Match - The first of the brothers to fight was Frank Shamrock unfortunately for him Sakuraba was too good, despite Shamrock hitting a few good punches in the early stages he was eventually submitted.

The Result - Kazushi Sakuraba wins by submission via Guillotine in 18.20

The Rating - Average

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/KenShamrock.gif Vs http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/IkuhisaMinowa.gif

The Match - Shamrock restored some family pride with a quick win in the main event. Shamrock took down Minowa and was able to easily take his back and submit him with a rear naked choke.

The Result - Ken Shamrock wins by submission via rear naked choke

The Rating - Decent

Attendance - 815 for a gate of $32,600

Pay-Per-View - 56,000 Buys for revenue of $336,000

UFC 11 - Desert Storm Saturday week 1 September 1996

http://www.thetechherald.com/media/images/201020/UFC_1.jpg

The First Fight

Jon Hess(1-0)(SAFTA) Vs Roberto Lesnar(3-0)(Muay Thai)

The Match - One of the most boring fights the UFC fans have ever witnessed. Lesnar looked like he was going to take the MMA world by the throat after a debut tournament win. That didn't happen and neither man really tried hard for the win but in the end it was "The Giant with Attitude" Jon Hess that was given the victory by the judges.

The Result - Jon Hess wins by unanimous decision

The Rating - Awful

Tournament Quarter-Finals

Igor Zinoviev(4-0)(Sambo) Vs Hector Turner(2-0)(Kick Boxing)

The Match - Zinoviev used his superior wrestling to capture the win in a very exciting bout. Turner is regarded as one of the most exciting fighters in the world and it showed in this great match but he could not topple Zinoviev who inevitably won by submission.

The Result - Igor Zinoviev wins by submission via armber in 10.49

The Rating - Great

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka(7-0)(Judo) Vs Gary Goodridge(0-1)(Kuk Soo Won)

The Match - Kohsaka impressed in this match leaving the crowd very happy and Goodridge continued where he left off. The match was over in less than a minute.

The Result - Tsuyoshi Kohsaka wins by submission via arm triangle in 0.52

The Rating - Good

Jason Delucia(2-2)(Kung Fu) Vs Katsuhija Fuji(0-0)(Wrestling)

The Match - Delucia was unable to do much at all in an uneventful 30 minute match. It was Fuji who managed to grind out a win.

The Result - Katsuhija Fuji wins by submission via Armbar in 33.27

The Rating - Average

Jason Fairn(0-1)(Ju-Jitsu) Vs Mark Coleman(0-0)(Wrestling)

The Match - Mark Coleman fancied by many to do well in the tournament didn't disappoint. It took him awhile to find away past a plucky Jason Fairn but in the end it was Coleman who got his first win.

The Result - Mark Coleman wins by submission via rear naked choke in 16.44

The Rating - Average

Semi-Finals

Igor Zinoviev(5-0) Vs Tsuyoshi Kohsaka(8-0)

The Match - Although a slight underdog it was Tsuyoshi who triumphed in a pretty boring match with little action. He managed to out wrestle Zinoviev and lock him in a guillotine for the win.

The Result - Tsuyoshi Kohsaka wins by submission via Guillotine in 24.06

The Rating - Poor

Mark Coleman(1-0) Vs Katsuhija Fuji(1-0)

The Match - Only the second fight of each mans career but an important one. It was the American that failed to impress and in an awful match he was submitted by Fuji in a decent performance.

The Result - Katsuhija Fuji wins by submission via armbar in 9.32

The Rating - Awful

The Final

Tsuyoshi "TK" Kohsaka(9-0) Vs Katsuhija "Shamiji" Fuji(2-0)

The Match - A good back and forth match with plenty of submission attempts that really showed off the skill of both men however the experience of TK shone through and he was victorious by a tight arm triangle.

The Result - Tsuyoshi Kohsaka wins by submission via arm triangle in 32.53

The Rating - Decent

The Super Fight

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/RoyceGracie.gif Vs http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/DanSevern.gif

Royce Gracie(12-1) faced off once again against "The Beast" Dan Severn(8-1-1). Fans of Severn will be very disappointed with his performance Gracie didn't have to bide his time like usual as Severn made a mistake within the first couple of minutes and the Ju-Jitsu expert pounced for a quick and easy win.

The Result - Winner and still Super fight champion Royce Gracie by submission arm triangle in 1.28

The Rating - Decent

Attendance - 930 for a gate of $37,200

Pay-Per-View - 56,000 Buys for revenue of $336,000

Fight of the Night - Igor Zonviev Vs Hector Turner

KO of the Night - N/A

Submission of the Night - Royce Gracie

UFC 12 - America Versus The World Preview

For the first time the UFC will not be having a tournament and instead will be having a series of matches featuring an American fighter taking on a fighter representing the rest of the world. The Matches are as follows.

America - Thaddeus Luster(0-2)(Freestyle) Vs Brazil - Vitor Belfort(1-0)(Jusitsu and Boxing)

America - Roberto Lesnar(3-1)(Muay Thai) Vs Japan - Kazuo Takahasi(6-5)(PANCRASEism)

America - Frank Shamrock(10-5-1)(Submission Fighting) Vs Japan - Ikuhisa Minowa(0-1)(Catch)

America - Chris Brennan(4-0)(Ju-Jitsu) Vs Japan - Egan Inoue(4-2)(Ju-Jitsu)

America - Carlos Newton(1-1)(Dragonball Ju-Jitsu) Vs Holland - Semmy Schilt(2-0)(Kick Boxing)

America - Tank Abbott(4-4)(Brawling) Vs Brazil - Royler Gracie(2-0)(Gracie Ju-Jitsu)

America - Andy Anderson(3-1)(Freestyle) Vs Japan - Masakatsu Funaki(8-3)(Catch)

Some interesting matches the debut of Belfort the fast punching Brazilian. Newton giving up over a foot in height to the 6 foot 11 Schilt. Tanks brawling skills against another Gracie. Interesting to see if the Muay Thai man Lesnar can get back to winning ways or if his tournament win was just a flash in the pan.

Roberto Lesnar(3-1)(Muay Thai) Vs Kazuo Takahasi(6-5)(PANCRASEism)

UFC 12 - America versus The World Saturday week 1 December 1996

http://www.thetechherald.com/media/images/201020/UFC_1.jpg

Thaddeus Luster(0-2)(Freestyle) Vs Vitor Belfort(1-0)(Ju-Jitsu and Boxing)

The Match - Belfort dominated much of the match but could not KO Luster who eventually managed to lock in a rear naked choke for the win.

The Result - Thaddeus Luster wins by submission via rear naked choke

The Rating - Poor

Roberto Lesnar(3-1)(Muay Thai) Vs Kazuo Takahasi(6-5)(PANCRASEism)

The Match - Lesnar needed a win and he got it in great style. Takahasi dropped his guard for a slight second and the Muay Thai fighter hit a spectacular head kick and his opponent was out before he hit the ground.

The Result - Roberto Lesnar wins by KO Kick in 5.37

The Rating - Good

Frank Shamrock(10-5-1)(Submission Fighting) Vs Ikuhisa Minowa(0-1)(Catch)

The Match - Frank Shamrock stepped out of the shadow of Ken with this brilliant performance as he made short work of Minowa. In a botched takedown attempt Frank managed to get hold of a guillotine to make Minowa tap out.

The Result - Frank Shamrock wins by submission via guillotine choke in 2.23

The Rating - Great

Chris Brennan(4-0)(Ju-Jitsu) Vs Egan Inoue(4-2)(Ju-Jitsu)

The Match - A pretty boring match all round but Brennan will not be bothered as he was the man to grab the win with a tight armbar.

The Result - Chris Brennan wins by submission via Armbar in 19.15

The Rating - Poor

Carlos Newton(1-1)(Dragonball Ju-Jitsu) Vs Semmy Schilt(2-0)(Kick Boxing)

The Match - Despite giving away a foot in height Newton pounced when Schilt made a mistake on the ground and his choke was too much for the big man who had no choice but to tap.

The Result - Carlos Newton wins by submission via guillotine in 2.37

The Rating - Great

Tank Abbott(4-4)(Brawling) Vs Royler Gracie(2-0)(Gracie Ju-Jitsu)

The Match - Gracie was even more impressive than Royce in this fight as the hard hitter Tank was easily beaten in under a minute.

UFC 13 - The Tournament

The tournament is back after not featuring at the last UFC event. We will see the following matches.

Melton Bowen(3-1)(Boxing) Vs Matt Sapp(2-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu)

Earl Eaton(3-2)(Ground and Pound) Vs Oleg Taktarov(10-5)(Sambo)

Rudyard Moncayo(1-1)(Kempo) Vs Robert Lucarelli(0-2)(Brawling)

Bas Rutten(9-3)(Hybrid Fighting) Vs Cal Worsham(2-1)(Tae Kwon Doo)

Some interesting match ups Melton Bowen will be taking on a promising youngster in Matt Sapp who was signed after winning a middleweight title at the Extreme Fighting MMA company. Regarded as one of the best submission fighters in the world his traditional Ju-Jitsu make him a serious contender to take the tournament. Earl Eaton will be hoping his size and power can beat down experienced Oleg Taktarov, hard to call a winner as both men look strong but the more experienced Taktarov will be favourite. Lucarelli and Moncayo face off to try and get into winning way and the final match sees Bas Rutten hoping to perform better and excite the crowd but must be favourite for the whole tournament.

Before all this we will see Dan Severn take on Jon Hess. Since the match was made Hess has taunted the Beast saying his SAFTA is the future of MMA and his out dated wrestling will be his downfall, is it wise to wind up a man such as Dan Severn.

The main event will see tournament winner Don Frye trying to succeed where his friend and training partner Dan Severn couldn't and beat Royce Gracie. Gracie is a huge favourite but Frye has good wrestling and stand up and is very strong.

Quick Picks

Jon Hess(3-0)(SAFTA) Vs Dan Severn(8-2-1)(Wrestling)

1. Melton Bowen(3-1)(Boxing) Vs Matt Sapp(2-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu)

2. Earl Eaton(3-2)(Ground and Pound) Vs Oleg Taktarov(10-5)(Sambo)

3. Rudyard Moncayo(1-1)(Kempo) Vs Robert Lucarelli(0-2)(Brawling)

4. Bas Rutten(9-3)(Hybrid Fighting) Vs Cal Worsham(2-1)(Tae Kwon Doo)

Winner of 1 Vs Winner of 2

Winner of 3 Vs Winner of 4

Overall Winner

Melton Bowen(3-1)(Boxing)

Matt Sapp(2-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu)

UFC 13 - Desert Storm Saturday week 1 February 1997

http://www.thetechherald.com/media/images/201020/UFC_1.jpg

The First Fight

Jon Hess(1-0)(SAFTA) Vs Dan Severn(8-2-1)(Wrestling)

The Match - It took the Beast less than 5 minutes to shut up Jon Hess as he took him down and dominated until Hess gave up his back and was choked out.

The Result - Dan Severn wins by submission via rear naked choke in 4.07

The Rating - Good

Tournament Quarter-Finals

Melton Bowen(3-1)(Boxing) Vs Matt Sapp(2-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu)

The Match - An easy and very impressive win for the debuting Matt Sapp despite being a submission expert he quickly floored Bowen before raining down punch after punch for the win.

The Result - Matt Sapp wins by TKO Strikes in 2.25

The Rating - Great

Earl Eaton(3-2)(Ground and Pound) Vs Oleg Taktarov(10-5)(Sambo)

The Match - Earl Eaton pulled off a big shock when he took out former tournament winner Taktarov in under 2 minutes. Pushing The Russian Bear against the cage and hitting a nasty right upper cut Eaton then proceeded to hit big strike after big strike until the referee stopped the fight.

The Result - Earl Eaton wins by TKO Strikes in 1.39

The Rating - Good

Rudyard Moncayo(1-1)(Kempo) Vs Robert Lucarelli(0-2)(Brawling)

The Match - Lucarelli and Moncayo really went for it in this match but Lucarelli's better conditioning paid off as he started to pick his shot before hitting a huge left hook to KO Moncayo.

The Result - Robert Lucarelli wins by KO punch in 21.17

The Rating - Good

Bas Rutten(9-3)(Hybrid Fighting) Vs Cal Worsham(2-1)(Tae Kwon Doo)

The Rating - Average

Semi-Finals

Earl Eaton(4-2)(Ground and Pound) Vs Matt Sapp(3-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu)

The Match - The two new comers went at it with style in this match some great stand up and some good submission attempts from both men. However it was Sapp that stood out in a messy clinch he took down Eaton before using his submission skills to lock in a tight armbar from which Eaton tapped.

The Result - Matt Sapp wins by submission via Armbar in 7.42

The Rating - Great

Bas Rutten(10-3)(Hybrid Fighting) Vs Robert Lucarelli(1-2)(Brawling)

Matt Sapp(3-0)(Traditional Ju-Jitsu) Vs Bas Rutten(10-3)(Hybrid Fighting)

The Match - Experience did not triumph in a great match. Rutten was on top in the stand up and after some back and forth action and a few failed takedown attempts Rutten finally took down the Ju-Jitsu fighter. This was a mistake as Sapp locked on a triangle choke and Bas had no option but to tap out.

The Result - Matt Sapp wins by submission via arm triangle choke in 13.51

The Rating - Great

The Super Fight

http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/RoyceGracie.gif Vs http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu330/Acidburned/UFC/DonFrye.gif

Gracie's hardest fight and most exciting. It was Frye who dropped Gracie and hammered him with some nasty short elbows that cut open the champion. However Gracie as normal did not panic and a short time later he pounced on a mistake and once more locked in an arm triangle and Frye tapped out.

The Result - Winner and still Super fight champion Royce Gracie by submission arm triangle in 6.23

The Rating - Great

UFC 14 - The Streaks

Named after the main events which will see unbeaten Pat Miletich put his record on the line against striker Pedro Rizzo who will weight a lot more on fight day than Miletich. Also once again unbeaten Tsuyoshi Kohsaka will step into the octagon to face off against Enson Inoue another unbeaten fighter.

The night will kick off with debuting Josh Barnett hoping his wrestling can defeat to big sumo fighter Teila Tuli. Another returning fighter will be Vitor Belfort as he looks to get his first UFC win against Sean Daugherty.

Of course we will also see the tournament once again and the following matches will be taking place.

Randy Couture(1-0)(Greco-Roman Wrestling) Vs Tank Abbott(4-5)(Brawling)

Frank Shamrock(11-5-1)(Submission Fighting Vs Troy Grove(0-0)(Ground and Pound)

Paul Varelans(3-1)(Trap Fighting) Vs Chris Brennan(6-1)(Jiu-Jitsu)

Andy Anderson(4-1)(Free Style) Vs Royler Gracie(3-0)(Gracie Jiu-Jitsu)

Some good matches with Gracie and the inexperienced Randy Couture being touted as favourites. It will be interesting to see if Coutures wrestling can out do the classic striking of Tank Abbott who needs a win. Frank Shamrock will be hoping that Troy Grove cannot take him down but with his submission skills he may be happy to fight from his back. Chris Brennan will look to impress again by tapping out the much bigger competitor in trap fighting Paul Varelans. Also will Gracie Jiu-Jitsu see Royler take the tournament crown against a good all round fighter in Andy Anderson.

Quick Picks

Vitor Belfort(1-1)(Boxing/Jiu-Jitsu) Vs Sean Daugherty(1-2)(Karate)
