OctoberRaven Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 My netbook's screen has a resolution of 1028 x 600. Normally this would mean any GDS games I play would not possibly fit on my netbook as they need a 1028 x 724 resolution, right? Well, turns out with a netbook with Windows 7 with Intel graphics engine, you can trick your computer into thinking it has a 1028 x 724 screen, meaning GDS games will fit completely on your screen! I kid you not, this WORKS. And I did it without installing any programs or ware in any way. See, Windows 7 for netbooks has two resolutions higher than 1028 x 600 locked via the registry. So, normally, you cannot access them because they are designed for full-screen computers. But you can go in the registry and unlock them! Here's how: Run regedit, hit find, and c&p this: Display1_DownScalingSupported Hit find next, change the value from 0 to 1. Now use F3 to find next again, changing the value to 0 to 1 Repeat until all values you find are all set to 1. Now reboot. If you did it right, you should now have access to two new resolutions, and they WILL work. The one side effect is that text will be a liiiiittle bit wider, but you'll get used to it. WARNING: Don't just play around with the registry to experiment with it. There are times, like this, where altering the registry can be useful. But just like cutting a pufferfish for sushi, if you don't know what you're doing you can have a very bad day. This method IS safe if you do EXACTLY as I say, but I can't guarantee anything if you try something else. EDITED- Might not work on Acer models 521 and later, because they don't use Intel graphics.
THE_ONE Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I'm shocked this hasn't gotten more attention here I know I've been looking at buying a netbook but with the screen res on them so low that I couldn't run GDS games I have passed. Now I have an excuse to go buy a new toy hehe <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
Genadi Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Buying an IPad soon before I head to the States for a trip, can you play on an IPad? If not I'm seriously considering buying a netbook instead. I have no clue about this stuff and that little tutorial you gave is awesome!

So you can use your Ipad to connect to your computer to play it, but its not really playing them on your Ipad.</p><p> </p><p> And of course that would mean having to leave your computer on.</p><p> </p><p> So yes it can be done, but your probably better off getting a netbook.</p>
praguepride Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Buying an IPad soon before I head to the States for a trip, can you play on an IPad? If not I'm seriously considering buying a netbook instead. I have no clue about this stuff and that little tutorial you gave is awesome! I do not have an iPad so I can't speak specifically to it, but there are two main considerations to take into account: 1) iPad is a Mac platform, GDS games run exclusively on Windows. Solution: There are discussions about using software to emulate Windows OS for the purposes of running software. You would have to see if this emulation software can run (and run reasonably well) on the iPad. 2) Screen Resolution: Most GDS games require 1024x768 minimum screen size as the screens are not dynamic (i.e. they can't be resized to grow or shrink). If the iPad can support a resolution of at least that size, then you wouldn't have problems on that end. If it doesn't natively support that, there are probably advanced settings or software you can download to get higher resolutions, but proceed with caution.
ThexEffect Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Dont know if im much use here, but i play on a netbook aswell. theres a way if you right click properties and change the size from there. theres a trick to do it, I googed on some netbook website how to increase the scream a ton more and found some info on a site.. try google.
OctoberRaven Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 That's actually where I got the info from.
ThexEffect Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 That's actually where I got the info from. haha sweet! Thats what most net book users should do! : )
praguepride Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 FYI I spoke with a friend who has an iPad and he said that the iPad doesn't run true Mac OS so traditional WINE may or may not work with it. It runs the same (or similar) OS as the iPhone, so theoretically if you can get it running on an iPad, you could mod your iPhone to run TEW as well (just with horrendous screen size, but /meh, it's mobile TEW ) I'm asking my MAC buddy to look into it for my own selfish purposes and with the promise of cake at the end (which of course doesn't exist).
crayon Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 I'm asking my MAC buddy to look into it for my own selfish purposes and with the promise of cake at the end (which of course doesn't exist). Are you implying that the cake is some form of dastardly ruse?
ShaunGBD Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Are you implying that the cake is some form of dastardly ruse? I heard cake and I came, but I have nothing to offer to this topic. I want cake!!
1234 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Just a bump for this, as it's an incredibly useful thread. I just used this on my netbook so I could play CBH. When I first say the changes in the stretched screen I thought I would be unable to bear it, however once I got into the game it looks normal. And even better, it effectively operates in full screen mode. Thank you OctoberRaven.
praguepride Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 So, in order to get TEW on an ipad, you would have to hack your iOS to allow you to install other core software, namely WINE. Then you would have to continually tinker with WINE in order to get the iOS to emulate Mac OS to emulate a Windows environment (probably XP, it'd be easiest to run). The OTHER way you can do it is you can use remote desktop to remote into a computer that has windows & TEW/WMMA/CBH on it. It's not quite the same but if you have an internet connection where you're going, it still might work out for you: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/remote-desktop-lite-rdp/id288362576?mt=8

I used to play TEW on my JB'ed iPod Touch, and JB'ed iPhone 3G all the time.
Macca316 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 <p>OctoberRaven you are a god, just bought a net book and saw my heart sink when i was told by TEW i couldn't Play tew. </p><p> </p><p> cheers</p>
