Fight League Brazil - South American Reformation!

Recommended Posts

Posted
Game start date: January 1998 (Default data + expansion)

Promotion: Fight League Brazil (FLB)

Popularity: Regional 25% South America

Rules:

Weight classes: lightweight – heavyweight (5 classes)

Time Limit: 3x5min, 5x5min for championships

Decision: 10-point must

Regulations: Vale Tudo (anything goes)

So I didn't get an extraordinary special idea for a dynasty, but I decided to make one of FLB, the only new promotion in the WMMA 3 game and also one of the more interesting. I'll be doing it quite normally for now, but be prepared for some twists along the way as I come up with some!

Nothing out of the ordinary, but hopefully the quality of my dynasty will keep you reading. I tried to pick a dynasty that would keep me interested as well to see how it plays out, so I can keep up a good pace in writing out shows, and FLB has been one promotion I’ve been wanting to run with for a long time. With no other FLB dynasties around as of now, I think it’ll be interesting enough to follow.

FLB announce changes in management

Fight League Brazil (FLB) recently announced the addition of a new man behind the scenes for the Brazilian-based Vale Tudo promotion – Javier Souza, the former match-maker and promoter for several Brazilian regional circuit shows, as well as the manager for many Brazilian notables, including Ricardo Fernandes and Elgar.

What this change will mean for the promotion, though? Souza stated in an interview that it would be business as usual, apart from more active work on the talent-seeking front, as well as trying to put on the most exciting fights and fight cards as often as possible. The first new signing would be announced later on, as the details of the deals were still being ironed out.

FLB announce additions to roster

FLB announce additions to roster

Fight League Brazil matchmaker and talentseeker Javier Souza announced early this morning (Monday Week 2 January) some of the new talent officially added to the FLB roster. Souza noted that most of the new fighters were Brazilian or based in South America, so that 'FLB wouldn't need to go through Visa issues and paying flight tickets'. Some of the most notable pickups below:

Manoel Cabral (3-0 MMA), Lightweight

The 23-year old jiu-jitsu black belt Cabral is one of the brightest lightweight MMA prospects coming out of Brazil. With some more experience and training in striking and wrestling, he could become a huge player in FLB’s 155-pound class.

Nilton Fantoni (4-0 MMA), Light Heavyweight

Yet another jiu-jitsu black belt, Nilton Fantoni also complements his undeniable ground ability with excellent wrestling, making it easy for him to take his opponents down. Being from an athletic family, and having his background in grappling, Fantoni will surely become a factor in the title picture at 205 pounds.

Julio Correa (6-0 MMA), Heavyweight

A 23-year old new generation striker, Correa not only possesses good boxing and power, he knows how to defend himself against the other aspects of mixed martial arts. With a lot of time to improve, the 6-0 Brazilian might become a real contender in a couple of years.

Marcos Maciel (4-0 MMA), Light Heavyweight

One of Brazil’s most successful young kickboxers, Maciel has some of the best technical striking in MMA as a whole, and possesses fight ending power as well. At 27 years old, he is a great prospect for the future.

Ramon da Silva Ramos (3-0 MMA), Middleweight

One of the hotter prospects out of Brazil, Ramon is a highly skilled kickboxer who is also very hard to take down and finish on the ground. With further grappling experience, he could become a legend in Brazilian MMA.

At least 15 other new signings were announced, and they can most surely be followed on FLB’s upcoming shows.

FLB 7 Official fight card announced!

It was revealed today that Fight League Brazil’s next show, FLB 7 would take place on Saturday, January Week 4 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The promotion’s new matchmaker Javier Souza also released the official fight card for the media, and it is below:

FLB Light Heavyweight Championship:

(Champion) Affonso Villar (22-2) vs. Roberto Aldez (42-11)

The clash of two devastating muay thai strikers was to be expected as Villar knocked the title out of Elgar’s hands last February, since successfully defending it once, and as ‘The Sniper’ Aldez scored an impressive victory in December. It will be the youth and explosive power of Villar versus the experience and precision of Aldez, who is 11 years the elder of the two.

Heavyweight Bout:

Murilo Satinho (7-0) vs. Raimundo Pinheiro (7-2)

The golden prospect Satinho, tipped by many as the future of heavyweight vale tudo, will be facing his toughest test to date in Pinheiro, a skilled kickboxer, who is considered a relatively small heavyweight. His size, or lack thereof, could however give him the much needed advantage in speed and agility, although ‘Grande Urso’ also moves very well for a man of his size.

Welterweight Bout:

Lucas (24-7) vs Teco (14-4)

The traditional striker versus grappler match-up, where Lucas will most likely be enjoying the weight and strength advantage, while Teco will look to stick and move and sting Lucas with kicks and punches. Teco will also be at an advantage the longer the fight goes, as Lucas has been known to gas quite a bit.

Middleweight Bout:

Vivinho (6-1) vs Eriverton Laurentino (8-1)

The battle of two young strikers, this fight has the makings for creating the excitement factor for the night. Both men are known for trading kicks and punches, so the fight should make the crowd happy.

Lightweight Bout:

Anderson Desailly (4-0) vs Grande Silveira (4-0)

Another striker versus grappler match-up, where both guys are known for giving their all and putting on exciting fights. The fact that the fight might turn in a blink of an eye with the advantages and disadvantages both men have, it should be a great way to open up the night.

Quick Picks:

Affonso Villar vs Roberto Aldez – by KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Murilo Satinho vs Raimundo Pinheiro – by KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Lucas vs Teco – by KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Vivinho vs Eriverton Laurentino – by KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Anderson Desailly vs Grande Silveira – by KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Also, I will be awarding extra points for picking the right METHOD, as well as the Of the Night-bonuses. Two points for the correct winner, and one point for methods and awards each.

That means the maximum points for this show will be 18. The winner of a show prediction will gain one point in the all-time standings.

Blurcat.com interviewer Carl Roughton recently interviewed the two men involved in the main event of the upcoming FLB 7 – Villar vs Aldez. Here is a written recap of what was said during the radio interview between the champion and the challenger.

Both Villar and Aldez’s responses are through their respective translators.

CR: Thanks so much for joining me here, Affonso, Roberto. I really appreciate the time. First thing I’d like to ask is how is it different to fight in FLB compared to the other Brazilian promotions you’ve fought for?

RA: With FLB everything comes quicker. The opponent you’re facing, the date and location, the paycheck (laughs). The atmosphere is more professional.

AV: It’s the best place to fight in Brazil, although in the end it doesn’t matter much who I fight for, I’m here just for the fight.

CR: Right, I’ve also heard a lot of good things about FLB, it seems you have some really talented fighters in there. A question for the champ first, and then you can answer it too, Roberto. How would you envision the fight playing out this month?

AV: I can knock out anybody I connect with. Roberto is no different, he will go down. In the first round.

RA: If he thinks he’s going to walk through me, he’s badly mistaken. I was involved with the sport when he had no clue what fighting meant. He’s just a rookie, and I’m going to teach him that.

CR: All right, you both seem very confident, as it should be. Do you have anything to say to Roberto’s comment, Affonso?

AV: I prefer to do my talking with my fists and feet. I have 24 fights, and I’ve won all but two. We’ll see in the ring.

CR: Hold on a second, aren’t you two from the same camp? Brazilian Estrela Academy?

RA: (laughs) Yeah, I think we’ll meet before we step into the ring as well. I was only kidding, Villar is a phenomenal fighter, and I hope we’ll put on an exciting fight come fight night.

AV: Yes, but we aren’t sparring together for this fight. I have huge respect for Roberto, he’s like my older brother in the gym, and we’ll be friends after our fight for sure.

CR: Oh, you guys got me good! Good luck with your last practices, hopefully you’ll get to the ring as close to 100% as you can. Thanks a lot for your time!

RA & AV: No problem.

Blurcat.com’s Tom Bradburn recently interviewed FLB executive and matchmaker Javier Souza in the company’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro about FLB’s future plans after FLB 7 – Villar vs Aldez, and Souza seemed happy to show off a detailed schedule of FLB’s future plans with shows targeted until May. Tonight is the night for another Fight League Brazil’s action-packed night of no holds barred combat! The arena in Sao Paulo is buzzing, as the headliner has drawn a record crowd to see whether it is the old school or the new school that will prevail and take the title of the best Brazilian light heavyweight home.

Every fighter is on weight, the crowd is in their seats, and we’re ready to start off the night in the lightweight division without further ado.

Anderson Desailly (4-0) vs Grande Silveira (4-0)

Round 1

Desailly opens up with a nasty leg kick on Silveira, trying to slow down the potential takedown attemps. Desailly feints and circles, looking for some more kicks but Silveira avoids it and shoots, but gets shrugged off. The two men exchange punches in the center ring and end up clinched, from which position Silveira works Desailly to the ground. Easily passing the guard into side control, Silveira seems to be working for an arm triangle choke.. It’s deep in! Will he tap, or is he planning to go asleep? No, he breaks free! Desailly tries to sweep Silveira, but only manages to give up his back trying to escape. Desailly manages to fight Silveira’s hands for a while, but he has the choke in..! The round ends just in time, saving Desailly.

Round 2

The fighters exchange a little, with Desailly landing the most significant strike in a body kick. He follows it up with a combination of punches, and Silveira doesn’t seem to like it, looking for a takedown. Desailly easily stuffs it and lands some more punches. Yet another takedown attempt gets shrugged off, and Desailly almost catches Silveira with an enormous right hand. Silveira eventually gets Desailly to the ground, and lands some small punches from the guard. The round ends with Silveira on top, but he didn’t really do much damage.

Round 3

Desailly lands with a body kick right off the bat, but Silveira shoots right in and gets a takedown, passing into side control within seconds. He works for the arm triangle again, and this time it seems Desailly has nowhere to go… he taps reluctantly, and the referee goes to separate it!

The winner by Submission (Arm Triangle Choke): Grande Silveira!

Silveira improves to 5-0, Desailly falls to 4-1.

Moving on to the Middleweight bout:

Vivinho (6-1) vs Eriverton Laurentino (8-1)

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/6307/vivinho.gif http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/3880/erivertonlaurentino.gif

Round 1

Laurentino slips a measuring jab and counters with a leg kick, battering the left thigh of Vivinho. Another kick is countered by Vivinho by a clean jab. Vivinho uses his slight reach advantage to land a combination of straight punches from a distance, and Laurentino moves closer into the pocket. Vivinho slips some punches and counters with a right hand to the body and a left hook to the head, frustrating Laurentino. Vivinho lands a jab moving backwards, and Laurentino finally lands a cross, but is countered by several punches from Vivinho. Vivinho accurately lands several punches in combinations, peppering the face of Eriverton, and letting out the gas via crunching body shots. Laurentino misses a jab, and Vivinho counters with a huge right straight down the pipe, knocking him down! Vivinho goes to follow up, but gets trapped in half guard and the round ends, possibly saving Laurentino. Very dominant by Vivinho.

Round 2

Laurentino opens up with a head kick, but Vivinho avoids it and counters with a combination that makes him stumble and fall down! Vivinho rushes after him and starts throwing down a barrage of missile-like punches that leave the referee no choice but to step in, Laurentino was getting destroyed!

The winner by TKO (Punches): Vivinho!

Vivinho improves to 7-1, Laurentino falls to 8-2.

Lucas (24-7) vs Teco (14-4)

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9582/lucasc.gif http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/1853/teco.gif

Round 1

Teco is having trouble finding his range, as Lucas rushes in with a barrage of big punches. Teco does well avoiding damage, but it was just a setup as Lucas catches a body kick and takes Teco down! Lucas throws some strikes, but is mostly content controlling his opponent, and the referee eventually stands them up. Lucas shoots for another takedown, but Teco is able to recover his footing, although he does get pushed up against the ropes. The round ends in favor of Lucas, but he already seems to be tiring.

Round 2

The fighters exchange, and Teco finally finds some success, landing some accurate jabs that sting Lucas. Lucas lands a powerful jab that rocks the head of Teco back, and shoots a double leg behind it, but Teco circles out and lands a right hook that catches Lucas flush, knocking him down! He’s out! Impressive performance and great job taking advantage of Lucas’ weak gas tank.

The winner by KO (Punch): Teco!

Teco improves to 15-4, Lucas falls to 24-8.

Murilo Satinho (7-0) vs Raimundo Pinheiro (7-2)

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/9751/murilosatinho.gif http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/230/raimundopinheiro.gif

Round 1

The fighters exchange tentatively, and Satinho grabs Pinheiro in a clinch. He tries to take Pinheiro to the ground, but is having some trouble – suddenly he lifts Pinheiro high up in the air and slams him down! The Great Bear quickly advances into mount and rotates into an armbar! Pinheiro was waiting for it though, and rolls out of it into side control and stands back up! Satinho goes for some setting up strikes and shoots for a double leg, and gets Pinheiro to the ground again, but the round ends before anything significant can happen.

Round 2

Three toe-to-toe exchanges result in no significant hits, and Pinheiro seems keen to keep some distance. Satinho steps in and lands a powerful leg kick, which becomes the only significant strike of the round. The fighters seem to negate each other on the feet. Boos echo around the arena.

Round 3

Satinho scores with a jab right off the bat, and follows it up with another jab and a cross, snapping Pinheiro’s head back. He shoots and takes Pinheiro to the ground. Satinho throws some smashing elbows and punches from inside the guard, and Pinheiro is struggling to cope! Satinho seems winded, but still keeps on a steady barrage of punches and elbows from the top position, Pinheiro is getting bloodied up. The referee separates them with just 27 seconds on the clock, and Pinheiro only manages to land a body punch before the round ends.

The judges score the fight 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27 for the winner by Unanimous decision: Murilo Satinho!

Satinho advances to 8-0, Pinheiro falls to 7-3.

Light Heavyweight Championship

Affonso Villar (22-2) vs Roberto Aldez (42-11)

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/2668/flb.jpg

Round 1

Villar quickly leaps in with a combination of punches, but Aldez avoids them. The champion lands a powerful right hook to the ribcage, and slips past a jab, countering with a jab of his own. He avoids another punch by ducking under it and counters with a body kick, followed up by one of the vicious leg kicks the champ is known for. Aldez seems to want to close the distance, but Villar stays back and cracks him with a big right hand! Aldez fails to land a jab and eats a kick to the side of the carcass, as Villar steps in. The round comes to and end in favor of the champion Villar.

Round 2

Aldez avoids a combination of punches and a body kick. Villar seems to be looking for the clinch, but Aldez circles away. Aldez misses with two body shots, but lands the third to the side of the ribs. Villar is stalking, and he lands a nasty kick to the inside thigh of Aldez.. oh, it seemed to hit something else – Aldez is down clutching his groin! The referee gives him time to recover, and we recommence with just under a minute left in the round. Aldez tries to close the distance, but Villar ducks down and hits a big right hook that floors Aldez! Not in a hurry, Villar stays upright and kicks the challenger’s already bruised legs. Villar quickly dives down, and manages to get side control over Aldez. He ends the round on top.

Round 3

Villar opens up in his usual aggressive manner, but gets caught with a counter left hand from ‘The Sniper’. The champion seems to be tiring down, and that might be due to all the muscle mass he’s carrying around. The fighters exchange up close, but neither lands anything big. Aldez goes for a body kick, but Villar steps in and lands two big right hands! Aldez goes to the other side with a leg kick, but Villar checks it and counters with a lightning-quick right hand that knocks Aldez out of his senses!

Winner by KO (Punch), and still the FLB Light Heavyweight Champion: Affonso Villar!

Villar improves to 23-2, Aldez falls to 42-12.

Great success for my first event with FLB, only one fight went the distance and most of the fights were very exciting indeed. Villar seems in form in this game, and will most likely next face former champ Elgar or the winner of Sousa / dos Santos fight I have planned for my next event. Aldez will need to go back to the drawing board and rack up some wins if he wants a rematch, Villar was very dominant throughout the fight.

Murilo Satinho wasn’t as impressive as I expected him to be, but he got the victory nonetheless. Perhaps two more victories and he might be fighting for the title. Vivinho, on the other hand showed that he’s on another level than Eriverton Laurentino, completely outclassing him and winning via devastating TKO. He’s probably up the rankings now, and I’m looking forward to making an exciting match with him involved!

FLB 8 Official fight card announced!

It was revealed today that Fight League Brazil’s next show, FLB 8 would take place on Saturday, February Week 2 in Rio de Janeiro. Javier Souza released the official fight card for the media, and it is below:

Welterweight Championship:

(Champion) Manuel Silva (13-0) vs. Claudio Palacios (22-6)

The young prodigy’s toughest test to date for several reasons: Palacios is by far the most well rounded fighter he’s faced, plus it’s the 25-year old’s first title defense. How will Silva deal with the pressure of the usual great expectations, as well as defending his championship? On paper, Silva should have the edge on the feet and on the ground, being a muay thai champion as well as a brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, but Palacios is as tough as they come, and can mix it up well.

Light Heavyweight Bout:

Carlos dos Santos (13-3) vs. Pedro Sousa (19-3)

A probable candidate for the next challenger to Affonso Villar’s crown is the winner of this fight, so there is a lot at stake. After Elgar these two are ranked highest in the FLB 205-pound division. Sousa is probably the better, more versatile striker, while dos Santos has the better grappling game of the two.

Middleweight Bout:

Jorge Hormazabal (20-9) vs. Vagner (13-5)

A battle of two upper mid-tier middleweights, this fight might elevate one into the upper echelon, and drop the other into the lower tier. Hormazabal will most definitely look to take it to the ground, while Vagner will want to use his unorthodox striking attack, mixing punches with leg kicks to hinder the takedown attempts.

Heavyweight Bout:

Leo Carlos Goulart (3-1) vs. Tiago de Paixao (9-5)

Two big heavyweight brawlers face in a fight that could be entertaining if their gas tanks hold up. The winner most likely doesn’t have a solid claim for a title shot, but will remain relevant near the middle of the relatively shallow heavyweight division.

Lightweight Bout:

Dalmo Pedrosa (6-4) vs Tarcisio Dantas (2-0)

The golden prospect Tarcisio Dantas makes his debut against street brawler Dalmo Pedrosa, who will no doubt be trying to keep the fight on the feet. Dantas has the significant advantage in the ground and wrestling departments, and is also the bigger, stronger lightweight. Pedrosa’s brawling style and power will be his keys to victory.

Quick Picks:

Manuel Silva vs Claudio Palacios – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Carlos dos Santos vs Pedro Sousa – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Jorge Hormazabal vs Vagner – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Leo Carlos Goulart vs Tiago de Paixao – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Dalmo Pedrosa vs Tarcisio Dantas – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

FLB 8 – Silva vs Palacios Preview Show

Saturday of week 2 in February should be an exciting night of Vale Tudo style combat, as 25-year old Brazilian sensation Manuel Silva (13-0) takes on the Peruvian punisher Claudio Palacios (22-6) to try and defend his title for the first time. There is a mantra that a champion has only truly proven his worth after defending his spot as the champion, and that is the place Silva is in right now. With staggering natural talent and extensive martial arts background, Silva could go down as one of the best ever, but the question is can he deliver under pressure? We’ll certainly find out.

The main event isn’t the only interesting bout on the card. In fact, all of the five fights announced provide interesting potential in terms of excitement value and future matches. The co-main event between Carlos dos Santos and Pedro Sousa will most likely determine a future contender for Affonso Villar’s 205-pound title, which will only add to the pressure the two men bear.

Also on the card is a pivotal middleweight match up with veteran Jorge Hormazabal going head to head against Vagner, the 13-5 kickboxer known for his unorthodox strikes. This match up is intriguing especially since both of the fighters find themselves in a gray area between the lower tier of middleweights in FLB and the true contenders, with the winner of this bout most likely making the leap toward the latter.

Detailed breakdown:

Manuel Silva vs Claudio Palacios

The main event fight could boil down to which fighter comes in more focused and with a better game plan. Manuel Silva should enjoy the advantage on the feet, as he is a national champion in muay thai, and he also holds a black belt in BJJ, so Palacios won’t have an easy time anywhere in this fight. The challenger isn’t particularly exceptional in any one area, but if you had to draw out one thing he does extremely well is chokes. Silva isn’t easy to take down by any means, and he is excellent on the ground as well, but Palacious could find an advantage on top or up against the ropes, if he could grind Silva down and tire him out.

Another thing Palacios seems to excel at is figuring out gameplans to beat his opponents. He often makes his opponents look like amateurs at an area they are the weakest, rather than risking it fighting strength with strength. However, the champion has no real weaknesses that you could point out, so Palacios is going to have a tougher time, and will have to bring his full arsenal to do well.

Keys to win: Silva

Strikes from a distance, defensive wrestling, active guard game

Keys to win: Palacios

Clinch control, top control, pressure

Carlos dos Santos vs Pedro Sousa

Before Silva’s title is put on the line, another title in the future will most likely have a contender in the winner of the fight between dos Santos and Sousa. Both men have had a long, consistent stay near the top of the FLB light heavyweight division, and their paths were destined to cross. Sousa is one of the most aggressive, vicious fighters to step into the FLB ring with devastating kicks in his arsenal. At just 26 years of age, he already has 22 professional fights, and will be looking to bring all the advantages he can to the fight.

Dos Santos is from a wrestling background, but has added solid all-round skills to his game. He has proficient boxing, which he will no doubt use to try and set up other things to gain an advantage over ‘Homicide’ Sousa. If you had to point out a definite strength in dos Santos’ game, it would be his slick takedowns and ground control. If he can take Sousa down, he might be able to finish him, but at least he should be able to pick up the decision win.

The 19-3 Pedro Sousa is the more versatile of the two in terms of strikes. He mixes up kicks, punches, knees and elbows to create a fast-moving threat on the feet. His takedown defense has been suspect in previous fights, but he has only lost three times in 22 fights, so not many people even get that far. Sousa’s best bet is to establish the jab, find openings for big crosses, hooks and kicks to try and finish dos Santos, whose muay thai is not on the level of Sousa.

Keys to win: Sousa

Distance, jab, kicks

Keys to win: dos Santos

Closing the distance, clinch, takedowns

Jorge Hormazabal vs Vagner

The two middleweights fighting for a spot near the top of the division, Vagner and Hormazabal couldn’t have more different styles. Hormazabal is a Chilean BJJ black belt who likes to tap his opponents out with his quick and deadly armlocks, while Vagner is a tricky, unorthodox kickboxer who takes crazy chances to try and excite the crowd.

Vagner has showcased decent takedown defense when needed, and Hormazabal doesn’t have a wrestling background, so it’s going to be interesting to see where the fight will be contested. Vagner is the superior striker in all facets, but Hormazabal could end the fight very quickly if it hits the mat. Because of that, it would be intelligent for Hormazabal to even try and pull guard if the takedown wasn’t there. For Vagner, using his advantage in striking will be crucial, but he’ll also have to avoid becoming too reckless, or he might get his limb caught in something unpleasant.

Keys to win: Hormazabal

Takedowns / pulling guard, control

Keys to win: Vagner

Takedown defense, patience, punches before kicks

Leo Carlos Goulart vs Tiago de Paixao

The fight between heavyweight brawlers Paixao and Goulart will most likely not involve much finesse or technique. The two are very similar in style – powerful brawlers, but not very technically sound punchers. Paixao has the length advantage, but Goulart is the shorter, stockier fighter, which he could turn into an advantage if he took Paixao down or engaged in the clinch. Most likely though, the two will just slug it out in the center of the ring.

Keys to win: Goulart

Not getting knocked out, getting the knock out

Keys to win: Paixao

The same

Tarcisio Dantas vs Dalmo Pedrosa

Most fights between a powerful wrestler and a street fighter are easy to predict – the street fighter gets tossed on his head and pounded into oblivion. That is a likely outcome between the 6-4 Pedrosa, a self-admitted street brawler, and Tarcisio Dantas, one of the more promising lightweight prospects. Dantas is a humongous lightweight that could probably toss around some middleweights, and has a strong wrestling background. Pedrosa has power in his right hand, and can endure a beatdown. If he could keep the fight on the feet, he’d have a chance.

Keys to win: Dantas

Double leg takedown, control, ground & pound

Keys to win: Pedrosa

Takedown defense, power punches

Hopefully you guys enjoy the dynasty, and if you do, I'd hope you comment - you don't necessarily have to pick, although I've found that is kind of the point and the interaction in dynasties. It'd just be nice to hear whether I should continue writing or not, you can also come out and say my dynasty sucks if you wish, then I won't bother writing up more stuff :).

I encourage you to keep going, it's good so far, will make my predictions later. Unfortunately, WMMA diaries don't have a quarter of the amount of readers as TEW diaries. Which is a shame because in my opinion this game is just as good if not better.

Thank you for your kind words, I already have played the game a bit further and made a couple of shows, I'll have FLB 8 up tonight if there's enough interest - at the latest I'll post it tomorrow.

Manuel Silva vs Claudio Palacios – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Take your pick here, really. I reckon Silva is a far superior fighter and will probably win by strikes.

Carlos dos Santos vs Pedro Sousa – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

CDS to take advantage of Sousa's weakness against grapplers and take a decision win.

Jorge Hormazabal vs Vagner – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

I like Hormazabal's chances of matches Vagner in the striking than Vagner matching Jorge on the ground.

Leo Carlos Goulart vs Tiago de Paixao – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Haha definite FOTN material. Neither are very good against well-rounded fighters but neither is well-rounded, so I'll say Goulart by TKO.

Dalmo Pedrosa vs Tarcisio Dantas – By KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Warm-up bout for Dantas here and he should run through Pedrosa.

FLB 8 – Silva vs Palacios Recap

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/2668/flb.jpg

It’s fight night again in Rio de Janeiro, as FLB 8 – Silva vs Palacios is getting set to begin. All the fighters successfully made weight, and it’s time to open up the night in the lightweight division.

Tarcisio Dantas (2-0) vs Dalmo Pedrosa (6-4)

Round 1

The fight opens up surprisingly, as Dantas looks happy to exchange, and seems to be getting the better of the few opening exchanges. He shoots for a takedown, but Pedrosa impressively shrugs it off. He gets stuffed on another double leg attempt, but doesn’t look worried, as he lands good punches and avoids most of Pedrosa’s attacks. The round ends surprisingly with no takedowns scored, but Dantas probably outlanded Pedrosa.

Round 2

Dantas scores with two good combinations back to back, but doesn’t get the takedown that he wants. Instead, he stings Pedrosa with some more quick punches. Pedrosa is swinging hard but doesn’t seem to find the target. Overcommitting, Pedrosa gets taken down via powerful double leg that draws cheers from the crowd. Trying in vain to control the powerhouse Dantas, Pedrosa has to give up side control. Dantas lands some strikes and goes for an arm triangle choke at the end of the round, but can’t finish it, credit to Pedrosa’s toughness.

Round 3

Both men land good punches to open the round, with Pedrosa finally seeming to find his range – and he gets taken down right when he does. Dantas keeps Pedrosa on the mat for the rest of the round, landing some punches and elbows and passing the guard at the end.

All three judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner by Unanimous decision: Tarcisio Dantas!

Dantas improves to 3-0, Pedrosa falls to 6-5.

Key statistics: Dantas outlanded Pedrosa on the feet an impressive 24 to 4. All strikes thrown were punches, and Dantas also landed 2 out of 5 takedown attempts, and fully passed guard twice, landing 5 ground strikes.

Leo Carlos Goulart (3-1) vs Tiago da Paixao (9-5)

Round 1

The fighters start exchanging right away, keeping their guards up and absorbing most punches. Goulart is the first to land cleanly, but Paixao quickly counters with a right hand. Both men are mostly throwing single punches instead of combinations. Paixao takes advantage of his length and reach, circling out and landing jabs. Set up by a jab, he throws a good cross that seems to hurt Goulart. Goulart throws a haymaker, but Paixao dodges it and counters with several big punches that knock Goulart down! Paixao dives in and starts unloading with strikes from side control, and Goulart seems unable to do anything about it! The referee stops the fight!

Winner by TKO (Punches): Tiago da Paixao!

Paixao improves to 10-5, Goulart falls to 3-2.

Key statistics: Paixao outlanded Goulart 10 to 4 on the feet, as well as landing 6 significant punches on the ground to seal the deal. 4 inches of reach advantage for Paixao may have been all it needed in a match of two very similar fighters.

Jorge Hormazabal (20-9) vs Vagner (13-5)

Round 1

Vagner opens with a leg kick, and follows up with a flurry of punches that Hormazabal avoids just in time. Hormazabal shoots, but Vagner sprawls. On the ground in the front headlock position, Vagner unloads with some big punches, but Hormazabal springs back to his feet to avoid too much damage. Vagner lands a straight left hand and Hormazabal shoots, and Vagner sprawls again, feeding him some leather before standing back up. The round ends with Vagner keeping his distance and trying to feint Hormazabal into committing.

Round 2

Hormazabal lands his first strike, a left hand counter of a missed leg kick. Hormazabal tries to instigate a clinch, but Vagner keeps him back with strikes and forces him into a corner. He lands some jabs and tries to throw a cross, but gets taken down. Quickly advancing to the mount, Hormazabal goes for an armbar – Vagner rolls out of it and stands back up! The round ends before Vagner can impose his game.

Round 3

The third one probably decides it, and Hormazabal goes after it, landing a good combination of punches and shooting for a takedown, but Vagner stuffs it. Slipping past a jab, Vagner counters with a body kick. Hormazabal gets closer and clinches with Vagner and trips him to the ground. In half guard, the BJJ black belt quickly gets his leg free and gains side control. Vagner tries to escape as Hormazabal goes to mount, but only succeeds in giving up his back! Hormazabal is looking to isolate an arm, but Vagner keeps them tucked under his own body. Suddenly Hormazabal changes arms and rolls through and straightens the arm! Vagner taps furiously, this one is all over with just 30 seconds left!

The winner by Submission (Armbar): Jorge Hormazabal!

Hormazabal improves to 21-9, Vagner falls to 13-6.

Key statistics: Hormazabal did well on the feet, landing 6 punches, while Vagner landed 5 punches and 2 kicks. The story of the fight, though, was on the ground: Jorge scored two takedowns, passed guard all four times he tried to, and got the submission to finish.

Carlos dos Santos (13-3) vs Pedro Sousa (19-3)

Round 1

Dos Santos keeps out of range, avoiding a combination of punches and an attempted leg kick, and shoots in for a double leg, getting it right off the bat! He’s working to pass the guard, but Sousa does a good job warding him off and throwing some strikes from the bottom. Dos Santos does eventually pass into half guard and finishes the round on top, but lands no strikes.

Round 2

Sousa gets off to a good start, landing some jabs and stuffing a takedown from dos Santos. The two exchange punches, but neither gets through the guard of the other. Dos Santos feints and gets Sousa to commit to a strike, and scores with a single leg takedown! He easily gets side control, but doesn’t have the time to make anything happen from there.

Round 3

Sousa gets dos Santos to fall for a feint and throws a one-two, but is blocked. He lands a body punch before dos Santos slips out of range and avoids the follow up leg kick and a combination of punches. Dos Santos throws a combination to set up a takedown, and gets it. Working to pass the guard, dos Santos is blocked and the frustrated Sousa tries to strike from the bottom. Dos Santos eventually passes into half guard again, but can’t open up with strikes before the round ends.

All three judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner by Unanimous decision: Carlos dos Santos!

Dos Santos improves to 14-3, Sousa falls to 19-4.

Key statistics: Dos Santos made Sousa miss with all but 2 strikes and got a takedown in each round, although he didn’t do much with it. 0 ground strikes, but 3 guard passes made for a boring victory for the veteran dos Santos.

Welterweight Championship

Round 1

Silva opens up with a combination of punches that Palacios just avoids and finishes with a leg kick that lands. They exchange and momentarily end up clinched, but they break apart quickly. A lot of feeling out takes place, and Palacios tries to close the distance, but Silva counters with a picture-perfect left hook that catches him off-guard and knocks him down! Silva goes to finish with a vicious storm of soccer kicks and stomps, and Palacios is done! The referee dives in and pulls Silva off, that was violent!

Winner by TKO (Stomps and soccer kicks), and still the FLB Welterweight champion: Manuel Silva!

Silva improves to 14-0, Palacios falls to 22-7.

Key statistics: Palacios really got nothing done, going 0 for 1 in standing strikes. The champion only needed one kick and two punches to ground Palacios, and 8 vicious leg strikes on the ground to seal the deal and prove he is the true champion.

Decent second show, was happy to see Manuel do well but the fight got a Poor rating, maybe Palacios was too overmatched, or maybe there was too much measuring. The other fights delivered, especially the Vagner / Hormazabal fight and the heavyweight brawl.

The fight took place on the same night as ALPHA-1: da Guia vs Miyagi, where the doctor was forced to stop the fight due to a cut in favor of Ichisage Miyagi, who is now the new ALPHA-1 welterweight champion.

Attendance: 248 for gate of $5,704

Critical Rating: Decent

Commercial Rating: Great

Popularity Growth: 2.6%

Fight of the Night: Jorge Hormazabal & Vagner

Knockout of the Night: Manuel Silva

Submission of the Night: Jorge Hormazabal

I am starting to sense a pattern here, the striker versus BJJ artist fights are making great ratings. Last even FotN went to Desailly / Silveira, and now Vagner / Hormazabal. Both got Fantastic ratings.

Round Standings

Scottie: 13/18. Great picking, the only one that failed you was Leo Carlos Goulart, and the fact that Hormazabal got such an emphatic comeback to get a Fantastic rating and the FotN.

Nathers7: 13/18. Can you believe it, a tie? Well done with the picks, you even got the heavyweight brawl exactly right, but you made a little mental error with picking Silva to win via KO and still not have KOtN, KO's always get it before TKO's :). Anyhow, great picks. I've got some more difficult fights coming up soonish, it'll be interesting to see who prevails.

Since you're my two first pickers and you got a tied score, I'll give you both a point.

FLB 9 Official fight card announced!

It was revealed today that Fight League Brazil’s next show, FLB 9 would take place on Saturday, March Week 3 in Porto Alegre. Javier Souza released the official fight card for the media, and it is below:

Lightweight Championship:

(Champion) Branco (16-5) vs. Helio (14-1)

The battle of two devastating muay thai strikers, the FLB lightweight championship is a fight MMA fans all around the world have been craving for. Helio is technically the more proficient of the two, and possesses some of the most lethal kicks in the sport, but Branco likes to mix up his attacks with unorthodox strikes, posing an unpredictable threat.

Welterweight Bout:

Gabriel Gallego (15-4) vs. Propocio Golias (13-4)

The Argentinian Gallego was vocal about Claudio Palacios getting a title shot in February, as he felt he was the man to dethrone ‘the Prodigy’ Manuel Silva. Definitely a fight between top ranked welterweights, Gallego and Golias are both only one or two wins away from a title shot. Golias will look to use his wrestling to stifle ‘Mad Dog’ Gallego, the vicious muay thai wrecking machine who seems especially violent towards Brazilians, a fact that has earned him the nickname ‘Brazil’s most wanted’.

Heavyweight Bout:

Julio Correa (6-0) vs. Sergio do Vale (7-2)

The promotional newcomer Julio Correa faces a stiff test in his FLB debut, as he takes on well-rounded giant Sergio do Vale, who can competently box or wrestle. Do Vale has about 30 pounds of weight advantage over Correa, who will be trying to use his mobility and boxing to pick apart the bigger man.

Middleweight Bout:

Ramon da Silva Ramos (3-0) vs. Fausto Barbosa (3-0)

One of the more successful young kickboxers out of Brazil, Ramon da Silva is technically excellent, and possesses the perfect dynamic combination of power and speed. Barbosa is also a kickboxer, albeit one with lesser accomplishments in the sport, but he’s as tough as they come. The middleweights should provide an all out striking battle to entertain everybody watching.

Light Heavyweight Bout:

Ranieri Fernanda (3-0) vs. Flavio Alberto (1-0)

Ranieri Fernanda is perhaps one of, if not the most physically imposing 205-pounder in the game today. With a huge, muscular frame he could easily give problems to most heavyweights, but prefers to cut down to maximize his advantage. His style revolves around his powerful grappling and wrestling, and he’ll need it against the great hands of Flavio Alberto, a young former boxer with a powerful left cross.

Quick Picks

Branco vs Helio – BY KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Gabriel Gallego vs Propocio Golias – BY KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Julio Correa vs Sergio do Vale – BY KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Ramon da Silva Ramos vs Fausto Barbosa – BY KO/TKO/SUB/DEC

Fernanda vs Alberto was pure guesswork really, difficult one. Was going to go down the KO route in the main event due to Helio's muay thai ability but went safe with the TKO.

FLB 9 – Branco vs Helio is set to begin here in Porto Alegre, and the crowd seems excited about the match up that fans of MMA and striking alike have been waiting for. Many have tipped Helio as the best Brazilian lightweight, and Branco will want to prove his claim for that title, as he tries to defend his FLB lightweight championship. We will begin in the light heavyweight division.

Alberto avoids a jab and comes back with a crisp combination finishing with a left hand that floors Fernanda! He goes to follow up with some bombs, and Fernanda is only turtling up! The referee asks him to defend himself, but has to go and call the fight!

The winner by TKO (Punches): Flavio Alberto!

Alberto advances to 2-0, Fernanda falls to 3-1.

Key statistics: Alberto landed everything he needed, a 4-punch combination on the feet and 10 more strikes on the ground, and Fernanda never had a chance.

Next up in the middleweight division:

Ramon da Silva Ramos (3-0) vs Fausto Barbosa (3-0)

Round 1

The fighters open up with a feeling out process, throwing a few combinations into the guards. Da Silva draws first blood, landing a left hook, but Barbosa quickly counters with a left hand of his own. A jab misses from Barbosa, and da Silva counters with a left hook to the ribcage followed by a big right cross. Some more measuring and feinting takes place, and the round ends with relatively little action.

Round 2

The fighters spend a good three minutes without landing many strikes, feeling out and feinting, trying to find an opening. Ramon finds a home for a couple of jabs and a hard right kick to the ribs, and Barbosa returns fire with a jab of his own. The round ends with more feinting and trying to get the other man to overextend.

Round 3

Ramon throws a leg kick, but Barbosa avoids it. Da Silva steps in and lands a crunching right hook to the body, and doubles it up. Barbosa tries to return fire with a lead right, but misses and Ramon counters with a barrage of big punches! Barbosa covers up with nowhere to go, and falls to the ground under the pressure! The referee stops the fight!

The winner by TKO (Punches): Ramon da Silva Ramos!

Da Silva advances to 4-0, Barbosa falls to 3-1.

Key statistics: da Silva was the more active and precise striker, landing 22 arm strikes out of 40 thrown, as well as a body kick, while Barbosa only landed 5 of 22.

Moving on to the heavyweight division:

Julio Correa (6-0) vs Sergio do Vale (7-2)

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3075/juliocorrea.gif http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/865/sergiodovale.gif

Round 1

Correa opens up strong with a combination that stings do Vale. Circling out of the way of the big man, Correa lands peppering jabs and occasionally steps in to throw a combination, but do Vale avoids most of them with surprisingly good footwork for a man of his size. Correa tries to utilize the jab to keep do Vale at bay, but eventually gets grabbed in the clinch. Do Vale pushes Correa up against the ropes and controls him for the rest of the round.

Round 2

Correa comes out with a similar combination as in the first round, but this time he seems to catch do Vale off guard, and he goes down! Correa dives in and secures the full mount and starts crashing down elbows that bloody up do Vale and force the referee to stop the fight!

The winner by TKO (Punches & Elbows): Julio Correa!

Correa advances to 7-0, do Vale falls to 7-3.

Key statistics: do Vale never got anything off, landing 0 of 5, while Correa landed 11 of 30 and 4 devastating elbow strikes from the mount.

Next up is the co-main event in the welterweight division:

Gabriel Gallego (15-4) vs Procopio Golias (13-4)

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4463/gabrielgallego.gif http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9763/procopiogolias.gif

Round 1

Golias tries to close the distance quickly, but Gallego keeps him at bay with strikes, utilizing the jab well. After a wild exchange they end up clinched, and Golias goes to work with some dirty boxing, muscling Gallego up against the ropes. He lands some good knees to the legs and short uppercuts and punches, frustrating the Argentinian ‘Mad Dog’. Gallego seems unable to break the control of the squat, muscular Golias. The referee separates them at the end of the round, and Gallego stings Golias with a hard leg kick, but gets pulled into the clinch again, and the round ends.

Round 2

Both men throw strikes, Golias is looking confident standing with the muay thai specialist and is doing a great job avoiding damage. Suddenly the two get into a wild slugfest in the center of the ring, but neither lands a clean shot. Golias grabs Gallego off of the exchange and pushes him to the corner. He lands some short body punches and a footstomp, and finishes with an elbow strike over the top that seems to slice open the corner of Gallego’s eye. The referee quickly calls a pause to the action, and deems Gallego able to continue. The restart in the center should favor Gallego, but he’s unable to get off more than a jab before the round ends.

Round 3

Gallego lands a jab and throws a combination after it, but Golias avoids it. Golias goes to throw a jab of his own, but is slipped and countered by a left hook. Golias is keeping his guard dangerously low and walking forward with his chin up in the air, and Gallego tags him with some jabs, but eventually gets caught in the clinch again, and pushed up against the ropes. Golias goes to work with some dirty boxing, and lands two back-to-back elbows that seem to re-open the cut on Gallego’s face. The referee stops the fight to check on the cut once more, and the doctor says the wound is only minor. Golias shoots for a takedown at the restart but doesn’t get it, and the fighters exchange on the feet until the round ends.

All three judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner by Unanimous decision: Procopio Golias!

Golias advances to 14-4, Gallego falls to 15-5.

Key statistics: Even without the takedowns, Golias was able to impose a good game plan, landing an impressive 32 standing strikes with most in the clinch, while Gallego only landed a single kick and 6 arm strikes. A quite thorough domination by ‘Porco’.

Moving on to the main event in the lightweight division:

Lightweight Championship

Branco (16-5) vs Helio (14-1)

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4879/branco.gif http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6079/helio.gif

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/2668/flb.jpg

Round 1

Branco steps in and feints a kick, then steps back out. Helio throws a combination of punches that miss and Branco counters with a jab. He goes for a front kick, but Helio avoids it and counters with a roundhouse kick to the ribs. Helio slips past a jab and lands a beautiful three-punch combination and finishes it off with a leg kick. Branco misses with a jab and Helio counters with a right hand. The fighters circle and exchange jabs, looking to conserve energy for the 5-rounder, as the round comes to an end.

Round 2

Helio comes in aggressively in the second round and lands a scything leg kick, and another right after it. Branco’s left leg already has a bruise on it, and he seems limping slightly. Helio tries to close the distance, but Branco keeps him back with a jab. Helio eventually breaks through the line of defense and grabs Branco in the thai clinch. Helio throws a vicious elbow over the top, and a hard knee strike to the chest! Helio goes for another elbow, and Branco is bloodied. His weariness and bruised legs might make it difficult to circle out of the clinch, as Helio is keeping control. Fortunately for the champion, the round ends.

Round 3

Branco doesn’t land with his opening sequence, and Helio counters with a jab-cross combination. The champ is staying out of range, jabbing and feinting, trying to look for an opportunity to strike hard. They exchange, but neither gets a significant edge in terms of damage caused, as their guards stay up. Helio seems to get frustrated, stepping in with a barrage of big punches, but Branco steps aside and counters with a clean jab. He tries to double it up but Helio slips the second jab and counters with a hard leg kick. Helio follows up with a combination, but Branco covers up and comes back with a lead hook at the end of the round.

Round 4

We plunge into the deep water. Branco feints and gets Helio to throw a body kick that misses, and the champion counters with a left hand, followed by a scorchingly fast combination of punches. Helio quickly comes back with another leg kick and Branco winces in pain, only to eat another leg kick in a row. Branco tries to circle, but his movement is more limping than stepping. The champion tries to establish the jab, but Helio steps inside and lands a leg kick yet again. He tries to grab the champion in a clinch but Branco moves away and the round ends.

Round 5

The fighters measure the beginning of the final round with jabs, and Branco avoids one and counters. Helio moves in quickly and lands a body kick. Branco is looking to get closer, but gets caught by a big left hook, and he’s momentarily wobbly! Helio tries to move in to capitalize, but Branco keeps him back with a left hand, followed by a series of strikes that force him to step back. Branco tries to go on the aggressive but eats another vicious kick to the leg, Helio turned the hip over powerfully. Branco shows his tenacity, trying to keep advancing, but Helio keeps him at bay and lands a kick to the side of the body right at the final bell.

All three judges score the fight 50-45, for the winner and the new FLB Lightweight champion: Helio!

Helio advances to 15-1, Branco falls to 16-6.

Key statistics: Helio landed 15 out of 43 punches, Branco was more active on the arm strikes but only landed the same 15 out of 48 strikes. The difference was Helio’s crippling kicks and clinchwork, as he landed 11 out of 16 kicks, 2 elbows and an effective knee strike.

The epic main event battle got a poor rating, I wonder why because I thought that was very exciting. Maybe the crowd didn’t appreciate the highly technical striking, and there was no close finishes or stuff like that.

Golias steps one closer to the welterweight title shot, maybe one more win and he’s got it, depending on how the contender situation looks right now and how long the champ wants to have time off of his last fight. Also three very impressive debuts by Ramon da Silva Ramos, Flavio Alberto and JC Correa.

The event took place simultaneously with GAMMA 23 – Foster vs Hughes, were The King of ground and pound kept his title, elbowing Hughes to a stoppage due to a nasty cut. In the co-main event Tim Boyer TKO’d Jeff Carlton to most likely solidify his spot as the next man to face Foster.

damonster: 8/18. Good start, you did well with picking Flavio Alberto exactly right, I would've gone for Fernanda myself. Also, I was surprised to see the main event go the distance, and in my opinion it was an epic war, and yet it got a poor rating.

Nathers7: 8/18. Tied again! Since you knew there would be no submissions, you gain the point for that. You predicted Correa's victory to a tee, but Gallego and Fernanda let you down. Tough card to pick!

FLB 10 Official fight card announced!

It was revealed today that Fight League Brazil’s next show, FLB 10 would take place on Saturday, April Week 2 in Rio de Janeiro. Javier Souza released the official fight card for the media, and it is below:

Heavyweight Championship:

(Champion) Elzo Alves Moura (12-0) vs. Gladstone Lopes (12-0-1)

The champion will be coming into this fight with a chip on his shoulder, as Blurcat.com ranks Lopes higher than him, and will want to prove that he deserves the title of the best heavyweight fighting in Brazil. Moura is the more well-rounded threat of the two, having good jiu-jitsu skills and wrestling in his package in addition to his solid boxing, while Lopes has the more versatile and dangerous striking.

Lightweight Bout:

Giovani Silva (18-10) vs. Edson Edmilson (22-11)

The battle between two veterans Edmilson and Silva could determine a contender for the lightweight title of the newly crowned Helio. Edmilson is a jiu-jitsu specialist, while ‘The Brazilian Whirlwind’ Silva is an aggressive muay thai striker who will no doubt look to push the pace and overwhelm Edmilson with ceaseless strikes.

Light Heavyweight Bout:

Oscarino Baptista (20-9) vs. Denilson da Cunha (10-3)

The battle of two resilient brawlers in the middle of the card could provide excitement for the thrill-seekers and bloodthirsty fans in attendance, as da Cunha and Baptista both look for the knock out. Neither fighter will be looking to go to the ground, and the fight will most likely be decided by who lands hard first, or who can take it better.

Welterweight Bout:

Raniere da Lima (2-0) vs Hamilton Fonseca Junior (4-1)

da Lima is a decent kick boxer, while Fonseca is a good muay thai striker, who will have two distances where he can win the fight at: the clinch and the striking distance. Fonseca is coming off his first professional mixed martial arts loss, so it’ll be interesting to see whether he can rebound.

Middleweight Bout:

Leandro Bastos (2-0) vs Mario Varela (4-1)

Leandro Bastos is an extremely versatile young prospect with skills in striking, wrestling and BJJ. Mario Varela is is from an extensive muay thai back ground, and will look to use his punches, kicks, elbows and knees to stop Bastos, who would do well to take down Varela to negate his threat and finish the fight in an emphatic manner.

Quick Picks

Blurcat.com’s own Daniel Tuxford caught up with the FLB 10 – Moura vs Lopes headliners, Elzo Alves Moura and Gladstone Lopes after the weigh-in for an interview. The champion tipped the scales at 244 pounds, the challenger weighed in 13 pounds heavier at 257 lbs, and both looked in shape and ready to fight. Below is a written report of the interview:

DT: All right, I’m here with the number one contender for Fight League Brazil’s heavyweight title, Gladstone Lopes. Gladstone, how has training gone and what aspects of your game did you have to focus on preparing to face the champion?

GL (through translator): I always train in all disciplines, muay thai, boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu. Training was good, we got a good gameplan for this fight.

DT: Good to hear. Obviously you don’t want to give out your game plan, but what can we expect from ‘the Brazilian Bomber’ tomorrow night?

GL: I think I can knock him out. He’s a good fighter but I think I have the advantage with my power and muay thai.

DT: You are currently ranked higher than the champion Elzo Alves Moura on Blurcat.com’s Official MMA rankings. What do you think about that, or does that even matter to you?

GL: I don’t follow rankings much. I think when I am the champion I should be number one.

DT: All right, thanks Gladstone. We’re here now with the FLB heavyweight champion, Elzo Alves Moura. What do you have to say about the fact many people rank you lower than the challenger?

EAM(with no translator, with his own Brazilian accent): No matter, it doesn’t matter to me. I am a fighter, you know, and I only care about the fight. Rankings don’t mean anything to me.

DT: Right, it’s just somebody’s opinion after all. What do you think about the challenger, Gladstone Lopes?

EAM: I think he’s a very good fighter. I think he’s the best fighter in my category other than me. He’s got good skills.

DT: The weigh-ins just took place, and you came in at 244 pounds. Lopes weighed a little bit heavier, 257 pounds. How do you plan on negating the size difference?

EAM: Well, I am taller, no? He’s not much bigger, I think it’s not a big deal. I fought big guys before.

DT: All right, Elzo, best of luck in your fight tomorrow, I’ll be there watching and hopefully it’ll be a great fight! We appreciate you taking the time to talk to us.

EAM: Thanks you guys.

Round 1

Bastos manages to avoid a jab, followed by a combination of punches from Varela, but eats a hard kick to the leg instead. Varela lands a good cross, forcing Bastos to retreat to avoid the follow-up. Bastos tries to close the distance and shoots for a takedown, but doesn’t get it. Varela takes a second to switch stances, but Bastos steps in and lands a stinging jab. He shoots gain, but Varela stuffs it. The round ends.

Round 2

The fighters exchange evenly, with both Varela and Bastos landing some good shots. Varela tries to move in with a three punch combination, but Bastos avoids it by moving just out of range. As Bastos goes to close the distance, Varela lands several peppering jabs and keeps out of his reach. The round ends with Varela circling and jabbing and Bastos chasing.

Round 3

Varela takes control of the striking exchanges right off the bat, landing a jab and a left hook after it. Bastos doesn’t seem to like the idea of striking with him any longer, and shoots, but easily gets shrugged off again. He seems desperate and goes for another takedown, and this time Varela sprawls on top of him and starts landing some good punches on top. Bastos quickly scrambles out of the bad position and tries to capitalize on the last chance with a looping right hook, but misses, and the round ends.

All three judges score the fight 30-27, for the winner by Unanimous decision: Mario Varela!

Varela advances to 5-1, Bastos falls to 2-1.

Key statistics: Bastos going 0 for 6 in takedown attempts, and Varela outlanding him on the feet, although not doing much (6 punches and 1 kick, 18 ground strikes).

Raniere de Lima (2-0) vs Hamilton Fonseca Junior (4-1)

Round 1

Fonseca opens with a combination that de Lima manages to avoid apart from a clean right cross that slips through the guard. De Lima just misses with a hook to the body, but extends a jab after it and scores. The fighters exchange jabs and short combinations, not scoring anything that shifts the fight into the favor of one or the other. Hamilton seems to get the better of the exchanges at the end of the round, however.

Round 2

Both men land a jab each, but Hamilton quickly steps inside the range of de Lima and throws several big left hands that drop him! Hamilton pounces, and de Lima can’t seem to find a way to defend the strikes that keep landing over and over, and the referee steps in to call the fight!

The winner by TKO (Punches): Hamilton Fonseca Junior!

Fonseca advances to 5-1, de Lima falls to 2-1.

Key statistics: Both guys were good at avoiding most significant hits, with de Lima going only 2 out of 13 punches and Fonseca only 7 for 21, and 0 for 3 in kicks. That was all he needed, though, as he finished the fight with 11 strikes landed on the ground.

Oscarino Baptista vs Denilson da Cunha

Round 1

The fight opens quickly with punches in bunches, with Baptista landing the cleaner shots, although da Cunha doesn’t seem to feel them. Baptista moves in and out, landing short sequences of strikes before moving back out to avoid the counters, dominating the round.

Round 2

At the beginning of the second round da Cunha advances quickly, but is met with a couple of hard right hands from Baptista! Moving backwards, he seems rocked! Baptista loads up his right hand and throws all the momentum he can find into it, clobbering da Cunha and sending him to the canvas, out cold!

The winner by KO (Punches): Oscarino Baptista!

Baptista advances to 21-9, da Cunha falls to 10-4.

Key statistics: da Cunha only landed a single strike in the fight, a punch out of 10 attempts. Baptista landed a respectable 20 out of 42, resulting in a 48% percentage.

Giovani Silva (18-10) vs Edson Edmilson (22-11)

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/3830/giovanisilva.gif http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/6914/edsonedmilson.gif

Round 1

Edmilson misses a jab and Silva comes back with one of his own and rushes after him. The barrage of punches that follows doesn’t find it’s mark as Edmilson steps out of range. Edmilson waits for Silva to step closer and shoots, but gets shrugged off. He doesn’t give up easily though, as he goes for another takedown right away, but Silva showcases good hips in warding him off. Silva lands a series of quick jabs as Edmilson is trying to close the distance. Edmilson slips a punch and counters with some of his own. After the exchange they end up clinched, where Edmilson manages to trip Silva down and gain side control, but the round ends before anything more can happen.

Round 2

Silva lives up to his nickname ‘the Brazilian Whirlwind’ as he storms right out of the gate and tags Edmilson with a couple of hard rights! Edmilson doesn’t seem phased, though, as he avoids the following combination and counters with a good combination of his own. Silva is getting the better of the striking, though, as he lands a left hook and a jab followed by a body kick. They seem to have gotten into a wild brawl, as both men swing with reckless abandon, with Silva being the more methodical of the two, throwing feints, jabs and kicks. The exciting round of slugging comes to an end, and the crowd in Rio is cheering.

Round 3

Silva catches Edmilson right away with a series of big punches, although only a couple went through his guard properly. Standing in the pocket, Edmilson shoots under some punches and takes Silva down with a lot of time to work! He easily passes into side control and takes some time to catch his breath and plan ahead. Suddenly, he quickly throws his other leg over Silva’s head and grabs an armbar that immediately forces Silva to tap! Wow, what a comeback!

The winner by Submission (Armbar): Edson Edmilson!

Edmilson advances to 23-11, Silva falls to 18-11.

Key statistics: Really the key statistic is Edmilson’s 1 out of 1 submission attempts, but he also managed to pass guard both times he wanted, and got two takedowns out of five. Silva outlanded him on the feet, 18 to 13 in punches and 1 to 0 in kicks.

Heavyweight Championship

Round 1

The champion tries to start off slow, measuring the distance with the jab, but Lopes immediately steps in and unloads with a couple of hard right hands! He finishes off the combination with a leg kick, but Moura checks it nicely and counters with a jab. Lopes throws a barrage of punches but Moura covers up well to avoid damage. Moura checks another leg kick and throws a stiff jab and doubles it up. Lopes goes for a superman punch, but the champion slips out of the way and lands a counter jab. Lopes lands a jab and throws a leg kick, but Moura checks it well and lands a jab of his own. Lopes quickly steps forward with a flurry of quick punches, pushing the champion back. Moura showcases good head movement, avoiding most of the damage as Lopes is pushing forward. Moura lands one more jab to close out the round, and the fans are on their feet as the round ends, that was exciting!

Round 2

Lopes throws a body kick, but misses, allowing Moura to counter with a punch. The champion follows it up with a smart combination that gets Lopes to cover up, and then shoots in for a takedown, but Lopes stuffs it well. Moura shows his head movement again, slipping and ducking past a barrage of big punches, and lands a counter left hook in the pocket. Lopes slips past a jab and counters with a quick leg kick that Moura isn’t able to check. He goes for another kick, but Moura avoids it and shoots in for a takedown, but Lopes sprawls on top of him. Lopes lands a huge knee to the head of the champion, and follows it up with an even more brutal soccer kick! Moura is out!

The winner by KO (Knee and Soccer Kick), and the new FLB heavyweight champion: Gladstone Lopes!

Lopes improves to 13-0-1, Moura falls to 12-1.

Key statistics: Lopes was the more active fighter, outlanding Moura on the feet, as well as landing the more significant punches, and eventually finishing the fight on the ground with just two perfect strikes.

An awesome event full of action although the bottom card wasn’t very exciting. Lopes seems to be in very good form in this game, and could have a dominant reign over the division. The only man to stop him now seems to be Murilo Satinho, if he gets a couple more wins under him, but Satinho wasn’t overly impressive in his last outing.

Attendance: 287 for gate of $6,601

Critical Rating: Good

Commercial Rating: Great

Popularity Growth: 2.4%

Fight of the Night: Edson Edmilson & Giovani Silva

Knockout of the Night: Gladstone Lopes

Submission of the Night: Edson Edmilson

The striker / grappler didn’t disappoint, scoring the best fight in the game so far out of any company, a perfect Excellent rating. The main event was an epic war as well, I would’ve liked it to go a bit longer though, but Lopes got a brutal finish with a soccer kick, and that’s always nice. The fight scored Great rating.

Re-signings, suspensions, injuries etc:

Denilson da Cunha got beat badly by Oscarino Baptista, but I decided to send him a renegotation offer, as I can still use him as an opponent for somebody else coming off losses.

Giovani Silva sustained an elbow injury from the armbar of Edmilson, and is out of training and fighting for 2-6 months, depending how severe the injury is according to the doctors.

Former champ Elzo Alves Moura sustained no serious damage, and is able to return to action soon, and is most likely targeted to fight again in the summer.
