It was acceptable in the 80s - BEMod: Retro

Recommended Posts

Posted

As those of you who check out the Board Effort mod thread regularly are probably aware before the beta of that has been released 2 additional mods have begun being thought about, one set in 2025 and one in 1985. Guess which one this is...

That's right, this is the progress thread for the retro mod.

This one will be a little different though due to it having to lead up to the original. So, the first thing will be putting all the 'canon' info in there, like defunct promotions mentioned in wrestlers bios will now have to be created, populated with workers some of which will be parents of workers in the current day mod, etc, etc. Anyone who's looked into the C-Verse That 70s Mod will know what I mean.

So it will be a little while before submissions for workers & promotions will be required as it makes the most sense if the team that worked on the original can get all their existing visions of the past in first. I hope that's cool with folks. :D

I don't expect this thread to be on the front page for long, it'll prob drop off till after at least the beta BEMod comes out. But it will probably have a fair bit of chat about world direction, etc so feel free to chuck ideas in :)

The general feel of the game world is one where the territory system has died pretty recently in Canada, Europe & the UK with large promotions being formed by the joining of forces of 3 or 4 small/regional promotions to become one big cult/national touring promotion.

However in the US the FWC has 5/6/7 (cant remember) promotions under its umbrella, with one in Mexico and one in Canada too all fighting against the International powerhouse that is US-A at the height of its power.

(if you haven't read any of the Board Effort Mod thread I'm probably doing the web equivalent of speaking in tongues right now, sorry :o)

I've attached a copy of the current data I have to the bottom of this post. All active promotions are set at my rough guess of where they should be given their history in their OG bio. Very little of the FWC is done as yet, this isn't playable in any way yet ;) If anyone wants changes doing let me know, if anyone wants the data off me to add their parts in let me know on here and I'll reattach an up-to-date version.

Active promotions:

USA

FWC: Florida Wrestling Federation

Based in South East

National

Federal Wrestling Council: Florida Wrestling Federation is a member of the Federal Wrestling Council, which is the major governing body in the United States wrestling industry.

FWF actually serves as the ‘home base’ for the Federal Wrestling Council as the FWC’s home offices are located in Jacksonville, Florida, which is also where the FWF is located. FWF was at one point the crown jewel in American professional wrestling, however in recent years with the rise of US-A FWF has taken a small knock in popularity.

FWC: Hawaii Island Wrestling

Based in Hawaii

Regional

Federal Wrestling Council: Hawaiian Island Wrestling is a member of the Federal Wrestling Council, which is a major power in the United States wrestling industry.

FWC: HIW is one such promotion, and their owner sits on the FWC board of directors. The FCW has very little say over anything that goes on in the promotion other than talent sharing. The FWC: HIW offers a product that is more traditional with the focus being on the actual matches and not on wrestlers’ gimmicks.

Jewish Immigrant Pro Wrestling

Based in Mid Atlantic

Small

JIPW can trace its roots back to pre-World War II-era New Empire Wrestling that existed in the German Empire owned by Aharon Writzen. The company closed as Aharon escaped the nation prior to the ****s reign of terror on the Jewish people. It was reopened in the United States by Writzen in 1967 and bought out by his son Gideon Wright 3 years later. Gideon recristened it Jewish Immigrant Pro Wrestling but due to it's new xenophobic outlook JIPW saw a quick decline in its momentum from which is has never recovered. The promotion actually closed in 1981 for several years and only re-opened it's doors in December 1984. Unfortunately Gideon's xenophobic vision of pro wrestling still prevails, although he has handed over the book to young, forward-thinking (and more importantly, major investor) Jewish wrestler Joshua Weinstein.

Lone Star State Wrestling League

Based in the Mid South

Regional

Richard Frusciante (better known to wrestling fans as Ivan Brezhnev), founded LSSWL in 1974. Frusciante started up the company after controversially leaving the US-A while he was still their reigning World Champion. The LSSWL quickly became known as the land of the steel cage, as all of their major feuds ended in some sort of steel cage match.

For the past ten years Ivan Brezhnev and Tex Wilson have been holding the promotion afloat with their long running feud over the LSSWL Heavyweight Title but with Tex's retirement in 1984 and retirement from active competition looming for Ivan himself LSSWL need to bring up some fresh blood into the main event scene pretty soon.

United States All-Stars

Based in the Mid Atlantic

International

Founded in 1954, United States All-Stars is one of the oldest wrestling promotions running consistantly in the United States. Starting out as the main regional company in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States, US-A was originally called Richmond Wrestling League. In 1964, William Lee Jr. took over the promotion from his father.

The first thing that Junior did was change the name of the promotion to United States All-Stars. Junior had dreams of expanding his promotion outside of the Mid Atlantic region and making US-A the first national promotion in the United States. He started aggressively signing the top talent away from other companies all around the country. He achieved his goal of becoming the first national wrestling promotion in the United States, finally acheiving his goal in early 1981.

US-A has gone from strength to strength in the last four years and recently expanded their range into Canada where they currently go head to head with the MLWA on TV every Saturday night.

To be added to make things canon that I know of: FWC promotions in Great Lakes, Tri-State, New England, and the West Coast and the Texas Wrestling Federation.

UK

Great British Wrestling Federation

Based in the South

National

The Great British Wrestilng Federation was founded in 1952 by British legend Walter Reid and for the first twenty years of it's existence was simply a nationally recognised umbrella under which a variety of smaller promotions worked under.

Successor John Powell decided to radically change the direction of the organisation. He contacted all six of the promotions that were members & informed them that from June 1972 they would no longer be supported by the GBWF as it would be touring it's own shows. Powell offered to buy out all the promotions & use as many existing GBWF workers as possible. The Association of Scottish Wrestling, Capital Championship Wrestling (London), Black Country Grappling Alliance (West Midlands), and Sheffield Steel Wrestling (Northern England) all accepted and closed their doors, Red Dragon Pro Wrestling (Wales) & the Commonwealth Wrestling Organisation (Ontario, Canada) continued independently.

Highland Wrestling

Based in Scotland

Local

Highland Wrestling, opened by Gus McAllistar in June of 1984, is a bizarre little promotion, focusing mainly on comedy and violence with very little actual wrestling. The entire gimmick for the promotion is that it is a place for warring Scottish clans to settle their differences.

Red Dragon Pro Wrestling

Based in the Midlands (actually Wales but TEW doesn't really take that in to account)

Small

Red Dragon Pro Wrestling was founded in 1968 by Welsh wrestler Dai Griffiths. Dai could never understand why promotions never did show in Wales outside of Cardiff, as he was well aware that there were a whole host of smaller venues in the valley villages that were crying out for ANY kind of entertainment to visit. Aware that the Welsh like a laugh he incorporated a large amount of comedy into his product.

To add weight to his promotion he signed RDPW up to the Great British Wrestling Federation and, using the working agreements between members, brought big-time British wrestling names to the valleys of Wales for the first time.

In 1972 the GBWF as an umbrella was dissolved and Dai was offered the chance to sell his promotion. Certain that the new GBWF would care as much about his beloved Wales as every other promotion before them he chose to stay independant and still has close ties with fellow 'opt-out' promotion the Commonwealth Wrestling Organisation 13 years later.

The Irish Wrestling Syndicate

Based in Ireland

Cult

The Irish Wrestling Syndicate was opened in Dublin, Ireland in 1952 by a consortium of professional wrestlers and some decidedly dodgy types. At the time it was unknown to the public that wrestling was somewhat scripted and so the criminal owners started taking bets on matches and ended up cleaning out the wallets of every crowd that saw their shows.

In 1960 the police finally rumbled the scam and the criminal elements went to jail but main eventer Gerry O'Haire and road agent Keith Malley took on the promotion and turned things around. It took twenty years but the pair managed to turn a disgraced local touring promotion into the pride of Ireland. Gerry retired from active competition in 1982 and took over road agent and booking duties from Keith who retired from the business completely.

To be added to make things canon that I know of: None.

CANADA

Commonwealth Wrestling Oraganisation

Based in Ontario

Regional

The Commonwealth Wrestling Oraganisation was founded in 1970 by Harrold Hunter, a retired British wrestler who moved to Canada in his younger days but fell in love with French-Canadian valet The Vancoover Vixen and settled down.

While visiting family in the UK Hunter went to watch a local Black Country Grappling Alliance show and was very impressed with the quality of wrestlers and production values displayed by such a small promotion. He chatted with owner Greg Henson about it, and Greg filled him in on the GBWF and their investment schemes for small promotions within the group.

Back in Canada Hunter secured a small loan and, after discussing things with the Board of the GBWF, opened the Commonwealth Wrestling Organisation as the first ever member of the GBWF based in a foreign country. When the GBFW changed direction 2 years later Hunter decided to risk going it alone rather than sell up to the board, although they still work with fellow 'opt-out' fed RDPW.

To be added to make things canon that I know of: Former umbrella organisation turned National promotion the Maple Leaf Wrestling Alliance, regional CWW and a small Canadian branch of the FWC

EUROPE

European Wrestling Alliance

Based in Central Europe

Cult

The European Wrestling Alliance began life as a collection of small independent promotions: Deuchland Championship Wrestling (Germany), Gladius Wrestling (Italy) and Luxemburg Wrestling Showcase (Luxemburg).

All these promotions had worked together and traded talent for years. However in 1974 Hans DeTrick, owner, booker and main event heel of LWS was shot in the back after an event by a fan who he had got in the face of while in character earlier in the night. Hans survived but was left paralised from the neck down and was left with no choise but to leave the business.

Cris Funuchi (owner of GW) and Heinrich Gruber (owner & booker of DCW) got together and offered to buy their longtime friend's business rather than having it close, giving their friend one last fat pay-check in the process. To make things easier Cris & Heinrich decided to amalgumate all three promotions into one big touring one. Cris went on the books as the owner, with Heinrich taking on the booking of shows.

Riviera Championship Wrestling

Based in the Mediterranean

Regional

Riviera Championship Wrestling was started up by Riviera Rider, a European business tycoon with a string of Hotel and Casinos throughout the World. He was briefly involved with Gideon Wright's JIPW in the U.S. but bought his way out of the deal when he grew discontented with Gideon's xenophobic nature and refusal to incorporate non-Jewish talent for more then 4 shows.

This led to JIPW's sporadic schedule and Rider focused on his casinos until 1977 when he had gained enough contacts and influence to open RCW in his prize casino in Europe. Also known as Riviera Rider's Championship Wrestling.

United Soviet Superstars Revolution

Based in Eastern Europe

Regional

The United Soviet Superstars Revolution isn't so much of a revolution these days, but back in 1977 it was the most innovative thing in Europe, being the first European company to focus their product on angles and storylines focused on stars mainly from the Eastern Block. Unfortunately, the company's innovation stopped in around 1981.

JAPAN

Inperiaru Puroresu Doujou

Based in Tohoku

Regional

Inperiaru Puroresu Doujou or "Imperial Pro Wrestling Dojo" is the regional promotion where new graduates of Kokka No Wrestling's "Imperial Dojo" begin their slow climb to the top.

Kokka No Wrestling

Based in Hokkaido

Cult

Kokka No Wrestling is short for Zenkoku Puroresu Kigyou Rengou, which translated to english as the "National Pro Wrestling Syndicate". The NPWS is the official name of the Kokka No Wrestling governing body, and all titles bear KPKR and NPWS logos on the side plates as well as KNW on the center plate.

The company is a joint effort by two wrestling legends, mixing the styles of Rejiendo (puroresu) and Misuta Mekishiko (Mr. Mexico of lucha libre fame) to put forth a very unique product.

One recent interesting byline of the company is that even most foreign wrestlers have adopted Japanese variations of their name.

Nashonaru Joshi Puroresu Shoukan

Based in Hokkaido

Small

Run by Lady Oni, Rejiendo's daughter-in-law, NJPS was once a part of Kokka No Wrestling that eventually spun off into a seperate independent promotion in 1984 to concentrate solely on elevating women's wrestling and continues the rich history of the Kokka No Women's Championship now known as the NJPS Empress of Japan title.

US Forces Combat Wrestling

Based in Kyushu

Local

US Forces Combat Wrestling started as a late night 'fight club' type affair in a bar local to the Okinawa US military base for US soldiers to settle disputes outside of the military legal system.

However the fights proved incredibley popular with the locals who enjoyed watching G.I.s beating the snot out of each other and so the Major & Sergeant who organised the bouts got together with the best fighters and decided to start making things easier to control.

The formula was left the same, with fighters airing their grevancies then fighting till one is either knocked out or conceeds defeat.

To be added to make things canon that I know of: None

MEXICO

La Gran Liga de Lucha de Mundo

Based in West Central Mexico

National

"La Gran Liga de Lucha de Mundo" or "The Great Wrestling League" was founded by El Gran Heroe (The Great Hero) in the heart of Mexico City during a three day outdoor festival in 1932. As the nations most celebrated luchadore, El Gran Heroe created the promotion out necessity after helping to send his former boss - the owner of Mexican juggernaut "Mexico City Lucha Libre" - to jail, leaving the country with a huge wrestling void.

Prior to the now legendary wrestling festival in which La Gran Liga de Lucha de Mundo debuted, El Gran Heroe promoted to fans unprecedented access to Mexico's biggest stars, causing attendance records to be shattered at the event. In the aftermath of the festival, wrestler payouts climbed to previously unheard of numbers. As a result, GLLM quickly supplanted MCLL, eventually becoming the largest pro wrestling company in Mexican history.

Mexico Pro Wrestling Alliance

Based in South Eastern Mexico

Cult

Michael Rodriguez debuted MPWA on television in 1981. Its said that it cost him more to put that first show on the air than it did to run the promotion for the next year. After greasing several palms and convincing a major television company to put MPWA on the air as a special wrestling program. Fans tuned in shocked to see some of the biggest names in all of GMLL competing on this new promotion. Presenting a more modern, edgier version of pro wrestling MPWA has taken the younger demographic away from GMLL and are seemingly on course to challenge for the position of top promotion in Mexico.

MPWA is heavily influenced by American wrestling with more dramatic, edgier stories. And just like in American wrestling his workers do a lot of talking on shows and the ppv's are almost all pure wrestling with little talking.

The company owner Michael Rodriguez chose to use the English translation of the name to try to blur the lines between American wrestling and Mexican Wrestling
