Parsons Online Backyard Wrestling is an indy fed that I started up in August of 2009. The reason I am starting a thread now, is because last nite I put up the first show we've done with our new ring. We used to be a trampoline fed, but now we're trying to make a legit run at being something more.

Above is a link to Episode 33, titled Under Construction. The Raging Redneck, Cletus makes an open challenge to anyone who wants to face him. Major Shadow makes a similar open challenge for any tag team to face him and his mystery partner.

And in the main event the POBYW SEK Champion, Dark Phoenix, takes on the man he beat for the title in the Season 2 Finale, Fluffy the Straight Edge Emo.

This fed has been my life for the last 2 years. So any comments would be greatly appreciated. Either on the video or on here. Positive and negative opinions welcome. Thank you.

i got about two minutes in. did not have any idea who the first dude was, (there is a reason wrestlers talk in the third person). or what he was talking about.

Then the same guy or his twin brother comes out  I think from the splash screen his name was cletus.

20 seconds of back story to by monotone mike, especial if it comes with cut footage would go a long way to set up the trash talk, and let new comers know what is going on. and also should not keep old hands from saying 'yeah i already know that'

Two minutes? You fricken slacker, I watched all 33 minutes and was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Camo pants guy is the best and I am pretty sure he is also the guy in the mask. Although he looks like the one 30 year old dude wrestling a bunch of 17 year olds so one would hope he had some clue.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubbles here but negative comments were welcomed. Yall really will need to learn how to wrestle if you want to take it to the next level. This is episode 33 and nobody seems to know basic things like bumping, locking up or selling with any consistency. It seems like someone should get on that.

Alright then, I'll address some of your feedback so far.

There is a screen before each promo saying who is speaking

Kayfabe aside, I play 4 different wrestlers in POBYW.

You're right, Major Shadow is probably our best wrestler (He also plays a couple other wrestlers as well).

I am flattered that you think he is the only 30something though, as I myself am 31.

This IS Episode 33, however it's the very 1st inside an actual ring. It is going to take some time to get used to it. If you watch the last few Episodes of Season 2 you'll see we did way more bumping and performed better moves. The fact is, we're weary to do too much too soon because of the difference between falling on a trampoline and falling onto the hard ring floor.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll be happy to reply to anything else you guys have to say. And I'll link the next show when it comes out on April 8th.

I'm also in a backyard wrestling league. We bought an actual ring last summer, but thanks to an injury my brother sustained, we didn't get to actually wrestle until this year. We have an indoor ring now in a storage facility owned by a local bar.

We're starting fresh this spring with a new name and not even acknowledging our previous attempts.

Do you guys have any padding in your ring? We're using carpet padding that was donated to us by a local carpet store. We also have wrestling mats on there.

Our first show is on April 10th.

@Jaysin...where is CWR being held? I couldn't seem to ferret out the answer from your website.

@Rone...1st thing I would do is stop shooting promos outside. Find a wall indoors somwehre and dress it up the way ECW used to do it when they cut promos in the basement of Heyman's house. Also, do not use 1 guy multiple times if we can figure it out...seriously use some masks/heavy face paint/ glasses/something to obscure the fact. Hire/get someone to play a ref. 50% of wrestling is getting po'd the ref blew a call or missed a foot on the ropes.

Monotone Mike? needs to be less monotone! A good announcer can make a match a bad announcer can make you click the vid off. As has been said previously...work on your basics.

I didn't mind Monotone Mike, I thought he was kind of funny and could be used to play on how over the top some announcers are.

Something like "Oh my god. This is the most amazing night in the history of our sport" delivered totally deadpan is not without some charm.

Oh, we're in Rootstown, Ohio. A little place in the middle of nowhere.

We have a little bit of padding that came with the ring. It's pretty hard on fall on, to be honest. I'll check out your website as soon as I am done replying here.

Also I should have mentioned before, POBYW has a website as well. It's not flashy as I have no html experience outside of Geocities.

Seasons 1 and 2 we did promos against the side of our garage. It provided a solid white backdrop. Maybe we should consider doing at least SOME of our promos that way again.

As far as not using the same people over and over, we have a very small roster. If we only let people wrestle as 1 character, we'd have a grand total of 5 wrestlers (6 if you count our inflatable wrestler). But with me doing 4, my buddy Jason doing 3, and my other buddy Dustin doing 2, POBYW sports a roster of 13.

We have a ref who is supposed to debut this season, however he is a Dad and his kids have alot of activities outside of school so we haven't been able to get him involved yet.

I've had ALOT of complaints about Monotone Mike (which is me also) but there are a few reasons why I won't be changing it. One, its different than any other announcer out there. Two, it makes my voice different than when I am playing Fluffy, Cletus, Glitch, Employee of the Month. And Three, I also like deadpan humor.

I'm glad to be getting so much feedback here. The other forum I posted this at just put up a bunch of porno pictures and flamed me all to hell.

Paint your garage green, point some light at it and you could chroma key some stuff in the background like a logo or some naked chicks.

I still think Inside is the way to promo because the wind was really affecting the sound quality. Also if you have only 5 wrestlers, rather than short crap matches why not try to do longer old school type matches. Make us care about the "big" move you hit.
Posted

I know the wind was harsh. We don't really have anywhere indoors to do it.

Longer matches definitely is NOT the answer. Let me ask everyone, what match in EP 33 did you find to be the best? I can tell you guys honestly which match I thought was the worst. The tag match. The tag match was disjointed all to hell. It also happened to be the match that had the least amount of scripting to it.

This is one problem our fed has. I want our matches to be 100% scripted out. Most everyone else just wants to wing it. They don't have any training though. And I don't either, but I think I have a pretty good idea of how to create a proper flow.

Anyway, I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed talking about this today. Usually the only people I get to talk POBYW stuff with is the guy who plays Shadow.

Posted

A combination of scripted and improvisation is the way to go. I think 100% either way is too shotty.

We plan out the finish and a bunch of spots and we fill in the empty spaces during the match.

Also, you should look into getting some more padding. I've been in TNA's ring and they have a really padded ring. So its not out of the ordinary for them to be soft.

I recommend carpet padding or mattress padding.

Posted

I looked into getting more padding, but everything I saw online was in the hundreds of dollars.

Honestly, I am the only one in POBYW who seems to be afraid to bump. I'm not just fearful of my own safety though. We ALL have jobs (minus Masochist) and I have every intention of making sure they don't lose those jobs due to our little wrestling fed.

Don't get me wrong, I AM serious about this. I've loved wrestling since I was 5 years old. I am 31 now. I'll never be properly trained. I have no aspirations to be in the WWE or TNA. But I'll make POBYW the best online wrestling fed in the world if I can help it.

Longer matches would work IF you used some rest holds and such. Certain things, like working the crowd spots can't be done since there appears to be no crowd, but other things can like taunting an opponent to get up.

As for indoor spots...ANYWHERE can work with proper touching up. Use a basement wall, an attic wall, hell a kitchen wall...just tell people it's the POBYW offices/arena/convention center.

I'd go with a 70%-80% script for these perticular guys since they have 0 training.

Rone, are you LordBarros on youtube?

- Not the greatest quality, but our first actual show is this Sunday, which leads me to...What I'm

CWR First Strike!- Not my best photoshopping, but I'm rusty. The First Strike logo though, I'm super proud of that. I think it looks sweet. I doubt anyone here is interested in seeing it, but First Strike will be on youtube sometime next week. I'll probably post again to let people know

Which button do I have to click to turn off slow motion?

Snide mark asides, you need to seriously up the pace. Now I understand that you're not professional wrestlers and doesn't want to take huge risks, but honestly: you seem EXTREMELY afraid to get a few bumps and bruises which gives a too cautious, overly planned, slow and way too obviously worked match... and if you are unwilling to do bump a bit now and then, you probably shouldn't be wrestling in the first place. And most of all, improve your selling - both when taking and giving offense. The selling here is horrid.

Sorry if I came across as too harsh, I do think it's very cool that you're doing this.

Pretty cool logo, but I find the font VERY hard to read.

Trust me, I don't take offense to people telling us we're not bumping enough or are afraid too. The fact is, we kinda are. And we have good reason. Our show scheduled for Friday is being postponed because after ONE show in our new ring, we freaking broke like half the wood. It's almost completely fixed now (with better quality). But yeah, our ring was not only poorly supported it was breaking as we were wrestling on it. That's why we're afraid to bump.

But no worries, once we're done fixing it, we'll hopefully be able to put on more convincing matches. If you saw some of our other shows back when we were on the trampoline, we did bumping and all that. Even better, just watch the Top 10 Non Finishing Moves and the Top 10 Finishers of POBYW. They are both recent videos and showcase what we're capable of.

I enjoyed the video and I agree with the comments made regarding scripted vs unscripted. You need a certain amount of scripting but also the ability to do things on the fly.

Have you seen the movie The Wrestler? I found it quite interesting that before matches Randy would discuss the match in terms of either one or two moves he wanted to do on one end of the scale, through to almost move by move what he wanted done. It would be a lot more work before you get into the ring, but I think it would improve things a lot!
