Mr T Jobs To Me Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Marlon John used to kick a lot of ass in my game thanks to the fact that he can take anyone down and pass at will. Lately, he seems to think his submission skills are worth something and continuously gives up mount trying for an armbar. Anyone else having a fighter who doesn't have tactics set go full retard like this?
Cinderkun Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 A surprising amount of my fighters will do this, actually. I'll have a boxer/kickboxer that'll drop someone, manage to get mount or side control, and instead of going for ground and pound like you'd expect, they attempt a submission. Same thing with wrestlers that have poor submission skills. Of course, it almost never works. Every time I see it I think of Kampmann trying to choke out Jake Shields.

Mr T Jobs To Me Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 Dan Hardy and his 37 kimura attempts on Rumble Johnson. It's not just the futility of it, it's the fact that his GnP is so deadly and he's making concerted attempts not to use it in favor of the mediocre submission skills- it's cost him two fights now and caused him to go to 4 consecutive decisions. The only diagnoses I could come up with is a patch may have thrown his logic out of whack or his sub attack reached a certain point to where he now prioritizes it over his superior ground striking.
Paatero Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 In general armbar attempts from the mount happen way too often I think. In real life almost nobody goes for it unless it's the end of the round, because it's very uncertain you'll have it and you give up not only top position, but the best position you can have for it.
lean Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I agree, this is a major flaw in the gameplay. Even with mediocre planning skills a fighter should still know when his GnP is lightyears ahead of his subs, and if his opponent has good sub defense. That being said, the fighters who somehow manage to avoid these unstrategic sub attempts tend to be pretty dominant.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is one of the few things in the game that drives me crazy. In MMA guys don't go for the armbar from the mount very often for this very reason -- if you don't get it your opponent will stack you and take side control. I think guys attempt the mounted armbar way too often in WMMA. The other match engine thing that bugs me is when guys try to grab an arm or a guillotine choke from bottom side control. It is very difficult to submit someone from bottom side control and I think only the very top BJJ guys should even attempt it. Seems to happen quite a bit in the game. Having said that, I think the match engine is amazing. But I would like to see those two things changed.
Wehmer Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Also, no one seems to lock in a body triangle from the back, it's always hooks in. And also, they rarely GNP from there, it's always spamming of RNC.
xspudx Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 The thing that annoyed me about the game, and still does is the ridiculous groundplay. Countless times I've seen "so and so attempts a takedown! so and so gets it! now he's passing to side control... he passes effortlessly... attempts to mount... he gets it! armbar/gnp/blahblahblah" It's just so dull. They'll constantly try to get to mount then attempt the same submission over and over again. There's no actual logic involved.
Guest Alpha1 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Not quite the same thing, but close. I've seen so many wrestlers with solid standup eager to take the 'world class black belt jiujitsu' guy down, only to get subbed right after. It would be better if they used their wrestling to keep the fight standing and easily dominate one-dimensional specialist.
