Jaysin Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I'm hoping there's someone here who plays them, but my brother and I have been looking at these lately. Specifically After The Bomb, Shadowrun and D&D have caught our eye. I'm hoping we end up investing in After The Bomb, but where would we begin to go about starting this stuff? So far, we only have myself, my brother, and a friend of ours interested. So my next question is, would three people be enough to get started?
mjdgoldeneye Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 No joke, I was considering starting a thread about this earlier today! I haven't played any tabletop RPG's, but some friends of mine and I are trying to start playing Pathfinder RPG. It's pretty much a modified D&D (literally, a lot of it is exactly the same and it's based on 3rd edition or something). However, it's a little more streamlined than D&D, from what I understand. Now would be a good time to ask if anyone on GDS would like to try some sort of play-by-post or play-by-chat of some sort of game like this? It's be a little hard to set up, but if we could, it'd be fun.
Guest cmdrsam Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Face palms self. Nobody pay attention to my avatar or who I am. God I dont want to say it. That D game, there, thats as close as I am going to say it. That D game, how many hours did I spend playing that. Dont know about the other two, but that D game. Yeah, that and a very old Twilight 2000, but thats another story.
Guest cmdrsam Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Wait a minute, you got tatoos, you cant play that D game.

Started off playing for random people who didn't show, but was told to make my own so... I'd be down if you could figure out how to make it work.
GruntMark Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 http://www.6arrows.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/drow.jpg Thats my full contribution. Art or Hate Crime?
djthefunkchris Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 You are all walking by a sign with the words The Dark Forest, and here something not too far ahead. What do you want to do?
mjdgoldeneye Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Thats my full contribution. Art or Hate Crime? He's asian and hilarious so it's ok. You are all walking by a sign with the words The Dark Forest, and here something not too far ahead. What do you want to do? Eat it. Eat the sign. Then eat the forest. I win! I won the game!
djthefunkchris Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Eat it. Eat the sign. Then eat the forest. I win! I won the game! As you bite into the sign, you realise right away that this is not ordinary wood. In fact, this wood has been here for so long that it crumble's straight away, as termites and other insects fall to the ground, and of course your mouth and chin. The trail is leading to the east, but the trail is not well travelled. The sounds you here are however coming from the north.
moon_lit_tears Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 You are all walking by a sign with the words The Dark Forest, and here something not too far ahead. What do you want to do? You shoot a fireball into it of course. How much damage could a fireball do to a forest?.
Irish Wolf Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Right now I run a D&D 3.5 game (I won't touch 4.0 as its basically an over glorified war game and not roleplaying) and I also play in a Pathfinder game. Pathfinder is so much better, its what 3.75 could have been had WotC decided to revise the system again. As for After the Bomb unless there is a new game specifically called that wasn't that the title of one of the post apocalyptic world books used for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG put out by Palladium years ago? All mad max on the US west coast, including souped up cars and everything? There are a lot of great indy games out there if you like. Burning Wheel, Mouse Guard and some of the newer Call of Cthulhu stuff is pretty good.
djthefunkchris Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 You shoot a fireball into it of course. How much damage could a fireball do to a forest?. First off, I must tell you what you know.. There was a "sign" that said "The Dark Forest". You don't see the forest, you don't know where it starts or where it ends. You here something towards the north. The sign on the trail leads to the east. First you have to actually go there, before you can do anything to it.... Fireball or eating it.
mjdgoldeneye Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I recently started being a regular in a D&D game. Started off playing for random people who didn't show, but was told to make my own so... I'd be down if you could figure out how to make it work. Well, we can use the chat feature on my site and then I can probably make a program where we all connect to my IP and see a set of dice we can roll by clicking on them. Or, the GM can just do all dice rolls, but the program idea is way cooler...

Or, the GM can just do all dice rolls, but the program idea is way cooler... That said, if I figure out a comfortable system for Pathfinder (which, for D&D players, would require little learning and, for non-tabletop RPG players, would only require a bit of learning to start, guided by those who know stuff), who would be up for trying this out online? I'll keep a list here: 1. mjdgoldeneye 2. moon_lit_tears
Prophet Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I haven't played D&D in like 10 years. I miss the game. To answer your question, Jaysin, I always found smaller groups of like 4-6 people to be ideal. Enough to get quests done, and have interactions with different characters, yet still small enough that it doesn't sound like a bar during the Superbowl. I can't speak to the other games, though, as I didn't play anything but Dungeons and Dragons, or modified versions we'd make up, such as our Highlander game, where we'd created a chart for sword battles, to determine who would be the last immortal standing.
djthefunkchris Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I used to run them when I was in school. I always liked to play, but our favorite DM wanted me to run some (He was probably a good 8 years older then me at the time). I ran one game, and next thing I knew everyone wanted in (that was in the little gaming ring... It wasn't big. There were about 10 of us all together, that was consistant. I was ussually the DM, and after a while I really started to liking doing it. I remember that I never really wanted to do it, although I wanted to learn how (I had a Ranger character that I grew really found of, so wanted to play it). After a while though, I actually ended up liking being the DM more.
Irish Wolf Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 There are tons of virtual table tops for D&D. With mapping features and Die Rollers. There are some free ones that are decent and some really good pay ones, that if you are the unscrupulous type I'm sure you could find cracked versions of.
Purple Cowboy Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I still play Pendragon from time-to-time, although with everyone either away at college or moved away they are usually short weekend sessions. Also a fan of Heroes/Villains Unlimited although I’ve never really been in an extended campaign. Some decent games being run online at rpol.net, but some of the GMs there are a little too serious about it for my tastes.

C'mon!! @MJ when you figure it out PM me here and let me know. I'd be down for doing this. I downloaded a D&D online game, but it won't load on my computer for some reason..

Personally I love Heroes/Villians/Aliens Unlimited.

I just wanted to play it to play as mutant animals.
mike b Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 OMG People still play D&D table top:eek: And here i was thinking it was all X Box,Play Station Wii and that dance dance game now. I remember when that game came out(D&D) and we were all called mindless zombies or Devil worshipers for playing it.Though now i play Grey Dog software games and i am still called a mindless zombie:( I blame all of you:rolleyes:
crayon Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I've never played D&D, but lately I have been wondering if experiences along those lines could be adapted for online and work with the Mafia crowd we have here at GDS
