jhd1 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I have just bought a new laptop running Windows 7 (upgraded from XP) and I seem to be having a few problems, or at least I think I am. Basically, I am finding that windows updates take forever and a day to install. I had one yesterday that took around 15-20 minutes to install, and it was not a big file by any means. Obviously if I turn the laptop off late in the evening and it needs to do one of these updates I can't afford to leave it (and the plugs) on all night, nor can I stay up and watch it either. I also find that before a program will install it takes a long time to initialise (the install itself is like lightning), although I've seen this being mentioned as a fairly normal issue. Is this a common problem, or am I going to have to get in touch with the manufacturer? Thanks in advance!
Bigpapa42 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I'm running Windows 7 on my desktop and the updates have all been really fast, so far as I've seen. The system is pretty fast, though, so that might make a bit of a difference...?

The system is pretty fast, though, so that might make a bit of a difference...? The PC seems very fast (especially compared to the old laptop) but once I click shut down things take forever and there is little I can do about it. I just tried to install Service Pack 1, it took about two hours and then said it didn't work (I have since followed the instructions on how to fix that specific problem). It's most annoying because when I turn the laptop off I never know how long it will take, and as I said I don't want to leave it on all night... The problem now being, do I try and install Service Pack 1 again and risk wasting another two hours on it!?
Bigpapa42 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I would probably try to get the Service Pack. They usually are pretty important fixes. If you are really leery about the time it took, maybe try doing a search on the Windows help site. They have a ton of info on there and chances are that if you are encountering it, someone else has too.
James Casey Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Like BP, I've noticed a significant increase in speed in terms of updates to 7. I did have a couple of issues with it, but it seems I've finally resolved the main one (and I think the other is hardware, not software). A couple of obvious questions, but are you running as admin? And with High Performance rather than Optimised/Power saver? One other thought: Any problems with your net connection? A slow update to me sounds like it could be a slow download. Is your firewall set up correctly?

Is your firewall set up correctly? Firewall is fine, and I am definitely running as admin. I have just changed the power plan to High Performance (it was on HP Recommended). I have sent an email to HP so I'll see what they say in response. Thanks for the help, James! EDIT: I'm pretty certain that it is nothing to do with the internet connection. The updates download okay, it's when I shut down and the updates begin to install that things start to slow down.
mad5226 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 check your start up folder. Usually if you buy a new laptop it comes preinstalled with a bunch of useless crap that runs in the background and slows down your PC. Clear that of anything that isn't useful then see if it helps
