1234 Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Got an annoying problem that I cant seem to come up with a solution for, most likely because there isnt one, so thought I would ask if anyone here could help. I am trying to figure out how to stream from my laptop (not just video/music files, whatever is on the screen) to my TV. My problem is I recently found out my TV doesnt have a HDMI port, so cannot use that. My laptop has HDMI ports, a VGA port and of course USB ports. My tv has DVI, VGA (I think), Scart & Component video inputs. I also have a PS3 and Ipad but as far as I am aware the stream cannot be run through them well. Is there any cheap way to connect the two? I know I could use somethink like the Imation Link or a HDMI to Scart converter, but since my tv is small I may as well buy a new TV with a HDMI input. I tried running my laptop through my Ipad and then putting the Ipad to the TV but the connection was too slow. Anyone got ideas?

You could always borrow the lead from that (that's how I tested mine) just to check it works as you want it to. Otherwise you can get a lead for a couple of quid from Amazon. EDIT: Looks like you can even get VGA to scart, or VGA to DVI if your TV doesn't have a VGA port.
masterded Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 What JHD1 said and if it turns out you don't have a VGA on your tv a VGA to component cable cost about $5.

As far as I am aware VGA doesnt support sound, or am I wrong? Edit- Guessing my TV will have an input for it so should I be able to use something like This in conjunction? If so is the quality of VGA generally good?

I would imagine so, yes, and for 99p if it doesn't work you're not bankrupting yourself. I didn't try sound with my VGA cable, but I am almost certain that you are correct about it not working. The VGA image quality was absolutely fine on my TV, although you might have to mess around with the resolution.
20LEgend Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 I have mine connected with the vga and the sound cable you are looking at and it works great for me.
1234 Posted April 2, 2011 Author Posted April 2, 2011 Cheers guys. Spent ages today trying to work out how to do this. Now lets just hope I am right about having a VGA input on my TV Edit- And bonus, I wont have to buy seperate cables because I found this
