OOC:

This diary takes place nearly one year after the game start date using the NHB 1989 data. All credit goes to the mod maker(s) and image creator(s) that have been used. I have taken a slightly different approach to how I see my roster. Instead of Main Eventers, Upper Midcarders, Midcarders etc. that are standard in the game, I see my roster as ‘World Heavyweight Championship Contenders’, 'TV Title Contenders’, 'Tag Team Title Contenders’ or even perhaps a mixture. This for me has made and is making the booking easier for this era. I must also add that some characters used are a little before their time perhaps (due to early pushes but nothing more e.g. early debut’s or editing) but I have taken ultimate pleasure in playing this game and I hope you enjoy reading it and hopefully get involved where you see fit.

Roster details and current Champions will follow.

The Story So Far…

For the past year, the AWA has been riding a big wave of momentum. The company has been able to successfully invest in a youthful roster while at the same time being able to keep the useful members of the more experienced stars being able to provide a product many fans can get into.

While Larry Zbyszko had a long, successful run as AWA World Heavyweight Champion, a loss to Ricky Steamboat and an unsuccessful re-match meant that Steamboat was now the main man and is now feuding with a new star, the fearsome Undertaker, who has dominated his opponents over the year beating the likes of Sgt. Slaughter, Barry Windham and ending the AWA career of Jimmy Snuka. Back in April of 1990, it was Ricky Steamboat and The Undertaker who put on a match which was voted the greatest in AWA history and they don’t appear that they are stop any time soon.

Another break out star from the past year is Steve Austin who is currently undergoing a feud with Barry Windham over their stance in wrestling. Austin debuted by insulting the more ‘traditional’ wrestling stars. Almost ending the career or Wahoo McDaniel and Chavo Guerrero. It was finally Barry Windham who took a stand to Austin and the two have had some hellacious matches throughout the year.

The AWA TV Title has changed hands a several times over the past year before finally settling with Chris Benoit who has been the most successful champion since the title’s creation in 1988. Benoit proved his worth by defeating Larry Zbyszko in one of the AWA’s greatest ever bouts to successfully defend the title. The biggest threat to Benoit’s reign thus far however, is the current threat of Bam Bam Bigelow, but the race for the title also includes stars such as Jerry Lawler, Sgt. Slaughter and several other major stars.

The Tag Team division has also had a major shake up, with teams such as The British Bulldogs, who are the current AWA Tag Team Champions, The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, The Russians (Ivan Koloff & Nikita Koloff), The Freebirds (Terry Gordy & Jim Garvin) and many other top teams all competing for the tag gold.

It is not only the talent that is promising in the AWA. PPV Carriers Closed Circuit U.S., Canada Direct and Public Access PPV UK have all agreed PPV deals, this has allowed the AWA to increase the PPV quantity from 2 a year to 14, the existing ‘SuperClash’ and ‘Rage In A Cage’ shows have been joined by the monthly ‘American Showdown’ series which is about to have it’s 12th incarnation. Also, to add to the existing weekly episodic programme on ESPN entitled ‘AWA All Star Wrestling’, the AWA also agreed a deal with Bravo to air ‘AWA Collision’ in both the U.S. and Canada starting September 1990.

The future certainly looks bright for the company and nobody will want to miss the ride!

Chris Benoit vs. Stan Hansen

Huge Stan Hansen fan going back to his run in the NWA/WCW

Solid show there mate loved the words Steamboat had for Undertaker about signing his own death warrant and really would like to see Steambot eventually come out on top, taker has plenty more days in the sun later on i feel whereas a long reign for Steamboat could be good for him at this stage.

Predos

Zbyszko to beat JL

Bam Bam over Garvin

Benoit over Hansen as i feel he could do with the rub to really cement his champion status there.

Posted

Jerry Lynn vs. Larry Zbyszko

As stated above, no way Jerry gets the win... If he does, blasphemy.

As rugged as Ronnie might be, he's not Bam Bam.

Announcers: Lance Russell, Eric Bischoff & ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham

Eric Bischoff is backstage with the AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ricky Steamboat. He is questioning him about the heinous attack last week from The Undertaker. Not only backstage, but also during Steamboat’s match with Bam Bam Bigelow, Steamboat’s last match before American Showdown 12. Bischoff reminds Steamboat that The Undertaker hit him with a Tombstone Pile Driver on a steel chair. Many think that The Undertaker will now have the mental and physical advantage.

Ricky Steamboat responds by telling Bischoff that he has had enough. That The Undertaker has no respect for the sport by interfering in another man’s match. Steamboat continues by stating that he seen this act of disrespect occur way too much in the AWA recently, reminding us that also last week Steve Austin interfered in Barry Windham’s match and the week before Jerry Lawler cost Sgt. Slaughter a victory in his match and finally, The Rougeau’s unlawfully entered The British Bulldog’s match. Steamboat then issues a 5 on 5 challenge later tonight; himself, Barry Windham, Sgt. Slaughter and The British Bulldog’s against The Undertaker, Steve Austin, Jerry Lawler and The Rougeau’s. Ricky Steamboat finally adds that it is not the reaper he will need to ask for forgiveness, it will be him.

Match 1

Jerry Lynn vs. Larry Zbyszko

A very solid opening match considering there was always going to be one winner, the main shock being the match lasted as long as it did. Zbyszko took the pin fall after 10 minutes

Winner: Larry Zbyszko at 10:32 via pin fall

Eric Bischoff is questioning Bam Bam Bigelow about his match last week against Ricky Steamboat. Bigelow stops Bischoff in his tracks and declared that it made no difference if The Undertaker interfered in his match or not, he had Steamboat in the palm of his hand. Eric Bischoff is standing nervously between Steve Austin and The Undertaker who will be teaming with Jerry Lawler and The Rougeau Brother’s next against the team of Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham, Sgt. Slaughter and The British Bulldog’s. The match was made by Steamboat due to his disgust with the disrespect shown by their team members tonight.

Steve Austin grabs the mic and addresses Ricky Steamboat's ‘admirable’ speech he made earlier but regardless how high his morale high ground is, he still gets his ass whipped by The Undertaker, much the same fate as Barry Windham. Austin then describes in great detail the beatings he has given Windham and tomorrow night at American Showdown 12, he will beat him down so badly he doesn’t get back up as they will be having a Last Man Standing Match.

The Undertaker then takes the microphone with Paul Bearer by his side eerily caressing a golden urn. The Undertaker states that not many words are needed to describe the destruction that he will deliver to Ricky Steamboat. He goes onto say that tonight is a mere drop in the ocean compared to what he will do to Steamboat tomorrow night.

Match 5 (Main Event)

Ricky Steamboat, The British Bulldog’s, Barry Windham & Sgt Slaughter

vs.

The Undertaker, The Rougeau Brothers, Steve Austin & Jerry Lawler

A somewhat disappointing main event saw many foes go at it. Sgt. Slaughter and Jerry Lawler started the match to heat up their rivalry. We then saw The British Bulldog’s and The Rougeau Brothers brawl outside the ring while Steve Austin and Barry Windham fought inside, Austin busting Windham open after hitting his head off an exposed turnbuckle. Finally we saw Ricky Steamboat and The Undertaker stand toe to toe but the brawl was short lived as all 10 men got into the ring. The referee ultimately lost control and called for a double DQ.

Eric Bischoff, Lance Russell and ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham welcome us to the much-anticipated American Showdown 12. The relay the card back to us before being kicked off with the music of Jerry Lynn.

*

Match 1

Larry Zbyszko vs. Jerry Lynn

Jerry Lynn appeared to give a lot more offence at the bigger stage than he did the last time he met Larry Zbyszko. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough as Zbyszko showed his technical prowess once more, taking the pin fall.

Winner: Larry Zbyszko at 12:02 via pin fall

78 B

*

Eric Bischoff grabs a quick word after the match with Larry Zbyszko to congratulate him on another impressive victory tonight but was interrupted by ‘The Living Legend’. Larry Zbyszko rhetorically asks Eric, how long have they known each other? A way to make his point that he has had one of the longest durations as AWA World Heavyweight Champion in the company’s history. He goes on to say that to go from that level to opening a show against a ‘Johnny Come Lately’, a show he should be Main Eventing, is a complete miscarriage of justice. By the end of the interview Zbyszko promises his name will be a name etched once again in the minds of all wrestling fans across the world.

84 B+

*

Eric Bischoff is left at the entranceway after Larry Zbyszko arrogantly walked towards the back. Seconds later, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler makes his way to the ring ahead of his match with Sgt. Slaughter. Lawler decrees, on reminiscing Ricky Steamboat’s words, that he does not disrespect for the business he disrespects Sgt. Slaughter and right now the whole world will see why.

88 B+

*

Match 2

Jerry Lawler vs. Sgt. Slaughter

A match that garnered a lot of heat from the crowd saw Jerry Lawler show much consistency in using underhanded tactics from beginning to end. Eye-gouges, handfuls of tights and exposed turnbuckles all used throughout. Had Lawler however been more focused on the match and not flaunting to the crowd, he may have been able to capitalise. The character and determination of Sgt. Slaughter shone through as he got Lawler in the Camel Clutch, forcing ‘The King’ to tap.

Winner: Sgt. Slaughter at 13:03 via submission

80 B

*

Match 3

AWA Tag Team Titles

The British Bulldog’s © vs. The Rougeau Brothers

The rivalry continued in this match. The Dynamite Kid getting taken out early in the game meaning much of the match was a 2-on-1 with Davey Boy Smith taking a beating. After Dynamite got himself back up to the apron and a few more minutes beat down by the Rougeau’s onto Davey Boy meant he was hungry for the tag. Finally, the tag was made and Dynamite was able to capitalise, letting the Rougeu’s take it in turns to get knocked down before Davey Boy could get back to his feet, a quick double team and that’s all she wrote. The celebration by The Bulldog’s was short-lived unfortunately due to a cheap shot from the Rougeau’s after the match. The focal point however is that the titles didn’t change hands.

Winners and still AWA Tag Team Champions: The British Bulldog’s at 13:52 via pin fall

79 B

Eric Bischoff is backstage with a very smug Steve Austin. Bischoff reminds us that last night Austin challenged Barry Windham to a Last Man Standing match here tonight, a match he can confirm has been accepted. Bischoff tells Austin that he has his wish. Austin looks to the ground with a grin on his face, as he raises his head, he tells Windham that he had made the biggest mistake of his life and after he has beaten him until he can’t get back up he will put him and the ‘traditional ‘ wrestling crap to rest once and for all. Austin declares that he is the man of a new era for the AWA and the fact ‘Austin and Windham’ are even mentioned in the same breathe disgusts him.

Match 4

Last Man Standing

Steve Austin vs. Barry Windham

A truly brutal match that was only in the ring for a matter of moments before both men decided that in order to keep the other down and went to get aide from a foreign object. After a total of 24 chair shots received by both men and 2 tables being smashed, Steve Austin managed to hit the Stun Gun and then tie the groggy Barry Windham down using the electrical wiring, momentarily taking out the lights in the arena. When Windham came to at the count of 6, he couldn’t get up to answer then 10 count, and standing a top, taunting him, was Austin who was declared the winner.

Winner: Steve Austin at 22:40 via opponent unable to answer the 10 count

81 B

*

Match 5

AWA TV Title

Chris Benoit © vs. Bam Bam Bigelow

Bam Bam Bigelow went into this match thinking there was only going to be one outcome. Chris Benoit went into this match full of determination. The clash of styles made for a great bout; Bam Bam using his mass and strength to wear Benoit down, who in turn tried to take the big man down at the base in order to exploit his mat work. Bam Bam at times looked like he was enjoying the match until he was actually taken to ground and got more and more irritated letting himself make mistakes. This let Benoit capitalise, and score a pin fall leaving Bigelow stunned.

Winner and still AWA TV Champion: Chris Benoit at 20:25 via pin fall

Eric Bischoff is joined by The Undertaker, he informs him that no-one has seen or heard of Ricky Steamboat all evening and asks him if he thinks Steamboat is trying to get into his head. The Undertaker denies any chance of Ricky Steamboat playing mind games as he put’s too much trust in honouring your opponent and playing by the rules. Which is exactly why he will lose tonight, he focuses too much on the technicalities that he forgets the repercussions of messing with the dark side. Undertaker adds that the repercussions of tonight will be himself declared the new AWA World Heavyweight Champion and his reign over the AWA will begin.

Match 6 (Main Event)

AWA World Heavyweight Championship

Ricky Steamboat © vs. The Undertaker

Could be a contender for one of AWA’s greatest ever matches, the technical prowess of Ricky Steamboat and the brutality of The Undertaker were both on show in this spectacle. The Undertaker was able to capitalise after many choke holds in the corner of the ring, wearing Steamboat down after he was struggling to breathe. Although there was no direct interference from Paul Bearer, he did manage to distract the referee throughout to make sure that his Undertaker stayed the more dominant. The turning point in the match came when Steamboat tried to expose a turnbuckle distracting the referee so he could wave down Sgt. Slaughter, Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid. The three men all jumped onto the apron while Steamboat grabbed a chair straight onto the back of The Undertaker. The referee saw this and looked stunned. He ended the match, awarding it to The Undertaker.

Winner: The Undertaker at 26:21 via DQ

95 A

As The Undertaker walks to the back with Paul Bearer, a sickening grim face shows he is very disappointed with the result. Ricky Steamboat tells him that he has Sgt. Slaughter and The British Bulldogs as back up. If The Undertaker were to try and disrespect the match then so would he. Steamboat said that he had not been quiet all night, he had not been playing mind games, he was building up his back up plan. Steamboat ends by saying that if The Undertaker just tried to go one-on-one instead of trying to underhand then the result could have been different, now he knows how it feels. The Undertaker is disgusted as he stares at Ricky Steamboat holding the AWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Lance Russell, Eric Bischoff and ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham close the show by reminding fans that as of next week All Star Wrestling has been moved to Sunday’s, meaning that the next show will be the very first wiring of AWA Collision on Wednesday

Eric Bischoff welcomes the fans to the first ever AWA Collision. The AWA’s first television show to be aired in all of the USA and also the whole of Canada, truly a monumental milestone for one of the brightest companies in professional wrestling.. Bischoff reminds the AWA fans though that Rage In A Cage is a week away. Joined by Bischoff is the current reigning AWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ricky Steamboat. Bischoff gets straight to the point, Steamboat came out of his match last week at American Showdown 12 with The Undertaker still World Champion. He also gave Undertaker a taste of his own medicine by way of outside interference.

Ricky Steamboat states it was a truly great moment for him and all of the AWA to retain the AWA World Heavyweight Championship. Not only that, Undertaker also got his just desserts. Steamboat explains the Undertaker has every chance throughout the match not to disrespect his opponent or the sport by cheating. Steamboat appreciates that he had to do something underhanded himself to prove his point, something he will never do again if he can help if and concludes that had it not been for Undertaker’s actions, they could have fought with pride and honour.

Match 1

The British Bulldog’s vs. Steve Austin & Bam Bam Bigelow

It was hard to contain the ego of Austin throughout the match, clearly on a high after defeating Barry Windham last week. It showed in his performance as he brought his A-game. Bam Bam Bigelow looked just as dangerous as went out to seek retribution from his lost to Chris Benoit. The British Bulldog’s did manage to get in their own offence, as much as you would expect from the AWA Tag Team Champions. However, when Jacques Rougeau distracted the referee, allowing Raymond Rougueau to hand Steve Austin a chair to use on Davey Boy Smith, the match was all but over. Bam Bam Bigelow delivered a Flying Headbutt to finish it off.

Winners: Steve Austin & Bam Bam Bigelow at 15:43 via pin fall

Eric Bischoff steps into the ring to speak to Steve Austin and Bam Bam Bigelow. Steve Austin tells him to step back before he slaps the taste out of his mouth and knock him out cold like he did Barry Windham. He continues by brushing off the AWA Tag Team Champions by claiming they are a mere stepping stone to greater things and warns Ricky Steamboat not to get preoccupied by The Undertaker because he his gunning for his ass! Bam Bam Bigelow then barks down the mic that Chris Benoit got lucky in their match last week at American Showdown 12 and by doing so he shocked the world, on a normal day that would never happen. He then adds that Benoit isn’t going to keep the AWA TV Title for long! Steve Austin then closes by adding that this new ‘fresh start’ for the AWA means there should be a ‘fresh champion’. It’s time Ricky Steamboat stepped aside.

Match 2

Jimmy Garvin vs. Tatanka

Jimmy Garvin had his fellow freebird, the huge Terry Gordy in his corner during the match. The situation maybe proved too much for the ‘Native American’ Tatanka as after 7 minutes, Garvin was able to hit the Brainbuster DDT for the pin.

Winner: Jimmy Garvin at 7:33 via pin fall

Eric Bischoff is backstage with Larry Zbyszko who is about to go out against Ronnie Garvin. He questions the ‘Living Legend’ about American Showdown 12, after beating Jerry Lynn he demanded to get more respect by being put in bigger matches. Larry Zbyszko says he knows Steve Austin has already threatened him tonight for asking stupid questions with good cause. Zabyszko proclaims himself as the most talented man in the AWA and also as having one of the greatest reigns as AWA World Heavyweight Champion. Zbyszko ends by saying it were him against Ricky Steamboat at American Showdown 12, he would be standing there right now as champion.

Match 3

Larry Zbyszko VS. Ronne Garvin

Standing outside the ring was the mighty Zeus, with a maniacal look on his face throughout the match; any opponent would feel an overwhelming amount of intimidation here. Larry Zbyszko continued to look in good shape during the match taking it to Ronnie Garvin and working the crowd to an abundance of ‘boo’s’. Garvin had a good fight back but couldn’t fully capitalise. Zbyszko took the win around 12 minutes in.

Winner: Larry Zbyszko at 12:47 via pin fall

After the match, Larry Zbyszko calls Zeus into the ring to and the two give Ronnie Garvin a hellacious beating. Referees and members of the backstage crew try to hold them back but to no avail. From nowhere, Stan Hansen runs into the ring, bull rope in hand. He charges straight at Larry Zbyszko, knocking out of the ring. He turns to Zeus who doesn’t flinch; Zbyszko then gets back into the ring to pull Zeus out leaving Hansen to attend to Ronnie Garvin.

Match 4

Chris Benoit vs. Jerry Lawler

A re-match from AWA All Star Wrestling two weeks ago saw much the same result. Chris Benoit proving once again why he is the AWA TV Champion. The crowd were behind him the whole way. After he was made to tap out and left the ring, Lawler started walking back up the aisle but was met by Sgt. Slaughter the two stared each other down, Slaughter with a grin on his face. Before anything could boil over, several referees intervened.

Winner: Chris Benoit at 17:43 via submission

Match 5 (Main Event)

The Undertaker vs. Sgt. Slaughter

Sgt. Slaughter started this match in high spirits after witnessing his foe, Jerry Lawler lose to Chris Benoit moments ago. Maybe this distracted him or he just couldn’t give enough to defeat the awesome Undertaker, who showed his dominance once more, ending the match with a Tombstone Piledriver.

Winner: The Undertaker at 21:35 via pin fall

The Undertaker rolls Sgt Slaughter out of the ring, pushing him with his feet. Paul Bearer then enters the ring clutching and caressing the gloomy, golden urn. The Undertaker challenges Ricky Steamboat so they can go at it face-to-face, one-on-one. Ricky Steamboat makes his way to the ring and says that although The Undertaker doesn’t deserve a fair fight he is never one to turn down a challenge. The two brawl but neither is able to get a clear advantage, the referee’s and backstage crew earning their pay once more tonight by breaking up the brawl.

Lance Russell, Eric Bischoff and ‘Superstar’ Billy Graham are describing the mayhem in the ring but still have time to let the fans know that Sgt. Slaughter may have better luck on Sunday at All Star Wrestling as he takes on ‘Dirty’ Dick Murdoch. In a match that has just been added; Stan Hansen & Ronnie Garvin will take on The Heat (Doug Furnas & Jimmy Del Ray). Chris Benoit will be defending his AWA TV Title against the dangerous Buzz Sawyer. Larry Zbyszko will take on a returning Barry Windham, and Steve Austin is going to go up against Ricky Steamboat in the main event. Also two cages matches will be announced for Tuesday’s Rage In A Cage PPV.
