4 Corners of Chaos: AWA

Recommended Posts

It's september 1995 and WCW are about to debut their new flagship TV show, Monday Nitro, which is to go head to head against WWF's Monday Night Raw. This should be the single biggest story in wrestling right now... but it's not.

Behind the scenes, in the months leading to this big event, was something even bigger in the making... unhappy with some, according to the wrestlers involved, unreasonable and inhuman terms in their contracts, a large group of wrestlers from both top American companies, WWF and WCW, joined forces and sued their employers. And a few weeks before the highly anticipated debut of Nitro a decision was made on their case, a decision that shocked the entire world of wrestling and sent ripples across all of USA... a decision that from one day to the next has changed the wrestling business forever; all workers signed to written contracts with either WWF or WCW, be it wrestlers, managers, announcers, referees, road agents or something else, were declared as free agents, with their contracts being declared illegal and void! Furthermore, also as part of the lawsuit, it was determined that no company could hold copyright over names used by their performers - meaning that characters and tag team names now follows the wrestlers, not the promotions!

Suddenly being without a single employee, WWF and WCW now faced competition from not only each other but from other sides as well: having closely followed the trial, lurking prepared to strike in the shadows in hope that the trial would end the way it did, former American Wrestling Association owner and multiple-time world champion Verne Gagne returned to the wrestling business with new investors, re-establishing AWA and gunning for several former WWF and WCW stars! But he was not alone, as Jeff Jarrett, son of United States Wrestling Association owner Jerry Jarrett, launched an ambitious promotion of his own, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. With his father Jerry closing doors on USWA, the two were ready to put all their focus and funds into TNA.

The age of Four Corners of Chaos has begun...

This is a 4-player multiplayer game starring:

JackKnifed72 as WWF

Big Al as WCW

Rick Savant as AWA

and Hive as TNA

Hector Blake, AWA beat reporter for The Wrestling World Analyst, is outside of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa where in excess of 7000 wrestling enthusiasts are expected to show up for the inaugural AWA All-Star Wrestling broadcast. He has said lips are sealed in the AWA camp and future plans are being closely guarded. But despite that he has a few pieces of information to pass along.

Firstly, the general consensus from sources inside of that American Wrestling Association is that plans for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship will be revealed tonight, but that the Tag Team, Lightheavyweight and Women's championships will be dealt with one at a time over the coming months. There are currently no women under contract for the AWA.

There has been rumours of some conflict backstage between owner Verne Gagne and new head booker Rick Savant as to the direction of the company. Sources say that Rick was selected to act as a self imposed counter balance to Verne's conservative approach to the wrestling business and that the two have already clashed on the subject of incorporating aspects of Lucha Libre into the product. The two are reportedly still on good terms but Savant has shown signs of frustration.

Further aggravating those frustrations are the severity of the condition of Curt Hennig. Although no clear information has surfaced, it appears the extent of his injuries are far greater than initially thought and Gagne is rather unimpressed with his new booker/general manager for selecting the injured athlete so high in the draft. Savant, in turn, has stated that in conversations with Hennig that the extent of his injuries were downplayed.

And finally, although nothing has been declared from the offices of the AWA, posters advertising tonight's event around Des Moines were promoting a tag bout between The Hart Brothers, Bret and Owen against Scott Hall and the legendary Terry Funk.

We start out with Lord Alfred Hayes welcoming us to the AWA's All-Star Wrestling. Hayes introduces us to his broadcast colleagues Dusty Rhodes and Curt Hennig. Dusty busts in, unable to control himself any longer and he tells us that we have an amazing main event here tonight as the Hart Brothers will team against Scott Hall and the legendary Terry Funk. Curt Hennig says he can't understand a word either of those two said, but he knows this: The AWA World heavyweight Championship will be decided in 3 weeks at AWA Regenesis! There will be a sixteen man four round tournament held to crown the new champion. Wrestlers will be signing up over the course of the broadcast and seeding will be randomly drawn on the night of Regenesis. It looks to be a night which will go down in the annuls of wrestling history.

C

Lord Alfred takes us to the ring for...

******************

Los Trapacistas

vs

The Steiner Brothers

******************

The Steiners become the first wrestlers to walk out from behind the new AWA curtains and head to the ring to a strong ovation. Out next are Juvi and Dion.

Hennig “Now you two probably don't know this because you've never researched anything but hamburgers and gravy before but these two men are very, very handsome men. They wear those masks to prevent themselves from being torn to shreds by the women in the audience.”

LAH “That is simply untrue.”

Hennig “It is true. They told me themselves.”

Dusty “I love me a hambuga. It's true.”

The match it's self is an explosive and fast paced one ending with Rick Steiner pinning Juventud Guerrera after a Steinerizer at the 7:10 mark.

WINNERS: The Steiner Brothers

C+

***************************

Chavo Guerrero II

vs

'The Silver King' Cesar Barron

***************************

Both men look focused and proud in this one. Barron stalls for most of the match and Hennig explains that a King should not have to step into the the ring with someone as untrustworthy as a Guerrero. Let a lone a Silver King. Dusty puts over the Guerreros and their long tradition of being good at wrestling. Eventually Silver King gets in the ring and has Chavo so off his game he is able to catch him with a roll up after 5:59.

WINNER: 'The Silver King' Cesar Barron

C-

Next a video is shown with three men talking about 'The Ultimo Dragon' Yoshihiro Asai.

Bret Hart “You know, I'm an international star myself so I've seen guys all over the world. And no matter where I work Asai has turned up and he's turned heads every single time.”

Curt Hennig “Look there may be one wrestler in this world who can go toe to toe with me on a consistent basis. And that would be Yoshihiro Asai.”

Dusty Rhodes “This man, he does things. This man he does things in the ring that no man should ever be able to do. He will mezmemorize you. You will want to take your own eyes out of your head and ask them: Eyes, is what you are telling me, is it correct?”

C-

***********************

Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow

vs

Rey Misterio Jr

***********************

A surprisingly even affair with Rey escaping Bam Bam's grasp for much of the mask and employing a hit and run tactic. Eventually he is slowed by a few glancing blows and the tide turns. He is eventually put away with a sidewalk slam at 7:52.

WINNER: Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow

B-

Mean Gene Okerlund is backstage with Bret and Owen Hart. They talk about the respect they have for Terry Funk and Scott Hall. They talk about about the respect they have for the AWA and what it means to main event the first All-Star Wrestling.

C+

***************

D. John Finlay

vs

The White Ninja

***************

Finlay squashes the masked man in 2:54.

WINNER: D. John Finlay

D

****************************

The Samoan Swat Team

vs

Lance Storm and Rob Van Dam

****************************

Samula just throws Lance and Rob around for the first portion of the match but the team of Storm and Van Dam get a bit of offence on Solafa. His power is too much for them however and he and Anoa'i manage to start frequent tags and eventually they hit the double diving headbutt on RVD for the W-I-N.

WINNERS: The Samoan Swat Team

C-

Next up Jim Cornette is out with a microphone. He tells us how bad and now mean his client is... Perry Saturn!

D+

************

Perry Saturn

vs

The Mirror

************

Saturns opponent is a man in a silver mask whom Dusty informs us has the ability to mimic the fighting style of any of his opponents. The Mirror does a decen impression of Saturns skulking to the ring before being suplexed to oblivion and made to tap out the Rings of Saturn after only 3:45.

WINNER: Perry Saturn

E+

**************

Ron Simmons

vs

Dustin Rhodes

**************

An open back and forth, hard brawling affair that eventually sees Ron Simmons hit the Dominator and score the pin in the middle of the ring after 7:56.

WINNER: Ron Simmons

C+

Afterwards Dustin Rhodes is shocked. And he continues to look around embarrassed and angry after Simmons has left. He gives an ashamed look towards his father on commentary as Dusty says he's proud of the effort his son put in.

C+

Mean Gene is in the back with Scott Hall and Terry Funk. Hall says he's going to carve up the Harts and Funk stops his. Funk says he's not in Atlanta anymore. This is the AWA, and in the AWA we do things differently. Tonight we are going to beat the Harts but we're going to beat them with respect.

C+

***********************

The Hart Foundation

vs

Terry Funk and Scott Hall

***********************

The match starts with a handshake between Funk and the Harts. Hall has to be convinced but Funk puts his hand on Scotts shoulder and make him see the light. The match starts slowly with both teams tagging in and out frequently. For the most part a technical affair, Hall occasionally loses his temper and Funk has to talk him down to avoid disqualification or shame. As the match passes the twenty minute mark Hall's mean streak is starting to show up more and more behind Terry's back. Eventually while Terry inadvertently distracts the referee while arguing about a tag the official did not see Scott Hall wraps Owen's knee around the ring post twice. Bret is furious and when Hall is back in the ring he attacks Hall from behind. Funk is in the ring to protect his partner not knowing what he did and it turns into an all out brawl. Eventually the official gets control and Hall goes ballistic on the hurt Owen Hart. Funk tags himself in to stop Hall from disgracing them and while he convinces Hall to return to his corner Owen tags in Bret. Funk turns right into a small package and is pinned for the three.

WINNERS: The Hart Foundation!

B+

Hall had been walking back to his corner as Funk had told him to so he didn't see the pin. Hall is furious! He's kicking the ropes and stomping and yelling and arguing at the official. Funk is just looking off into the crowd while the Harts celebrate. Funk up now he tries to calm down Hall and although it's clearly hard for him he approaches Bret. He extend his hand...

.

.

.

And Bret accepts!

Suckerpunch by Funk! It was a left handed handshake and Bret goes down! The Texan is on top of Bret firing away. Owen tries to pull Funk off but Scott Hall levels him from behind! Hall beats down Owen as Funk takes Bret apart as we are out of time here this has been AWA All-Star Wrestling!

News and Notes from backstage at AWA All-Star Wrestling by Hector Blake.

-The first AWA televised show went pretty well in front of the cameras, but behind the scenes it almost all fell part. Owner Verne Gagne, feeling that Bret Hart had taken it for granted that he was the star of the Gagne's company, took it upon himself to bring the former World Champion down a peg. Or 10 as observers attested that Gagne made a huge display of ridiculing Hart in front of the whole locker room. It seems as though Bret was about to walk out on the company without ever wrestling a match when booker Rick Savant, what has been butting heads with Gagne, stepped in and told him that if Gagne didn't get his head in order that Savant would do everything in his power to seize this company from him, and failing that, would seek work elsewhere. It is reported he told Gagne this was his last chance. Shockingly Gagne sobered up, admitted he was wrong. Apologized to Bret Hart and everything went smoothly from there. A very close call indeed however.

-The overall reaction backstage to the show seems to have been very positive.

-One notable absence, not only from the television screen, but even from the backstage area was Carlos Konnan. No word on what that situation is but reports have him not even in the country at the current time.

-The first four participants in the AWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament have been announced. Unsurprisingly they are the four men who main evented All-Star Wrestling: Terry Funk, Scott Hall, Bret and Owen Hart.

-It was also revealed that the main event of next week's All-Star Wrestling will feature The Hart Foundation vs The Miracle Violence Connection: "Bam Bam" Terry Gordy and Scott "Bam Bam" Bigelow.

Several signings have taken place within the AWA.

Probably the biggest name is the son of the legendary "King" Jerry Lawler, Brian Lawler.

Also, it has been confirmed that young Chris Kanyon has brought into the fold of the organization.

Word is that another signing has been made but details are not forth coming as the higher ups in the AWA want the debut to be a surprise.

There has also been concern as to over crowding on the roster with some within the organization pushing to halt any more talent from being brought in at this time.

Emanating from the Lake Charles Civic Center, Live on ESPN it's...

AWA presents All-Star Wrestling

Applause is heard as the cameras pan around the arena and we cut to Lord Alfred Hayes and Dusty Rhodes for the introduction...

.

NO! That's not Dusty Rhodes... it's Dustin Rhodes.

LAH “H-Hello... I'm Lord Alfred Hayes and I'm joined by my usual broadcast partner Dusty Rhode's son... Dustin Rhodes.”

“Is that all I am to you? Dusty Rhode's son?” Dustin stares down Lord Alfred as the elderly announcer tries to change the subject.

“Tonight we have on heck of a main event as The Hart Foundation, the brothers Bret and Owen Hart, who were victorious last week, will meet two dangerous men this time around, “Bam Bam” Terry Gordy and Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow... The Miracle Violence Connection. An exciting bout isn't that right Dustin?”

Dustin just stares down at Hayes.

“Also the first four men have been announced for the AWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament that will take place at Regenesis... The Hart Brothers as well their opponents last week Scott Hall and Terry Funk. Uh-D-Dustin Rhodes... will you be taking part in the World Heavyweight Title Tournament as well?”

Dustin grabs Hayes wrist and there's a moment where it looks like violence will break out. But it does not. “Yes.” Is all Dustin says and he shoves Hayes hand and the microphone away. He walks off to the back.

LAH “Th-there you have it. Dustin Rhodes is the fifth man to enter the sixteen man, four round World Heavyweight Title Tournament.”

B-

Lord Alfred joins Hennig and Dusty Rhodes as the announce position.

Hennig is laughing. “I thought he was going to punch your lights out Hayes!”

LAH “As did I. I was supposed to be doing that segment with you Dusty. Not your son.”

Dusty “I know. I know that that is the truth, and I meant to be there but I saw him step out from the back and I saw, I saw it so very clearly, that look in his eye. I have seen it before and I know, as only a father can know, that when he gets that look in your eye you must stand aside and simply wait for him to calm down.”

LAH “You left me to the wolves is what you did, sir. But The Mirror is already in the ring.”

***********

The Mirror

vs

Terry Funk

***********

Terry Funk laughs at the antics of The Mirror but underneath he seems as though he's having a hard time controlling his anger. It shines through when he slaps on a vicious armbar and claims the victory. At first he doesn't want to let go, but his senses come to him when the official threatens to reverse the decision and he releases the hold, apologizing to the ref.

Winner: Terry Funk

The crowd was hot, but already burnt out from an apparently amazing pre-show. Match time 5:49.

B

After the match Terry asks for a microphone and is given one.

Funk “Bret... Bret Hart, last week I lost my composure after a very, very frustrating loss. And I wanted to tell you to your face that I am sorry. That I apologize for my actions last week. I've been spoken to by Verne Gagne and the match making committee and I told them what I'm telling you now: What happened last week was not Terry Funk. It's not who I am. And Bret, I'm asking you now to come out here and shake my hand.

Shortly Bret Hart steps from the back with a microphone. He does not leave the curtain area.

Bret “You know, Terry... I've been in this business a long time. And I've heard a lot of guys say a lot of things. And I want you to no it is with from that reservoir of knowledge that I am drawing when I say I don't believe a stinking word that comes out of your mouth. I shook your hand once and it got me an ass kicking. So, no, Terry. I'm not going to walk down there into whatever trap you've laid. I'm going to put this microphone down and prepare for my match.”

And he does just that. Terry Funk can be heard crying out to Bret, “Please, please...” as we fade to commercial.

This segment was a bit too short.

A

We return from commercial and Mean Gene Okerlund is in the back with Dustin Rhodes.

Mean Gene asks him what that outburst earlier was all about.

Rhodes “My whole life I've had to live up to my daddy.” Rhodes explains. “And my daddy isn't some nobody drunk like your daddy, Gene. My daddy is Dusty Rhodes. The American Dream it's self. Last week I had my shoulders pinned on the mat right out there. With him feet away and I could feel it. I could feel the disappointment as if it was a physical thing. I could have picked it up and put it in my pocket.”

Dusty goes on to explain he doesn't deserve that. That he doesn't deserve to be treated like a failure. And if that's how his father and how the AWA is going to treat him. He doesn't see any reason why he should be here.

The crowd was hot for this one!

B-

*********************

Lance Storm

vs

Dionne 'Psichosis' Torres

*********************

A slow technical match with lots of stalling by Torres. Eventually when they get into it there's some fine chain wrestling on display for the finish which sees Lance roll through for a single leg crab submission.

Winner: Lance Storm

This match was poorly placed. The crowd was hot but it cooled them down some. Match time 5:05

C-

We cut to the back where Dustin Rhodes has his bags packed. He walks out the back door of the arena.

Dusty “Just let him go. Sometimes a man has to take some time to himself to sort out his affairs.”

B+

*******************************

The Samoan Swat Team

vs

Rob Van Dam and The White Ninja

*******************************

More or less a squash that sees Solafa pin the White Ninja after a diving headbutt.

LAH “These Samoans are simply devastating.”

Curt Hennig “Yeah, but think about how much harder they'd fight if you let them eat their opponents afterwards!”

Dusty “That is slander. My good man. Slander.”

Winners: The Samoan Swat Team

The crowd was still hot. Match time 5:36.

D+

We come back from commercial and Jim Cornnette is in the ring. He brags about Perry Saturn's victory last week and he says tonight he will introduce a new member of the Cornette Contingent...

.

.

D. John Finlay!

Finlay and Saturn make their way to the ring and Cornette hypes them some more calling them the two toughest men to ever close a fist.

The general consensus is that Cornette underperformed.

B

***************************

D. John Finlay and Perry Saturn

vs

The Steiner Brothers

***************************

An open hard brawling affair that fell into a bit of a more technically minded affair near the end that saw Rick Steiner hold Perry Saturn's shoulders to the mat after a hard german suplex.

Winners: The Steiner Brothers

This match lifted the crowd. Match time 7:49.

B-

A hype video is played with AWA personalities talking about “The Ultimo Dragon” Yoshihiro Asai, interspliced with video of his wrestling.

Bret Hart “One of the things you have to understand about Asai is that his strikes are deadly. He's famous for his air game, but he can beat you with his kicks alone. Add to that a strong fundamental technical base and really there's no style he can't beat you at.”

Dusty Rhodes “I remember the first time I saw Yoshihiro. I almost quit wrestling that very day.”

Scott Hall “Hey yo. Oya me. This guy... he's not like anything that either you... or I... have seen... before.”

C

When we return Chavo Guerrero II is in the back with Gene Okelund. He says he is excited to have an international star like Yoshihiro Asai coming to the AWA and that he has the honor of meeting an international star tonight, Mexico's own: Fishman. Chavo also reveals he has enrolled in the AWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament.

C+

****************

Chavo Guerrero II

vs

Fishman

****************

Chavo goes over in short match.

Winner: Chavo Guerrero II

This match brought the crowd mood down. Match time 4:35

D-

***************************

“The Silver King” Cesar Barron

vs

Brian Lawler

***************************

Brian Lawler makes his debut, all smiles and high fives for the fans. The Silver King by comparison is repulsed at the idea of touching the fans. In fact he is even disgusted by the idea of getting into the ring with Brian Lawler and it takes some time to convince him to do it.

Hennig “Brian Lawler is supposed to be descended from royal blood himself, but you can see by the way he was touching these peasants out here he needs a lesson from a real king on how one should carry themselves.”

Eventually Barron gets into the ring and apparently had the new comer off of his game with his theatrics because he is able to get the roll up and the pin in a reasonably short period of time.

Winner: Cesar Barron

This match was poorly placed on the card. Match time 4:36

D+

*************

Scott Hall

vs

Ron Simmons

*************

This one is pure action right off the bat as these two brawl from the ring, around the ringside area, and back in again for the first half. Ron starts to throw Hall around for the second half but starts to run out of steam and Hall capitalizes with a few hard shots and then counters a suplex into an inside cradle for the win.

Winner: Scott Hall

Ron Simmons didn't have the stamina for this match and seemed to be a bit overwhelmed by the pressure. Match time 8:29

C+

Before we go to our first commercial we cut to the back where Gene Oklerlund is with The Hart Foundation.

Bret and Owen talk about how much their victory last week meant to them and their family. And about how The Miracle Violence Connection are a pair of big tough guys, but a wrestler will beat a big tough guy every day of the week.

Gene reveals that both Bigelow and Gordy have entered the World Title Tournament. He then points out that both the Hart brothers are both in the tournament and asks what will happen if they meet in the ring at Regenesis.

Owen “If? If? Well, Gene, when there's no one left to beat but me and my brother, then the best man will win.”

B

*****************************

The Hart Foundation

vs

The Miracle Violence Connection

*****************************

This match started slowly with the harts making frequent tags on Bigelow. But MVC used the power game to come back. Using repeated cheapshots on the younger, and more hot headed, Owen Hart the MVC kept Bret isolated and double teamed while Owen distracted the official, trying to get revenge. Eventually Bret makes the hot tag to Owen who fairs well for a time before getting caught with at big Terry Gordy clothesline and the Miracle Violence Connection start in on him. It is at this point that Terry Funk walks out from the back.

Lord Alfred Hayes “He has absolutely no business being out here.”

Hennig “He's just scouting his competition for the World Title. He's doing what any serious competitor would do.”

Lord Alfred Hayes “The AWA rules clearly state that no-one besides the ring crew and people with a valid manager's license are permitted at ring side during an active bout. He's going to get fined for this.”

Terry Funk walks to the ring and insists that Bret Hart shake his hand. Hart tries to ignore Funk but when it becomes clear that Funk isn't leaving Hart gets off the apron and yells at Funk to get to the back. Funk keeps his hand extended, pleading with Bret to shake it. To forgive him. Officials are pulling Funk towards the back but are unable to move the larger man. Bret tells them to get Funk out of there as Bigelow and Gordy hit a huge double spine buster on Owen. Bigelow makes the pin. Hart notices but gets back into the ring to late as the match is over.

Winners: The Miracle Violence Connection

LAH “We're out of time, but I can tell you there will be consequences for Terry Funk after tonight!”

The crowd burned out a the end. Match time 23:32

News and Notes from AWA presents All-Star Wrestling:

The backstage was said to be very happy with how the show went. There were no incidents and those who are more optimistic minded are of the opinion that the locker room is gelling.

--

Announced for next week's All-Star Wrestling:

Bret “The Hitman” Hat and Ron Simmons

vs

Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow and Scott Hall

as well as

Owen Hart

vs

“Bam Bam” Terry Gordy

--

In a short and formal press release it was noted by the AWA that Terry Funk had indeed been fined for his actions following the first episode of All-American Wrestling. But as bad as Terry Funk's display of poor sportsmanship was, the AWA has a zero tolerance policy for anyone who is not a registered member of the ring crew or a holder of a managerial license setting foot in the ringside area during a live bout.

The AWA will address the Terry Funk situation and disclose what, if any, disciplinary action will be taken against the honoured veteran.

--

AWA present's All-Star Wrestling drew a 2.91 rating. Up slightly from last weeks 2.89.

I think your take on the characters is great, too. I could practically hear Owen barking out his line about seeing who the better man is between he and Bret, in that sneery voice of his. Live from the Mississippi Coliseum, airing on ESPN it's...

The AWA presents All-Star Wrestling

We open the show to Verne Gagne sitting at a desk.

Gagne “Hello. We here at the AWA are very proud of the product we have put together. We have the finest wrestling in the world, and the finest wrestler's in the world too. And that includes Terry Funk. Make no mistake about it. Terry Funk is a former two time NWA league World Heavyweight Champion. And we are proud to have him on our roster, but his actions last week were in clear breach of the AWA rules and regulations which state that no person may enter the ringside area during an active bout unless they are a registered member of our ring crew or hold a managerial license. As this is Terry's second infraction in the two weeks since the AWA has reopened it's doors we feel we need to send a strong message to both Terry Funk and the rest of the AWA locker room that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Seeing as such, it falls on me, as President of the AWA wrestling league, to inform Terry Funk that he is being suspended for one week, without pay, from active competition. We encourage him to go home, cool off. And get himself ready for the upcoming AWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament, which he is scheduled to be a part of, as well as his match next week where he will team with a man that I know is a good friend of his in Scott Hall against The Steiner Brothers. Thank you, and enjoy the show.”

Lord Alfred Hayes welcomes us to the show. Beside him is Dusty Rhodes who says something, but let' be honest, it could be anything, before Lord Alfred interrupts him to tell us that seven of the final eight participants for the World Heavyweight Championship tournament have been announced!

Dusty Rhodes “They are Rick and Scott, The Steiner Brothers! What fabulous in ring competitors if I do so say myself.”

LAH “As well as the grizzled 'Hardjaw' D John Finlay and former US Army Ranger, Perry Saturn!”

Rhodes “And you just know that that Jim Cornette is responsible for negociorating both of those men into the tournament at Regenesis.”

LAH “Well that's what they pay him for. Also, now scheduled to appear, the smallest man in the tournament, Rey Misterio Jr!

Dusty Rhodes “And how about Ron Simmons. That is a man who has a World Championship on his resume already. And is looking to add another.”

LAH “Indeed it's shaping up to be the can't miss event of the wrestling year!”

Terry Gordy

vs

Owen Hart

***********

In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, Owen Hart was tenacious against his bigger foe eventually catching him with a Northern Lights Suplex bridged into a pinfall in 10:17.

The crowd was cold, but this match lifted them.

Winner: Owen Hart

B

************

The Mirror

vs

Rob Van Dam

************

LAH “The Mirror replacing Terry Funk who, as we heard earlier, is serving a suspension until next week.”

Hennig “Which is just ridiculous. Terry Funk did nothing wrong. You just know that Bret Hart went whining to Verne Gagne after he lost that match fair and square last week and now a legend like Terry Funk has to suffer a tarnish to him reputation because Bret Hart can't face up to the fact that he lost to a pair of bigger badder men.”

The Mirror and RVD face each other in the ring when Terry Funk makes his way from the back.

Dusty “What in the name of all that is sanctimonious is that ornery sun-bitch doing here.”

Dusty Rhodes is allowed to swear on AWA television because neither Verne Gange nor anyone at ESPN is able to understand a word he says.

LAH “No, Dusty, for the thousandth time, I am not a Sagittarius.”

Neither can Lord Alfred Hayes.

Terry Funk gets in the ring and can be heard telling the official that, “It's ok, I'm going to wrestle my match.” The official informs him that that is not ok and that he's suspended and should leave, not only the ring, but the entire building. RVD puts his hand on Terry's shoulder and Terry shoves it away. He continues to argue with the ref to no avail. RVD spins Terry around to tell him that he's not in the match and to get out of his-low blow!

Terry Funk is on top of RVD firing away!

LAH “Terry Funk has lost his mind!”

Hennig “This is the kind of aggressive edge that makes someone a champion!”

The Mirror attempts to pull Terry Funk off of his opponent, and Funk turns on him! He drives The Mirror through the middle rope and to the floor! Funk sends The Mirror head first into the steel ring post!

Dusty “The Mirra's out!”

Funk threads The Mirror's limp arm through the metal barricade so that his elbow is hooked around one of the thicker bars. He backs up... charges... and kicks the wrist of The Mirror!

LAH “My god! That could have hyperflexed the elbow of The Mirror! He could have permanently crippled him!”

Hennig “Hyper-what?”

Dusty “He done obliteramated him! That sun-bitch!”

Hennig “What are any of you saying?”

Funk stomps to the back as medics attend to the mirror.

The crowd was hot and Terry Funk was a real star in this segment. Rob Van Dam was very underwhelming, however.

C-

We cut to commercial and when we return it's time for...

***************************

D. John Finlay w/ Jim Cornette

vs

Vampiro Canadiense

***************************

Hennig “Finlay could be our World Champion in two weeks. You two had better pay close attention.”

LAH “There's no question that John Finlay is as tough as nails, but it's going to be exceedingly difficult for any competitor to win the four matches in one night against the very best in our business to be becom the AWA World Heavyweight Champion.”

In an extremely short match, D. John Finlay defeated Vampiro Canadiense in 3:44 by submission via boston crab.

The announcing quality lifted the match. The colour commentary gave the match a boost. The crowd was hot, but this match brought their mood down.

Winner: 'Hardjaw' D. John Finlay

D-

Following the match Jim Cornette motions to the back and Perry Saturn makes his way to the ring. He brings a microphone and hands it to Cornette.

JC Hypes up 'Hardjaw' and Saturn saying that they are the two toughest men in the AWA. And he is proud to represent them. JC explains that he's not a wrestler and he represents wrestlers in negotiation. And not just with the AWA. He's represented wrestlers all across the country in negotiations with countless professional wrestling leagues and he's seen it all. But he's never seen the collection of talent he has under his guidance here in the American Wrestling Association. And it just keeps getting better. May he have a round of applause and he introduces to you... the newest member of the Cornette Contingent... and the final entrant in the AWA World Heayvwight Title Tournament at Regenesis... 'The Silver King'... Cesar Barron!

He tries to roll his Rs and fails.

The Silver King makes a grand entrance and shakes hands with Saturn and Hardjaw before hugging Cornette.

JC explains that the odds of the winner of the World Title Tournament being someone other than one of the three men standing before you are just about zero. And it doesn't matter if it's Owen Hart... pop. Or that crazy old bastard Terry Funk... boo. Or whether it's 'The Hitman' Bret Hart... POP! One by one they are all going to fall to the Cornette Contingent!

Jim Cornette underperformed in front of a cold crowd.

*************************

Cesar Barron w/ Jim Cornette

vs

Chavo Guerrero II

*************************

Saturn and Hardjaw head to the back as Chavo Guerrero heads to the ring. They menace him as they pass but nothing comes of it. In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, Cesar Barron defeated Chavo Guerrero II in 9:49 by pinfall with a handful of tights.

The announcing quality lifted the match. The colour commentary gave the match a boost.

Winner: 'The Silver King' Cesar Barron

C-

Terry Funk is shown backstage, where officials are trying to drive him out of the building. He doesn't go gracefully. But he goes.

B

A video is played where Bret Hart, Scott Hall and Dusty Rhodes discuss how great Yoshihiro Asai is. Turns out he's pretty great. Clips of his wrestling are played to prove it.

The performance of Bret Hart was fantastic. Dusty Rhodes was a real star in this segment. Yoshihiro Asai looked dreadful in this segment.

C

*************

Dustin Rhodes

vs

Brian Lawler

*************

LAH “Two second generation wrestlers going one on one here in this contest!”

In a match that had some good action and average heat, Dustin Rhodes defeated Brian Lawler in 7:51 by pinfall with a Bulldog.

The announcing quality lifted the match. The colour commentary gave the match a boost.

Winner: Dustin Rhodes

C+

After the match Dusty Rhodes stands up applauding his son's victory.

Dusty “That's my boy. That's my beautilful, brilliant baby boy right there. He was born from a lightning storm in my very loins and look what he has become!”

Dusty glows on clapping. But Dustin looks at him out of the corner of his eyes unsure. Dustin seems uncomfortable and suspicious. He leaves without acknowledging his father's praise.

We return from commercial in time for...

***************************

The Samoan Swat Team

vs

Lance Storm and Chris Kanyon

***************************

Hennig “It seems like every week Lance Storm brings out a new partner to try and defeat the Samoan Swat Team and every weak that partner fails him.”

This prophecy seems to fulfill it's self as in an extremely short match, The Samoan Swat Team defeated Lance Storm and Chris Kanyon in 5:07 when Samula Anoa'i defeated Chris Kanyon by pinfall with a Double diving headbutt.

The crowd was hot. The announcing quality lifted the match. The colour commentary gave the match a boost.

Winner: The Samoan Swat Team

D

****************

Semi-Main Event

Juventud Guerrera

vs

Rey Misterio Jr.

****************

LAH “These two men are two of the fastest in all of the AWA. So far Misterio has met with more success than Guerrera. But that could all change tonight!”

In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, Rey Misterio Jr. defeated Juventud Guerrera in 7:04 by pinfall with a Springboard Huracarrana.

The announcing quality lifted the match. The colour commentary gave the match a boost.

Winner: Rey Misterio Jr.

We return from commerical to see...

Gene Okerlund is backstage with Bret Hart who says he is excited to team with Ron Simmons against the Scotts: Bigelow and Hall.

Hart “You know, last week Scott “Bam Bam” Bigelow got a victory over me and my brother in a tag team affair, and I don't take anything away from Scott Bigelow. He's a big, bad, hard-hitting man. But as big and as bad as he is I maintain that we, that is my brother and myself, would have beaten him and Terry Gordy, just as Owen did earlier tonight, if it had not been for that lunatic Terry Funk. And it's up to “Bam Bam” Bigelow to prove that that is not the case.”

Gene “Well he has his chance tonight as that match is next!”

The performance of Bret Hart was good. This segment lifted the crowd.

************************

Main Event

Bret Hart and Ron Simmons

vs

Scott Bigelow and Scott Hall

************************

In a bout that had great heat and great wrestling action, the Scotts never seemed to get on the same page. Although each dominated at times, they miscommunicated frequently and even got in each other's faces near the end when tempers flared. By comparison Bret and Ron were utter professionals and at 25:26 that focus payed off when Bret Hart defeated Scott Hall by pinfall with a Victory Roll.

Dusty Rhodes and Curt Hennig have pretty good chemistry when calling matches together. This match lifted the crowd.

Winners: Bret Hart and Ron Simmons

<p>Live from the Columbia Township Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina it's...</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>The AWA presents All-Star Wrestling</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

We start the show with Verne Gagne in the ring. Verne reminds us that the AWA is all about physical, aggressive competition from bell to bell. But Terry Funk last week took that aggression, took that physicality out from between the bells and now a young man who wrestled under the moniker of The Mirror, a young man who only wanted to learn his craft while entertaining the AWA fans has been injured. He suffered a hyperflexed elbow and will not be able to compete for some time. Verne is going to ask Terry Funk to make his way down to this ring now as they are going to discuss what can be done to rectify this situation.</p><p> </p><p>

Terry Funk makes his way to the ring amidst boos. The crowd is a bit cold, but it's clear they don't like Funk. Terry goes to speak but Verne cuts him off. He reprimands Funk and reminds him of his family lineage. Reminds him that he was a two time champion of the NWA League. Reminds him what the AWA stands for. Funk begins to apologize but Vern cuts him off again. Verne Gagne says that it's not enough. He says Terry Funk is being fined $5000 by the AWA. And if this behaviour continues then he'll face a stiffer fine yet. Verne says they have advertised Terry to team with Scott Hall against The Steiner Brothers here tonight so they won't levy him with another suspension, but on top of the fine he asks Terry to publicly apologize to Rob Van Dam and to apologize to The Mirror.</p><p> </p><p>

Terry says he doesn't feel it's enough for him to apologize to RVD and The Mirror. He feels he owes the whole of the AWA an apology. He asks the locker room to come out here so that he can look them in the eyes and tell them he's sorry. Most of the locker room files out. Most notably absent are the injured Mirror and The Harts. Terry apologizes and asks their forgiveness. The locker room look at each other and Terry begins pleading for there forgiveness. He drops to his knees and begins sobbing saying he needs their respect and is nothing without it. Everyone is very uncomfortable. Verne asks Terry to stand up but Funk grasps at Gagnes hand pleading for forgiveness.</p><p> </p><p>

Lord Alfred Hayes “This is certainly an uncomfortable moment.”</p><p> </p><p>

Dusty “I do not believe that man or what he says for even one solitary moment, I do not.”</p><p> </p><p>

The locker room begins to thin to the back to get away from the scene. Gagne tells Funk that he should stop blubbering and that he's paid his penance, or at least will have: As Terry Funk has been withdrawn from the AWA World Heavyweight Title Tournament at Regenesis in three days and is being replaced by international star Yoshihiro Asai!</p><p> </p><p>

The offical, having lost control of the match, allowed both teams to get away with a lot but that style of fight played right into the hands of Hall and Funk who at 13:15 were able to defeat Rick Steiner when Hall hit a Fallaway Slam and scott was too busy trading blows with Terry Funk on the outside to make the save.</p><p>

In a bout that had great heat and great wrestling action, The MVC manage to isolate Owen Hart for much of the match. Many times risking disqualification as they wear down the younger Hart, but they find some success from it as after ten minutes Owen is beat. Bret and Ron have to make a save on every pinfall as Owen is clearly no longer able to kick out. The match builds slowly until Owen is able to hit an enziguri on Gordy and make the diving Tag to Ron Simmons. Gordy tags in Dustin but Bigelow comes in too. Bret and Ron clear the ring of the MCV and then begin to double team Rhodes with frequent tags. Owen is so beat up that the momentum slowly finds it's way back into the MCV/Rhodes camp as they enjoy their two on three advantage. But finally Owen is able to tag in again and gain revenge on Bigelow for his early borderline illegal tactics! Owen tags out to Bret as Bigelow tags out to Rhodes and the match up proves a bad one for Dustin as he finds himself in the Sharpshooter. He taps out at 25:03 as Gordy and Bigelow get back in for the save just moments too late. <p>News and notes from AWA's Regenesis.</p><p> </p><p>

Both head booker Rick Savant and Verne Gagne were said to be disappointed with the show, but they seem to be alone in the locker room. Word has it that the roster themselves are pleased with the show and that it has brought them closer together.</p><p> </p><p>

Bret Hart is said to be well liked and the roster is firmly behind his selection as champion.</p><p> </p><p>

Rick Savant reported spoke to many of the luchadores at Regenesis saying that he was willing to go to bat for them but in return, while he urged all of them to do whatever they had to do to make an impact on the Pay Per View, he asked them to tone down some of their high flying in the ring come Wednasday night. He said that Verne wants them to focus on the chain wrestling and submission aspects of Lucha, as well as the masks, more than the high flying and if they could do that then pushes were in store. The high spots are being asked to be reserved for Pay Per View. This appears to reflect the reported comprimise between Verne and Rick that resolved early conflicts on the subject of Lucha Libre in the product.</p>

Cornette asks if Rey thinks he's better than them because he got lucky against Gordy while they've had to suffer indignities all night. He doesn't wait for an answer but instead says he has a proposition for Rey. Since Misterio thinks he's so good why doesn't he try to prove it at AWA's Wrestling Classic... against 'The Silver King' Cesar Barron? Rey agrees cautiously and Conette commands Rey to get out of the ring because The King has a match next.</p><p>

In a bout that had solid in-ring action but not much in the way of heat, Cesar Barron and Yoshihiro Asai defeated Chavo Guerrero II and Brian Lawler in 6:28 when Cesar Barron defeated Brian Lawler by pinfall with a Silver Kick.</p><p> </p><p>

During the match LAH put over how close Chavo came to doing what Rey accomplished just minutes ago: Defeating Terry Gordy. Dusty suggests that maybe Gordy is just not at his best against he quicker opponents.</p><p> </p><p>

'Mean' Gene Okerlund is backstage with two very upset men in Terry Funk and Scott Hall.</p><p> </p><p>

Hall talks about how he was also in that ring for over an hour and he should be the World Champion right now... and that he won't even be given a Title match at Wrestling Classic is a decision that the AWA will regret.</p><p> </p><p>

Funk says that the slight that his good friend Scott Hall has suffered is unacceptable. But sadly it is common practice for the AWA. They have no respect for the wrestlers who put their bodies on the line for them while they sit in their cushy offices filing paper work and raking in the money made off of the blood of men like Scott Hall. And men like him. Like Terry Funk. Terry Funk who has given his all to this business for decades. Terry Funk who wasn't even allowed to compete in the World Title Tournament. Why? Because of politics. Because he didn't jump through every hoop the suits in the AWA put in front of him. And now poor Terry Funk wasn't even invited to the press conference of top contenders where they snubbed the man who should have been named the World Champion this Saturday at Regenesis. Well in a but a few minutes Terry Funk and Scott Hall will meet The Hart Foundation and prove exactly how biased, how corrupt the AWA really is when they beat their world champion... <em>and</em> their top contender. </p><p>

<em>Scott Hall was very underwhelming. This segment lifted the crowd. </em></p><p>

The Hart Foundation</p><p>

In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, Funk and Hall defeated The Hart Foundation in 24:40 when Scott Hall defeated Bret Hart by pinfall after using a foreign object.</p><p> </p><p>

Hennig "They did it! They did it! They said they would do it and they did it! The AWA has no choice now but to give these men the title matches they deserve!"</p><p> </p><p>

LAH "Well I don't know about that but we're out of time thank you for tuning in folks!"</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Scott Hall and Terry Funk had great chemistry when teaming together. Dusty Rhodes and Curt Hennig have pretty good chemistry when calling matches together. This match lifted the crowd who was burnt out... somehow... oh and everyone was still exhausted from Regenesis. </em></p><p>

Great stuff! Loving the Dustin/Dusty angle in particular. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
