Project: Balancing the gameworld

Recommended Posts

With the bantamweight division a touted addition, I thought I'd look at the default database to see which regions really need some work. As it stands, the US, Canada, UK, Japan and Europe are all pretty great, but look elsewhere and most regions cannot sustain a promotion with local talent.

Here are the home regions based purely on nationality (not where they are fighting). I suspect this gives Asia a higher number due to the number of Filipino fighters:

America 324

Japan 180

Europe 178

South America 167

United Kingdom 134

Canada 81

Asia 49

Mexico 28

Russia 26

Africa 22

Oceania 18

Central America 9

Bearing in mind this is using the Eyeball mod which added a number of fighters to less prominent regions, but it's clear that there's an imbalance. Russia, Australia and Asia are of particular concern.

Here is roughly the nationalities breakdown:

American 312

Japanese 180

Brazilian 156

English 91

Canadian 81

Mexican 28

Russian 25

German 24

Irish 19

Dutch 17

French 16

Scottish 16

Indonesian 13

Filipino 11

Australian 10

Swedish 10

Italian 9

Polish 9

Spanish 9

Armenian 8

Croatian 8

Greek 8

Hawaiian 8

Norwegian 8

Welsh 8

Chinese 7

Finnish 7

New Zealander 7

Argentinian 6

Thai 6

Malaysian 5

Czech 4

Jamaican 4

Korean 4

Peruvian 4

Puerto Rican 4

Slovenian 4

Ukrainian 4

Belarusian 3

Bulgarian 3

Chilean 3

Danish 3

Hungarian 3

Icelandic 3

Lithuanian 3

Nigerian 3

Serbian 3

Turkish 3

Austrian 2

Belgian 2

Egyptian 2

Emirati 2

Israeli 2

Portuguese 2

Singaporien 2

South African 2

Swiss 2

Afghan 1

Barbadian 1

Bosnian 1

Congolese 1

Cuban 1

Estonian 1

Georgian 1

Haitian 1

Honduran 1

Indian 1

Iranian 1

Iraqi 1

Ivorian 1

Latvian 1

Lebanese 1

Moldovan 1

Moroccan 1

Pakistani 1

Romanian 1

Samoan 1

Tanzanian 1

Trinidadian 1

Uzbekistani 1

Venezuelan 1

I think it would be great if some of our awesome renderers aimed to flesh out some of these less stacked regions to at least make them more playable in the default database. If you do place your renders here, it might be good if you specify the region you've made them for. :)

Not just renderers either, if people are happy to provide biographies which people can render for that would also be fantastic.

EDIT: This is just the male fighters because unfortunately I didn't get around to calculating a separate number for the girls.

These were my calculations for weight classes to based on preferred weights:

Featherweight 157

Lightweight 219

Welterweight 237

Middleweight 222

Light Heavyweight 163

Heavyweight 214

205 clearly lacking and probably need a whole heap more light guys as that's the way the real world seems to be weighted.

A good initiative. I agree with your concerns: In the default database, there are NO FIGHTERS based in Russia or Central America, with all of the Russian fighters being based in Europe instead, presumably so they would be more useful for SIGMA, but this really screws over TOP based in Russia, as apparently none of the Russian fighters are based in their home territory. Remember that "homegrown star" only means that the star must be BASED in the same area as your promotion, his nationality is irrelevant.

With my little expansion pack, I attempt to rectify this somewhat by adding more African and middle-eastern fighters, several of whom are quite good, and Weidt really helps smaller, struggling promotions with his mod adding lots of new PPV carriers and TV stations for regions that normally didn't have any, but I feel that Russia and Central America really needs some love here, especially considering how strong Russia is on the international MMA scene.

I've always added a bunch more camps in my expansion to give the poor fighters who don't get picked up by a prominent camp more of a fighting chance, but they don't seem to debut often enough to really make a difference when set to "randomly debuting." I am considering making all my new camps "debut at start" and with only 1 or 2 members.

Yep, pretty much my thoughts on it too. For a region with such a massive MMA presence, Russia is sorely under represented in the default data.

Here's my first guy.

This is something I have been trying to look at for a while. To me it has to do with depth and if you look at it even though I agree with places like Russia and a few others places. The UK despite having 134 fighters is still pretty small. If you go from Heavyweight-Lightweight thats only roughly 26 fighters per weight class, and that is not adding the 2 or 3 smaller weight classes.Even a big market like Japan going from Heavyweight-Bantamweight with 180 fighters would only have roughly 25 fighters per weight class. That is also saying that each weight has equal fighters. To rectify this the thing I have been trying to work on is starting small in 1998 and slowly have the world expand. This way not only is the game not jumbled into a couple of years, but also it feels like the world is growing.I just want to thank all of the render makers for their hard work in trying to improve the game.It is most def a work in progess lol.The one last thing is I agree with using Weid't mod and creating renders for them. The last few renders that have been posted I added to that data,if anybody wanted I could show which renders I used for a fighter.

If weidt's happy with it, it is a fine idea to use his fighters as a base. Not sure about adding all, that's like 2,000 fighters...

It's just an idea. It is what I have implemented for my game. The last few renders I have added to the render thread are based on weidt's mod.

Haha by fine idea I mean good idea. If weidt is happy for it to be done (and for bios to be added), it probably saved a great deal of hassle. :)

This is a great idea. I've got NO rendering skills whatsoever, but being an enthusiastic amateur writer I can definitely do some character creation and bio-writing if you need me :).

Russia is a mecca for MMA, in the same way America is with its wrestling culture. Russia has deep roots in combat sports in the forms of high level judo, wrestling and sambo, only MMA hasn't existed in their knowledge long enough for us to see more of these top Russian fighters, and generally from Eastern Europe as well. There are some great ones coming up, though. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guram_Gugenishvili example here)

The game has quite a few Finnish fighters in my opinion, compared to how many 'good' Finnish fighters there are in the real world (not many). That's one nationality that's well represented already, and doesn't necessarily need any more fighters, although it'd probably be interesting for me to write one. The names for the current Finnish characters are quite funny, as well. Never heard of anybody by the surname 'Kuqi' in Finland. :p (Ari Peltonen is a great, common name though, and he even looks very much Finnish. That's great job by GDS). Also it seems that Scandinavian names are mixed up a little in the game, with some Norwegian regens having Finnish names and Finnish regens having Swedish or Norwegian names. (There are some Swedish names in Finland, but only certain names, and they aren't really the majority).

Go for it - I can't be the only dude willing to make fighter expansion packs for this game. Come on you guys, get your write on!

Don't You know Shefki Kuqi, the once popular Finnish footballer?

Place of birth: Vučitrn, SFR Yugoslavia :o

Q along with many other letters don't belong to the Finnish language. We rarely even use G or F in so called homegrown words, rather mostly in borrowed words.

I'll give it a try to write some characters based in the weaker regions, I originally thought I could write bios and stats for existing renders, but I guess it works the other way around, too, if my writing is worth those pictures. :)

A little off topic, but I find it hard to write bios for WMMA fighters. Not sure why, when I write bios for the wrestling game they just fly out, with MMA they just seem boring. That being said I love this idea and I think it will be great.

Great render! It has that certain Russian look about it, if you need me to write him a bio and have some ideas, just say the word :).

I already tried my hand out with a Bulgarian light heavyweight Caelan Vranchev, I wrote a bio and filled in all the information in the game, but I wonder what would be the best way to pass on all the fighters that I may write to other people who make the expansion? Upload a mod where the fighters are, then somebody merges it in with their own and adds the renders?

That probably sounds like the best idea. I can't do any of that at the moment because the laptop I had WMMA on conked out, but I'm happy to once I get a version of Windows on my Mac.
