Wrestlers you miss...

Eisen-verse

Recommended Posts

I was watching old wrestling footage this afternoon when it dawned on me... Maybe it's because I was a teenager at the time; so, everything seemed so much more exciting than now, but there are a number of wrestlers I really miss these days. While they range quite a bit in reasoning, there are a number of guys I'd love to see perform once again.

The one at the tip of my tongue is probably not someone most would think but...

I miss...

Dean Malenko

Sure, he had no personality whatsoever but he was AMAZING in the ring. When I say that, I mean that he truly knew how to put together a hotly contested, back-and-forth, chain-wrestling, kind of match that really made you pay attention (that is if you loved actual wrestling versus just showman performers). His grizzled, ice-cold, approach, when matched with his calculating style, was something that made him an absolute favorite of mine.

There are others I miss but he stands out right now.

A lot of people come to mind, but my top names...

Shawn Michaels - I wish a guy like Michaels could just go on forever. Guy never went stale and was always entertaining.

Eddie Guerrero - Left us way too soon and at the peak of his career.

Steve Austin - Same as Michaels. I only hated him when he was in non-wrestling roles for too long. Injuries suck.

Goldust - I mean the real deal, evil freak that played mind games on people. I never understood it why he didn't really make it to the big time. He had a unique approach when it came to his brawling, and he could deliver incredible promos. His look worked; it was different and like no other.

Scott Hall - Whyyyy Scott, you should have been a 20 time champion by now.

Some of these guys may still be around, but I haven't watched in a while and mainly only seen WWE events.

London and Kendrick - I loved this tag team and thought both guys would go on to big things in the 'E, but they both stalled out and disappeared after a while.

Muhammad Hassan - Such a unique and interesting character, he could've been one of the biggest heels ever if UPN hadn't canned him.

JBL - His year long run with the WWE Title is one of my favorite World title runs ever, the ultimate weasel and it seemed like after Mania 21 the 'E just didn't have anything for him anymore.

Shelton Benjamin - Such an explosive, fun-to-watch athlete. His spots in the Money in the Bank matches were always a high-point of WM, but he just kind of disappeared too.

There are definitely more that just aren't coming to mind right now, but those are the guys off the top of my head.

I also am sad about Goldust never making it. I have been watching a lot of WWF from just before the attitude era, and it is so wierd especially when reading how random and odd everything seems, with people going for the title one PPV then not making the next card.

As for Dean Malenko I have watched a lot of his matches on Youtube and while I don't miss him (I never really saw him until his late WCW/ WWF run which I don't remember all that well being about 7 at the time.) But I really wish he was young and active now, even though he would still get misused. Eddie G vs. Dean Malenko is one of my favourite, match, the wrestling, the atmosphere, the fans and the significance. It's a great match.

Mine is more workers I missed rather than miss.

I miss good working tag teams. The Midnight Express, the Rock 'n Roll Express, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, etc. Teams who could have a good match and make for a great tag team division.

I miss managers. Managers haven't meant a thing in wrestling for years, probably since the early 90s,and once the 'Attitude Era' hit, it was all about women in skimpy clothing acting as valets who add nothing to the match while taking attention away from it.

Shelton Benjamin is a guy who would have benefited from a manager and being in a tag team with a super charismatic guy. He was a great athlete, could do some fantastic things in the ring, but the product just didn't allow for his weaknesses to be camouflaged and his strong points accentuated. He was a modern day Bobby Eaton in that regard.

The fact people miss Shelton blows my mind. :p

I miss wrestlers who could throw a punch and make it look like they wanted to kill the guy they were swinging at.

Echoing the Goldust, his old skool stuff was amazing. I also miss La Parka, I know he still wrestles as L.A. Park but its harder to find lucha and I liked him being in US companies just for the weirdness of it all.

Larry Sweeney I miss already. Quite possibly the best promo guy of the 2000s

I am soon going to miss Dick Togo, can't believe that dude is retiring. Probably been one of the best in the world since the mid 90s yet horribly underrated by most.

Actually he had a match with the other La Parka and he won the rights to the name back.

Sean O'Haire. I know he wasn't a main event guy but I think he could have been.

Steve Austin.

Brock Lesner.

The Rock.

Goldberg.

Starting to miss Batista but not as much as the others. He hasn't been gone as long.

Chris Jericho.

Joe LeDuc. From the old Memphis Wrestling days and really, I miss cheap, nasty, gritty wrestling in general.

I think Shelton was always the guy who people liked, and wanted to do well, but just never broke past being a filler during WWE events. In reality, they COULD have made him much more than he was; however, it would have called for him to 'not talk' and go with an intense athlete kind of gimmick. I mean, his skills were there, his athleticism was definitely there, and the man put on one of the best matches I've seen on RAW in recent history with HBK. Sadly, his lack of a concrete personality made him never really 'catch on'.

I miss Shelton Benjamin, in a way, for what he COULD have been...

Cheers.
