diamonddave35
This PBP may be a bug, or just some knowledge I need to know..Do Unnecessary roughness penalties cause a 15 yd penaly AND a loss of down?? If thats true then maybe I need to touch up on a rule or two. If not then I just got screwed on this particular drive. Clemson scored 2 plays later..and pretty much cost me this game Georgia Tech ball, Q2, 3-2-GT34 (14:43) 7-7 Offense: Inside Run, Set: I Form, Play: I-FB-counter-RG Defense: Stop Pass, Set: Dime, Play: Dime-pass-MZ QB E.J. Holcomb hands the ball to FB John Voight. He powers his way forward for a short gain before he's taken down by FS Bibbles Bouggess. Wait, the ref has thrown a flag.It looks like Unnecessary Roughness against C Zola Williams on Georgia Tech.GT: No gain on the play.Unnecessary Roughness against Georgia Tech, for 15 yards. Georgia Tech ball, Q2, 4-17-GT19 (14:24) 7-7 Offense: Medium Pass, Set: SingleBack, Play: SB-FL-in-SE-post Defense: Normal, Set: Dime, Play: Dime-norm-Man QB E.J. Holcomb assesses his options. He ducks the first tackler and rolls to the right. He spots WR Clinton Robb coming open but the ball sails high. That's an incomplete pass.GT: No gain on the play. Clemson ball, Q2, 1-10-GT19 (14:06) 7-7 Offense: Inside Run, Set: I Form, Play: I-HB-counter-RG Defense: Normal, Set: Nickel, Play: Nickel-norm-Man RB B.J. Smoot takes the ball from QB Speedy Renfro . He follows his blockers through the middle and picks up a few yards before FS Trace Odle makes the play.CLEM: Gain of 5 on the play. boozie1580
Personal fouls, unsportsmanlikes, and penalties like that are generally called after the play. Becuase of this, they take 15 yards from the result of the play. The penalty does not affect the down. If you ran for a 3 yard gain on 3rd and 5, with a late hit unneccesary roughness penalty on the play, they would take 15 yards from the result of the play (4th and 2) and it would be 4th and 17. In this case, assuming the first play (the FB) didn't gain any yards, the 15 yard penalty appears to have been assessed correctly, with a zero yard run on 3rd and 2 resulting in 4th and 2, and the penalty on top of that resulting in 4th and 17. jbergey_2005
Correct, and as such if, it was 3rd and 5, and the you were to get 5 yards with an unsportsmanlike conduct. The next down would be 1st and 25, not 4th and 15.
diamonddave35
Ok..I feel like an idiot now..lol..what I did was read the PBP wrong during the game..Obviously the penalty came after the play..which it should be 4th down..I just wasnt thinking and thought it was still 3rd down..Maybe Ga. Tech will fire me after that one...
