GAMMA 130: Dooley vs Bintley Results: "..and the new GAMMA heavyweight champion.."

By Albert Browning, Dec 28, 1:12pm

FORT LAUDERDALE - "Referee Joshua McDonald called a stop to this contest at one minute, three seconds of the very first round, declaring the winner by TKO - Steven "Ozzy" Bintley!"

Of course, Bintley winning the GAMMA heavyweight title - easily the biggest achievement for a heavyweight fighter in the sport of MMA - wasn't the only big story on the card, as Russian lightweight Fiyero Lermontov secured his shot at the lightweight strap by submitting Brazilian Tarcisio Dantas, and Wes Hersch looked in amazing shape in his submission victory over Wesley Sneep.

The main event was, however, perhaps the most surprising turnaround on the card; Bintley was seen mostly as a striker with a great deal of athleticism, and the champion Dooley was the favorite with his great wrestling accolades.

It only took Bintley one right hook to send Dooley face-first on the canvas, and eight rapid-fire punches on the ground to convince the referee it was over. The finishing sequence was especially brutal, and you wouldn't have thought the Canadian Dooley, who convincingly defeated Renato and Murilo Satinho in his previous bouts, would be subjected to such violence in his next fight.

Bintley (17-3, 7-0 GAMMA) becomes only the second English fighter to hold the GAMMA heavyweight belt after Rav Kapur. He earns his rightful spot as the world's best heavyweight, although he is untested on the ground against some of the best fighters on GAMMA roster.

Webb impresses in grappling showcase

Another Brit had success in the co-main event, as David Webb (25-7, 10-3 GAMMA) defeated Charles Stiles (22-5, 4-3 GAMMA) via unanimous decision in an exciting showcase of jiu-jitsu.

Webb's success in the fight was set up by his superior wrestling, as he was able to defend all of Stiles' takedown attempts and complete a trio of his own. Stiles tried to attack from the bottom, and had his trademark guillotine in tight at one point, but Webb managed to escape and pass guard.

Stiles did have the Englishman in all kinds of trouble in the third round, as he started to land sharp combinations on the feet, but Webb, the former champion, realized the switch in momentum and halted it by landing another takedown.

The victory puts Webb back into the welterweight title picture, especially as he holds a decision victory over current champ Julio Regueiro.

Stiles is still a very tough challenge and a top welterweight, as he was in the fight all the time on Sunday, proving he can more than hang with the best.

Lermontov earns title shot in submission over Dantas

The Brazilian powerhouse Tarcisio Dantas, (16-5, 14-5 GAMMA) known for his devastating guillotine choke victory over black belt Manoel Cabral, got a dose of his own medicine as Lermontov made him tap by way of guillotine choke in the second round.

The fight was a title eliminator bout at 155 pounds, and Lermontov secured the win at 2:42 of the second round. Dantas was successful early, taking down the Russian fighter with relative ease, but got almost caught in a guillotine early and was swept over, leaving Lermontov on top.

In the second round Dantas was aggressive, looking to land knees from the thai clinch, but Lermontov was able to block and avoid damage. The Brazilian then went for a takedown, but left his head inside which allowed Lermontov to catch a full no arm guillotine, finishing the fight.

It is expected that Lermontov (22-3, 7-2 GAMMA) will face champion Tomohiro Takeuchi in April of 2005 at GAMMA 134.

Hersch stops Sneep's rise with a submission

Wes Hersch is back in top form, the one that saw him defeat Dexter Darling and JJ Reid, and bring Neil Napier to his limit.

The fight against Wesley Sneep (14-3, 5-2 GAMMA) was an exciting contest of grappling, as both men looked for the dominant position from the get-go.

Sneep got the important takedown in the first round and looked for submissions, but got swept at the end as Hersch claimed the top position. In the second round Hersch followed up on his momentum, landing a good leg kick and a punch combination on the feet.

With Sneep covering up, Hersch shot in for a takedown, which Sneep turned right around, but left his neck exposed, and Hersch happily took it and sunk in the fight-ending guillotine at four minutes and seven seconds of the second round.

Hersch (14-4, 13-4 GAMMA) takes home his second straight guillotine choke victory, and his third back to back in total. The member of American Cage Fighters will likely look for one or two more big wins before having a clear case for the title shot, but has had a very successful year thus far.

Sneep looked competitive, but will need to get back to the drawing board if he is to take the step up to fight top level middleweights.

Everett wins, but does not convince

On Sunday Wallace Everett knew an impressive performance could result in a title shot.

He beat the very tough veteran Kanji Togo, but just barely. Two judges scored the bout 29-28 in his favor, but one judge thought Togo had done enough to win two rounds.

There was very little action in the fight, with Everett seeming very tentative, and Togo trying to push the action. It was a case of one fighter not being able to accomplish much success, and the other seemingly refusing to do so.

"That's not the kind of performance you earn title shots with", GAMMA matchmaker Alan Batrosch in attendance commented, "that fight sucked. You're supposed to be the top five in the world, and you fight like that?"

Preliminary results: Cupples stops Gardner, Taffarel edges Smith

Evan Gardner was very successful in using his great wrestling to control Martin Cupples for a round, landing some good shots while on top. He seemed to get too comfortable in the second, however, as Cupples landed a clean straight right that buckled Gardner, and followed up with a barrage that left the referee no choice but to intervene.

The victory came at a perfect time for Cupples, who was probably fighting for his job on Sunday. Gardner takes a hard hit in his quest to return to contender talks.

Brazilian muay thai prodigy Thais Antonio Taffarel (24-6, 4-4 GAMMA) defeated Thomas Smith in a split decision effort, utilizing his precision strikes to pick apart the American grappler. Smith was unable to land many takedowns, but pushed the pace and thus convinced one judge to give him the fight, but was ultimately edged by the superior effective striking of Taffarel.

2004 Year Recap: Winners, Losers & Everything In Between

By Alan Batrosch, Jan 3, 3:12pm

Editor's note: Alan Batrosch is the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts' president and matchmaker, and wrote an exclusive end of the year recap for Blurcat.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With 2004 in the books, I'll have to say it could've been the best year yet for GAMMA. But that is of course our goal, to surpass ourselves each year, and I think we'll do it again in 2005.

We did 24 events in total in 2004, with 6 Fight Night shows, one Challengers-event and 17 PPV's. That's easily a GAMMA record, as we have usually alternated between 15 and 18 at best.

Not only did we have many shows, we had great shows - in fact, I think we should look at the MMA Awards of the Year results for reference. GAMMA took home the most awards out of all promotions (no surprise here!!).

Fighter of the Year: Jin Katou, GAMMA Light Heavyweight Champion

A great year for Katou, who won the title off of William Harrison and defended it twice against very tough guys in Marlon John and Isaiah Monroe. He also did it all by knock out, he didn't sneak past any of his big fights.

There's no question Katou is the best 205-pounder in the world, but he will face Affonso 'the Cyborg' Villar in Indiana in March. Villar beat him the first time by decision, we'll see who the better man is this time!

Another contestant for that award, in my opinion, is our middleweight champ Jakuchu Abe, who defended his belt three times in 2004, all by submission. He beat all the top guys, Matthew Dean, Gavin Marshall, Neil Napier - he'll face Stuart Strange next in January.

Show of the Year: GAMMA 118 - Satinho vs Dooley, May 7th

A great choice for show of the year, it was one of my favorites as well. Dooley came in undefeated in his GAMMA career, and the fight was one hell of a brawl, great scrambles and great back and forth.

Dooley of course took home the victory by TKO in the third round. But not only was the main event great, Affonso Villar knocked out Rafael van der Moot in the co-main event, the KO of the night in another classic brawl!

Hassan Fezzik also fought on the card, and was defeated for the third time in his career by Renato, who's a beast.

Fight of the Year: Murilo Satinho vs Chuck Dooley

Enough said.

Knockout of the Year: Jin Katou over Isaiah Monroe

Enough said? Katou was taking a beating in the first two rounds, but came back in the third to demolish Monroe in brutal fashion. Monroe's one of the best challengers for Katou, though, and will probably face Marlon John sometime in 2005 next.

Another great knockout I recall from 2004 that could've had the nod, as well, is Mike Watson's one punch KO over Ken Peters at 128! I mean, he threw one uppercut, then stood back. He knew Peters wasn't going anywhere after he landed, that was just classic Watson.

Submission of the Year: Julio Regueiro over Manuel Silva

Regueiro is the first fighter to win titles in two weight divisions in GAMMA, and also the first man to become a four-time champion. The fight against Silva to recapture that title was great, both guys had success but Regueiro showed improved hands and was able to outwork Silva for the late submission.

I'll say, we're lucky to have some of the best fighters in the world on our roster. They're who make this thing work, and they're making this thing the best sport in the world. I'll say with confidence that the best fighters of each weight class fight for GAMMA right now, I'd pick any of our champions over anyone else around the world in their respective weight classes.

Another group to thank is the greatest sports fan community in the world - MMA fans! Thank you for supporting us, you're the ones who make this possible and you make it possible for our world class athletes to make a living doing what they love (and live) to do!

Just thanks won't cut it, though, and don't worry - we'll have a couple of big announcements that should make you MMA fans go crazy in the following weeks. We'll always pay back your support, in one form or another!

GAMMA president says five round, non-title main events in future for GAMMA, big fights for 2005 confirmed

By Stuart Teacher, Jan 6, 10:36am

Blurcat.com interviewed GAMMA president and matchmaker Alan Batrosch in Bridgeport, Connecticut during a press conference promoting the upcoming GAMMA 131: Abe vs Strange event held in two weeks.

The transcription of the exclusive interview is after the break.

Teacher: It's a pleasure to talk to you, Alan, as always. Big fight coming up with GAMMA 131 in two weeks here in Bridgeport, what do you expect of this card?

Batrosch: Oh, man, this one should be great if you're a fan of mixed martial arts. Not only is the best middleweight in the world defending his title against a very tough number one contender, there are other very intriguing match-ups on the card. My dark horse pick for the fight of the night is the [Osmosis] Benn versus [Valentin] Taneyev fight, those guys both come to fight, and they're coming off losses, too, so they need to give 110%."

Teacher: Speaking of great match-ups, some great fights were just recently confirmed on GlobalMMA.com to start out 2005. Care to speak on them a little for those who don't know?

Batrosch: Well, most notably we've booked some big rubber matches for this year, we usually don't do so many rematches but these are the big ones, the fans have been asking for these fights to happen.

First off, Julio Regueiro will defend his welterweight belt against Nathan Chambers in February, headlining the GAMMA 132 card in Las Vegas. Regueiro beat Chambers back in 1996, but Chambers TKO'd Regueiro to win the belt in 1999. It's been six years since they last fought, both guys are absolute animals nowadays, way different from that time.

Then we also booked Mike Watson versus William Harrison three, and it will be the co-main event slot on 133, where the main event is going to be the Jin Katou and Affonso Villar rematch. That fight's going to happen in Indiana in March. Either Watson or Harrison could get the next title shot with a win, so it's kind of like a mini-tournament that night. Both fights between those two were so close it's really a no-brainer to see who really is better.

Teacher: Those are some great match-ups, if I recall correctly there was one more rubber match booked?

Batrosch: You remember these better than I do man, why don't you interview yourself? Yeah, we booked [Aleksander] Ivanov against [Hassan] Fezzik, those guys split fights too and Ivanov was the first guy to beat him, and Fezzik submitted him in the rematch, so it was the logical choice. Either guy could fight for the title next, too.

Teacher: That fight was for GAMMA 134 in Las Vegas, right?

Batrosch: It is, it's the co-main event under the lightweight title bout with [Tomohiro] Takeuchi and [Fiyero] Lermontov.

Teacher: There's been talk in the MMA media about a new regulation that's been in the works about non-title main events. You've been very vocal recently about wanting to make five round non-title fights happen in the near future, do you have any news to break on that front?

Batrosch: Actually we were just discussing it with the athletic commission in Nevada and it's pretty much done. It's for the main events only, and the first one is going to be GAMMA 135. I think it's a great change for guys to have that experience in deep waters before actually fighting for the title.

Teacher: That is great news, care to give us a hint as to who might be fighting on that card?

Batrosch: A hint? One guy is a former long-time heavyweight champ and the other is an animal with great wrestling and knockout power in both hands. That good enough?

Teacher: It's so nice of you to always break the news to us, we really appreciate that! What about the Fight Night cards and other televised main events, do you think you can make them five rounds as well?

Batrosch: Any time, buddy. And that's a good question, I can't say yet if we can do that, but we'll have to sit down and talk with the [TV company] guys and see what we can do.

Teacher: Thank you for the time, Alan, as always! We'll be looking forward to more news from you and the great fights to start out 2005!

Batrosch: No problem.

GAMMA Sign Top Middleweight Prospect, Called Out Immediately

By Bill Jordan, Jan 11th, 11:52am

It was announced this morning by GAMMA president Alan Batrosch that GAMMA had signed top middleweight prospect Frederico Vergara (18-2) to their roster earlier this month.

Vergara, the 27-year old Mexican, has been competing around the globe, most notably for ALPHA-1 in Japan, winning the promotion's middleweight title in 2002, submitting Heiji Endo. With victories over Haranobu Oshiro, Nathan Ronald, Tuck Durdell and Bambang Sriyanto, Vergara is considered a blue-chip prospect in MMA with an impressive resume already at hand.

Vergara's first opponent could already have been decided before his debut fight has been inked, as GAMMA middleweight contender Wes Hersch (14-4, 13-4 GAMMA) called him out on the Mexican's personal Tweedle-account.

Quoted from Tweedle.net/VergaraMMA

"This guy is all hype, he hasn't fought anybody", Hersch wrote. "Looks like it's easy to become a 'top middleweight' beating nobodies over in Japan."

"His record is a joke. Heiji who? Bum Sriyanto? If those are your biggest victories, you're being spoon-fed. I'd be happy to expose this paper champion to the American audience."

Vergara didn't remain silent, however, as he retaliated on Hersch's own Tweedle-account:

"Come and see what I'm made of, u're welcome to try!! Who have u beat?? See ya in the cage nobody!"

There is no reported personal history between the two middleweight stars, and Wes Hersch has normally been seen as a man of few words. It'll be interesting to see how the 'beef' develops in the near future, and whether GAMMA matchmaker Alan Batrosch will actually match the two up.
