Lucky
And it's not even illegal! lol http://www.daz3d.com/i/0/0? For a limited time(?), Daz is offering all 3 programs for free. I skimmed these forums and haven't seen any threads on it so I thought I'll let everyone know. I'm not really into Daz 4 and already have Hex, but I'm definitely grabbing Bryce:D

Lucky
$429.95 for free? WTF? I know it seems weird to me too, but I downloaded Bryce. Haven't installed it yet, but I got 4 separate downloads which are Bryce7, Bryce content, Bryce lighting and Bryce Pro content. I also have the serial for Bryce in my Daz account which some people on Daz forums are reporting they are not getting. My guess is they are working on something that will make these products worthless, but if that was the case, why release Daz 4 in the first place? All I know is that I got Bryce for free lol and after thinking about it, I might grab Daz too and see how the rigging tools work there cause they suck in Daz 3... Derek B
Downloading everything I can while it's free... not sure why it's all free but I'm going to give it a go and see if I can start creating pictures and stuff for TEW. Might finally be able to make those alts I've never thought I'd be able to make.
jhd1
I would imagine it's just a marketing strategy. I'd be surprised if Daz don't make the majority of their profits from models and textures rather than the actual program - after all there is always the free version anyway. Having a month where a '$450' product is free is going to bring in a lot of new customers who will then need new models etc. That said, I'd be surprised if their isn't a new product on the way soon. Hexagon looks to be the oldest of the bunch, so perhaps that's the one up for upgrade. It's not the first time they have released their software free, either. DAZ Studio 3 Advanced was released on a disc with a digital art magazine in the UK last year. I've downloaded Daz 4 Pro, despite not being a fan of Daz 4 previously. I've also downloaded Hexagon as it looks like it might come in handy.
Lucky
For anyone who downloads Hex, which I highly recommend, here's a link to 80+ tutorials to get you started. Gary Miller's video tutorials are very easy to follow and you can find a tutorial for just about anything you want to do. You don't even have to register. http://www.geekatplay.com/hexagontutorials/index0.php They also have a Daz 4 section of tutorials, but I haven't seen them so I can't say much about that... Blackman
Is there anything worthwile for casual renderers to dl? I have the free DS4 right now, but with what I want to do with that it's doing just fine. So any reason to dl Hex or Bryce? Are there any advantages over DS4Basic when it comes to just making renders for these games? So no backgrounds, etc. It seems not but who am I to judge? DS Pro's has always seemed, well, kinda 'pro' to me. I simply wouldn't use them.

DS Pro's has always seemed, well, kinda 'pro' to me. I simply wouldn't use them. The only one I would recommend is Hex and that is only if you want to make your own props and after some experience (more than I have) create clothing. One of the major reasons I (and probably many others) started using Hex was because I didn't want to spend money on props that I felt I could create or learn to create myself. I'm not 100% sure, but wouldn't Daz pro come with certain things that Basic doesn't have? See if any features interest you. It is free after-all:D I've downloaded Hexagon in the hopes that I'll be able to create some basic props that I can't find elsewhere. Whether that will ever actually happen or not is another matter! If you haven't already, check the link I posted earlier. Trust me, those videos are are well worth watching, especially when your just beginning. Here's a link to my sharecg page. It only has 3 items, but since I only started with Daz about a year ago and actually creating only a few months ago I think I've come pretty far and it's mostly thanks to those tutorials. http://www.sharecg.com/pf/full_uploads.php?pf_user_name=LuckyMike

Haven't made a start yet though. I actually downloaded the ring and hardcore weapon set - I think you linked to it elsewhere on the forum? They are really good, even if I haven't had as much chance to use them as I'd like. Are you the person who created the wrestling poses on renderosity recently? I have a feeling the folder name is Lucky for those too.
MJStark
Hmmmmm, unsure. Daz3 only just works on my laptop (takes a while to change screens, load props and the like. I'm thinking that with extra features Daz4 is going to run even slower. Any opinions on this one folks? After all, if its worth my while (and free) I'd like to try it, but I'd have to delete 3 to fit it on (ie: Set up my sodding runtime again) so I'd only wanna do it if I knew it was gonna work ok

I posted here mostly so people can see that it really doesn't take that long to learn and it isn't that hard to make basic props. The wrestling poses (if we're talking about the same ones) were done by "foreverslackin" on the Daz forums, I don't have any uploads on Renderosity. I'm usually only found on these forums or more recently Deviantart and I upload freebies to sharecg. Hmmmmm, unsure. Setting up your runtime shouldn't be a too much of a problem. Just go to preferences, add a new directory and point it to where your runtime is right now. No moving files or anything. There are somethings I like about Daz4, but none of them, not even Genesis, could get me past the interface. That's just me though, since many other users seem to like it. Best advice I could give you would be to back up your files, uninstall Daz3 and then install Daz4. If you like it, keep it. If you don't, go back to Daz3. Self
Downloading them as they're free. I'm not as into rendering as I used to be though, and am pretty happy with my DazStudio3 set up. Messy and prone to crashing as it is.

Messy and prone to crashing as it is. DAZ 4 seems happy to crash too, from my first couple of days experience. Strangely it has only crashed on exit (and only a couple of times), so at least I've not lost anything
Blackman
Oh yes. I've used it since I took up some rendering here, and it crashes quite a lot, though the last couple of times it worked pretty well. Just save after 5 minutes of work and you'll be fine. And ow, it's the 'pro' version that's for free. I was thinking about the 'advanced' version before, which I didn't care about. Perhaps there's like one or two things that might interest me in this one, though. I just hope it doesn't 'downgrade' anything from my point of view. MJStark
OK, another question related to this. The Genesis figure, anyone know if it works in Daz3? Cos I REALLLLLLLY wanna try that out, but if it only works in DAZ4 then this might actually be worth investigating

liontamer
If I get these now, I should be able to redownload when I finally get the desktop put together right? it should be done in about 2 weeks, but I don't want to miss the sale.

I just realized my downloads expire on 02/12/2012 and I first downloaded about a week ago so it looks like there is a 2 week expiration date on the downloads. My advice is, if you can, download to an external hard drive and make note of your serials and then install when your desktop is ready. OR Wait until your desktop is ready (or nearly ready) before clicking the download button (so it doesn't expire) and hope that Daz doesn't pull the promotion before then. EDIT While typing this out I did a bit of research and found this site. It says that these are free only until the end of the month so that should give you a bit more time. http://www.3dworldmag.com/2012/02/02/800-of-software-for-free-grab-daz-studio-pro-bryce-pro-and-hexagon-for-nothing/

You can reset your downloads after they have expired. I'd be extremely surprised if you were to then be charged having 'purchased' it during the free trial period. You could always email them, but I expect they will say the same thing. Otherwise you could just try it? It's not like you'd have to buy it. For what it's worth I've reset several downloads (admittedly of paid content) and downloaded again without issue.
BHK1978
I see the following stuff in my bin on Daz and was wondering exactly what they are for: FBX Installation Guide for DS4 Texture Atlas Installation Guide for DS4 Content Creator Toolkit Installation Guide for DS4 Pro Darkside Style GoZ for Daz Studio 32-bit Do I need any of the above to run Daz4? If anyone could tell me it would be greatly appreciated.

The top three are nothing more than manuals for installing a specific plugin which, for the moment at least, is also free but needs to be 'purchased' separately. I can never remember what FBX is, but I believe Texture Atlas is meant for using textures game making while Content Creator Toolkit is meant to make the distribution of professional original content easier. So unless you plan on making and selling stuff, you'll not need that either. Only thing that might be useful is the Darkside Style which (very slightly) changes the UI of DAZ 4. I'm using it because it's a bit more like DAZ3. Hope that helps!

I could never figure out DAZ3 for the life of me which always annoyed me because I pretty much taught myself to do Final Cut Pro but I could never figure out how to do DAZ3 even with all the videos on the internet going step-by-step. MJStark
I both love and hate Daz3D today. They sent me a generic $10 voucher (code: 10BucksFree ). But they also upped the price of the only thing I REALLY wanted to buy by $5, making it $14.95! Gutted
