Best way to improve on the mic

Recommended Posts

So I'm curious what everyone does to improve workers on the mic. Is there a minimum requirement for angle length, or can I just stick a wooden Chris Benoit caliber mic guy in a segment with an A mic/entertainment skill guy for a minute and that'll work.

I can seemingly get everyone to build skills in the other areas (brawling, tech, performance, etc) but the entertainment skills are just kicking my butt.

Any tips you have would be spectacular.

Thanks!

Two ways.

1) Being in angles of 6 minutes or longer with some one better than you as already stated. As a note you don't even have to have the worker you're tyring to build rated on Mic or Entertainment. I watched Marat Khoklov's entertainment skills skyrocket being based on menace working angles with Emma Chase and the rest of my version of the new Supremacists.

2) Colour commentate. Mic, Charisma and acting will all rise if you are a color commentator. You can be set as an active worker just have him sit in the third seat for awhile and gain some experience in all those useful entertainment skills.

As a note, this only works if the person in the second chair (the "real" color commentator) is very strong. If you're TCW and you put a Marat next to a Kyle Rhodes, it's going to get you dinged on every segment (erm, more than usual). I've had good results using this method with Yuko Okui if I have a Melanie Florence/Queen Emily/Grace Harper/Sakurako Kagawa or even Jenny Playmate in the second chair but a lesser person (like say, Lynn Cox) gets even my midcard matches dinged.

I've had Jack Avatar improve to 91 charisma in the second chair, with Davis Ditterich as the first chair man.

In my games I devote my post shows to what I call "promo practice". I created an angle featuring 2 workers who are rated on entertainment skills and 6 workers who are not rated. After each show I will run 3 of these angles in the post show and it allows up to 18 different guys to get better at their promo skills!

And to think I've been using movie parodies and angles like that for this purpose. But question for you. How do you frame these angles? Are they framed as just guys talking or do they have a context? Because it seems to me if you made these angles into worker debates, they could be useful on the card as tools to hype feuds as well. Sort of verbal lumberjack matches if you will.

I do these pre and postshow and my reasoning is its a meet and greet for the workers and the audience. At one of the places that I work we have a meet and greet at the intermission halfway though the show and we go out in gimmick and work the crowd. We sign stuff and talk (or gesture in my case Amish Cousin Simon doesn't speak). And you will see some of the weaker guys at talking hang with some of the better ones to make sure they're not screwing up.

To be honest, in my mind, I'm just framing them as practicing promos. I know they take place during the post show, but for diary/game play purposes I'm just pretending that it's an empty arena and they are just practicing. The 6 guys who are learning each take turns cutting a promo, and the two stars who have great entertainment skills are there to give advice and rate them. Sounds weird I know, but it's how I play!

For the record, I think this is a fantastic idea and I have already stolen it.

Gives me a chance to use Joe Sexy for something.

Nothing wrong with that. It works for you and you enjoy it. So that's what counts. I was asking because you gave me a flash of inspiration. We've seen wrestlers hassle each other for many different reasons. But when was the last feud you saw where the elitist heel(s) got on the face's case for not knowing how to speak properly? In that kind of scenario, a debate angle structured like your promo practice could be very useful. The debaters being judged by Entertainment and the unrated guys firing questions at them. Maybe a moderator rated on Mic skill if you really wanted to formalize it. Could also fit if someone wanted to cook up their version of the SWF Election storyline. Don't know I could get debate storylines into the current Cappy Pack. But I could maybe look at them for a second edition down the raod.

This is a great idea, and I would definitely use such angles if you were to release a second edition! I'm running a TCW game where my roster has gotten pretty huge. I have been debating starting up and NXT style show where I can pair some unused mid carders with rookies/youngsters. This type of angle would be perfect!

Well, gotta get the original edition out first. :) But I'm hopeful I can do that soon. And I have a bunch of outlines in reserve. So if I can, I certainly have material to go with this idea you've given me.

And Brother Kaneso, the debate story is now among them. Tag version should be easy to do to also. Just gotta tweak the casting.
