Notes: There was a 3 episode OVA anime adaptation of the Phantom of Inferno visual novel called Phantom: The Animation released 5 years earlier in 2004. Phantom: Requiem is not a continuation of the OVA so these completely separate adaptations.

Synopsis: The organisation known as Inferno have a plan to unify the underworld under their control- their main 'weapon' being the elusive assassin known as "Phantom".

A Japanese highschool boy, visiting America as a tourist, gets caught up in the latest incident involving Phantom. He desperately tries to flee the scene and manages to out-run Phantom. After days in hiding, Phantom eventually catches up to him. However Phantom's handler in Inferno known as "Scythe Master" is impressed by the tourist's survival instincts and instead of ordering "Phantom" to kill the tourist, captures him and brainwashes the tourist in order to have him trained as a second "Phantom".

The original "Phantom" a girl of highschool age given the name of "Ein" by Scythe Master is given the task to train the brainwashed tourist, who has been given the name "Zwei." Will "Zwei" be able to regain his memories, will he ever be able to escape the life of an assassin, and will he also be able to help "Ein" regain her own humanity and convince her that she is not just a weapon.

Recommended Viewing Age: Approx 15 and up- The female characters can at times wear skimpy/revealing clothing, whilst there is also some nudity and some sexualised situatons, with Claudia making several attempts to seduce 'Zwei'.

Ein is portrayed in some sexualised situations with 'Scythe Master' but they are definitely designed more to creep out, rather than turn on the audience. All in all I wouldn't say this is a fanservice heavy series, but there's enough sexual content there to make it only really suitable for older teens and up but given the dark subject matter that would have been the case anyway.

Action Level: Fairly High- This is a series featuring assassins, they fire guns, they shoot people...what else were you expecting?!

Joking aside there is a bit more than that, we get roof top sniping, gun-fights, hand to hand combat, explosions, car chases....even a drive-by from a motorcycle. The series isn't one hundred percent mindless action, but there is plenty of it and it's pleasantly varied....it's not just someone sniping people from a dark alley or a rooftop.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Medium- From an overall perspective Phantom is not what you would particularly call a 'moe' type of series. However "Ein" coukd be seen as a 'moe' character, in the fact that she is an 'emotionless girl' character, that will have you pleading for her to break-free from being 'used', whilst Cal Devens who appears during the second arc is the cute and enthusiastic but vulnerable girl with a hard up-bringing and tragedy forced upon her.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The character's are attractive but on the whole realistically proportioned- it's pretty much in that middle ground of a realistic style and an Otaku-bait Bishojo style.

There's not a lot else to say about the visuals, other than they are pretty good. Background art is solid, the series has good lighting and on a whole the action scenes are well animated. Sure the very best looking series released today would have surpassed this, but against most stuff it holds up very well.

Music: The opening song for the first and second arcs 'Karma' sung by Kokia is a dark and ethereal that is a perfect fit for the mood of the anime. 'Jigoku No Mon' by Ali Project is the ending- it's Ali Project.... and you know my opinion on them 'You've heard one Ali Project song, you've heard them all'- that being said their 'progressive pop' actually isn't a disastrous fit.

By the time the third arc comes round Ali Project are doing the opener with 'Senritsu No Kotomachi'- it's not a patch on the opener, it is Ali Project after all. But to be fair the lyrics of the song did have a nice dissonance with the upbeat tune/slice of life visuals- which did give some foreboding to the situation presented at the start of the final arc not being all that it seems.

It's actually a complete swap around with the third arc, as Kokia who sung the opening for two thirds of the series, does the ending song with 'Transparent' for the final third.

The BGM soundtrack is excellent, mangaging to find the right mood and tone throughout. The more memorable tracks are some of the quirkier ones, such as the seductive tones of Claudia's theme- which given the ample size of her breasts is highly appropriate- whilst "Zwei" gets his own theme a quirky rap song that fits in with the 'cooler' feel of the second arc.

Plot and Characters: Phantom-Requiem for the Phantom is a series that can be divided into three arcs, but to elaborate too much on how these arcs came about, would perhaps give too much away from what becomes a complex plot with several twists.

Overall though Phantom is driven by it's characters and is a study in what it takes to create the 'perfect assassin' and has a general moral ambiguity regarding the job that they do- generally portraying the Phantoms as not bad people, but those driven into doing bad things for a variety of reasons.

'Ein' is a girl stripped of all emotion, steadfastly loyal to the man known as 'Scythe-Master'- being the perfect killer is all she knows, and she's extremely good at it. "Zwei" despite having his memories erased, is more aware of the moral implications and wants "Ein" to regain her own humanity- but he can't escape the life of an assassin either because he knows that if he did, he would be hunted down. He eventually does become as skilled an assassin as Ein but the twist is that eventually he is able to do things on his own terms (to a certain degree), rather than be a 'robot' without a mind of his own. In the shows final arc as third 'Phantom' called "Drei" is not brainwashed but instead has had her feelings of jealousy, revenge and a desire not to be seen as 'weak' manipulated.

There is also plenty of political/powerplay within the mysterious organisation known as Inferno. Scythe Master seems to have his own agenda which comes to a head at the end of the first arc with huge repercussions, that really turn the story on its head. Whilst there is also the ambitious Claudia McCunnen, a sultry 'cougar' that takes a keen interest in "Zwei" and plays a key role in returning him to being a more independent thinker, and fiercely loyal to Claudia is her bodyguard Lizzie Garland- though her loyalty is not like that of Ein's to Scythemaster and her loyalty to her friend is eventually challenged. Whilst the man at the very top of Inferno Raymond McGwire maintains an unnervingly calm and mysterious presence throughout.

A key plot element is the attempt to get a Japanese Yakuza family on board to join up with Inferno- which ends up having major repercussions. Whilst during the middle arc, "Zwei" befriends a young girl by the name of Cal Devens (who is also affected by Inferno's business), it's a relationship that ends up having repercussions (lots of repercussions to be had with this story) by the third and final arc.

Analysis: Overall Phantom ~Requeim For The Phantom~ manages to grip it's audience with a layered story, compelling characters and gripping action. It generally maintains a good balance between set piece action sequences and driving along the plot/developing the characters throughout with a darkly cool atmosphere for most of the story (more on why I said 'most of' later') that takes it's subject matter seriously without sinking into being overly morose.

The first arc has a slower more deliberate pace full of tension, building up the nightmare of a situation that the boy renamed "Zwei" finds himself forced into. The second arc which concentrates a bit more on the Inferno organisation as a whole, has a snappier pace and a 'cooler' feel, reminiscent of the sort of American mob movies (a clear influence), it both showcases the lure of the crime lifestyle and the cold hard reality of getting caught up with the 'mob'.

By the time the third arc rolls around though, it loses it's way, that's due to the story relocating itself from being based in America, to being set in Japan and in a highschool no less. It's like the creators of this story couldn't resist returning it to Japan and the egg of that problem was already in place, when they made the protagonist yet another high school student. Why is is near enough every protagonist happens to be of highschool age?!

The beginning of the third arc, actually has you wondering if you are watching the same show- as it presents itself as a school/slice of life (right from the new opening titles) but to be fair, it does play a neat trick in presenting a false situation for the characters and for the audience. Though they could have achieved the same 'everything looks to be alright now, but actually it isn't' feeling without shoe-horning in the setting things in a Japanese highschool cliche.

All that being said the final arc isn't terrible but it definitely pales in comparison to the opening and middle arcs of the show. That being said the show generally does build towards a satisfying conclusion with appropriate repercussions for most of it's main characters- though some may find the very end itself a little jarring in the fact that it seems to be ending one way, but then ends with a shocking twist. The shocking twist, actually makes sense given the very nature of the story, but it does feel something has just ripped out of you, when it does come.

As the main protagonist "Zwei's" development was both compelling and believable, whilst "Ein" gradually garnered more sympathy as the story progressed, as her sort of character should)- though her loyalty towards Scythe Master was somewhat frustrating. The way that "Zwei"'s relationship with "Ein" evolved throughout the series, was paced well and there are some real moments of subtle tenderness, that help strip away the cold/robotic facade "Ein" has forced into. The more intimate scenes between them, provide many of Phantom's most powerful moments and when the 'Eureka moment' does sink in for her, it is very satisfying.

As a villain Scythe Master is a character you will come to detest, though the fact that no one had the balls to pop a cap in this creepy manipulator bugged the hell out of me- even if "Ein" wasn't to prepared to turn on him- it beggered belief why no one else would have the urge to bump him off- even when he practically smugly goads them into having the chance to do so!

Claudia McCunnen actually made for a more intriguing member of Inferno- she represents the possible allure and glamour that might tempt someone into a life of crime- but her character is also so much more than that (we learn of her motivations that are driving her towards the top of the crime world), whilst her relationship with her bodyguard Lizzie made for a nice subplot, that showed different kind of loyalty than the relationship between "Ein" and Scythe-Master.

Cal Devens who is introduced in the second arc, does kind of feel like they are shoe-horning in a 'moe' loli character, but I actually didn't mind her introduction and she gave the story a fresh twist. Though not exactly the same, I'd compare her to the bumbling private eyes from Darker Than Black, in the fact that they feel like they've been transplanted in from a different show and yet because their character is different from anyone else in the show, they actually manage to add to, rather than take away from the show. Though it has to be said that her character does inexplicably age about five years and grow huge boobs, after a two year time-skip between the second and third arc.

Where Phantom really succeeds throughout, is that it consistently displays "Zwei's" struggle with guilt over all the killing that he has been forced into doing- does he like "Ein". The second arc in particular asks, if the only way "Zwei" can be content with being Assassin is if he strips himself of 'humanity' and fully embraces becoming a cold and ruthless killer- and that is where Cal Devens comes in to help him question his own values once again.

It also consistently reminds the viewer, that even if these characters did try to slip away quietly from a life of organized crime, that at some-point it will catch up to them....it's something hammered home right to the very end of the series.

Closing Verdict: Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ has intriguing characters with good character development, a complex (but not too complex for it's own good) plot and plenty of cool action- presented with good quality animation and a finely measured soundtrack.....it had all the ingredients to be heading toward not just a good but a great anime.......

And then the third arc happened, I didn't hate the final arc but the decision to move things back to Japan (especially with the back to school element) just felt unnecessary and forced and it ended up taking some off the shine off what was a very good crime thriller full of intrigue and tension.

Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: Funimation did the dub for this, and as expected from them it's pretty good. Both Newton Pittman (Zwei) and Lindsay Seidel (Drei) really grow into the main roles, whilst Colleen Clinkenbeard is perfectly cast as Claudia.

Some nitpickers might have a problem with them slightly changing a name (I won't go into the details here, as it sort of serves as a spoiler) by one letter (an L to an R) but personally it didn't bother me.

Synopsis: Yuto Amakawa does not know it yet but he's the heir to a family of Demon Slayers. None of his relatives are alive and since then he's been taken care of by his neighbour/childhood friend, meanwhile an amulet handed down to him by his grandmother has in fact been protecting him and allowing him to lead a peaceful normal life....

However the power is running out and he is under threat from Ayakashi (Supernatural Beings of Japanese folklore)- and as he is a descendent of the 12 Demon Slayer families- the Ayakashi want him dead. However one demon, a Cat-Girl who happens to be handy with a samurai sword called Hikari has sworn to protect him....

Just one more problem...Yuto is allergic to cats!

Recommended Viewing Age: Older Teens (approx 16+) and up- This show could be considered an ecchi, it's not just the fact that it has a regular supply of big boobed cleavage, panty-shots and nudity, it's also the fact that in every episode someone's boobs are going to get groped or stick Yuto's face in them. The odd bit of bloody violence, further adds to the fact that this a series that is edging towards adults only.

Action Level: Medium- This is a supernatural action series, so as you can expect there are fights featuring supernatural spells being used- such as Water Magic etc and powering up sequences.

The Supernatural action make's up a good proportion of the series, but take note it's only part of the series make up, and until the final stretch of episodes takes a back-seat to the comedy and fanservice.

Moe/Kawaii Level: High- The co-protagonist is a cat-girl.....what could possibly be more 'moe' than a cat-girl. For those not into buxom cat girls, and find loli's cuter, then Shizuku (who is a Mizuchi, water deity) is the series prime source for that.

Animation Quality/Art Style: There's not much to say about the character designs, other than that they are unremarkable and generic. Generic Bishojo style that is. There's nothing wrong with them but they won't win any prizes for originality.

On the whole the art and animation is competent, though some of the CG effects used in the fight scenes do look a bit on the cheap side. This is from the Zexcs studio after all an anime studio I'm convinced doesn't have the biggest of budgets to work with. Either that or they're just lazy.

Music: Both the opening (Oshichau Zo!! sung by AyaRuka) and the ending (BEAM my BEAM sung by the primary female seiyuu) are generic J-Pop songs.... up-beat, relatively catchy but utterly forgettable long after you've finished watching this anime.The BGM was unremarkable- not intrusive, but not at all memorable either.

Plot and Characters: Himari actually has a connection to Yuto from his past, and it's through that connection as to why he is so loyal to her 'master'. Halfway through the series a girl from another family of Demon Slayers also appears, with an agenda to join forces with Yuto to take out the Ayakashi (including Hikari).....

However through previous encounters with Ayakashi Yuto manages to defuse the situation and comes to understand them as equals rather than enemies. However his paficist ideals are under threat from the Ayakashi and Demon Slayers determined to take one another out....

Meanwhile Hikari's determination to protect Yuto at all costs, could lead to her awakening powers that would actually turn her into a threat to not just Yuto but humankind.

The comedy here is based all around fanservice and sexual inuendo- you know what to expect ....'accidental' boob gropes etc. From the very first episode, if you can't work out what kind of anime this going to be, and where it's source 'comedy' is going to be mined from, then your expectations are going to be way off.

Analysis: Omamori Himari, Creative Meeting-

'So our main protagonist has to be male in high-school and let's make him surrounded by lots of girls, better still lets make him act really awkward round them and freak out if they get flirty with him.

We need a main girl though, every harem needs a main girl right? Can't be the main girl if she doesn't have big boob's right?

And she'll have a habit of pushing them in the awkward virgin protagonists face. Well we can't just have her be any old big boobed girl, she needs to have something special about her...why not a cat girl? Who doesn't find cat-girls cute?!

Also lets make her have feelings for the main character to the point that she'll get possessive about him if others dare to get frisky with him like she does.

How about adding a childhood friend, that does all the cooking and cleaning for the protagonist?

Yes! One that's happy being 'friends with him but all of the sudden has got jealous that other girls are getting amorous with him and that she feels inadequate over her flat chest.

We can't be seen to be totally obsessed with big boobs though, we need to cater to the flat-chested loli market in a more positive way. So let's add a 'loli' character that is actually comfortable with the fact that she is flat-chested. We also need a deadpan character. Well deadpan characters tend to be flat-chested- lets make a deadpan loli!

What only one big boobed main character- we need another big boobed girl. The maid thing is very popular isn't it? We also need a ditzy airhead, maybe a blonde airhead. Bingo! Ditzy Blonde Maid with mega boobs!

I'm not feeling that she'll be enough competition for the cat-girl in terms of a rival for the heart of the awkward virgin-

I've got an idea lets have a haughty 'fiancee'....

Is she a bit Tsundere and does she have big boobs?

Yes!

Oh we can't be having people thinking that this just an excuse for fanservice though- we need to give this something called a plot.

How about something about fighting demons, that seems to be tried and tested

Yeah that will do.

Of course you do realize that we need some fight scenes.

Well just have them lecture one another, and then throw out some generic magic spell or something......Let's be honest no one's going to care about the fights, there here for the boobs!'

I'm convinced that Omamori Himari must have been an exercise to churn out the most generic, most cliched ecchi fanservice harem with bog standard shonen action plot thrown in manga/anime ever devised. It's not terrible but there isn't a single shred of originality about this series and it's easy to see how people could become jaded with anime, if all they were ever presented with was an endless stream of generic harem anime, which Omamori Himari is the absolute epitome of.

Saying that if you go in with absolutely no expectations and accept it for what is is, then it is watchable. To be fair to the main protagonist Yuto whilst he doesn't grow a pair in terms of being able to handle the amorous advances of his female companions, he does at least get some development from being a useless bystander to wanting to take action and have a firm conviciton in dealing with the problems between the Ayakashi and the human's his way.

I must also admit that I'm a sucker for cat-girls, so Himari did at least manage to appeal to me as a main character and made it easier for me to churn through 12 episodes of generic harem cliches.

Amongst all the cliched comedy throughout the series, a scene where Himari turns into full on 'cute' cat mode, did end up being rather cute and amusing.

Closing Verdict: Omamori Himari is as cliched and generic a series as they come. If you can't get enough of fanservice and like cat-girls then this may be the perfect series for you, no matter how cliched it is. But if you've had your fill of/can't stand fanservice/harem cliches then give Omamori Himari a wide berth.

Is the Dub Any Good?: None of the North American licensing companies picked this one up, so the only way to watch this is subs only.

If you really want to watch this, then Crunchyroll is streaming this but be warned that some of the fanservice has been censored. And let's be honest if you're not watching this for the fanservice, what are you watching this for?!

I don't normally have much of an opinion on the original seiyuu, as not being Japanese I don't feel I can accurately judge what is a good or bad performance. Most sound OK to my ears, and every so often I can tell what is a good performance......

Well in the case of the seiyuu for Yuto, Japanese not being my native tongue or not, I can tell that it's a pretty bad one. His voice is just all wrong and it irritated me from the start.

I just finished watching this one this morning. Basically it's what you said. Cliche's to the extreme. Easy to watch but no actual sense of fulfillment on actually watching it. The chicks are generic stereotypes and no one actually has any actual growth.

Plus I found it hilarious that the main character is a p*ssy and looks like one but then he gives deep voiced "What type of man would I be." speeches.

D- is the exact rating for this show as it does nothing special to at least bump it up.

When reviewing anime, I do like to peruse the internet and see what other people's opinion's are on an anime that I have watched- Not to copy or be influenced by their opinion, but just to see how mine compares.

Anyway one of the sites I normally look at (because it tends to come near the top of the google search) is Nihon Review- their reviews are usually well written but sometimes the reviewers there can come across as a bit elitist/jaded.

To get to the point, the reviewer who did their review for Omamori Himari- really hated the show. I'm not going to defend it as a great anime (you can see from my own review I put it at the low end of mediocre) but this reviewer vehemently disliked Omamori Himari.

One statement in their review I did find a bit presumptuous was this-

"Does anyone really care about fanservice anymore?'

So I'm throwing this one over to you the readers- What is your opinion on this statement?

And what is your opinion on fanservice in anime in general?

I always think of fanservice as the unnecessary and non plot related bit of silliness. That being said, fan service can be funny or even a bit titillating but mostly harmless. For me as long as it doesn't got too far over the top then it's fine and sometimes even welcome.

I don't go out of my way to find Echhi shows but if i find the show tedious then even a large amount of fan service is meaningless and i'll just move on to something else. Rosario + Vampire is very much an Echhi/fan service show but i like the plot and characters so the naughty parts are funny.

In more serious shows i don't find nakedness or sex clothing to be fan service if it's part of the show's tone, Phantoms is like that for me. Samurai 7 and such have a different tone and what could be called fan service just adds to the show.

Overall i don't dislike fan service and it's fine even if it's over the top like High School DxD. Its all about if a show is good first, if the fan service takes away from the plot, from the characters and just goes to far then i turn it off and move on to something else.

Of course fan service is very different from Hentai but that's a different discussion all together.

I think from the hundred plus reviews so far that I have done, that you would probably gather that to be the case. I think in the case of a show like Omamori Himari, it would probably be an even duller show without the fanservice, then again an argument could be made that because it relies so heavily on fanservice that it does not give the plot and characters a chance to develop beyond a set of anime by numbers cliches. At the end of the day my own viewing preference is this...... Good anime regardless of fanservice content > mediocre anime w/fanservice> mediocre anime w/o fanservice.

That's my take. I took a shot and watched Omamori Himari, egads the voice of the main character is just wrong, the over the top fan service really takes away from the show in my opinion. I dig harem shows but that one is just gonna be all kinds of wrong. You're so right on the amount of cliche's the show goes through in one episode.

Not even all the panty shots and innuendo in the world could make up for that! Heh. Still, it's so over the top that it's vaguely amusing, but i'll pass on watching more.

like everything else, it has it's place, and also can be over and badly used.

But since 99.9% of all anime is aimed at a Japanese audience, and their cultural tastes are very different than ours in a lot of areas, normally I just accept it and move on. I don't go out of my way to look for fanservice in an anime, I look for an anime that will entertain me, and then if excessive fanservice is part of it, such as Sekirei or High School of the Dead, then generally I don't have a problem with it as long as the anime itself continues to entertain me.

Synopsis: A team of scientists have made a breakthrough in the field of psychotherapy with the development of a device called a DC-Mini, which allows the wearer to enter the dreams of their patient.

The device is still in the development stage but the creators have been secretly using it to treat patients, who find themselves aided by a perky lady by the name of Paprika. However the DC Mini is stolen from the laboratory and complications occur in the form of a 'dream terrorist' that inserts nightmares into the minds of those also using the device.

It is now up to Paprika and the DC-Mini development team to dive into the minds of those affected to figure out who is behind the tampering and stop them before things become out of control and become damaged beyond repair.

Recommended Viewing Age: Older Teens (approx 16+) and up- Some nudity, some twisted sexualized situations and some violence, means that Paprika is near enough adults only viewing material.

Action Level: Fairly Low- There is some action of sorts in Paprika- as there are some chase sequences and gun firing- but I wouldn't really call this one for action junkies. It's a twisted and visually opulent anime but not an action anime.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Virtually Non Existent- Paprika has a cute, somewhat Genki girl personality but I wouldn't label her a 'moe' character. All in all there really isn't a cute or moe tone to Paprika at all, which is in keeping with the works of the late Satoshi Kon.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Outside of the dream world that takes up much of Paprika, the art-style characters/surroundings etc have a realistic quality to them and are consistently animated.

But, it's within the dream world that things really come to life and the visuals here really pull you, as though you truly are entering someone's dream. The transitions from one scene to the next are particularly stunning- particularly impressive is the way the characters such as Paprika evolve their own appearance through various dream sequences.

All in all Paprika is a visually stunning anime, with the visual playing a huge part in delivering the story, and though it's now over 5 years old it still looks impressive against the best of today's offerings. Given though that this was a film, and a film from a studio with a more than solid reputation in Madhouse, should we really be surprised that Paprika ends up being a visual feast.

Music: Susumu Hirasawa, provides a soundtrack that really compliments the often nightmarish visuals- the song during the creepy 'Parade' sequence being both playful and unsettling at the same time. The soundtrack is wisely only brought to the fore during the more frenetic sequences, and this contrast helps to make both the quieter scenes to stand out more.

Plot and Characters: Paprika the 'avatar' that roams the land of dreams cultivated by the D.C Mini is of course the poster girl of this anime movie- she's what you would call care-free and radiant with a consistently positive out-look. That is in contrast to Dr Atsuko Chiba- she's as attractive as Paprika (but more modest regarding her own beauty) and is also a lot more cynical, cold and buttoned up. 'Paprika' is representative of the unrestricted inner self, whilst Atsuko presents the notion that people have an outer facade that they put on- whether or not they are conscious of doing so.

Dr Kosaku Tokita is the obese inventor of the DC-Mini. He's a child like genius and is portrayed as being clever but irresponsible. He gets treated coldly and harshly by Dr Chiba (who he has a crush on), but you can see deep down that Dr Chiba cares for Dr Tokita but just want's to see him take care of himself better and be less self-centred/wrapped up in his little world.

The other key players at the lab are the cheerful chief of staff Dr Katsunoke Hori, the wheelchair bound chairman Dr Seijiro Inui, who wants the DC-Mini project to be abandoned and Dr Morio Osanai (a fellow researcher with Dr Chiba), and there is Kei Homori, Dr Tokita's best friend and the one suspected to be the theif of the DC-Mini. Two out of these four end up as the primary antagonist and an accomplice to the antagonist.

Not a member of the DC-Mini development team but a key character throughout the film is Detective Toshimi Konakawa. He's a friend of the chief of staff Dr Shima and a DC-Mini client, that is haunted by a recurring dream, set around the 'movies'- which he has a fear of due to something that happened in his past that he can't seem to move past, re film-making. He is somewhat infatuated by Paprika and his urge to be the 'hero' within the dreamworld helps him overcome his own fears and anxities.

Analysis: Paprika was the final completed project of the late Satoshi Kon, and it is somewhat typical of the man's work, setting place in a realistic world with characters that feel real but then melting away into seemingly illogical chaos.

As the story of Paprika evolves, the lines between reality and the dream world blur into one another. To try to completely make sense of Paprika would be fool-hardy, this ends up becoming a film that you need to absorb more than anything else, and the vivid visuals certainly help to achieve that.

That's not to say that Paprika ends up being all sizzle and no steak. Things do get weird by the end, and I would fully understand if people watched this and thought everything got too twisted for their own personal tastes.

But those who would accuse the film of having no meaning or purpose, probably aren't looking hard enough or would have waved the 'too weird for me' flag. The heart of the film it's driven by the relationships of the main characters not so much the story itself. Sure there's an antagonist but in the grand scheme of themes he's pretty inconsequential, and someone looking for any great meaning regarding the actions of said antagonist would be barking up the wrong tree in regards to Paprika.

Closing Verdict: Satoshi Kon (who passed away far too soon at only 46 in 2010) was one of the truly creative directors within the medium of anime. He had a succinct style (that admittedly won't be to everyone's taste) and his final film Paprika, did a fine job of capturing it.

A little strange, slightly challenging and definitely more of a film to be experienced rather than completly understood, but those who would dismiss the strangeness has having no direction would be wide of the mark.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Sony Pictures dub uses L.A based voice talent with Cindy Robinson in the dual role of the self titled character and Dr Chiba, whilst Yuri Lowenthal (who I'm starting to take notice of more as a subtly versatile talent) takes on the role of the obese child at heart Dr Tokita.

Overall I would say the dub is solid and certainly not a turn-off, should you decide to watch Paprika in this form, rather than the original Japanese.

Anime Influencing Hollywood: If anyone has seen the Christopher Nolan film Inception- and then watch Paprika will notice that the films have a similar plot, that's because Paprika was an influence on Nolan's film- something the director has admitted to in interviews.

Of course don't take this as 'Inception is a Paprika rip-off', I greatly enjoyed both films and Inception being a bit more action based is a different enough experience from Paprika.

First and only PSP movie I ever brought. It gets a little jumpy plot wise but once you have a solid understanding of the basic plot you can really enjoy the artistic imagery.

I don't know but the style reminds me of the Paranoia Agent art.

Synopsis: Teiichi Niiya in his first year of middle school at the Seikyou Private Academy, an insitution with rumours of hauntings.Teiichi soon learns that these rumours are in fact true, when he meets a beautiful but mischievous girl by the name of Yuuko Kanoe- only thing is no one else can see her, because she's a ghost!

Unable to remember anything about her past and how she came to die, Yuuko entices Teiichi to help her uncover the truth, forming the school's Paranormal Investigation Club in the process.

With fellow members, the enthusiatic but clueless Momoe and Kirie (who happens to have connections to Yuuko) the pair will unravel the painful truth behind Yuuko's mysterious demise.

Recommended Viewing Age: Teenagers (approx 13+) and up- With Yuuko not afraid to get touchy feelly and seeing no problem in occasionally shedding her clothes, the show does have some fanservice with strategic nudity, the odd flash of cleavage and some (un)intentional boob groping. It's not exactly ecchi levels, but coupled with the fact that the story gets progressively darker, there is enough there to keep Dusk Maiden firmly for teenagers and above.

Action Level: Low- There's ghostly haunting type stuff such as glass smashing in the vein of a Poltergeist, but overall this isn't the series to satisfy your cravings for action.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Fairly High- Yuuko with her cute playful personality in her happy form matched to her tragic backstory makes her ideal Moe material. Some may also find Momoe cute, but I think most will be so engrossed in Yuuko x Teiichi, that she may well come across as just annoying despite her oblivious innocence.

Animation Quality/Art Style: On the whole Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is an attractive series, that is certainly on par for the expected standards for an anime series released during the past few years. Character designs are typical of this era, and that works out as neither really a good thing or a bad thing- they're attractive enough but don't really help the series stand out from a lot of other series released during this era, using a similar art style.

The background art however is genuinely impressive, really managing to capture a creepy, haunting atmosphere whilst remaining well lit and vibrant in it's colours. Particularly striking are the ominous looking luminous skies that appear throughout.

There is however possibly some evidence of TV budget restraints, in the form of faceless/silhouette background characters. Perhaps some might pass this off as a stylistic choice, but I'm just not buying that excuse.

Music: Both the dramatic rock of the opener (CHOIR JAIL by Konomi Suzuki) and the folkier ballad (Karandorie by Aki Okui) manage to be catchy but more importantly manage to be in tune with the mood of the series. A solid and well measured OST, is lifted further by the presence of the emotional ballad 'Requiem', this powerful and moving song really adding to the emotion of one of the most touching and powerful scenes in the entire series.

Plot and Characters: Yuuko wants to find out what caused her to die tragically young and has her haunting the school as a ghost, but until she accepts what she perceives to be her ugly side and the negative feelings such as hatred and jealously that go with it, she will continue to not remember what happened to her, because casting aside the negativity causes her to forget.

Meeting Teiichi, has made Yuuko feel happy again, as he can see her as how she see's herself. But as she grows closer to him, she becomes more possessive and ugly feelings such as jealousy (especially regarding the oblivious Momoe trying to be more than friends) begin to appear and it gets to the point where she can't cope with those feelings and metaphorically speaking pushes Teiichi away.

The way Yuuko died is indeed tragic enough for her to be a resentful ghost- without giving too much away- lets just say she's enough youngster to fall victim to a bunch of village elders believing in too much mumbo jumbo and passing it off as an excuse to perform criminal acts.Once Teiichi learns how Yuuko died, he becomes even more determined to 'save' both her and their relationship.

Kirie who also has connections to Yuuko, begins as somewhat of an antagonistic character towards the ghost but with Teiichi's insight on Yuuko gradually warms up to her, and see's Yuuko for who she really is, rather than as a ghost that haunts the school. Though Kirie puts on a stoic facade, she is a much more vulnerable than she would like people to believe, scaring easily and perhaps having her own unrequited feelings towards Teiichi.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia starts out much more lighter and comedic towards the beginning, before things get darker and more dramatic as we learn what happened to Yuuko, who has a playful, teasing and somewhat flirty personality.As a ghost she is also unafraid to be seen in a state of undress (which as expected makes Teiichi nervous), though when it comes to Teiichi seeing the bones of her dead body she reacts like Teiichi is being a pervert.

The air-headed Momoe provides much of the comic relief, with her enthusiasm for the occult and ghost hunting but being completely oblivious to the fact that follows her friend Teiichi round every day. However she also proves to be more than a character simply employed to lighten the mood with her innocent attempts at trying to take her friendship further with Teiichi providing a trigger-point to Yuuko becoming jealous and having to struggle with the negative feelings she has cast aside.

Analysis: Despite it's dark, gothic atmosphere and the fact that the main character is a ghost, those looking for Dusk Maiden of Amnesia to be a horror will come away disappointed, this is a gothic love story that tries to blend comedy with tragedy. The closest this show comes to a horror is a mid season episode where some students in the school start to take the ghost rumours too literally and in some fore-shadowing to future episodes act as idiotic as the elders from the past, whose actions lead to Yuuko's death.

When you think about the basic premise of the show, in the fact that its about a ghost that has amnesia it does seem rather silly, but the execution is of course a lot more intriguing than it being put that simply and as a main character Yuuko provides a unique take on the 'Stepford Smiler', in the fact that keeps her true self locked behind a facade.

Despite all the talk of ghosts and hauntings right off the bat the show starts off light hearted, with the emphasis on Yuuko's playful side, but as the story progresses we see the mask start to slip and the show gradually gets darker- and near the end of the series the show becomes much more dramatic and emotional in tone.

That transition from a light comedic focus to a darker more dramatic show for the most part is handled pretty smoothly, but it most noticeably shifts gears around episodes 5-7, with episode 5 being perhaps the silliest of all the episodes and episode 7 marking the real turning point in regards to Yuuko's character and the story.

Though the central relationship between Yuuko and Teiichi is quite sweet and the show encourages you to get behind them as a couple- it's not without it's problems. There are times where Yuuko can be a bit of a irritant, to the point where you wonder why Teiichi puts up with her obsessive need to be around him all the time, but then again her moving towards becoming a Yandere is what essentially drives the plot along.

I also couldn't help thinking what would happened when Teiichi grows up, as a first year Junior High kid he already looks like a loon talking to someone that isn't actually there, so if he carries on having a relationship with a ghost, his future would surely see a visit from men in white coats.

Talking of Teiichi being a first year Junior High school kid, that's another minor gripe of mine.. He's supposed to be 12/13 and yet he's getting to be hands on with a 15 (at the time of death) year old- and the fact that she's a ghost doesn't make a difference because they make a point of telling you that despite being a ghost Yuuko can feel his touch. So this is another one of those shows where the characters act a little too 'mature' for their supposed age.

In fact despite having a decent balance between comedy and drama, with a genuinely moving and shocking back story in regards to the main character, the minor gripes to begin to add up, the most noticeable being Momoe with her oblivious denseness turning up to shatter moments of dramatic tension.

The ending it must be said is also a cause of frustration, in the fact that it looks like they are going to bring the story to the close one way , and then they decide to throw in a pointless swerve at the end. In my opinion the ending prior to the swerve was much more appropriate, more realistic and much more powerful than the cop out they ended up dishing out.

Closing Verdict: Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is a supernatural Romance, that takes a decent stab at transitioning from playful comedy to genuinely moving emotional drama. Unfortunately the pay-off is somewhat disappointing, especially as they had a much better ending in place, but they couldn't resist throwing in on more (pointless) twist.

Mildly Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: Sentai filmworks have done the dub for this show- though I personally cannot comment on it, as I watched the Japanese version on Crunchyroll.

Finished the manga so I'm probably not going to watch the anime. Anyways I really enjoyed the relationship between the protagonist and the ghost chick. It had it comedic moments but it had a more natural progression where the actual setbacks where actually important moments in the story instead of minor misunderstandings. The ending was quite heartwarming as I expected the series to end with "I will always have the memories" style ending but the protagonist actually using the powers of rumors to bring back his love was great. I really like when a character is proactive in a relationship wether it be the female or male in the relationship. Of course having not watched the anime I can't comment if there are any major difference so I might be wrong.

On the previous fan service discussion... I enjoy the medium of anime because of it's unique (to me) approach towards storytelling. In short, the stories are all over the place. They can be very small, beautiful stories like in Miyazaki's work or they can be over the top insane, so I feel like everything has it's place.

Anime offers unique advantages to drive drama forward. The shows/films that take advantage of that are an absolute treat. But I'd be a stone cold liar if I didn't say I enjoyed good ol sex and violence :-) And anime also offers unique advantages to drives those devices forward.

However it also looks like it was poorly executed (at least in my opinion) and the sudden change from one type of ending to another felt tacked on.

I did enjoy the Dusk Maiden show. Quite good for the most part and i do agree with the way it ended thought it'd go one way and circled back for the one they used. I didn't really mind it though. It's a good and solid show for what it is.

Synopsis: Skipping away on her graduation day from high school, ditzy and hyperactive Excel gets run down by a truck- but the powers that be decide that it's not her time to die (she is the main character after all!) and she is resurrected to become the other enthusiastic and totally ineffective minion of Lord Il Palazzo, the leader of ACROSS who aims to bring Earth under his control, one city at a time!

Excel (who soon finds herself assisted by the demure but sickly Princess Hyatt) will do anything to please Il Palazzo and help bring is plans to fruition but standing in his are the F City Department of City Security (who just happen to be made up of Excel and Hyatt's neighbours in their apartment complex).

But that's only the tip of it, there are also alien invasions, an immigrant worker from Colombia who wishes to be re-united with his sexy wife and son, a cute dog that can't seem to escape her fate as ACROSS emergency food source and the superheroic Nabeshin who also happens to the the directors avatar, plus a whole host of others who will find themselves connected to the crazy goings on in the battle ground that is F City, F Prefecture.

Recommended Viewing Age: Older Teens (Approx 16+) and up- Some of the humour may well be in bad taste for some people starting with Hyatt constantly coughing up blood, an allusions to a dog possibly being someones dinner to a character that takes too much interest in pre-pubescent girls.

The fanservice for the most part is not that heavy until the infamous 'Going Too Far' episode where you do get some full frontal nudity. That episode was deemed non broadcastable at the time, but personally I didn't think it was that bad. Then again the boundaries of taste have been pushed further since then. The most contentious issues would be the Lolicon doctors more carnal desires coming further into focus and Hyatt's coughing up of blood being taken to the extreme.

Action Level: Medium- For a comedy series, Excel Saga features it's fair share of action, all of it completely over the top and sending up various action genres from Jungle Warfare to Mecha to Super Sentai amongst a whole host of other parodies.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Fairly Low- Whilst there are some characters that can be deemed to be moe, they are basically just satire of typical 'moe' character tropes. For instance Ropponmatsu 2 the cat-girl robot is a blatant send up of cute/moe done to the extreme, whilst the constantly dying Hyatt is an extreme version of the frail, softly spoken girl.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Considering that this series came out during the turn of the millennium and that it's also a comedy series, the art and animation isn't all that bad. It's not spectacular and pretty but it doesn't have to be and there are times where the relatively low budget style works to the series self-deprecating advantage.

Music: Love (Loyalty) performed by the Excel Girls (Yumiko Kobayashi and Mikako Takahashi) is an energetic ear worm of an opener, with lyrics that mirror Excels rather unrewarded feelings towards Lord Il Palazzo. The song also appears a few times as an insert song, with the Excel Girls appearing as 'cheap knock-offs' of Excel and Hyatt.

The ending theme is one of the strangest yet most brilliant ending themes ever produced for an anime. Menchi's Bolero of Sorrow features the dog Menchi barking out an Enka ballad, whilst some random female character reads out the intended lyrics, which are about she would like to be killed, should the choice ever be taken by Excel and Hyatt to actually eat her as their emergency food ration.

Plot and Characters: Well to be honest the plot and characters of Excel Saga are not to be taken at all seriously, it is basically made up of a bunch of seemingly random and nonsensical sub plots, that all end up being loosely tied to one another. The recurring characters and subplots include.....

* The designated main character of the series is Excel, loyal but useless member of ACROSS, who assisted by Hyatt tries to carry out the orders of her beloved Lord Il Palazzo.

* The cute dog Menchi, desperate to escape her fate as ACROSS emergency food source. The few times she does manage to escape (before inevitably ending up back where she started), she ends up having adventures that involve her former owner.

* In opposition to Across are the Department of City Security, lead by the shadowy government figure Dr Kapabu, who ends up hiring three flat mates that don't like each other (one of which Watanabe happens to be infatuated by Hyatt, though he only knows her as Miss Ayasugi)- little do they know that their civil service job will see them end up as 'Power Rangers'.

* Lolicon doctor Gojo Shiouji, who develops a series of female androids known as Ropponmatsu that join the fight on the side of the Department of City Security.

* Pedro the immigrant worker who wishes to be reunited with his sexy wife and son.

* The Great Will of the Microcosm a floating deus ex machina, who gets involved with Pedro, a relationship that soon finds themself in trouble with a shadowy figure known, simply known as 'That Man'.

* Nabeshin the avatar of director Shinchiro Watanabe, that also happens to be an epic superhero.

* The Puuchu's an invading force of 'cute' aliens, that communicate in 'pokemon' speak, and turn 'ugly' whenever they are killed.

* The mangaka Koshi Rikdo being in conflict with the animators re the adaptation of his manga into an anime.

Excel Saga's humour is basically a mix of running gags and parodies, all delivered in one purposefully random mess. The send-up's range from old favourites such as Super Sentai, mecha space opera's, the obligatory swimming pool episode and dating sims to stuff such as the Visual Kei rock movement in Japan, to western style animation to shows that feature talking animals amongst a whole list of others too long to list. The Excel Saga anime even sends up itself, pointing out that it's a shoddy adaptation of the source material.

Analysis: Quack Experimental Anime Excel Saga, to give it it's full title is 26 episodes of random insanity. If you're looking for a series that has a logical plot, then you're looking at the wrong show- because this is one show that was fully intended to be as nonsensical as possible.

A lot of people may well be put off by the hyperactive energy and the sheer randomness of the show during the initial episodes- something that is encapsulated by the show's titular character Excel. Excel is the genki girl turned up to eleven- an excessively loud, extremely dumb motormouth who is in all intents and purposes designed to be annoying.

If however you get used to Excel and accept the fact that pretty much nothing in this show makes sense, then you may start to realise just how brilliant some of the parodies and send-ups of various tropes truly are. Even if everything doesn't hit home for you, there is so much going on here, that at least something should be able to tickle your funny bone in most of the episodes (unless you really are one of those people devoid of a sense of humour).

It probably does help to be a seasoned anime watcher and be familiar with a variety of cliches and popular genres, for much of the show's comedy to work and even then it would probably take repeat viewings for many of the references to make sense or for some of the more subtle jokes to come through. But as I said there is so much going on here, that even if something will go over your head, the jokes come so thick and fast that it's virtually impossible not to be left even slightly amused by Excel Saga.

Obviously the more physical slapstick comedy and the bad taste humour is what is going to get noticed first and it's those elements that will either bring the biggest laughs or turn people off, but if you are willing to delve a bit further beyond the more in your face elements of the show, much more subtle layers of comedy can be found within it's mix.

The original Excel Saga manga written in a post recession 90's Japan, was intended to laugh off a 'depressed and pessimistic' view of the world and the core story and characters are the same. However with the Koshi Rikdo's blessing, director Shinichi Watanabe and the anime production staff were given the freedom to do what they want with the adaptation as long as they kept the basic theme intact.

It has to be said that they gleefully run riot with this freedom, to the point that one of the series biggest running jokes/themes is the conflict between the original mangaka and the animators regarding the creative direction of the series, with both Koshi Rikdo and Shinichiro Watanabe (Nabeshin) featuring as characters.

The only real gripe I would have with the series is the fact that it features two flashback episodes, the first time round it manages to come off as a send-up of flashback fillers but the second time just came off as lazy and that perhaps by the end of the series they were starting to run out of ideas.

Closing Verdict: Comedy is of course a subjective thing and there are those that will dismiss Excel Saga as brash offensive nonsense. But it is so much more than that, and those willing to fully embrace Excel Saga will be rewarded with one of the funniest anime comedies ever produced.

Is the Dub Any Good?: ADV films did the dub, and Jessica Calvallo's performance makes Excel even more annoying (in some ways it's a brilliant performance but it does make the character a bit of a chore to get through during the initial episodes). In fact Calvallo got into the character a bit too much, to the point that she damaged her vocal chords and she had to pull out half way through to be replaced by Larissa Wolcott (who does a fine job of mimicking Calvallo's performance).

On the whole ADV films dub is rather stellar, and they meet the challenge of what could have been a difficult dub to undertake. As well as Calvello/Walcott's brilliantly annoying performance and stepping up to the formidable task of taking on Excel's motormouth, Monica Rial does an equally fine performance as Excel's polar opposite Hyatt, her gentle and weak tones perfect for a character constantly on the verge of her last breath.

Concept: Sengoku Collection features gender bent versions of Japanese historical figures,in particular Warlords from the Sengoku era (warring states period). Though it does expand beyond warlords (notably the poet Basho) and other eras.

Synopsis: Oda Nobunaga a warlord from the Sengoku era is suddenly transported from her time into the modern world. However she is not the only Sengoku era warlord to be transported into our time, and she learns that in order to return to the Sengoku era she needs to collect all the secret treasures in order to return to her home world.Only the one who has collected all the secret treasures can return home, whilst those who have lost their treasures will have to stay in the modern era.

Recommended Viewing Age: Teens (approx 13+) and up- Several characters are not exactly lacking in the chest department and wear fanservicey outfits- designed to show off their ample cleavage. The eye-catch cards in the middle of each episode (where the commercial break would be), feature the main character of each episode in an 'artistic' nude pose.

Sengoku Collection also features (not so) subtle Yuri (Girls Love) undertones with several of the characters hinted to have more than platonic feelings with one another. There's no actual kissing ever involved, but one of the more blatant hints see's one character place her head on a fellow sengoku era samurai's rather ample breasts.

In a more bizarre case of this being for at-least teenagers and up, one of the characters appears to have an orgasm whilst fishing (if you ever decide to watch the penultimate episode of this you will know exactly what I shall be alluding to).

Action Level: Fairly Low- Despite featuring Sengoku era warlords (albeit genderbent, often 'moe' ones), and the fact that the de-facto main character has to defeat all her rivals to collect the so called secret treasures to return home, the series doesn't really feature all that much action- with the final episode only really providing any notable sustained action and a middle two parter arc centred around Hojo Soun.

There are one or two other characters that feature in slightly more action based arcs such as Date Masamune (who gets involved with the Yakuza) and Maeda Keiji (bike riding vigilante) but for the most part the Samurai's new lives are more slice of life than taking lives.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Very High- Right from the start you will know that many of these gender bent warlords were designed with moe appeal in mind- none more so apparent than with Tokugawa Ieyasu who gets turned into a J-Pop idol.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The character designs for the gender bended historical figures (of which there are many) are all unique, varied and attractive, ranging from buxom fanservicey designs all the way to an elementary school kid, all with a variety of hairstyles and hair colours- each character feels unique. It's highly unlikely they have any resemblance to their real historical male counterparts but that's largely irrelevant.

The background art and general animation though, away from the main characters tends to be a bit more inconsistent, it could be said that they dip their toes into a variety of animation styles in keeping with the theme of each episode but the art and animation is noticeably better on some episodes compared to others and many episodes are filled with faceless silhouette background characters, something I myself increasingly smell as being a budget choice rather than an artistic one.

Music: The opening and ending themes used for Sengoku Collection, all end up being catchy and infectious variations on J-Pop. 'Close Your Eyes and Hold Me' by Abcho is an energetic opener of the first half of the series, and whilst I was initially disappointed to see it replaced, the show tune influenced second opener 'Back Into The World' by Taiwanese singer Sweety did end up winning me over.

Sweety also provided the first ending theme and the slightly jazzy 'Unlucky Girl' may well be the most infectious of all the songs. The more electro-pop influenced 'Darling and Madonna' by You Kikkawa takes over as the second ending theme and though it's the weakest of all the songs, it's still not bad and quite catchy in it's own right. The BGM itself tended to be solid but unmemorable.

Plot and Characters: Sengoku Collection is pretty much a collection of stand alone stories, featuring a different gender-bent historical figure of the week (give or take a two parter here or there), showing how they are adjusting to life in the modern era. The main plot of Nobunaga collecting the secret treasures is just there to loosely tie them together, with some putting up more resistance than others when she comes to collect them- and there are actually quite a few episodes where she doesn't even feature.

There is some cross over of characters between several episodes and it also emerges over time that the modern day era people are aware of the Sengoku era Samurai's existence and that they are different, though a full blown X-Men style them and us type scenario never truly emerges.

The self contained stories are a real mixed bag both in content and tone, many of which appear to be homages/parodies of other famous works of film and literature. For instance Date Masamune is involved in a Kill Bill style revenge tale against the Yakuza, whilst Tsukahara Bokuden running a Kendo Dojo is involved in a story that appears to mock documentary maker Michael Moore (complete with blatant parody character Morse) and in particular Bowling For Columbine. Hiraga Gennai becomes an inventor and is involved in a Back To The Future style tale, Toyotomi Hideyoshi is a carefree girl that loves rice and is involved in a rice infused Alice in Wonderland and Takeda Shingan ends up on a Space Station and ends up in a tale very similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

All in all the large expanse of stories and characters range from the amusing- Amago Tsunehisa as a Kindergarten girl involved in a battle over the sandbox (complete with battle maps) to the melancholic- the tale of the unlucky Otani Yoshitsugu and her penpal from America known simply as Angel.

Of the few stories that are more relevant to the main plot Akechi Mitsuhide (who was Nobunaga's faithful servant) becomes a key character, whilst a counter group to Nobunaga is headed by Imagawa Yoshimoto (who actually was defeated by Oda Nobunaga duriing the Sengoku era).

Analysis: Based on a Trading Card Game (something which never fills me with much promise),the premise of Sengoku Collection; gender-bent versions of Sengoku era warlords being transported into the modern day can be seen to be somewhat preposterous and even then it gives up on keeping it to just Sengoku era warlords and just throws out various other historical figures just for the hell of it.

At least it got it's main character right in terms of the Washi thin plot, as the real Oda Nobunaga was the samurai lord who did in fact initiate the unification of Japan during the 16th Century, and thus it's in keeping with this versions gender-bent Oda Nobunaga being the one that is actively after the secret treasures.

The main plot of Oda Nobunaga collecting the 'Secret Treasures' is flimsy and pretty much ignored for most of the series and anyone expecting these Samurai (even if they have been gender bended) to still be bad-ass and reeking havoc in the modern era will be left mostly disappointed. Instead what you are presented with is the (mostly) Samurai trying to adjust to modern life in a variety of ways, with many of their tales featuring less bad-assery than a cake filled episode of <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...1&postcount=23" rel="external nofollow">K-On!</a>

The style and tone for each characters stories also vary wildly from episode to episode, some are melancholic, some a little more action packed, some more comedic and some just down-right weird. And this rather schizophrenic story telling style and the rather episodic nature of the series could well become rather jarring and off putting for many people, and with so many characters involved it becomes hard to become invested in characters that often only turn up in one episode; perhaps a couple more if their deemed important enough to the flimsy main plot line.

However as silly as the concept is, as flimsy as the main plot line is and as the schizophrenic tone is from episode to episode- Sengoku Collection actually ends up being not a bad anime. or the most each of the self contained stories are actually pretty good, and some are even excellent (though the episode each person prefers will depend on their own taste preferences) and within one episode for many of the stories, the character of the week does manage to leave a strong impression despite often never being seen again.

The whole thing with Sengoku Collection, is that if you can accept it for what is its an episodic collection of one off stories, covering various genres and also set aside the silly gender-bent samurai concept, it becomes a pleasantly enjoyable series and though it's also based on a trading card game, I never really got the feeling that this was a blatant 'advertisement' for the game either.

In the end due to the almost episodic nature of Sengoku Collection, it is possible to enjoy this series in which ever order you see fit and to pick and choose which characters and stories appeal to you and for all but the most narrow minded the hit-rate should end up better than the miss-rate.

The flimsy plot also manages to come together at the end with an ending I found to be perfectly satisfying- in the fact that it brought substantial closure to the series whilst also keeping things open for a second series should they wish to do so (apparently there are many more cards in the series to a series two wouldn't be out of the question).

Closing Verdict: Ridiculous premise, a plot written on the back of an image song CD, serious identity issues and based off a trading card game, sounds like a right mess doesn't it?

In the end despite all of the above Sengoku Collection ends up being surprisingly decent and enjoyable- just how enjoyable you will find it will depend on just how open minded you are to various genres of story-telling.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Right Stuf Inc (under their Lucky Penny Entertainment label) have picked up the license for Sengoku Collection, whether or not this means that the series will get a dub release in the future or not remains to be seen.

I keep hoping to see a review of The Skull Man or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I'm enjoying both so far, but I also don't know much about either of their source material. I don't really like review sites, but your reviews never come across as elitist so that's why I almost come back and read them.

I haven't watched Segoku Collection but i've noticed that there are ton of these kinda shows, gendered switched historical figures from japan's past. Some are ok some just seem to be silly like Segoku seems to be.

I watched and really liked, The Ambition of Oda Nobuna. It's a gender switched version like this but more serious in tone but with comedy. Plenty of moe to be found but over all, it's more serious bent is what i liked.

Synopsis: As a child Keitaro Urashima made a promise to a girl that they would both go to Tokyo University together. Despite having not been in touch with the girl since his childhood, Keitaro is determined to keep his promise. Unfortunately Keitaro keeps the failing the entrance exam.

Looking for a change of scenery, in order to help him focus on his studies, he decides to move in with his grandmother at the Hinata Apartments hotel that she owes. Only thing is his grandmother has decided to go on her travels and has left him in charge of what has now become an all-girls dormitory.

Will Keitaro be able to maintain his focus and keep his promise to make it into Tokyo U and could one of the girls that has suddenly been thrust into his newly chaotic life be the girl from the childhood that he made the promise to all those years ago?

Recommended Viewing Age: Teens (approx 13+) and up- The girls take plenty of hot-spring baths but most of the time they’re wrapped in a towel. There are a few panty shot moments scattered around, but for a harem comedy the fanservice levels by comparison to others is pretty mild. Keitaro gets into a few pervy situations, which 99.9% of the time end up with him being punched into the sky.

Action Level: Medium - Bizarrely enough despite being a romantic comedy, Love Hina does feature it’s share of action sequences- these are mainly provided by the sword wielding Motoko or Kaolla who is always coming up with destructive contraptions. Not to mention that the main girl of the series Naru packs a mean punch that Keitaro always happens to be on the end off every episode.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Medium- Despite being a harem series, Love Hina did not give out a particularly strong 'moe' vibe, but then again that may partially have something to do with the now dated art style. Amongst the girls at the Hinata Departments the shy wallflower Shinobu will likely be seen as the most overtly moe by the majority of viewers.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Apparently Love Hina was the first anime, not to include any traditional cell animation, with everything being done on computers, not that you would particularly notice unless you were a technical animation buff.

The art and animation in general is solid enough for a comedy focused series, and in all honesty wouldn’t look too out of place now yet alone at the turn of the millennium when this came out. I would say that the animation quality (especially the background art) does get a little bit of an upgrade for the Christmas and Spring Specials,

Music: Both the opening and ending songs were performed by Megumi Hayashibara. The opening (Sakura Saku) is the one of the most addictive openings I have ever heard, right from the energetic opening organ riff- this one quickly got stuck into my head. The ending theme (Kimi Sae Ireba) is a nicely sung, slightly melancholic ballad.

For the Love Hina Again OVA episodes unfortunately, the two theme tunes for the main series get replaced with two completely forgettable pieces, so forgettable- I’m not even go to put in the effort to look up what they were called and who they were by.

The BGM soundtrack was in my opinion, not outstanding but was fine enough in complementing what was on screen.

Plot and Characters: The main character Keitaro wants to get into Tokyo U because of the promise he made to a girl as a child. Naru is also trying to get into Tokyo U, she also made a promise to someone that she would got to Tokyo U. Could Naru be the girl that Keitaro made the promise to?

Whether she is or not, Naru gradually begins to grow closer to Keitaro, despite seeing him as something of a loser. A classic Tsundere, she spends the whole series fighting the fact that she really likes Keitaro.

The other girls at the Hinata Apartments include the frequently drunk Mitsune ‘Kitsune’ Konno- who also happens to be something of a flirt, practical joker and a gossip.

Motoko Aoyama; an over-serious kendo practioner, that is a heir to a sword-school that is initially fervently against Keitaro becoming the new manager of the all girls dorm- however like fellow Tsundere Naru, she eventually warms up to Keitaro.

Kaolla Su; A Junior High school age foreign exhange student that comes from some far flung Island. Extremely hyperactive and somewhat feral, she also happens to a genius inventor. Rounding out the main five girls is Shinobu Maehara, who comes to live at the Hinata Departments, after running away from home during the break up of her parents- she develops a crush on Keitaro, but being several years his younger knows that her love will never be requited.

Other key characters include the chain smoking Haruka Urushima, Keitaro’s aunt, that run the Hinata tea-room, Noriyasu Seta a professor at Tokyo University that specialises in archeology that has connections to Naru, Haruka and Kitsune and his adopted American elementary school age daughter Sarah McDougall. Keitaro’s sister Kanako becomes a key protagonist during the three episode Love Hina Again OVA series.

Last but no mean least in importance to the romantic drama that unfolds is Mutsumi Otohime, like Keitaro she keeps failing the Tokyo U entrance exam and is also something of a Klutz. She is not shy in her own feelings towards Keitaro and they may well hold a past connection together, that would seriously threaten Naru getting together with Keitaro. She is also the intial owner of Tama-chan, the pet turtle that becomes the resident pet/mascot at the Hinata Apartments.

Much of the comedy to be found in Love Hina comes from Keitaro accidentally getting into perverted/awkward situations and one of the girls (usually Naru or Motoko) over-reacting to it and sending him into the sky. Kitsune’s scheming, Kaolla’s crazy contraptions, Mutumi’s dizziness and Seta’s terrible driving are also played up for comedic effect.

Love Hina also presents plenty of absurd situations, such as the minor character Kentaro (briefly a rival to Keitaro) turning up in a flying car and such like.

Analysis: I’m not going to beat around the bush here with this one….

Never before have two main characters in an anime pissed me off so much as Keitaro Urashima and Naru Narusegawa. Romantic comedies live and die on the growing relationship between their main protagonists and in Love Hina’s case it dies.

Love Hina wants you to get behind ‘Mr Average’ Keitaro doggedly trying to realise his promise of getting into Tokyo U, but I just wanted him to grow some balls and stand up to the abuse he was getting from the girls, especially Naru who despite constantly beating him up, becomes the main object of his affection. In his defence, he does come across as a decent sort, even if he is a dumbass for putting up with all of the girls crap, especially Naru. The same cannot be said however for Naru herself...

Instantly going to the very top of my most unlikeable characters of all time list, Naru Narusegawa is a character I wished would get punched off screen, never to be seen again. Despite being presented as the main girl, I wished Keitaro would see sense and stop putting up with her bullshit. Despite being presented as being academically more intelligent than Keitaro, she’s even more emotionally defective. Always acting on instinct, rather than looking at things logically- whenever Keitaro does something klutzy, her modus operandi is to punch Keitaro across the room or high into the sky. It’s mildly funny once or twice but it gets but it gets old fast. Naru also spends the entire series, in self denial about her feelings for Keitaro, and it’s only really in the specials and OVA’s that we finally seem to get some progress.

If one unreasonable Tsundere wasn’t enough, the series also decides to throw in another with Motoko. In Motoko’s defence though she does at least have a backstory, that explains why she is, like she is around men and she’s generally presented as being strong-willed but socially inept. At the very least I could buy into her reasons behind being a Tsundere, unlike Naru.

As for the rest of the main cast Kitsune is fine enough as the flirty busy-body, Kaolla is basically a clone of Ed from <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...24&postcount=9" rel="external nofollow">Cowboy Bebop</a> and Shinobu comes across as the nicest and most reasonable of all the girls in the Hinata Departments, but is a romantic non-factor due to being of Junior High age, where as Keitaro is a high school graduate.

The calming Mutsumi is probably the most effective of all the characters though in Love Hina, she provides an effective counter-foil to the unreasonable Naru, and at least provides a modicum of hope that Keitaro might see sense and perhaps consider trying to be with more compatible girl instead of one that physically abuses him all the time.

Love Hina is also chock full of filler, padding out the story with surreal comedy such as Kaolla having magical powers- that for the most part comes across as just stupid, rather than funny.

To top things off, this is actually a series where the mildness of the fanservice levels is actually a detrement. At least if the fanservice was a little more risque it would serve as a distraction from how repetitive or just plain stupid the attempts at comedy are or how it completely fails as a love story.

The only significantly good thing about Love Hina, is the catchy opening theme, and that provides no justification to endure this most tedious of romantic/harem comedies.

Closing Verdict: Love Hina has a reputation of being a ‘classic’ of the harem genre, but I’m afraid it left me cold- the comedy is cliched and repetitive and the romance element is even more frustrating. Though there is admittedly even worse out there, it's baffling how Love Hina managed to get such a lofty reputation in the first place- as it ranks at the very top of the most frustrating series I have ever had to encounter and should be held up as a example of how NOT to do a romantic comedy.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Bandai had the American license for this when it was released, and L.A based voice talent was used for the dub. The dub ends up being not terrible, but not exactly great either. Despite my dislike for the main characters Derek Stephen Prince (Keitaro) and Dorothy Elias Fahn (Naru) are fine enough in the roles. Wendee Lee basically mimics the performance of Melissa Fahn’s Ed from Cowboy Bebop and adds an Indian accent over the top, whilst Barbara Goodson gives Kitsune, a somewhat bizarre hick southern accent.

Anyway as I said in my TEW diary thread, real life is taking priority at the moment which is why things have died down for me here on the GDS forums. However I should have a new review up within the next few days.

What I will say is that my next review is for a series that for me is the antithesis to the mediocrity of Love Hina and re-affirmed why I love anime as a medium of entertainment <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
