And yes, Shinji's wangst makes me want to beat him within an inch of his life, it's THAT annoying to me. I DO make a distinction between angst, which is fine for drama and story's sake, and wangst, which just makes me want to commit violent acts on said person just to make it stop. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I actually agree with you in that Tsundere done RIGHT can be rather entertaining. The Blonde in the Nisekoi/False Love is the archtype, but she neither physically assaults the guy and the guy snarls right back at her, which is a breath of fresh air considering we had a string of what I call the hyper violent Tsunderes there for a while. Oh and if you don't like Naru, you'll be like me and absolutely LOATHE the little pink haired cockroach from Familiar of Zero as bad as Naru is THAT ONE is worse in ways, IMO.</div></blockquote> I never liked Evagelion. I'm caught up with Nisekoi manga and as the series goes on the guy snarls less but the girl hitting him become less of a thing so it evens out. One of the scenes later is the girl hitting him out of instinct and apologizing right after it. The tsundere attitude becomes more verbal than physical. In Familiar of Zero Louise (pink hair) is more sadist than tsundere and I would feel bad for Saitou if I didn't have a feeling that the character is a masochist. But yeah that show is a lot of women of male violence from Louise so its easy to hate her. Plus its her fault that Saitou got transported to her world and she still treats him like shit. I just wished a character would get pissed off when stuff like that happens. The only one I can think of is Marche from the Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced video game who understands this isn't his world and wants to return home even if it means ruining the happy illusions his friends and brother(who regains the ability to walk) are living and make them face reality.

Everyone will have stuff they love more than others. I loved EVA and had no trouble finding people to cheer for. Shinji to get a spine (thoughI easily understand why alot of people hate him), Rei to let more of her feelings through, Misato to save the day. I never really found anything to dislike about Misato, as broken as she was, she was also there to help people and willing to put herself in harms way to do it. Of course, I've watched all of Ranma and loved it as well.

I think the one character that I can find hate in my heart for was Incognito in the Hellsing TV show. Pretty much all the changes Gonzo made were terrible and Incognito was the worst. It's not that he was a jerk or obnoxious. He was a bad character and an unnecessary change to the storyline.

Plot: Keima Katsuragi is a master of dating-sim's, who wants nothing more than to immerse himself within the digital world chasing 2D girlriends. But when the 'Capturing God' inadvertently answers a mysterious e-mail from an unknown sender, Keima is suddenly forced into a contract ( where he has to win the heart of real life girls in order to help the cheerfully enthusiastic demon Elsie (who has mistaken Keima's dating sim prowess for being a real life cassanova) capture 'lost souls' that have escaped from hell and taken up residence within the 'capture target' girls. Animation Quality/Art Style: The World God Only Knows, is a something of a Meta-anime (self referretial), so naturally with it's self reference being based upon Otaku culture and stereotypes, the art style is the typical Bishojo/Moe style that is admittedly over-used but the series knows this and any other art style would not have worked. That being said the colours are vibrant, the characters are easy on the eye (if this art style doesn't offend you) and the animation quality is generally up to expected standards. Music: The self titled opening song by Oratorio, sung entirely in English is a rather interesting song, in that it's poppy yet really quite progressive at the same time- in fact the portion played in the opening title's is only one part of an 8 minute song, divided into five different parts (sort of like a J-Pop Bohemian Rhapsody), the whole 8 minute version is a bit of a mess but the part they chose for the opening titles is actually pretty good and works with a visually captivating opening title sequence. Ending song Kami Nomi Zo Shiru Sekai is a cute J-Pop song sung by the various Seiyu that play Elsie and the 'capture target' girls. One of the target girls Kanon is a J-Pop idol, and thus we also get a variety of her songs.... which whilst utterly cheesy are admittedly well crafted and pretty damn catchy. Each girl has an insecurity about them that, needs to be resolved before the lost soul can be freed- for instance you have a J-Pop Idol insecure about becoming 'invisible', a quiet library girl that struggles to express herself vocally etc. In a lot of ways TWGOK, is less of a romance, and more of a detective series, with Keima and Elsie having to find what the girls insecurity is and finding a way to help that girl overcome it. And despite Keima wooing various girls, it's not really a harem series- as once Keima has won the girls heart, they forget about what has happened and Keima/Elsie move onto the next target. The 'drama' involved though with TWGOK is definitely not what you call heavy drama, even if some of the girls stories are designed to tug at your heart-strings a little. Comedy: TWGOK mines it's comedy from the stereotypes of it's characters, from it's anti-social galge game obsessed protagonist to the various Bishojo game archetypes for the various personalities for the capture target girls throughout the show. It is of course all wrapped up in a show that is somewhat parodying the world it's main protagonist inhabits, without every really being that cynical or biting about it. Ultimately TWGOK is a show that pokes fun at Otaku culture and Bishojo game stereotypes but does so with an obvious affection for it's comedic targets. Moe/Kawaii: Self-referential parody or not, the girls in this series are basically a bunch of Bishojo/Moe stereotypes, and for the most part those stereotypes are played pretty straight- you see in reference to the comedy section above, the comedy in TWGOK comes from the fact that the girls are so stereotypical, with Keima often making reference to this during his missions to capture the girls hearts. Adult Content (Fanservice etc): The most fanservicey character, isn't one of the girls but Keima's big boobed 'hot mom' who does get a bath scene in one of the episodes....but in general though the fanservice on display is mild. Analysis: For the most part the various 'capture target' arcs, are put together pretty well and though the various girls are parodies of various Bishojo/Moe stereotypes- there stories are quite captivating and only the most heartless will not at least be somewhat moved about at least one of the girls stories. The inversion of sorts of the Harem concept, is also pretty neat with each girl given her moment to shine, before moving onto the next one. The series protagonist of an anti-social galge gamer, is written with just enough bite to make you aware that this character is far from perfect as a human being, but Keima is also given just enough humanity to make you at least care that he succeeds and perhaps ultimately come to the realisation that real girls are better than 2D ones! And throughout this first season, there does seem to be a gradual thawing of his attitude- even if his obsession for dating sims never waivers! In general the episodes between the various 'capture target' arcs aren't as strong, and feel exactly like filler- most disappointingly the series also ends with one of these filler episodes- though admittedly it would be more of a let-down if the entire anime ended on such an episode- at least we know there is a second season coming. The very first arc also feels rushed and is by far the weakest of the four 'girl' arcs throughout the show. Which makes you think that an extra episode could have been added to the first arc, and one of the filler episodes dropped. Also the series pretty much lives or dies on the fact that it's a self referential comedy about galge/dating sim games and otaku culture, and the various stereotypes and tropes that come with it. If you don't even know what a galge game is or are just turned off by Moe/Bishojo lead anime, then TWGOK definitely won't be for you. Closing Verdict: The World God Only Knows has just enough affection and heart within it's storyline and characters, to make it more than just a self-aware parody of a Bishojo lead romantic comedy. Of course there will be some who will feel that the satire is not biting enough, and if you're unaware or turned off by Moe etc.....then this series won't be for you. For those who can enjoy this sort of thing it's more the pacing issues that let it down. Grade: C Is The Dub Any Good?: Sentai film works did the dub for this, and here they bring back together an English dub pairing that most fans will know for Full Metal Panic! in the main roles of Keima and Elsie....Namely Chris Patton and Luci Christian. Whilst that isn't entirely a bad thing, I couldn't help but think of Sousuke Sagara every time Keima was talking... no such qualms about Luci Christian's performance as Elsie though- I've mentioned on a number of occasions how she truly is one of the best in the business, mostly due to the fact that her range is so versatile. Incidently the FMP! deja vu does not end there, with Hilary Haag's voice for the final capture target girl, being somewhat eerily similar to Tessa Testarossa. All in all the dub is solid enough, but it shouldn't be making me reminisce about another/completely unrelated anime, even if that other anime was an excellent series.</div></blockquote> Seasons 2 and 3 ( as well as season 1) are all on Crunchyroll. I have just recently watched this and it was surprisingly entertaining. So much so that I actually went to go read the manga to catch up on the events after season 3 ends. It does a nice twist on the standard harem theme.

(17 episodes into FMA and it's living up to the hype thus far, so if it stays the course expect a positive review).

I have no right to do such in any case. You got things out of Eva, that's great and I'm glad you enjoyed it. My problems with it prevent me from ever doing so. The Following are my opinions only and should be taken or dismissed as such. Healthy debate is fine, but I won't get into arguments. It's not worth it. It seems to me that whenever Shinji's on screen he's either rolling over for someone or throwing the world's biggest 'oh poor me, pity me.' party..until the next time he throws one. As for Rei, I HONESTLY don't get the fandom's near obsession with this one. To me all she comes across Gendo's little robot that kinda, maybe, sorta, shows hints at a personality. And Damnit girl speak up! <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Misato, I have no real opinion of to be honest. I can't root for her nor do I sympathize or empathize with her. For me she's just kinda there. Asuka's just a severely mentally damaged (censored) and I dislike her immensely. Again my opinions only. for me none of them are worth getting behind without them spending years upon years in therapy. As for Ranma 1/2, I tried to like it. But the characters just turned me off really quick. Of note here I'm talking about the anime series, not the manga. I could go in depth about the characters, but I won't. Really quickly though about the two main characters, Ranma himself comes off as a prideful,arrogant,misogynistic 'jock'(I say jock in the worst meaning it has.) and I don't get the fandom's like of the guy. I'm clearly missing the memo here. Akane is naive,overaggressive,overly sensitive, and generally has no thought about opinions not her own. Is it entirely their fault for being this way? No and I'll be the first to admit it. That doesn't mean I want to watch episode after episode of 'em either. I grant that people like these two series and are genuinely entertained by them. I also grant that As an American I'm probably missing the cultural background to fully 'get' the creator's intentions. I'm glad for them because they're getting something out of the series that clearly I am not and will never get. Ah well, to each their own I suppose.

* ESE stands for Earth Star Entertainment. It appears to be written by a team of writers, with Natsuki as the primary illustrator.

Synopsis: When Sakura Hagiwara the centre vocalist for idol group Sweet Diva and her best friend/rival Elena Miyazawa visit a Professional Wrestling gym, they accidentally offend one of thw wrestlers Rio Kazama.

When Kazama makes an example out of Elena and mocks the pop idols, Sakura vows to get into the ring with Kazama and avenge the humiliation of her friend. Sakura will learn that being a professional wrestler will test her both physically and mentally and that victories do not come easily. However despite the hardships she will endure, she will come to love Professional Wrestling and when she decides to continue, it's a decision that does rest easily with those who would rather see her return to her former life as the centre vocalist of Japan's biggest Idol group.

Recommended Viewing Age: Approx 15 and up- Skimpy lycra, big breasts and camera angles in certain positions whenever one of the wrestlers find themselves in a submission hold- Wanna Be The Strongest In The World is a series that really flaunts the fanservice. But what else did you expect, when this series is made by the same studio that brought you other ecchi leaning fare such as <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=349" rel="external nofollow">Elfen Lied </a>and Queen Blade.

Action Level: Fairly High (Sports)- As this is an anime based upon Professional Wrestling, it's pretty obvious that most of the action in this anime is going to be the wrestling matches. The matches get more epic, with more variation within the moves being shown in the matches as the series progresses, Sakura's final match of the series is really intense and is decided with a really spectacular move. Just be prepared to suffer (along with Sakura) through a lot of Boston Crabs early in the series.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Fairly High- I suppose that cute pop idols trying their hand at wrestling, could be perceived as being as being somewhat moe, even one of the characters is called Moe!

Animation Quality/Art Style: The character design's are as to be expected Bishojo and for the most part very busty...Pretty much every wrestler seems to be blessed/cursed (depending on how you look at these things) with a backbreaking F-Cup.

Some of the wrestling action is pretty well animated, with plenty of recognisable moves, and any Puroresu fans out-there will recognise that many of the matches take place at the famous wrestling venue Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

However the art and animation is unfortunately not without it's faults, there is unfortunately too much re-used stock footage (you will get fed up of seeing Sakura being put into a Boston Crab by the end of this series) and the digitally imposed crowd during the wrestling events often looks a bit odd.

Music: Opening 'Beautiful Dreamer' by Kyoko Narumi, isn't the most memorable anime opening song but it does have an 'old school' feel and suits the series central theme of striving to be the best. The closing song 'Fan Fanfare' is sung by the seiyuu for Sweet Diva (as is to be expected) and is a pretty good facsimile of the kind of cheesy but catchy pop that those sort of bands tend to churn out. It does however seem to be the only song (and accompanying dance routine) in their catalogue!

As for the BGM, there really is not much of one except for the wrestlers theme songs, which if you have seen a fair amount of Puroresu, will recognise as being pretty accurate in the style of tunes that are used. Overall the music here isn't outstanding but it works pretty well within the context of the anime.

Plot and Characters: The main character Sakura is the number one idol in Sweet Diva, so when Rio Kazama mocks pop idols as 'weak', she takes offence and challenges Rio to a match, though without realising it she agrees to a Caballera contra Cabellera (Hair vs Hair) match.

Though Sakura is naturally fit and athletic, she soons learns that Pro Wrestling is not easy and that she will have to endure a lot of hardship before she can be a success. Throughout the series she overcomes various hurdles and eventually comes to actually Pro Wrestling, rather than seeing it as means to prove herself/battle for the pride of Sweet Diva.

Elena Miyazawa is the number 2 in Sweet Diva, she is Sakura's best friend but is constantly striving to usurp Sakura as the centre vocalist. When Elena is injured/mocked by Rio, it is that turn of events that sparks Sakura into taking up the challenge of becoming a Pro Wrestler. However when Elena becomes centre vocalist of Sweet Diva by default, it leaves her feeling empty, as she wants to prove herself to be better than Sakura.

The first actual wrestler we meet in the series is Rio Kazama, part of the Berserk Wrestling Gym/Federation that Sakura ends up becoming part of. She becomes Sakura's initial rival after perceiving the 'Sweet Diva' idols to be mocking wrestling by mucking about in 'her' ring.

Also part of the Berserk gym is Misaki Toyoda, their ace wrestler and a former pop idol like Sakura, who has her own generational rival in Juri Sanada that runs rival organisation Miyabi. Consistently seen with Misaki is the ringside reporter Kanae Fujishita, who was once a wrestler herself but had to retire through injury.

Other major wrestlers that make an appearance are Jackal Tojo, the world champion and Misaki's mentor and Blue Panther a mysterious wrestler that attacks members of Berserk and ends up becoming a major rival for Sakura. Joining later in the series is Moe Fukuoka (the niece of Berserk owner Seiichi Inoba) a highschool karate prodigy that is inspired to try her hand at pro wrestling when see's one of Sakura's matches.

Fleshing out the cast of characters are other members of Berserk, Sweet Diva and the Sweet Diva fanboys, in particular their bespectacled president who sticks by Sakura, even when she is going through hard times in the ring.

Analysis: As both a fan of anime and Japanese Pro Wrestling (Puroresu) this was a series that immediately appealed to me, so did Wanna Be The Strongest deliver a satisfying pro wrestling story through the medium of anime.

Sort of.......

I will get the most glaring weakness out of the way first, and that's the large amounts of fanservice. Personally it didn't bother me, but the constant crotch and cleavage shots, alongside the anguished cries of the wrestlers (mostly the protagonist Sakura) will be a real deal breaker for some early in the series....And some of Sakura's cries, don't just sound like one's of anguish either! If you're sharing your property with other people this is definitely a series where it would be advisable to invest in a pair of headphones, in case some walks past and gets the wrong impression.

However if you can make it past the fanservice and Sakura's whimpering whenever she finds herself in a submission hold, you will be rewarded with a solid story arc, with the protagonist gradually building up, rather than being super powered from the get-go and laying waste to her opponents with ease.

Though that was the right way to go, some of the pacing of the arc could have been better handled. There's an episode where Sakura is constantly tapping out to the Boston Crab, and whilst this is a realistic portrayal of a rookie wrestler (most Japanese 'young lions' lose all the time, and most often to the Boston Crab), it does grate watching it after a whole episode.

One of the frustrating things about the Boston Crab episode (and to be honest for the entire way submission holds are dealt with throughout) is that there is far too much emphasis on trying to get to the ropes, it's like whoever is training these wrestlers does not teach them how to do reversals or try to fight their way by striking at their opponent.

The series really picks up/turns a corner after the half way point, where Sakura makes her breakthrough, though after being portrayed as a struggling jobber for the first half of the series, she is suddenly putting on what must be 30 minute plus 5 star classics and busting out a jaw-dropping move-set. Perhaps with two cour length (24 episodes, as opposed to 12) we would have seen Sakura's development be paced a little better and perhaps seen a few more opponents for her to overcome, before her more significant contests, later on in the series.

Any wrestling fan will be able to recognise plenty of wrestling moves being used in the series, and by the end they had a good mix of throws (suplexes etc), submission holds and high flying manouevres, I would have liked to have seen a little more brawling/striking represented in the matches...the matches all tended to follow the same pattern (submission holds, then standard throws, then finishers)

Unless you're blissfully ignorant or too young to understand, you should know that the matches in Pro Wrestling are pre-determined, however kayfabe is alive and Wanna Be The Strongest In The World presents the wrestling matches as legitimate sporting contests. It's not really a knock against the series but it's something viewers should be aware of, if they go into watching this.

The weaving together of Sakura's life as a Pop Idol and as a Pro Wrestler, was actually handled really well and Elena you have an interesting supporting character, that is constantly striving to be better than her friend.

Rio also made for a solid first antagonist, being mean enough that you wouldn't to see Sakura overcome her but also being sympathetic enough in the fact that one could relate to her having pride in wanting to defend Pro-Wrestling from those who did not appear to be taking it seriously. The fact that she is so mean at the start, only spurs Sakura on to become that much stronger. Without the adversity that she is faced with at the start, Sakura would have made a much duller protagonist.

Whilst some of the supporting characters seem like background wallpaper (the rest of Sweet Diva), no character seems completely needless or irritates- though again if Wanna Be The Strongest In The World had more episodes, we may have gotten a chance to look more into some of the supporting characters. The series only really scratches the surface of the relationship between the older wrestlers (Jackal Tojo, Misaki, Juri and the retired Sanae) because it is primarily focused upon Sakura (as should be expected with only 12 episodes)

After a shaky first half, Wanna Be The Strongest In The World grows to be a much better series in the second half and does manage to bring a satisfying (if slightly cheesy) conclusion with an emotionally charged final contest and one that does bring some closure to Sakura's character development, though at the same time it also leaves things open enough to continue the story. Though I have a strong feeling, that this will be it for the anime adaptation and that should one want to continue with Sakura's wrestling adventures that will need to have continue reading the manga, as is so often the case but as potential 'read the manga' endings go, this one wasn't too frustrating.

Closing Verdict: Wanna Be The Strongest In The World has it's issues, some of which will admittedly be a major deal breaker for some after about the few episodes. However if you are fan of Puroresu (Japanese pro wrestling) or are just attracted to a simple but effective sports drama centred upon the old adage of hard work/adversity making you grow stronger, then certainly give this series a look.

Is the Dub Any Good?: In something of a surprise Funimation picked up the license for this series. I say a surprise, as this is the sort of somewhat 'trashy' Otaku pandering fare that Funimation usually passes over and that Sentai usually ends up picking up.

I cannot actually comment on the quality of the dub here, as I've not heard it- but the cast is mostly made up of relative newcomers (including one 'import' from the L.A dubbing scene in Cristina Vee, who has been cast as Moe Fukuoka) and a few experienced Texas dubbing campaigners such as Monica Rial (cast as Elena).

I thought at first that the main role of Sakura, had gone to a total newbie in Elizabeth Lewis, but as it turns out it's just Lindsay Seidel working under an alias (as these voice actors sometimes do, when shows have Ecchi levels of fanservice).

Note: The word Hanamaru means flower circle, in Japanese kindergarten's receiving a flower circle for your work, is the equivalent of getting a gold star in western schools.

Synopsis: Naozumi Tsuchida is fresh out college and has decided to enter the world of work as a Kindergarten teacher. However his life as a teacher is immediately made more challenging by Anzu who has taken it upon herself to openly flirt with Naozumi and designate him as her future husband.However Tsuchida only really has eyes for fellow teacher Nanako Yamamoto.

Can Tsuchida succeed as a Kindergarten teacher and be able to get Yamamoto to notice him as more than just a friend, whilst also delicately handling Anzu's crush on him.

Recommended Viewing Age: Approx 12 and up- Despite the Kindergarten setting, this isn't really a series to be watched by little ones, rather teenagers and above who want to reminisce about a more innocent and carefree time during their life, this is mostly due to some light fanservice, and some at times surprisingly suggestive humour where the Kindergartners are talking about subjects they shouldn't really be talking about at that age.

Action Level: Non Existent- No one should be expecting any sort of action from a series called Hanamaru Kindergarten, and unsurprisingly there really isn't any thrilling action to speak of.

Moe/Kawaii Level: High- Don't deny it these Kindergarten aged kids are drawn cute, and they act cute.....there is little doubt that this series is not designed to be anything other than adorable.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The background art for Hanamaru Kindergarten is not what you would call amazing, but it's bright pastel colours and relative simplicity suit the cheerful mood of the show and it's Kindergarten setting.

The character designs are more of a mixed bag of sweets, on the bland side of things are the character designs for the adult characters. Tsuchida looks like he has just come out of factory of generic anime male harem protagonists (ridiculously average looking guy with glasses and medium length black hair), whilst the object of his affection Yamamoto with her long reddish brown hair looks as though she has come out of the generic bishojo factory.

The toddlers on the other hand seemed to have more effort put into them and were undeniably cute. Anzu is immediately made more striking by her two tone hair, that sticks up at the front, whilst the eccentric Hiiragi is memorable for her big blank eyes that give her a mysterious quality.

Music: The opener Aozora Triangle (sung by the Seiyuu for the three featured kindergarten girls Anzu, Hiiragi and Koume) is cute, energetic and subtly rocking. It's both catchy and suits the mood of the show.

Each episode features a different ending, with songs ranging from twee laid back indie pop to more energetic numbers. Whilst I'm sure there were some songs that would stick with you after several listens, the constant changing of the song for each episode, meant that none of them were able to be particularly memorable. However it was an interesting experiment coupled with the varying art styles displayed at the end of each episode.

Plot and Characters: The plot for Hanamaru Kindergarten is not really anything more than what we would be the synopsis on the back of a DVD/Blu-Ray Box. So this is very much a character lead slice of life/comedy. But who are these characters exactly and why should we either care about them or be amused by them?

Tsuchida, is a slightly meek and geeky guy that is a games otaku (he's consistently late for work due to staying up late the night before playing video games) and also likes looking at gravure idol mags, this coupled with the fact that he is consistently seen looking at Yamamoto's chest, gets him the nickname of 'breast man'. Tsuchida's reasons for becoming a Kindergarten teacher are also somewhat shallow, in the fact that it would get him near to working with young women. However despite his short-comings Tsuchida develops a natural rapport with the children. Anzu's affection for him is based on the fact that she can that he is a kind and caring person.

Fellow teacher Nanako Yamamoto beautiful, big breasted, cheerful and kind. There is little wonder as to why she would be the object of Tsuchida's affection. Everyone else can see that Tsuchida wants to be more than just friends (including the toddlers!) but Yamamoto is completely oblivious to Tsuchida's feelings. Apparently though this isn't just exclusive to Tsuchida, when it comes to romance Yamamoto is completely ignorant to the signals. This frustrates her younger sister, however we learn later on that her sister is just as clueless when it comes to recognising that a male colleague wants to be more than just friends.

Anzu the girl that develops as crush on Tsuchida, also happens to be the daughter of Sakura a high school companion of Tsuchida's and having a crush on your teacher is something that happens to run in the family, with Sakura ending up marrying her high school art teacher. Away from her somewhat possessive crush towards Tsuchida, Anzu is a cheerful and energetic girl who has a tendency to perform risky, unsafe actions (such as climbing a tree).

The bulk of Hanamaru Kindergartens comedy is mined from the love triangle of sorts between Tsuchida, Anzu and Yamamoto, with Anzu managing to turn the most innoxious activity into some kind of fantastical flirtation with Tsuchida, whilst Tsuchida himself is consistently thwarted in getting further with Yamamoto due to her unbeliveable ignorance towards his feelings.

The two other most featured Kindergarten children, are Anzu's closest friends Hiiragi and Koume. The daughter of a scientist, Hiiragi is a highly intelligent bookworm (she's able to come out with facts that even the adults would struggle to know) that wears a consistently deadpan expression. However despite rarely smiling she is portrayed to be a happy child and she shows her fun side by her various cosplay outfits.

Rounding out the trio of main toddlers is the shy and clumsy Koume, even though she is more in the background that either Anzu or Hiiragi for most of the episodes, she does have a few episodes where she comes more to the fore-front, especially a sports day centred episode that also features her doting older (high school age) brother.

Later we see the appearance of another love rival to Anzu for Tsuchida's affection, in the form of Hinagiku, who happens to be the daughter of a head of a Yakuza clan. Hinagiku falls in love with Tsuchida when he helps her home after her sandal breaks, inspiring her to transfer to Hanamaru to be nearer to Tsuchida.

Rounding out the significant cast is Tsuchida's younger sister Satsuki, who has something of a brother complex, in the fact that she is consistently looking for praise and attention from her older brother and becomes jealous when her brother gets close to Yamamoto.

Analysis: Hanamaru Kindergarten is a collaboration between the same studio that brought you Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL,<a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=155" rel="external nofollow"> Gurren Lagann</a> and <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=382" rel="external nofollow">Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt</a> and the director of the first Full Metal Alchemist anime adaptation, so a cutesy slice of life anime is just about the last thing you would expect them to tackle.

However studio's/directors that don't usually handle a certain type of story/source material can bring a fresh approach to things. For the most part though, there's nothing really here to suggest that this would not have been done by another studio, usually more associated with this sort of anime. The most we actually get to see of Gainax leanings towards quirky inventiveness is during the various ending credits which explore varying art styles, rather than during the meat of the show itself.

Saying all that, there is one other hallmark, that points towards this being handled by Gainax, and that's the frustrating/inconclusive ending, though I'm convinced that on their later shows the studio is just pulling out unsatisfying endings because that is what is expected of them and to be honest in some ways the ending kind of works in the fact that the show is pitched more as a comedy than as a romance.

The main question to be asked is, Is Hanamaru Kindergarten funny? Well I would say that like a lot of these cute slice of life shows, it consistently raises a smile but barely raises a chuckle. It's warm, cosy, fun and the kindergarten kids are undeniably cute, but it rarely manages to squeeze full blown hilarity out of the situations.

What Hanamaru Kindergarten does handle well is the relationship between Tsuchida and Anzu. Anzu's 'flirting' always comes off as fanciful misunderstandings and not once is it presented more than a childish crush. More importantly Tsuchida is never presented as being the least bit interested in Anzu in a romantic sense and that all he wants to do is keep her happy as her kindergarten teacher. He's constantly having to find that balance between humouring Anzu and her flights of fancy without giving anyone else any squicky ideas that he is the remote bit interested in a relationship with a kindergarten student. Anzu herself is very possessive of Tsuchida and if she was an older character, would probably perceived to be a disturbing yandere, however as a kindergarten aged child her crush retains a harmless innocence.

The other key relationship between Tsuchida and Yamamoto however is more frustrating. Yamamoto's denseness towards Tsuchida's feelings towards her was quite amusing at first, but by the end of the series just became irritating and it became hard to swallow that she couldn't see the wood for the trees. This sort of denseness worked with Tenma Tsukamoto in School Rumble, because she wasn't too bright in general, but with Yamamoto she is portrayed to be relatively intelligent (not anywhere near genius, but smart enough to have common sense),and perceptive (except for when it comes to matters of her own heart).

Looking at the overall picture, Hanamaru Kindergarten simply isn't screamingly hilarious enough to carry off the unrequited love angle all the way to the end without you become frustrated at the lack of a resolution. In his defence Tsuchida himself does at least become despondent about his lack of progress with Yamamoto, which leads to him questioning the career path he has taken as a kindergarten teacher. The only problem is that the show does lose at little bit of it's easy going charm when Tsuchida starts feeling sorry for himself.

As for the supporting characters most of them do not feel vital to the story but in saying that don't really take anything away from the show either, ranging from the fellow teachers (the one that makes the most impression is the sporty teacher Kusano) to the kindergarten students including third wheel of the main trio shy crybaby Koume.

The highly intelligent and slightly mysterious Hiiragi, is the shows most fun character and her various cosplays double up as Hanamaru Kindergartens most amusing and adorably cute moments. Whilst Hinagiku (the Yakuza boss daughter) who joins the show towards the end, was a character I would liked to see have seen more of, not so much as another 'love' rival for Anzu but for the fact that the situation with her father and his fellow hardened Yakuza's taking orders from this little four year old was admittedly quite amusing.

As for the Kindergarten setting it certainly looks to be a fun place for the kids to spend their day, with jungle gyms, it's own swimming pool and a slide that is incorporated into the fabric of the building that goes from the top to the ground floor. It's certainly a more idealistic view of a kindergarten, than a realistic one- something that suits the shows nostalgic mood towards a child's formative years.

Closing Verdict: At the end of the day Hanamaru Kindergarten is a cute and fun show but does not grow to be anything more than that, which is slightly disappointing coming from a notably inventive studio such as Gainax. Ideally it is the sort of show that finds itself placed as a relaxing care-free breather between watching more intense anime.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Thus far there has been no fulll English licence for Hanamaru Kindergarten, with it's only exposure to a western audience, being via Crunchyroll. It seems very unlikely that an English dub will ever emerge for this series.

Fukawa went to the ropes right away and Yoshida pulled Fukawa back to the center of the ring, told her to fight it and put her in the hold again.

Setting: Uchouten Kazoku is set in a fictional modern day Kyoto, where Yokai (Supernatural beings) have blended in amongst the humans, amongst these are Tankuki Racoon Dogs (who are able to blend in due to their shape shifting abilities and are able to take on human form) and the Tengu (flying demon gods, who also take human form but are recognisable by their exceptionally long noses).

Synopsis: Since their esteemed father was cooked in a hot-pot by humans, the Shimogamo have struggled to regain respect within Tanuki society and find themselves consistently harassed by the Ebisugawa's.

All care-free Yasaburo wants is to lead a fun and exciting life but can he achieve that whilst avoiding the same fate as his father and avoid bringing further embarrassment to his family.

Recommended Viewing Age: Approx 12 and up- Apart from a scene where Benten goes for a skinny dip, Uchoten-Kazoku is relatively free of fanservice. Even the nudity is shot in such a way, that it barely feels gratuitous. The Benten character is implied to be very beautiful and seductive (hence the fact that she has several men infatuated with her) but anything remotely 'sexy', is little more than suggestion (though the suggestion is strong enough, that the series may well be unsuitable for pre-teens).

Action Level: Fairly Low- Uchouten Kazoku is a series where supernatural occurences take place, but anyone expected any full on magic based confrontations will perhaps come away a little disappointed. There is some quirky and unique stuff here, examples of which include a flying house doing battle with a pirate ship in the sky, a folding fan that can summon stormy weather and one of the Tanuki turning themselves into a train, whizzing through Kyoto. Go into this expecting weird and crazy, rather more than intense when it comes to what could be considered action sequences for this series.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Medium- The Tanuki, are actually kind of cute in their actual animal form, mother Shimogamo due to her fear of Thunder, especially so.

Animation Quality/Art Style: With vibrant and colourful background art Uchouten Kazoku brings it's quirky story and Kyoto itself lovingly to life, whilst the character designs have a slender quality to them and no one looks as though the artists have decided to give them a generic half-baked character design.

There are admittedly more impressive series than this and occasionally the animation does lose a little consistency here and there, but overall Uchouten Kazoku is enough of a visual treat to be up to modern standards and certainly does not detract from enjoyment of the anime.

Music: Opening song Uchouten Jinsei by MilktubIt, is an energetic, kind of chaotically punky and in your face number that does a great job if capturing Uchouten Kazoku's quirky side, in contrast Que Sera Sera by Fhana is a mid-paced pop/rock ballad that attempts to capture the more whimsical side of the series- whilst it's not a bad song, it is fairly forgettable.

Plot and Characters: The Shimogamo family was once the most respected family in Tanuki society but that changed when their father (who at the time was the Nise-mon, the head of Tanuki society) ended up being cooked in a hot-pot. Since then the oldest son Yaichiro has been in competition to take his father place with his father's estranged brother Soun Ebisugawa, who along with his twins sons seems determined to undermime the Shimogamo's.

However it is not the try too hard Yaichiro, that is put forward as the main focus of the story, it is the care-free Yasaburo (perceived to be the most idiotic of the Shimogamo brood) that the story primarily focuses on and is much of what unfolds is seen through his viewpoint. Yasuburo was at one point arranged to be married to the Ebisugawa's daughter Kaisei, but the arrangement was called off by Soun. Despite continuing to have a more civil relationship with Kaisei than the rest of the Ebisugawa's, Yasuburo has never once seen the face of the girl he was set to be bethroted to.

Rounding out the Shimogamo's are second son Yajiro, who has transformed himself into a Frog for so long, he no longer knows how to turn back and now lives in a well, shy and timid youngest son Yashiro who constantly finds himself on the end of bullying from the Ebisugawa twins Ginkaku and Kinaku, and finally their mother who regularly transforms into a bifauxnen 'prince' when going outside but has a crippling fear of thunder, and is unable to transform into human form, thus leaving herself vulnerable to being caught by the humans.

The Shimogamo family have links to the grouchy Tengu Professor Akadama, who had a rather tsundere like relationship with them, particularly towards Yasaburo, who makes regular visits to the Professor. But it also happens that another former student, the mysterious Benten is a member of the Friday Fellows, a group of influential humans (business men/doctors etc) who regularly meet up for drinks and hold a year end bash that must include Tanuki hotpot. Despite being human Benten, has learned how to use Tengu magic and her former teacher Professor Akadama continues to be infatuated by her.

As the story progresses, we learn just how exactly the father Soichiro was captured (despite being the most powerful Tanuki) and who was behind it, the full extent to the bad blood between the Shimogamos and the Ebisugawas, the real reason why the second son Yajiro has permantly turned himself into a frog and that another member of the Friday Fellows (Professor Yodogawa) has links to the Shimogamo family (having met one of them in the past).

Analysis: Anime series based within Japanese folklore and spirits are nothing new or original and in recent years it's been something of a growing trend, they just look more groundbreaking when put up against the glut of shonen action, fanservice harem comedies and moe blob cute girls doing cute things shows. However with it's concept of a family of shape-shifting Tanuki living amongst us, Uchouten-Kazoku does at least feel as though it's trying to add a further quirk of originality.

With quirky comedy based around it's oddball characters and the Tanuki's shape-shifting abilities, Uchouten Kazoku has a relaxed feel and at times evokes the whimsical, magical mood of a Miyazaki directed Studio Ghibli film. There are several scenes throughout that turn what could have been a relatively mundane setting of modern day Kyoto into a charming fantasy land and continues a long tradition of anime shows that seamlessly blur the lines between fantasy and reality.

Though primarily light in mood, Uchouten-Kazoku does feature delicately handled and subtly delivered bouts of drama. The way the mystery of how the father figure met his demise and the various ways it effected not only his four sons but also the rest of Tanuki society, really gets you to care about the Shimogamo family and will have you willing them on to not only avoid ending up in a Tanuki hotpot themselves but reclaim their rightful spot as leading lights within the Tanuki community, and whilst the Friday Fellows aren't particularly portrayed as being evil and that the human's simply are at the top of the food chain, it does get you thinking about taking the life of another living being for the simple consumption of food, in a non preachy manner.

In contrast to being charmed by the Shimogamo family, I absolutely detested the rival Ebisugawa's, especially the annoying bully twins with haircuts as tragic as their ugly personalities. By the end of the series, I was begging for these jerks to meet a cruel and painful demise, that is just how annoying they are!

But that being said, we are supposed to dislike Ebisugawa's and in an series of only one cour length, it is probably best that the rival family are played up to be as unlikeable as possible and make the protagonist (Yasuburo) and the rest of the Shimogamo's that much more likeable in contrast. Not that the Shimogamo's really needed that highlighting, especially Yasuburo whose care-free but level headed attitude makes him one of the most likeable lead protagonists of any recent anime series.

At the very heart of Uchouten Kazoku is a story about a family, that is willing to support one another even through difficult times, and as the truth behind the causes of their father's capture and demise gradually unravels along with their enemies turning up the heat, their bond and resolve as a family does get tested and it truly is charming to see them work through the obstacles put in their way, bond further with each other and come to learn, understand and embrace not only the strengths but also the vulnerabilities within themselves.

Uchouten Kazoku is not without it's weaknesses however and these are enough to prevent it from blossoming into a truly great series, rather than merely being an enjoyably fun yet at times thought provoking slice of quirky originality. The enigmatic human female character Benten, to me came off as a vague, half-baked exercise in creating a stereotypically enigmatic character.

Presented as being somewhat 'affably evil', she's part of the drinking club that has a year end Tanuki hotpot, yet has close ties with the Shimogamo family, you never really know what her deal is beyond the fact that she is 'enigmatic and mysterious' and other than the fact she was a student of Professor Adakama we never really get any kind of explanation as to how she managed to acquire the powers of a tengu, despite being human. Thankfully the character development of the Shimogamo family themselves is much stronger but the fact is Benten has a fair amount of screen time.

It should also be noted that whilst Uchouten-Kazoku manages to genuinely charm by the end of it's 13 episode run, the series does start off a little bit meandering and slow and the leisurely pace could lose some viewers, who don't have the patience for something that does not immediately hit the ground running. That being said a leisurely paced comedy-drama based within Japanese folklore probably isn't going to appeal to fans of snappier, faster paced and more bombastic series regardless of the somewhat sleepy beginning.

Closing Verdict: Uchouten Kazoku probably needed to go another 12 or so episodes to blossom into something truly great but as it is, it does manage to be a quirky and charming series, that does manage to bring along it's own unique twist on the increasingly well trodden path of Japanese folklore based story telling and manages to successfully blend eye popping fantasy, amusing comedy and heart warming whimsy.

Is the Dub Any Good?: The U.S license for this series has been picked up by N.I.S (Nippon Ichi Software) America. The company does not have a track record of releasing dubbed anime, so it seems unlikely, that we will see a dub for Uchouten Kazoku/The Eccentric Family.

Synopsis: Shinobu Omiya receives a letter from Alice Cartalet, a girl she made friends in with England, during a home-stay visit five years earlier, saying that she is coming to Japan. Despite neither being able to speak one another's language, they became good friends, inspiring Alice to meet Shinobu again one day.

Alice was so inspired to be with Shinobu, that she learnt Japanese and flew out to Japan to be at the same school with Shinobu. Surprised to see her friend from England, who is now semi-fluent in Japanese, Shinobu introduces Alice to her close friends Aya and Yoko. A further addition to the group of friends then arrives in the form of Shinobu's half Japanese friend from England Karen.

Recommended Viewing Age: Approx 7 and up- There's no real obvious fanservice here or content of an adult nature. More mature audiences will pick up on the slight hints of Yuri regarding Shinobu x Alice and Aya x Yoko, but younger viewers will just see it as a pair of close friendships.

Action Level: Non Existent- Moving On......

Moe/Kawaii Level: Extremely Moe- This series may as well be called 'Moe International Exchange Programme'.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The character designs are generic moe-blob's...pleasant enough to look at but nothing original, whilst the background art can be best described as functional.

There are some obvious budget restraints showing with the animation quality, with the penultimate episode bombarded with eye-catch cards. In fact the format of the show can be a little off-kilter sometimes with a format of main plot, eye-catch, gag, eye-catch, gag, eye-catch, main plot appearing in several episodes.

Music: Both the opening Jumping! and closer 'Your Voice' are sung by the five main seiyuu in the show. Jumping! is a typically energetic, lightly rocking slice of J-Pop , whilst closing song 'Your Voice' has a quirky big band feel. Both songs suit the mood of the show and are admittedly quite catchy.

Plot and Characters: Much of Kinmoza's wafer thin plot, was already detailed in the plot summary, there really is not much else to the show other than Japanese girl goes to England makes a friend, the English friend comes to Japan five years later and they pick up their friendship.

In fairness, there are one or two other elements to pick up on with the interactions of the characters, notably an episode where Alice gets jealous when her friend from England Karen comes over and receives attention from Shinobu and there's the equally close secondary relationship between Aya and Yoko. Plus there is a thinly veiled message of no matter where you come from, we can all be friends! But we're still hardly talking deep and complex stuff here.

As for the characters Alice is the short and cute English girl, who has a bit of a clingy/jealous streak when it comes to Shinobu, Shinobu herself is a book dumb ditz, who loves western culture. Aya is the twin-girls smart girl who has something of a tsundere like relationship with her best friend Yoko, whilst Yoko is a laid back and cheerful tomboy.

Rounding out the five (and it always is five isn't it?) is rich genki girl Karen- who was Alice's friend in England but is conveniently half Japanese and has taken the decision to move with her family to Japan and follow her friend to Japan. Despite being half Japanese, Karen speaks a more broken Japanese compared to Alice. Supporting the main five are Shinobu's fashion model sister Isami and their absent minded tracksuit wearing English/Home-room teacher Sakura.

The comedy here is typical for a slice of life, cute girls doing cute things show, with much of the comedy coming from the quirks of the characters, such as Shinobu's obsession over western culture (especially blond hair) and strange fashion sense. Keen viewers of anime, especially fans of shows with a moe slant, should be able to pick up on a few comedic shout-out's to some other shows such as <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...1&postcount=23" rel="external nofollow">K-On!</a> and <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=256" rel="external nofollow">Chuunibyou.</a>

There is also some presumably unintentional comedy, but I'll save that for the Analysis section, because it plays a big part in the success or failure of the show.

Analysis: Regular readers of my reviews, will know that I'm not one of these elitist who turns their noses up at the kind of slice of life shows, that usually feature cute girls doing cute things. Whilst I probably would rarely put these shows on the same pedestal as well crafted series that do end up providing the viewer with a more 'intense' experience, they can often be welcomed to provide an easy going change of pace from the more intense, complex or serious shows.

Unfortunately, I can't really hold Kinmoza! in particularly high regard, as the show is as derivative as they come when it comes to shows of this ilk and highlights the fact that even the likes of myself (who embraces, rather than dismisses 'moe' ), think that the anime market has in all honesty become over-saturated with these kind of shows.

The better shows of this genre, have a goal for these characters to reach together, and Kinmoza! initially has that with the fact that their two main characters Shinobu and Alice, struggle to understand one another's languages, but that concept is thrown out of the window by episode 2, because the now high school aged Alice can now communicate in Japanese without any problems and all you are left with is.... 'Hey look Shinobu's wearing another wacky outfit' or 'Isn't tiny little Alice, so cute!'

Then again that might be a good thing because the 'English' spoken by the English characters in terribly stilted and (I would presume this) unintentionally hilarious. Add to the fact that the English characters all talk with a Japanese accent and the depiction of the England that Alice and Karen come from appears to be stuck in a 1950's time warp and you can hardly call the execution of this element of the show a success, even if it does provide bigger laughs than much of the shows intended comedy.

Funniest line of the whole show (and I'm not even sure if it was meant to be funny or not) is when Alice tells her English teacher Sakura, that her English sounds a little awkward- given that her own English is stilted whenever she speaks what is apparently her native tongue, I couldn't help but laugh at that line!

In defence of Kinmoza! those who are fans of this type of show, will still be charmed by the cute/nice characters and there are admittedly some relatively funny/amusing moments (other than the terrible Engrish), especially some cute shout-outs to other shows. They might as well give a nod to K-On! because the Aya x Yoko relationship, is suspiciously similar to Mio x Riku (though in terms of looks Aya is a carbon coby of Azusa).

Closing Verdict: Kinmoza! had a potentially interesting concept with the cultural exchange thing between Japan and England but it executes it badly and goes nowhere with it. What you are left with is a paint by numbers 'moe-blob' slice of life show, that I could only really recommend to rabid fans of the genre, who can't get enough of cute girls doing cute things.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Sentai filmworks has picked up the license for this show, but no English dub has been announced yet. Given the fact that part of the quirks of the show is some of the characters speaking English, this may be one of those shows that Sentai decide not to dub and release as sub only.

Synopsis: Reclusive otaku Takumi Nishijo lives in a shipping container converted into an apartment on the roof of a building in Shibuya, Tokyo and has virtually no interest in the real world, spending most days playing RPG's on his computer and conversing with his imaginary anime heroine girlfriend Seira.

However during an online chat, a mysterious poster known as Shogun (The General in the English dub) sends Takumi a series of gruesome images relating to events collectively known as the New Gen Crimes. One of the images depicts a man nailed to a wall with stakes, and the next day Takumi witnesses the exact scene in person, except this time a blood soaked rose haired girl is standing in front of the corpse.

Takumi runs from the scene, but the next day the same pink haired girl he saw at the scene suddenly appears as class-mate at the highschool he irregularly attends and claims to have been his friend for years and as Takumi begins to sink deeper into a web of conspiracies and delusions he starts to see girls carrying giant swords and finds himself a suspect in carrying out the so called New Gen crimes.

Just what is behind Chaos engulfing Shibuya and is any of it actually real?

Recommended Viewing Age: Teens (Approx 13+) and up- There's actually not as much fanservice as one might expect from this series, given the harem of girls that gradually develops around Takumi, however the sometimes bloody violence and generally creepy atmosphere that permeates throughout should keep this out of reach from younger viewers.

Action Level: Medium- Chaos;Head features girls wielding giant final fantasy style swords and without giving too much away, these provide much of the series more high octane action moments later on in the series.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Fairly High- As expected some of the girls fit the cute/moe stereotype, the bright and cheerful Rimi, the shy Kozue, tsundere Sena, enigmatic 'Rei Ayanami expy' Ayase.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The generically 'Bishojo' character designs look typically mid 2000's and in all honesty look as though they would have been lifted from something like a visual novel, which is exactly what they are. The background art is bright and colourful enough but a little flat, whilst the animation itself is a bit glitchy at times.

Chaos;Head is not a terribly animated nor particularly bad looking series, it's just mediocre and coming from a top quality studio with a strong reputation such as Madhouse, that has to be seen as disappointing.

Music: Opener F.D.D sung by Kanako Ito, is a lightly rocking J-Pop tune that is fairly catchy, whilst closer 'Super Special' by Seira Kagami is a catchy but somewhat cheesy J-Pop number sung mostly in English. The BGM soundtrack is pretty solid, and there are several dissonant tracks that tap into the general paranoia that permeates throughout the series.

Plot and Characters: Throughout Chaos;Head we are unsure who and exactly what are behind the atrocities taking place in Shibuya. Takumi is presented as someone who is very anti-social and doesn't have a strong grip on reality.

A big corporation is introduced as a possible cause behind the chaos and Takumi is visited by a rapidly aged man in a wheelchair who appears to be this 'Shogun' character Takumi has been talking to on the internet chat-room, but we are never quite sure if they are the cause behind the chaos or just some figment of what could be an over active imagination.

As well as his confirmed to be imaginary girl friend Seira, Takumi gets involved with a series of girls who become intertwined with the events that take place, these range from Takumi's irritating (to him) little sister Nanami, Rimi the pink haired girl, whose enthusiastic and cheery personality clashes with the initial blood-soaked encounter Takumi had with her, the eccentric Ayase who moonlights as a singer in rock band under the name of FES and whose lyrics predict the events of the New Gen murders (thus making a suspect), Yua who appears to be stalking Takumi and is investigating the New Gen events, the moody Sena and the first girl Takumi sees wielding a giant sword and finally Kozue a mute transfer student who ends up communicating with Takumi telepathically. Throughout Takumi is on edge about whether any of these girls can be fully trusted, as he continues to lose grip on who and what is real.

Adding further fuel to the fire is Takumi's online friend Grim, whose use of the phrase 'Those Eyes, whose are they?' puts Takumi further on edge, whilst there is a team of cops investigating the 'New Gen' incidents, who gradually appear to be more clued in that something not quite normal is happening in Shibuya.

Analysis: Chaos; Head is an appropriate name for this anime as it ends up being one giant unfocused mess, unsure of exactly what it wants to be or what it wants to say. Blending the self deprecating commentary on modern Japanese society of a Welcome To The NHK, the collective social paranoia of a Paranoia Agent and the cyber crime element of a Ghost In The Shell, Chaos;Head throws it all at a wall and hope that it sticks, unfortunately what happens is that all those elements congeal into one mess and the whole thing ends up being unfocused.

It starts promisingly enough and the twitchy, anti-social and apparently delusional Takumi makes for an interesting and somewhat refreshingly flawed protagonist. However as a cliched harem builds up around him and an element of a corrupt corporation comes into play, the twists and turns in Chaos;Head become more and more preposterous. What starts out as intriguing just ends up being messy, frustrating and feels as though the show is trying too hard to have the audience constantly on edge, over what is about to happen next.

The Visual Novel the anime adaptation is based upon, is a loosely connected prequel to the excellent Steins;Gate. Without having played the game, I cannot 100% say if the problems here are with the source material or the adaptation of the source material, but the unfocused and messy nature of the anime, points to the usual problems of trying to convert a game with several story routes into a cohesive story over 12 episodes.

Coming from a studio of Madhouse stature this is particularly disappointing, and the already mentioned mediocre art an animation throughout the series, unfortunately (or perhaps appropriately) matches the unfortunate mess that this series ended up sinking into.

Takumi remains an interesting and curiously watchable protagonist throughout and the elements were certainly in place for Chaos;Head to be an interesting and engaging series, but unfortunately the execution in bringing those elements together ended up being far from successful.

Closing Verdict: Chaos;Head is a series that could have been, no actually should have been so much better than what it ended up being. It's a series that tries to juggle too much at once and ends up falling under the weight of it's ambitions.

The first series to come out from a series of shows loosely related to one another (and all with a semi-colon in the title), Chaos;Head unfortunately finds itself as the ugly step child of the series in comparison to the extraordinary Steins;Gate and the flawed but still highly enjoyable Robotics;Notes.

Mediocre

Is the Dub Any Good?: Funimation did the dub for Chaos;Head and whilst I wouldn't call it their most outstanding dub (then again the show wasn't exactly outstanding to begin with), it is up to their usually solid standards. Nerdy voiced Todd Haberkorn is a predictable choice for Takumi, but he does do a decent job with the lead role.

I agree what you about Chaos Head. It started out weird but interesting then slid down the slope and crashed. It was different enough for me to watch but at the end, felt like i wasted my time.
