ECW 1994,The Year The Extreme Revolution Was Born

Recommended Posts

1994 was a very interesting year for wrestling. The WWF was trying to dig itself out of the hole it created by having allegations of steroid abuse and sexual harrasment charges filed against them.Vince McMahon was eventualy exonerated, but the damage had been done.WWF's public relations was a nightmare and the WWF just spent millions in court costs. The WWF was down ,but not out,so they started promoting the WWF under the NEW GENERATION BANNER.Which was supposably pushing the younger talent such as Shawn Micheals,Kevin "Deisel"Nash,Scott"Razor Ramon"Hall, and Bret Hart. Meanwhile down south. WCW was just getting hot,(If you wanna call the second coming of Hulkamania hot)plus they were signing some of WWF's older guys, WCW was not using its younger talent as they should have. Then you had the birth of EXTREME,the new Revolution.

PROLOGUE

you see in mid 1993 Paul Heyman who had departed WCW was contacted by Jim Crockett (who's no compete clause was up) and was asked to help run Crockett's new version of the NWA. Crockett wanted to build a traditional wrestling brand while Heyman declared traditional wrestling was antiquated and a new take on the genre was needed. With that being said Heyman's partnership with Crockett ended about as quick as it started

NEW BEGINNINGS

From the fall of 1993 to about the spring of 1994 Paul Heyman kind of fell off the face of the earth until an old friend by the name of Eddie Gilbert asked Paul to join him in Eastern Championship Wrestling, which was one of the only promotions running under the NWA banner that had not folded yet. Gilbert along with a wrestling promoter named Todd Gordon were running and promoting wrestling shows throughout the Tri State area of Pennsylvania,Delaware, and New Jersey, also extending down to some of the Mid Atlantic states.

TWO'S COMPANY BUT THREES A CROWD

Into the fall of 1994 Todd Gordon felt there was to many cooks in the kitchen. Gordon who was feeling like he had no say so in the company and really didn't want the headaches anymore, decided to sale his half of the company to Heyman. The NWA President Dennis Coralluzzo who had replaced Jim Crockett asked Heyman and Gilbert to hold a tournament to crown a new NWA champion. Heyman knew that That Coralluzzo may be the new NWA President, but Coralluzzo still had the same vision that Crockett had and Heyman who had said that it was time for a change, new that Coralluzzo's version of the NWA was the same old s**t just a different day and time. Heyman disscussed his plans with Gilbert, who for some reason felt loyal to the NWA,disagreed with Heymans plans and was now deciding if he made the right decision bringing in Heyman.

THE NIGHT THE REAL ATTITUDE ERA AND LOOSE CANNON BEGAN

As planned a tournament was held to crown a new NWA worlds champion. Shane Douglas defeated 2 Cold Scorpio, to become the NWA worlds champion, but if the wrestling world only knew what was about to happened next. After winning the worlds title Douglas started thanking the fans and gave thanks to his late father, but then all hell broke loose. Some call it the Night that crossed the line, some call it the shock heard across the wrestling world, but the night when Shane Douglas threw down the NWA worlds title and stated that he didn't want to be champion of a dead company that died 7 years earlier and then raised the Eastern championship title declaring it the only real worlds heavyweight title. That night Douglas started the attitude era or got the ball rolling way before the WWF started their so called attitude era,and Douglas was speaking his mind and saying whatever he wanted way before Brian Pillman started being called the loose cannon. After this historical night Eddie Gilbert decided it was best not to burn his bridges with the NWA and sold his half of Eastern Championship Wrestling to Heyman, making Heyman the sole owner of Eastern Championship Wrestling and as they say the rest is History.
