In December of 2000 the wrestling world was evolving, the WWF were back to the number one company and were more popular than ever as they took over the wrestling world with the ‘attitude era’, they have a solid roster with many huge stars like The Rock, Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Triple H and The Undertaker. They are currently building towards Wrestlemania 17 and with the wrestlers they have at the moment it’s sure to be an amazing event. As well as a great current roster they have just opened Ohio Valley Wrestling, a development territory for young talent, it holds the stars of tomorrow and currently it trains hot prospects like Brock Lesnar, Dave Batista, Randy Orton & John Cena.

Meanwhile WCW is falling faster than a rock to the bottom of the sea, in the last year and a half the company has fell from the number one promotion in the world turning over millions of dollars into widely mocked promotion because of the poor shows they have been producing. They have recently went into debt due to the huge salaries they pay the wrestlers and it looks like if they don’t turn it around soon they will be filing for bankruptcy.

<O:p</O:p

The third most recognisable promotion in America, ECW is going through a rough patch itself, they started a new craze in wrestling with their hardcore matches and cutting edge storylines which rose them to dizzying heights and they were seen as a large cult promotion. However this made the WWF up their game and they announced the ‘attitude era’ which was mostly the same stuff as ECW but just with bigger stars and on a bigger stage, this took away a lot of ECW’s fan base and they are currently back to a small regional promotion and have lost their national network (TNN) to the WWF.

<O:p</O:p

Nearing the end of December things started looking worse for ECW, they couldn’t get another national network on board so their TV show is only being shown in four regions across America and financial issues came about with it being revealed the company owed many wrestlers up to a hundred thousand dollars, during this time Paul Heyman, the owner of ECW considered calling it quits on the promotion many times. Luckily he received a break through, a court case that had been on-going for many weeks was settled and it was announce TNN would have to pay ECW an undisclosed fee (reports say near the 3 million dollar mark) for abruptly cancelling ECW in favour of the WWF, it was also recognised that TNN were in fact going out of their way to not advertise ECW as they wanted Heyman to drop the show from their network, because of this discovery they fee owed increased slightly.<O:p</O:p

Paul Heyman was delighted with the outcome, although he had burned bridges with the WWF, Vince McMahon and TNN he now had some money to pay off the debt, and pay back the money owed to many wrestlers. After doing this Heyman had a small sum of money left and decided he would use it to rebuild ECW, they still are only shown in four regions but they do have a ppv provider that covers most of America and Canada. Heyman realised that he couldn’t make the same mistake twice and ECW could no longer be as risqué and hardcore as in the past as no networks would then show ECW, he decided to cut a lot of that out but still have odd bits of hardcore but he was leaning towards a new style of wrestling and he wanted to build a new generation of wrestlers to fit the mould.<O:p</O:p
