Up next is in-state rival Illinois.

After Davenport's performance against West Virginia, I decide we might as well throw Lewis in there at QB. Davenport will stay play some, but Lewis will be the starter.

- Injuries - Healy (Dislocated wrist) - out, Cleveland (Sprained ACL) - questionable.

- Losing Healy hurts, literally and figuratively.

- Illinois lost in Week 1 to Missouri, 43-21.

It's amazing this one was not much worse, as we turn the ball over 8, yes, you heard me right, 8 times. Our QBs throw 5 interceptions, including 3 by Duane Lewis, the true freshman who got the start this week. True freshman back Stone had 2 fumbles as well, but did rush for 80 yards on 25 carries. WR Kenneth Miller had 6 catches for 87 yards.

Defensively Paul Anderson and linebacker Melvin Suarez led the way with 10 tackles each.

The offense played well in this one, with both passing and running working pretty well. Duane Lewis was 13-22 for 122 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 INT. Robert Stone rushed for 89 yards on 21 carries, and John Johnson picked up another 56 yards on 14 carries.

On defense, OLB Bennie Jones had 11 tackles, along with 2 sacks, to help lead the group to a performance where they limited Idaho to 64 total yards rushing.

We are off in Week 4, so we will use this week to get some guys healed, and practice hard and try to cut down on some of the mistakes we're making.

Elsewhere in the FBS, the top game this week is #5 Texas at #2 Oklahoma. Texas won this one, defeating the Sooners 25-10.

We made a frantic 4th quarter comeback in this one, but came up a little short as our final touchdown came on the last play of the game.

QB Duane Lewis showed part of the risk of playing a freshman in this one, as he struggled, going 8 of 20 for 162 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Freshman RB Robert Stone, however, had the best game of his young career thus far, rushing for 118 yards on 23 carries. He did fumble twice though, but we recovered both of them. John Johnson also had 50 yards on just 5 carries, though 42 of that came on one carry.

Kenneth Miller had 4 catches for 148 yards, including his 76 yard touchdown catch from Lewis. He also had touchdown catches of 26 yards and 45 cards.

Defensively, Paul Anderson led the way again with 10 tackles and 2 pass deflections.

The first 4Q comeback of freshman QB Duane Lewis's career, as he leads a last minute drive, hitting WR John Rivera on a 42 yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining.

Lewis played well in this one, hitting 13 of 23 passes for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns. Perhaps best of all, no interceptions. Senior Jeff Davenport also played, but showed why he is not starting, as he goes 1 for 6 with 1 interception.

The rushing game was shut down by the Broncos defense, with Stone gaining just 54 yards on 25 carries.

WR Kenneth Miller had 3 catches for 124 yards, including the 68 yard touchdown catch.

On defense, safety Jack Hancock led the way with 11 tackles. He also forced two fumbles and had 1 pass deflection. DT Benjamin Perez sacked WMU QBs twice also.

Injuries - QB Davenport (broken thumb) - probable, FB Lucero (Torn tendon - forearm) - doubtful, OG Butler (torn ligament - foot) - out, OG Healy (out), OG Harris (torn tendon - finger) - probable, OG Edwards (fractured clavicle) - doubtful, C Fowler (ankle) - questionable, DE Cleveland (torn tendon-foot) - doubtful, OLB Jones (cracked ribs) - probable, FS Robertson (torn ligament - foot) - questionable

Our OL has been decimated by injury, and it will be a patchwork unit for the game against CMU. Some guys who should be rested will have to play as we simply can't field other options. Should be interesting . . . . .

This one wasn't pretty. I'd like to say it was a defensive battle, but a battle of ineptitude is more like it. We had 205 total yards of offense, while CMU racked up just 257. Each team punted 10 times. CMU turned the ball over 5 times, while we turned it over twice, both on interceptions.

Lewis went 9-24 for 159 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Accuracy was once again the problem for our QBs, though 4 of the total incompletions were due to drops by our receivers. Stone rushed for 66 yards on 24 carries.

Jack Hancock had his second straight good game, with 7 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. Melvin Suarez had 9 tackles and a forced fumble.

The offense, and particularly freshmen QB Duane Lewis and RB Robert Stone, really came to play in this battle against the weak Owls team. Lewis was 15-21 passing, with 244 yards and 2 touchdowns. Importantly he had no interceptions either. Jeff Davenport actually played well in limited time, completing 4 of 6 passes for 95 yards.

On the receiving end, John Rivera had 6 catches for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns, while John Diaz had 4 catches for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Stone completed his best game thus far, rushing for 140 yards on 30 carries.

The offense compiled 515 total yards of offense, rushing for 180 and passing for 335 more. The final score could have been much worse, as 5 drives stalled near or within the red zone, leading to 5 Francisco Parker field goals, with a long of 42 yards.

Defensively this was truly a team effort. CB Jacob Dickson led the team with 6 tackles on the day, also intercepting a pass. DTs Newman and John Owens had a sack each as well.

Can't keep the 3 game winning streak going as the team comes out flat on the road in Ypsilanti.

Next week we have Buffalo coming into Dekalb. Sitting at 4-4, we have hopes of becoming Bowl eligible. Two of the final three games are at home as well, with Buffalo and Bowling Green coming into our house, and a game on the road at Toledo.

Unfortunately we pull off a dud at home, losing here to Buffalo. We now need to win the last two games to become eligible for a bowl.

We have a bye week this week, so we'll look to get some guys healthy for our game against Toledo the following week.

We get the job done here, winning the battles on both sides of the ball. Still having issues scoring touchdowns when we get into scoring position, but at least putting points on the board.

Now need a win in our final game, a home match-up with Bowling Green, to be bowl-eligible.

Final game of the regular season. Stone has been upgraded to "Probable", though that could really be "Definite". We simply need him.

We can't reach 6 wins on the year as we fall to Bowling Green. We did win 1 more game than 2012, but not the improvement I was hoping for. Played a lot of true freshmen though, so at least they gained some valuable experience.

Final 2013 NIU Stats

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/2013_niu_final_passing.jpeg

True freshman Duane Lewis had a pretty good first season. He will go into spring ball as the starter, though redshirt Mark Lopez will be pushing him for the role. Jeff Davenport returns for his Senior year as well.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/2013_niu_final_rushing.jpeg

True freshman Robert Stone also had a pretty good season, though the yards per carry was disappointing. That probably has more to do with injuries and poor play by the offensive line though. Redshirt Rubin O'Neill should be the clear #2 back going into spring ball.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/2013_niu_final_receiving.jpeg

Top two receivers Rivera and Miller are both seniors, so we'll be looking to replace both of them for next season. Mayo and freshman John Diaz appear to have the inside track.

At tight end, we lose Brandon Flores, but he had a disappointing senior season. We were looking for more than just 11 catches from him.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/2013_niu_final_defense.jpeg

Paul Anderson once again led us in tackles, and the senior will be sorely missed next year. The next two leading tacklers, linebackers Melvin Suarez and Bennie Jones, are both seniors as well, so we will need to replace our top 3 tacklers.

Freshman Tristan Newman tied senior Benjamin Perez for the team lead in sacks with 5, and became one of the leaders of our DL line, which features 3 true freshmen starting.
