People seem to think, when I opened APW 7 years ago, that I was just a guy with a little money and an idea to make more. They thought that I believed doing this was easy. And maybe those people would be right. But what those people don’t see is that I also did it because it was a dream. For a couple short years I was on top of the world. I ran the top wrestling company in Australia. But what I also did, was I put wrestling on people’s radar. </p><p> </p><p>

I put it on the radar on TV executives everywhere. And if I had as much money as people thought I did at the time, I probably would have been able to take advantage of that. But one man had the bright idea. Some would say he had the same idea I did. Some might even say it was a better idea. He was able to convince the TV station to open its own wrestling promotion. They wouldn’t have to pay costs to a promoter, and they wouldn’t have to worry about the promoter moving to another network. And what they have proceeded to do is disgrace wrestling. Tristram Day can go to hell for writing the worst action movie ever with no fight scenes, then trying to pass it as a wrestling show. The guys to our south at least have the decency to give a damn about what they are doing. It might be worse than even the stuff Aussie Rules did in their day, but they have a soul. A slightly twisted soul, but it’s there. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>If it’s the last thing I do… RAW will perish…</strong></p><p>

What are the language/content limits on the forums? I'm starting a 1998 ECW game soon, and wanted to know to cover my ideas. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Nice opening to 1998 in ECW

That's severely limiting to a 1998 ECW, if it's true.

Don't take it as an OK from on high, because I don't have any sort of power around here, but generally I'd say that language within a dynasty context would be ok, as long as you don't try to circumvent the board's filters. As you say, an ECW 1998 dynasty would suffer quite a bit if you were unable to swear for fear of being banned/having posts deleted.

The board has filters that filter out words, and personally I think that as long as you abide by those and don't try to get around them, you should be fine in a dynasty. After all, nobody goes into an ECW dynasty and gets offended by bad language (and if they do... kinda their fault, no?).

The language filters are mostly in place to avoid causing offence in other less appropriate places (such as... well, everywhere outside of a dynasty).

I think we're mostly all old enough and ugly enough to know the difference between 'appropriate' use of 'bad language' (Sandman promos in a dynasty) and offensive, inappropriate use directed at board members/people in general.

If Sandman calls Raven a ****** in your dynasty, that's not a problem (as long as you don't try to circumvent the censor). If you call BHK a ****** - even inside your dynasty - that's a problem. But that's just my two cents.

So, if (for instance) one wrestler started a derogatory chant at another wrestler that included a profanity that rhymes with witch, what would be a good and appropriate way to get this across? "Punk-ass *****" ? Or is that clear enough? I just wanna be sure that people know what the word being said is.

I don't see why 'b****' wouldn't be acceptable, under the circumstances.

QUESTION: Do you, as a reader (follower), find interest in created companies in the cornellverse?

I know that companies like SWF, TCW, and USPW have built-in interest due to familiarity (and the ability to be played by everyone). That's why, I believe, my SWF project was more followed than projects like DOA/WAR (I still had great followings, just not to the same widespread level).

That said, would you still read a project centered around a company that is not in your default game?

My time is super limited but I believe I could write for a company if... 1) They were small enough to have less frequent shows, 2) A smaller roster, and 3) wouldn't need updating every (or even every other) week. It'd be in more of a recap scenario (promos are not written out); so, not to my typical depth.

It'd be a regional company that's focused around elevating the best of the Indy world; creating the Faith's, Strong's, Keith's, etc. of tomorrow. So, essentially giving depth to people like Remmy Skye, The Cali Dragons, Mainstream Hernandez, etc.

While there would be a few people who've been seen on TV in one of the big 3, the majority of the roster would be 'new' to the mainstream wrestling fan (making them "home grown").

So, it's more of a "concept project" versus just booking a known company/wrestlers.

Would this be of interest (even with the more recap results) to you?

In some ways created companies can be more fun to read as it's a very definite "vision" from the writer, rather than a take on an existing company and its storylines. You also avoid the pitfalls of diaries taking a couple of months to work through the same storylines as everyone else.

So in answer to your basic question, yes, created companies can be very interesting from a reader's point of view.

However...

Personally, I'd like to see someone tackle an indy company that didn't go for the obvious choices. I can understand why Skye, the Cali Dragons and Hernandez are desirable hires, but they are used so often that they have, in some ways, more depth than some of the televised characters (and regularly end up as signings in national-sized promotion diaries). Certainly they have probably more diary appearances between them than most! :D

Yup. As jhd said it's interesting to see someone create an entire atmosphere for a new company.

Yea, that's what I was thinking as well. It really lends itself to the writer's creation versus "fitting in a box".

I totally see what you're saying. These guys are typically picked up by most anyone writing a dynasty. I guess it's for a reason though; being the most talented guys on the indy scene. The hard part I'm looking at is, to create a scenario where a company is centered around promoting "home grown" talent that are the future stars of our industry, you kind of need these guys to develop around. Sure, there would be guys who aren't at that level on the roster but, banking on 'the future', you want the guys who will provide the best return.

That's what I wanted a project like this to feel like... "We are a new company, bringing a new feel, and bringing you the BEST up-and-coming talent in the industry that you haven't seen before" (While they show up in dynasties, they aren't 'known' to the average cornellverse viewer due to never working in the big three).

To me, E-V, this is kind of like saying "I'm going to start a company that will promote home grown US talent of the sort WWE and TNA will want to hire. My first home-grown picks will be Kevin Steen, Green Ant, and the Young Bucks."

I'm with jhd. The concept's nice, but the characters you gave as examples are overused. They're very talented, sure, but getting good scores is not the same as putting together an interesting diary. There a PLENTY of 'future stars' in the C-Verse who haven't been used in diaries quite so much. Maybe they have some weaknesses, but isn't that more interesting? If you want 'homegrown' talent, don't you want to be growing them yourself, instead of plucking fully formed stars from other promotions?

You do seem to have passion for the idea, however, so whatever you do, that'll probably shine through. Rock on.

This is definitely true, and one of the things I keep saying about diary advice in general.

But I'm also with Self in terms of... Hell, even if your projects were other strong names like Austin Smooth, I'd be more excited to read about them. Cali Dragons are prime-time ready instantly. Mainstream Hernandez has had 4-5 different takes on them in big-name diaries. Austin needs work to get him there. So do various others.

Maybe sim a couple years forward into the database to unlock some more less-often-seens?

I'm on my phone; so, my response will be brief. You all bring up good points. There is a tiresome feel to running with names like this. I thought these names would give the company more of a "I need to see this" feel; however, can totally understand the "already done that" feel. I'll have to think about it further.

After so many dynasties, you start to run out of ideas. Haha

So at the moment I'm running an MAW game where I'm taking the 'make new stars' bit seriously. But what I've done is develop a split-tier show format, where the second hour has the big name contests that bring in the audience and sell the DVDs, while the first half is the MAW HomeGrownRookie Hour, with a great many 'showcase' bouts.

Every so often someone emerges from the first half into the second. I expct the next will be Cheyne Martel, a Canadian rookie super-heavyweight with great Performance skills and rapidly improving Brawling and Aerial/.

It's not that I mind seeing the "regulars" (Kieth/Gauge/Hernandez/James/Perez/Parker etc...) in diaries. What I'm weary of is seeing the whole damn list of them get hired in the third post of every diary. What's worse is when half of them get lost in the mix.

For the record, I love diaries with user-created feds. However, "I'm building the stars of the future" sounds a lot like MAW's function in the universe. That doesn't mean you can't do your own take on it, but it does mean that I'd want to see some kind of unique personal twist on the concept.

No matter what promotion or workers you use, the best* diaries are the ones that have some kind of storyline running through them. Something to hold my interest beyond "Here's a show, then I hired some guys, now here's another show, etc...".

* By "best", I of course mean "What I like" ;)
