UWF 1987: Changing History

UWF 1987: Changing History

After leaving his job as booker for the Oklahoma-based company headed by NWA member promoter Leroy McGuirk in 1979, Cowboy Bill Watts formed his own office, Mid-South Sports, Inc. Watts took over former McGuirk cities in Louisiana and Mississippi with much success. In March 1986, trying to succeed were others have failed, MSW went national as the Universal Wrestling Federation. The name change was to prevent the company from being stigmatized as a southern group. UWF was a huge success upon launch, however, by March of 1987 it was quite apparent that UWF would not last the remainder of the year unless something drastic was done. Just as Bill Watts went over the projections for the next show a young kid walked into his office...

Bill Watts

Who the hell let you in? I aint got time to be talking to no punk kids...

JT Sweet

I guess saving your company isn't on the agenda for today. I'll just leave and take my proposal to someone who wants to be in the wrestling business next year.

Bill Watts

Hold up son, what do you mean save my company?

JT Sweet

The name is Sweet, JT Sweet not son. Secondly, you can't sit there and tell me you don't see McMahon gobbling up companies like Pac-Man munching on pellets.

Bill Watts

Tell me something I don't know.

JT Sweet

Oil is drying up all over the south.

Bill Watts

Ha, ha, ha! That is a good one boy. Oil drying up, don't you know we got plenty of the stuff for years to come.

JT Sweet

I give it 5 months tops. Look, I know I'm just some punk kid, but my father is a geologist. According to his research the area is going to dry up pretty soon and when it does your business with go down the drain. You will become a footnote in wrestling history and no one will even care that the UWF existed!

Bill Watts

How dare you...

JT Sweet

No! How dare you! I come in here trying to help you out and you dismiss me just because I'm a bit young.

Bill Watts

Calm down. Look, if you think you can save my business then lets hear your idea.

JT Sweet

First off, you need to dump all of your dead weight. Then, you need to appeal to a wider audience. Next, you need to hire me as your new head booker.

Bill Watts

You know, you may be crazy and I might be as well, but what the hell! You're hired...now get to work!

I saw this earlier and I want to see how you do always liked the UWF. Very interesting tournament it looks like. I think Lawler had feuded in real life with every man you have in the tournament minus Chavo and DiBiase. I can't wait see how this turns out.

Jim Ross

Hello everybody! I'm Jim Ross and joining me as always is none other than the legendary, Boyd Pierce! Also along for the ride is newcomer to the announce table, JT Sweet. Normally we would start off by telling you all the great action you missed last week, but today we have a special edition of Power Pro Wrestling. The UWF championship committee has retired both the Tag Team and TV championships. On top of that they have vacated the Universal Championship and are ordering a tournament to crown a new champion to be held tonight. If that wasn't enough, we have 4 great competitors flown in just for this tournament. Jim Crocket's own Arn Anderson, All Japan's Dory Funk Jr., the American Wrestling Association's Curt Henning and the king of Memphis wrestling Jerry Lawler!

Boyd Pierce

Don't forget we have 4 great competitors of our own Jim. We have Chavo Guerrero who has dominated the California wrestling scene. Then there is Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert who never goes anywhere without the lovely Missy Hyatt. In addition to that we have Michael "Pretty Sexy" Hayes, one of the world famous Fabulous Freebirds. And last but certainly not least is the second generation star Ted DiBiase. son of the infamous "Iron" Mike DiBiase and a fantastic wrestler in his own right.

JT Sweet

These are certainly some of the 8 best wrestlers in the world right now, but one has to wonder why former Universal Champion One Man Gang George Gray wasn't included in this tournament. Surely being the former champ should have earned him a spot Jim.

Jim Ross

Actually JT, One Man Gang was originaly schedualed to compete but he has suffered a broken arm which is what led to his being stripped of the title. Despite his rough demeanor and lack of class we want to wishe One Man Gang a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back in the ring real soon. Now then let's dispense with the small talk and get to the first match which is sure to be a real barn burner.

Jerry Lawler VS. Eddie Gilbert with Missy Hyatt

Jerry came out to a huge cheer from this southern crowd. He played up to the crowd for a few minutes before his opponent was announced. Eddie Gilbert with Missy Hyatt to a mixture of boos and cat calls. Eddie taunted the crowd as he made his way to the ring. Eddie and Missy stepped into the ring and Eddie got into the face of Jerry Lawler. Referee Jerry Usher escorted Missy Hyatt out of the ring and as he did Eddie attacked Lawler. The Bell was rung and Eddie worked Lawler over in the corner. Lawler fought his way out of the corner and slammed Eddie hard on the mat. Missy Hyatt jumped up on the ring apron and Lawler got in her face as Eddie got up behind him. Eddie ran at Lawler but Lawler moved and Eddie crashed into Missy Hyatt, sending her to the floor. Lawler grabbed Eddie and landed a huge Piledriver before making the pin.

Winner: Jerry Lawler!

Jim Ross

What a match! It looks like Eddie and Missy are having some words as they head to the back. Perhaps this is the end of that partnership.

Boyd Pierce

No way Jim. Missy and Eddie have been through plenty of ups and downs. This is just another bump on the road for those two. Despite losing Eddie did look really good out there I wouldn't be surprised if he was in line for a title shot some time down the road.

Jim Ross

You could be right Boyd, but we don't have time to speculate right now. We have to take a short break, but when we return we have Dory Funk Jr. taking on Chavo Guerrero!

:::Commercial Break:::

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/DoryFunkJr2_zps6c6216d8.jpghttp://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/ChavoGuerrero3_zps24f62306.jpg

Dory Funk Jr. VS. Chavo Guerrero

Dory and Chavo are already in the ring when we return and within moments we hear the bell ring to start the match. Chavo uses his speed to take Dory down with a series of drop kicks followed by a pin attempt. Dory kicks out and he and Chavo both get to their feet. Chavo tries a lariat but Dory uses a drop toe hold to take Chavo down. Dory then slides over Chavo and locks in a Cloverleaf. Chavo fights the urge to tap out for a brief moment before submitting.

Winner: Dory Funk Jr.

Jim Ross

The technician beats the high flyer tonight. Dory advances but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Chavo Guerrero. Stay tuned folks because we have every ladies favorite wrestler, Michael "P.S." Hayes taking on the son of Larry the Axe Henning, young Curt Henning.

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/CurtHennig2_zps29459636.jpghttp://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/MichaelHayes3_zpsc67fe930.jpg

Curt Henning VS. Michael "P.S." Hayes

Curt Henning comes out to a smattering of boos as the AWA superstar is not welcome here in UWF country. Michael "Pretty Sexy" Hayes comes out to a huge pop as the crowd goes wild for his rocking entrance. Michael gets in the ring and does the moonwalk before dancing around a bit as Curt shakes his head in disgust. The bell rings and Curt comes out with a series of rights that rock Hayes. Henning then hits a hip toss and Hayes rolls to the outside to catch his breath. Henning tries to follow him but the ref holds him back. Hayes slides in the ring and Henning goes right for him. Henning throws a right but Hayes blocks it and unloads a few rights of his own. As Henning is wobbling on his feet, Hayes dances around a bit before taking Henning off his feet with a huge left. Hayes helps Henning to his feet before landing a huge DDT. Hayes makes the pin as the crowd goes crazy.

Winner: Michael "P.S." Hayes

Jim Ross

He may not be your average grappler but Michael Hayes is a crowd pleaser and he picks up the win here tonight. In my opinion it was the lack of experience that cost Henning this one, but after a few more years I wouldn't be surprised if Curt was wearing championship gold.

JT Sweet

Experience only counts for so much Jim. It was Hayes ability to get inside Henning's head that tipped the scales. If Henning was less of a hot head and able to keep himself focused on wrestling his way then I'm sure he would have been the winner here tonight.

Jim Ross

Interesting theory JT and one that I'm sure people will be debating over for years to come. Right now we have to go to another commercial break, but when we return the last of our quarter final matches as Arn Anderson takes on Ted DiBiase!

:::Commercial Break:::

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/ArnAnderson8_zpsc1adae5b.jpghttp://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/TedDiBiase2_zpse214f054.jpg

Arn Anderson VS. Ted DiBiase

Arn Anderson walks out to some cheers as his fame has traveled across the country and reached some fans here in Kansas. Out next comes Ted DiBiase to a resounding boo. Ted doesn't even acknowledge the crowd as he walks into the ring. The ref checks the infamous "black glove" of DiBiase before calling for the bell. Arn and Ted lock up and Ted knees Arn and gets the advantage. Ted then lands a hard elbow to the back of Arn's head. Arn holds his head in pain and Ted uses the opening to come up behind Arn and land a few blows to Arn's back. Ted then takes Arn off his feet with a bulldog before going for a pin. Ted gets a 2 count and both he and Arn get to their feet. Ted comes at Arn with a left but Arn dodges it and hooks Ted in a sleeper hold. As Ted flails his arms wildly the crowd erupts in a huge cheer for Arn. The ref checks if it is a choke and as he does we see Ted reach into his tights and pull something out. Ted stomps on the foot of Arn and Arn lets Ted go. Ted shakes off the drowsiness as Arn grabs him in back body drop position. As Arn lifts Ted up, Ted nails Arn with the object from his tights. Ted and Arn crash on the mat and Ted gets a arm over the unconscious Arn. The ref makes the count and Ted gets the victory to the chagrin of the crowd.

Winner: Ted DiBiase

Jim Ross

We have our final four and it looks like Lawler and Funk will be facing off next. This is a match fans have been clamoring to see for years and the UWF has delivered where so many others have failed. You really won't see action like this anywhere else.

Boyd Pierce

You're right Jim, but that isn't the only match fans have waited to see. We get to see the rematch between Michael Hayes and Ted DiBiase. Unlike their last encounter, Ted no longer has the Rat Pack and all indications point to the other members of the Freebirds not being here either. We are finally going to see just which one of these two is the better man.

Jim Ross

Not to mention we still have the finals between the winners of those great match ups. We'll take a short break then when we return it will be Jerry Lawler taking on Dory Funk Jr.!

:::Commercial Break:::

Jim Ross

We are back folks and it looks like Jerry Lawler is about to make his way out. Lets go to the ring and get this thing back in gear.

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/JerryLawler3_zps319f26c4.jpghttp://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/DoryFunkJr2_zps6c6216d8.jpg

Jerry Lawler VS. Dory Funk Jr.

Jerry Lawler comes out to a bigger pop than in his first match. He no longer plays to the crowd, but looks focused and ready to go. Dory Funk Jr. makes his way out next to a few cheers but the crowd in Kansas still hasn't embraced the native Texan. Dory and Lawler shake hands in a show of respect before the bell is rung and the match starts. Dory catches Lawler with a couple of quick lefts but Lawler quickly recovers and responds with some vicious punches of his own. The two men trade blows back and forth until Lawler finally blocks a right and nails Dory with a stiff European Uppercut that takes Dory off his feet. Lawler goes in for a leglock but Dory kicks him off. Dory gets back to his feet and nails Lawler with a few stiff boots to the gut before taking Lawler down with a nasty looking side suplex. Dory makes a pin but only gets a 1 count. Dory looks frustrated as he tries for another pin, but gets another 1 count. Dory slams his hands on the mat and yells at the ref before helping Lawler to his feet. Dory goes for a suplex but Lawler blocks it before reversing it. Lawler takes the straps of his singlet down and the crowd is on their feet knowing Lawler is preparing to use the Piledriver. Dory stunbles to his feet and Lawler goes in and nails him with a thunderous Piledriver. Lawler makes the pin as the crowd counts along with the ref.

Winner: Jerry Lawler!

Jim Ross

What a match! These two gave their all for a chance to compete for the Universal Championship, but only one man could advance and his name is Jerry Lawler! I have no idea how Michael Hayes and Ted DiBiase will top that match but I'm sure they will try.

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/MichaelHayes3_zpsc67fe930.jpghttp://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/TonyTheGamerDad/UWF/TedDiBiase2_zpse214f054.jpg

Michael "Pretty Sexy" Hayes VS. Ted DiBiase

Michael Hayes comes out to the rocking sound of Baddstreet USA and the crowd goes wild. Everyone is on their feet and singing along with the self proclaimed sexiest man in UWF. Hayes gets into the ring and dances around for the crowd as Ted DiBiase is announced. Ted comes out with a serious look on his face once again ignoring the booing crowd. Ted gets right into the face of Hayes and the two are screaming at each other as the ref calls for the bell. DiBiase knees Hayes in the gut before landing a sick looking elbow to the back of Hayes skull. The crowd groins along with Hayes as he holds his head in pain and stumbles about. DiBiase measures Hayes and lands a hard right to Hayes' face. The ref warns DiBiase about the closed fist but Ted blows him off. Hayes is up on his knees and DiBiase measures him again before nailing another hard right hand. Hayes goes down in a heap and DiBiase makes the pin for the 3 count. After the match the ref demands to see the black glove of DiBiase but Ted refuses before tossing it into the crowd. Ted and the ref argue a bit before the ref just waves his hands in disgust.

Winner: Ted DiBiase!

Jim Ross

What a cheat that DiBiase is! It was obvious he had something in that glove because there is no way he could have taken Michael Hayes out like that otherwise. I mean look at Hayes, he has to be carried out on a stretcher...oh good, DiBiase has a microphone now.

Ted DiBiase

Did you stupid people really think I wasn't going to be the winner? Michael "Prissy Sissy" Hayes isn't half the man I am let alone the same caliber of wrestler, so was there any doubt I would beat him like the dog he is? Speaking of dogs, Jerry Lawler, get out here so I can beat you like you stole something and get what is rightfully mine, the UWF Universal Championship!

Boyd Pierce

What a cocky...you know what guys. I hope Jerry Piledrives his head through the mat!

JT Sweet

Relax Boyd, Ted simply did what he had to in order to win. Can you really blame him?

Jim Ross

Are you serious JT? That man is a cheat and he deserves to be removed from this tournament. If the referee's decision wasn't final I'm sure Bill Watts would be out here telling DiBiase where he can go!

Jerry Lawler VS. Ted DiBiase

Jerry Lawler comes running out from the back and slides into the ring. Lawler pops to his feet and he starts pounding on DiBiase as the bell is rung and the crowd goes nuts. Lawler looks fired up and the crowd pops when he takes DiBiase up and over with a arm drag. Lawler pulls his straps over and the crowd is ready for a new UWF Champion. Ted gets to his feet and Lawler comes at him. Lawler gets close to Ted but DiBiase nails Lawler with a blatant low blow. The ref goes to call for the bell but Lalwler waves his hands as if to say no. DiBiase locks in a bearhug and Lawler slowly begins to lose his strength. The crowd is chanting Lawler's name and with his last ounce of strength, Jerry slaps the head of DiBiase forcing him to release the hold. Ted stumbles back as Lawler falls in a heap. Ted comes in with a right but Lawler punches DiBiase in the gut. Lawler continues to punch him as he gets to his feet and soon Ted is bent forward as Lawler is placing him into the position for the Piledriver. Lawler tries to lift Ted, but DiBiase drops to his knees stopping the move. Lawler tries to get Ted back up, however Ted uses the opportunity to deliver a back body drop on Lawler. Ted gets up to his feet and measures Lawler who is spawled out on his back. Ted leaps up and lands a devastating Jumping Fist Drop. Lawler is busted wide open and DiBiase makes the pin. The ref makes the count...1....2....3!

Winner and New UWF Universal Champion: Ted DiBiase

Jim Ross

What a travesty! That man just cheated his way to a title win and he should be ashamed of himself! Hopefully Bill Watts makes things right next week. See you then folks.

Love old school UWF! Don't appreciate the oil joke at the first! That's my living man!

First off apologies if you thought this was the next part of the tourney. 2ndly, it wasn't a joke Chuck....there is a narrative in the data about UWF losing money due to the oil crisis so I ran with it. Sorry to upset you...

Haha! Was a joke man! Not in the least bit truly offended :D

Just read the part where you said the show isn't over... my mistake!

In all seriousness... love old school UWF. Terry Taylor, Gordy, Doc, Gilbert, Dibiase... was really cutting edge for the little bit it was around and way realistic for the 80s. Can't wait to see how this unfolds!

UWF Champion Ted DiBiase Vs. Chris Adams

Adams is a solid upper-mid hand and will give Dibiase a run for his money.. however Dibiase will end up getting the win... Good perfectly legit title defense by Dibiase against Adams who will do a convincing job no doubt.

Terry Gordy Vs. Sting

One day Sting could be the brightest star in the UWF... I just don't think it is right now just yet.. Gordy still has a lot of mileage in his tank and was one of the best wrestlers alive at this point.

Eddie Gilbert with Missy Hyatt Vs. Terry Taylor

Hardest call of the night. Gilbert was such a talented heel and one of my favorites ever... Taylor was an incredibly gifted hand and if he won... I wouldn't be to upset.

News from around the wrestling World!

AWA Championship Wrestling Shocker!

On Saturday Week 1 of March 1987 the reigning UWF Champion Ted DiBiase was defeated by AWA superstar "Dirty" Dick Slater. In what fans are describing as a superb match, Dick Slater avoided the lethal black glove of DiBiase and was able to apply a punishing bulldog for the win! The AWA fans were reportedly behind their local star despite the fact that he is one of the most hated men in the AWA. Ted DiBiase is said to be rather upset by this loss and is planning on getting revenge as soon as possible.

WWF has new monster slayer!

This past week, Friday week 1 of March to be exact, former UWF Tag Team Champion Junkyard Dog defeated Andre the Giant in WWF Superstars of Wrestling's main event. Andre, who still has yet to be lifted off his feet, was taken out after JYD landed a huge chop block followed by a JYD patented DogButt!

Jim Crocket Promotions features family feud!

Current NWA United States Champion Nikita Koloff defeated his uncle Ivan to retain his championship. The US title match was the main event of World Championship Wrestling which was a great show despite the lack of big names like Ric Flair and The Road Warriors making an appearance at the show.

UWF sets the bar!

This past week on Power Pro Wrestling, the UWF set the bar for wrestling action. It is said they showed the entire country just what the UWF is about and there is even talk about the UWF setting the bar too high for the rest of the country's promotions to reach. Will this lead to a resurgence of Southern Wrasslin or is this the last hurrah for a company on its way out? Only time will tell...

Ted did what he had to in order to become champ and I'm sure it doesn't matter what is thrown at him because he will be holding on to that belt by any means necessary. You see after the show last week I went to see UWF Owner Bill Watts and I demanded a rematch for the UWF Title. Now Bill couldn't just give me another shot at DiBiase. Instead he has given me the chance to earn a rematch. You see, all I have to do is beat Chavo Guerrero tonight and next week I will be winning what should already be mine, the UWF Championship! Chavo, you're a fantastic worker, a great person, and one hell of a performer, but you just happen to be standing between me and Ted. Now normally, I would wish you luck and say let the best man win, but I can't afford that tonight. I have to win and damn it I will win. Ted, take good care of that title because I will be taking it off your hands next week!</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Jim Ross</strong></span></p><p> Strong words from Jerry Lawler folks. I mean, Lawler may want the win, but Chavo has all the tools to take the match here tonight. </p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Jim Ross</strong></span></p><p> You may be right JT, but before we see that fantastic match we have Eddie Gilbert with Missy Hyatt as usual taking on Terry Taylor. The bell rang and Taylor whipped Eddie into the ropes and caught him with a dropkick on the rebound. Terry then landed a jumping elbow drop that took the air out of Gilbert. Terry brought Eddie up and whipped him into the corner. As Terry prepared to follow Eddie into the corner Missy climbed onto the ring apron and got the attention of Taylor. Chavo rebounds off the ropes and Lawler is waiting with a boot to the face. Chavo stumbles about and Lawler locks in a Full Nelson Headlock. Chavo struggles for a moment before quickly pushing Lawler back into a corner forcing him to break the hold. Chavo lands a back elbow before turning around and delivering a lightning fast arm drag. Lawler pops up to his feet and the crowd is on their feet. Chavo runs in for a lariat, but Lawler ducks under it and hits the ropes. The two men rebound off the ropes toward each other and Lawler lands a huge body press. Lawler makes the pin but only gets a 2 count. In tragic news, the Iron Sheik has passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Rumors abound that drugs may have been involved in his death, but no evidence to that fact has been found. Sources close to the WWF say that the Iron Sheik was going to begin a long feud with Hulk Hogan and this has but a huge hole in their plans.</p></div><p></p><p></p>

Digging the Hyperion name. One thing I would ask, is maybe give us a list of who are heel or face? I get the gist of most people, but it's tough to tell sometimes. I really hope this thing with Gilbert is going somewhere, because I'd love to see "Hotstuff" make something for himself here.</p>

As Chavo Guerrero came out to a small pop, Eddie was ordering Missy to stay put. The bell rang and Eddie quickly took control with a dropkick to Chavo's face. Eddie rebounded off the ropes and landed a quick knee to Chavo's leg. Eddie got up and stomped away at Chavo until the ref forced him back. Chavo got to his feet and Eddie landed a kick to Chavo's leg taking Chavo down once again. Eddie climbed the top rope and was prepared to leap on Chavo when he spied Missy flirting with a fan. Eddie got off the turnbuckle and went over to where Missy was yelling and screaming the whole time. Eddie shoved the fan and the two exchanged words as the ref began his ten count. Eddie slapped the fan and security rushed the area. Missy tried to pull Eddie away but before she could the bell rang and Chavo was declared the winner by count out. The champion comes out next to a huge boo but he laughs it off. When both men are in the ring the ref checks DiBiase's black glove. Ted protests but the ref takes it from him as the crowd cheers. Lawler grabs the distracted DiBiase and lifts him up in a suplex. DiBiase crashes hard on the mat and the crowd is loving it. Lawler pulls his straps down and it looks like he wants to end it quick. DiBiase is on his feet and Lawler kicks him in the gut. Jerry then sets DiBiase up for a Piledriver as Ted tries to fight it off. As Jerry tries to get Ted up Hyperion comes running out to the ring with Shiek Akbar right behind him. Hyperion slides into the ring and then nails Lawler with a huge boot to the face. The ref calls for the bell as Hyperion lifts Lawler up off the mat and presses him up above his head. Hyperion walks around the ring with Lawler still above his head before tossing letting Jerry fall down hard on the mat. Hyperion then picks Jerry up again as the ref calls for the bell which is ringing wildly.
