Frankie Future vs. Mario Heroic

Virtually nobody's interested in this match, however fired up they may have been while the HollyWeird Girls were dancing. The contest itself isn't bad, but also isn't great; there's no real sense of anything but one-upsmanship, which slowly builds to the point where Frankie connects with the Futureshock and guarantees the win.

Frankie Future defeated Mario Heroic

Rating: E+

Future doesn't have long to celebrate, though; barely has his arm been raised before Monty Walker is in his face, staring him down.

There's no microphone, but even people unacquainted with labiomancy can tell what Walker's saying: What's your problem?

Future grins. Shaking his head slightly, he can actually be heard, just about, on the ring camera's mic pick-up.

“Just business,” he says. “I just want a proper title shot, to be frank.”

Monty stares at him. Jason Azaria reminds watching fans of the hypocrisy in Frankie's original approach, and wonders aloud what a 'proper' title shot might be.

Walker unfastens his title belt. Still watching Future's eyes, close against him, he raises the title high, a proud boast.

Frankie shrugs, backing away. “Not when I've just had a fight,” he half-observes, half-promises.

The Maple Leafs are a new team who Azaria gives rave reviews, noting that they've done well in small promotion Lightning Strike Wrestling before finding an opening to come to HGC and try their hand in the big leagues.

And they fight like a big league team, with the rainbow-haired Slapshot flying and working on the mat hard, the big man Grinder throwing Steadyfast and Oxford around with huge suplexes.

They do well against their rivals, but it's hard for a referee to see everything at once, and when Troy Tornado soars to wipe Grinder out with a Star Maker slingshot lariat, Oxford isolates Slapshot and gets the pin.

The Untouchables defeated the Maple Leafs

Rating: D

Paul Blood shows he has an impressive skillset, not to mention the courage to walk down the aisle on a big show and face the fans without fear. He makes one mistake, though; he moves to throwing hands early on, and the heavyweight Power is less than impressed, barely rocking back on some impacts. Jimmy retaliates with a short-arm lariat and goes to town, ultimately executing the Powerbomb Deathlock to lock in a submission and earn Jimmy a win.

Jimmy Power defeated Paul Blood

Rating: D

With the exposure these women are getting it's no wonder that the fans pay attention at this point, and the two wrestlers seize the opportunity to prove a point. No stipulations here, no unusually skimpy clothing, (although Ayesha's outfit isn't exactly stock sportswear), just two wrestlers giving it their all.

Ayesha nearly wins after flying over the top rope to the outside, wiping Victoria out. She makes it back into the ring only at the count of nine, while Ayesha was already celebrating. Victoria ultimately reverses a suplex attempt, hitting a German suplex of her own to pick up the pin.

Victoria defeated Ayesha

Rating: D+

What Heat's doing in a championship match is debated by the announcers, but during the match he makes it look like he might be able to win, beating down on Strong with great gusto for a long period within the match before the ultimate hero finally gets into the swing of the contest, rallying and polishing him off with the crowd on their feet and a Strong Arm Tactic.

Sam Strong defeated The Insane Heat

Rating: B-

The Insane Heat grabs a mic after the match. “You can't ignore the Heat,” he growls. “You can try, but sooner or later if you don't watch the Heat you get burned.

“Pangrazzio, you went straight to one man when you found your dad was gone, didn't you? You jumped to conclusions. But you've made more than one enemy, you son of a bitch. Plenty of choices.

“Don't ignore the Heat, Pangrazzio. Don't imagine for a moment it wouldn't come back to burn you.”

He throws the microphone at the ring announcer and storms off.

Two clashing styles here; a very North American blend of brutality and technical excellence, and the speed and grace of the luchador. The match see-saws back and forth several times, but little by little the luchadores demonstrate better cohesion; the ego of their opponents is enough to prevent them from working perfectly together regardless.

Toward the end of the match, Mr Lucha sets up to piledriver Constantino. Heartthrob, enraged, comes into the ring and immediately gets cut off by Electrico with a missile dropkick – at which point Lucha transitions from a piledriver setup to instead hit the Master Drop, getting the win.

Mucha Lucha defeated Rocky Constantino & Romeo Heartthrob

Rating: D+

We go to a video sequence as we come back from commercial. Cowboy Ricky Dale is quite probably not at the arena tonight; we find him roadside, a sign advertising the location of the shoot as being only about a mile from College Station, the home of Texas A&M. Ricky stands near a largeish rock just by the road, his eyes on the road, the rock, the horizon... anywhere but the camera.

“We went to college here,” he says. “That's where we met, me and Sean. We met on the football team.

“Tried out for wrestling. Didn't make it, either of us, believe it or not.” He smiles wistfully. “You can watch me fight today, you'll see I wouldn't get many points in that kind of wrestling. But I don't go down and when I hit you, you stay hit.

“We graduated. Fell in with a guy who was trying out for the TWL. We figured we'd go along, checked in using our football nicknames – Sidewinder and Winchester. And they saw potential. My other buddy, he didn't make it. Went back to throwing drunks out in Victoria, but we... we were going places, I tell ya.”

He nods, a tear forming in his eye. “Nineteen ninety-three, we were headin' back home after a show. We'd both been drinkin', I admit, but we were young, we figured we could handle it.” A pause. “I figured I could handle this.

“I don't remember the crash. I don't remember most of the drive, even. I remember waking up late the next day... but hey. I woke up the next day. Sidewinder lived on, but Winchester was gone, and more important, Sean was dead.”

He lets that hang in the air a while.

“There's not a day goes by I don't think about that night. There's not a day goes by I don't remember the good times with Sean. Big guy, he was, but he was always laughing, always smiling. If you weren't on the football field or in the ring, he was gentle's a kitten.

“I still see his girlfriend every day. I live with it, believe me. And if I could change time, if I could make it so I died and my friend lived, then... in a heartbeat. He was the better man.

“But I've got to make me a living. Life's still going on.”

There's something about these two together that really gels brilliantly, but that's brilliantly compared to what they can do on their own. The match's story is still incredibly stop-start, incredibly erratic and confused in cases, though the Hype does appear to finally be getting good reactions from the crowd.

And that definitely makes Joel Bryant a more hated man after he finally connects with the One Shot Drop.

Joel Bryant defeated The Hype

Rating: D+

Walker and Pangrazzio Jr give the fight of their lives here, Walker hurling himself into the opposition with flair while Pangrazzio goes hold-for-hold with Chord for a while, impressing Azaria sharply. Teddy Flame gives Walker a surprising run for his money in flying – it seems like the man's pulled a few new moves out of his hat since nailing his brother with a superkick – and the whole thing keeps everyone enthusiastically cheering in the crowd, but it can only go so long.

Chord bundles Pangrazzio out of the ring, cheerfully taunts him with “Not your day yet,” then turns, catching Walker with a blow to the gut. “I know you,” he tells him. “Knew exactly how long it'd take you to get here.” And then the Rip Chord DDT lands, scoring a fall just before a surprisingly late final commercial.

Rip Chord & Teddy Flame defeated Monty Walker & Richie Pangrazzio Jr

Rating: B-

The cameras are backstage when the show returns. The hulking Stardusts are gathered before a monitor, alongside Rip Chord, who's tapping a long thin baton against the screen at a freeze-framed moment where he was countering Pangrazzio Junior.

“...wouldn't work on everyone,” he says. “I was relying on him being around as fast as he is right now. Homicide's messed that shoulder up a bit lately, which has a lot to do with why I took the risk. It all comes back to the basic rule I've been teaching you. You got to know your enemy. Then you load up with just what you need to put... them... down. You get me?”

They nod, and the camera cuts back to the arena as the primal scream that heralds the Demons of Rage's iconic theme tune begins to play.

The Demons enter the ring, glowering at the fans while they ready themselves for the match. Sam Sparrow checks them over for concealed weapons as the music shifts and the Vessey Brothers head to the ring, Bryan in particular looking absolutely furious, and with the Coach missing it's not hard to see why. It's clear he wants to take some frustrations out.

The Demons leave the ring for a few moments while Sparrow checks the Vesseys, too, for weapons.

And then the lights go out. The Beautiful People begins to play. The first white strobe shows Bubb assaulting Spite while Nemesis hammers Bryan Vessey; by the second, partners have come to the rescue of their allies. As the second goes out, however, fireballs flare in the darkness by the two focal points of the brawl.

The third strobe only shows the Vesseys and the Demons. Anger and Larry are on the ground, both men clutching at their faces, writhing in pain.

The lights come back up. The Powers of Hell are nowhere to be seen. Bryan Vessey gives vent to a scream of rage and hurls himself at the one other wrestler standing, assaulting Demon Anger with incredible intensity, as the other referees spill down the entryway to help Sparrow break it all up.

Somewhere in there, as the separation becomes sure, Sam Sparrow gets word to the ring announcer, who confirms that the main event has been cancelled.

HGC goes off air with silence from the fans and the announce team as EMTs attend Larry Vessey and Demon Anger.

Ricky Dale Johnson, settled back in a wooden chair on his Tennessee ranch's porch, takes a long pull at the beer in his hand before starting to speak.</p><p> </p><p>

“I went to HGC because it was the highest bid I got after TWL folded,” he says. “But as far as I was concerned it was just another wrestling promotion, the same kind of thing TWL had been. I didn't realise that, when you get enough money, everything changes. I figured that out when the office handed me airline tickets in and out of Texas, sometime in the first half of ninety-seven, when our tour loop was nowhere near Texas.</p><p> </p><p>

“Now, ask anyone I've worked with, they'll tell you I give the company 100%. You pay me, I'll do what you ask. You ask too much, I'll remember when it comes time to renegotiate. So I go to the plane, and I sit down and Brittany Fisher's sat next to me – one of the HGC camera crew who did backstage stuff, she worked on the Charlie Homicide pieces in particular. J.K. and Sam, they were paying to fly me and a crew out to Easterwood, rent a van for the gear and drive us to College Station to film a single bit for the program I was in, then do the same the following week with Peter and Thatcher.</p><p> </p><p>

“Not that that was the only thing they did there, either.” He half-smiles, taking another swig. “Like I said, when you got enough money in hand, everything changes. I wasn't working house shows that week, either. I was out the loop to film that, just to build the feud. The Homicide stuff, I'd understood. Same with going to Lucha's house to shoot a promo with his family. Those were about getting the character over, but all this was doing was getting the back half of a rivalry over.</p><p> </p><p>

“Sam, not so much. But J. K. and Nemesis – J.K. <em>because</em> Nemesis – had a lot of plans about updating professional wrestling. About changing it. So the money appeared for stuff that hadn't happened before.”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>–</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://s293.photobucket.com/user/trenchcoatbrigand/media/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/TimWestybrook_alt_zpsdcdc19fd.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Everybody%20Knows/HGC%20Guys/TimWestybrook_alt_zpsdcdc19fd.jpg</span></a></p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The big man runs a hand over his shaved scalp as he always does in shoot interviews; a mannerism that seems to give him great support when composing his thoughts.</p><p> </p><p>

“So after a couple years working the indies back home as The Iron Man, I'm Grinder. And I'm suddenly a tag guy.” He smiles. “You make a lot of changes over a career, and that turned out to be a biggie. HGC tag champs, eventually, with a guy I'd barely met before Nemesis hired us. HGC champs, then on to Japan. PGHW Elite Series – that was sweet. Inaugural 21CW champs over in Britain – weird hire, but hey, we had name value. It just took us fifteen years to get back to Canada; well, to a Canadian company. Fifteen years as a tag team, so far...</p><p> </p><p>

“You never can tell, you know? I mean, we got told we were jobbing. We got told that was why the gimmick. And considering what we were being paid for it, we were... well, we weren't happy, but we were happy enough. It was a hell of a place to learn.</p><p> </p><p>

“I'll tell you this, Giant Redwood's not as big a dick as people make out. If he gets in a fight with Big Smack here with the DeColts, I know whose back I've got.”</p>

One question, Grinder says he was a weird choice for 21CW. In this timeline, what version of 21CW we looking at? I wouldn't say a PGHW Elite Series winner - unless that came after - would be a weird hire for the original 21CW pre-Nova buyout but if we have a 21CW that has always been a sports entertainment company then aye, it would be a tad weird.

DaVE Total Disruption is coming this week! Don't wait around for the Tuesday Night Wars - the best show of the month will be this Sunday. And believe us, it'll be big...</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tommy Cornell</strong> is in for the fight of his life. Forget what you thought you knew; he's up against the American Everyman,<strong> Freddie Datsun</strong>, and if he can make it through that, THEN we'll know something about him. And I've got to tell you, I'm not expecting it.</p><p> </p><p>

Tag team action next, as the Dynamite Duo continue their on-off battle with Death Metal. Can Professor Nero turn around his proteges' difficulties? If the Intelligent Monster says they're DaVE material, we can't argue, but they clearly still need forging.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Fyte</strong> is scheduled to clash with the representative of Canadian technique, <strong>Thomas Morgan</strong>. The smart money's on Morgan getting taken apart... but we said that about his series against Eric Tyler around the turn of the year.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Vin Tanner</strong>'s thrown down an <strong>open challenge</strong>. Phil Vibert has told us that he can confirm it's been accepted, but that he can't tell us who by - but that we should expect "<strong>an Xtreme level of talent</strong>".</p><p> </p><p>

The <strong>American Monsters</strong> are looking to defend the <strong>DaVE Tag Team titles</strong>, as you'd expect. But their first defence could be their last - you overlook the <strong>Darkness Warriors</strong> at your peril, and those who do are never the same again.</p><p> </p><p>

So what of <strong>the Wolverine</strong>'s assault on the champs last month? Is he biding his time? Aligned with the Warriors? Crazier than 99% of s**thouse rats? Whatever the case, he's going toe to toe with <strong>Monty Walker</strong>, and Walker has promised to once again show he's DaVE to the core...</p><p> </p><p>

And in the main event, <strong>Johnny Martin</strong> gets his rematch for the <strong>DaVE Extreme Championship</strong> - but as well as facing <strong>JD Morgan</strong> he'll also have to deal with the insane <strong>Henry Lee</strong>, a wildcard introduced into the match by Phil Vibert, who's also made it clear the contest will take place under <strong>elimination rules</strong>. Is Vibert stacking the deck? Is Lee making a deal with the devil? Can JD Morgan prove he can still hang with the ever-improving DaVE, all these years after his first reign?</p><p> </p><p>

A door along the wall slams open and Tommy Cornell stomps out, stripped to the waist but wearing jeans. In a great many ways, it's as close as DaVE comes to offering fanservice to its female fans.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s293.photobucket.com/user/trenchcoatbrigand/media/Everybody%20Knows/DaVE%20Guys/EmmaChase_alt4_zpsf468b014.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Everybody%20Knows/DaVE%20Guys/EmmaChase_alt4_zpsf468b014.jpg</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p>

He's followed by Easy Emma, and Cornell's frown is in direct contrast to her smirk – although that vanishes instantly as Cornell begins to wheel.</p><p> </p><p>

“Screw that,” he says. “I'd have to be some kind of muppet to go for that. I'm not doing it.”</p><p> </p><p>

“You are, Tommy,” Emma says. “Because if you pass our exam, we'll make you.”</p><p> </p><p>

“I made myself.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Too good for TV. We both know it. But DaVE isn't what it should be. It has no respect for tradition, <em>and</em> it has no sense of the future. Eric and I are agreed on this.” A beat. “So are Eddie and Dan, for what it's worth.</p><p> </p><p>

“If you can beat Freddie Datsun, right now, without the School, then the School can make wrestling what you are. We can reforge this around you. We can prove they were wrong to fire you, prove these idiots have no idea what wrestling can be. Innovate. Improve. Refine.</p><p> </p><p>

“If you can beat Freddie Datsun, right now, then I swear to you – you and I and Eric will make each other billionnaires in less than a decade.</p><p> </p><p>

“If you want to pass that up, then you fail the exam instantly, because you're clearly not who we thought you are, still less what <em>you</em> think you are.”</p><p> </p><p>

She points back through the locker room door. “Class is in session, Tommy. And I grade... on a curve.” She winks.</p><p> </p><p>

Cornell stares at her for a long moment, then stalks back into the locker room.</p><p> </p><p>

Freddie Datsun w/ Miss Bliss vs. Tommy Cornell w/ Easy Emma</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

What a battle. Throughout the ring; outside the ring, in the first four rows. They get everywhere. They certainly both get in referee Dewey Libertine's face, over and over again, challenging him on everything. Whether Datsun heard Easy Emma's statements or not isn't clear, but it's clear that he's got no intention of falling here.</p><p> </p><p>

Cornell is working to wear Datsun down, but he's not limiting himself to weaponry, and the two really do put on the most astonishing contest, finally returning to the ring where Cornell renews an attack on Datsun's shoulder then clamps down the Guilt Trip.</p><p> </p><p>

Freddie Datsun never taps out, but Libertine does call for the bell, citing a submission. But why?</p><p>

Fyte vs. Thomas Morgan</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The contest itself really is as close as it gets, and almost nobody cares – although Morgan does manage to get some support by the end. Fyte hammers him relentlessly, but Morgan takes advantage of a Philly crowd. He shows what it is to stretch a man, and after countering a spinebuster attempt, he puts Fyte in an armlock.</p><p> </p><p>

The brawler is writhing in agony but won't quit, no matter what, as the fans finally start to buy into this a little. Fyte yells “NO!” over and over again. And in the end, an expression on his face of a man not wanting to do this, Morgan moves his arm a notch further back. Fyte screams... and yields.</p><p> </p><p>

“...broke my f**king arm,” Fyte can be heard saying as he limps away.</p><p>

American Monsters © vs. The Darkness Warriors</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The tag teams do battle, and finally the titles are on the line – and the Warriors dominate through cohesion. The Monsters don't have that, nearly so much, but Roy takes a hell of a beating and Diaz dishes one out almost as hard.</p><p> </p><p>

It starts to break down in classic DaVE style a few minutes in. The Warriors go to the chairs and so does Roy; Diaz, meanwhile, starts throwing punches, lefts and rights, keeping the Warriors from being able to connect with him, until Stephens gets a break, cleaning house on Jay; Raul low blows him, then DDTs him to the chair. Diaz grabs Raul and tosses him over the top rope, then Stun Guns a recovering Jay to secure the win.</p><p>

It's not a bad exhibition, and the hard-hitting brawler doesn't clash with his high-flying opponent at all. He manages to counter Wolverine's attempt to again put him through a table, sending the big guy onto the table with a superkick before setting a chair on top of him and springing to the top rope. One big splash later, the fight is over.</p><p>

JD Morgan © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Henry Lee vs. Johnny Martin</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Battle rages out of control very quickly here. Henry Lee makes a startlingly good showing, hard punches and seeming utter lack of strategy making him hard for Morgan to counter.</p><p> </p><p>

Johnny Martin, meanwhile, wants his title back. As always, one of DaVE's greatest heroes is interested in the prize, and he'll go through either man to get it.</p><p> </p><p>

Henry Lee ultimately falls to Morgan, rolling him down into the Cross-Atlantic Stretch to make him tap out, while Martin loiters in the background, watching.</p><p> </p><p>

Morgan makes his way back to his feet; Martin is close behind, fingers flexing, ready to unleash the Twist on the Rocks - </p><p> </p><p>

Derek Barnes lays him out with a chairshot to the back of the head. Another. Then another. And then Morgan applies the Cross-Atlantic Stretch, and with a furious expression on his face, Dewey Libertine checks Martin's arm.</p><p> </p><p>

It falls once... twice... three times.</p><p>

Monty Walker hits the ring, going nose to nose, not with Morgan, but with Vibert. He takes the headset off Vibert's head, placing it on his own.</p><p> </p><p>

“YOU-SOLD-OUT! YOU-SOLD-OUT!” come the jubilant cries of the fans, waiting in hope that Vibert will be taken down.</p><p> </p><p>

“Maybe I did,” Walker replies, acknowledging it with a bigger grin than usual. “But I've got an idea.</p><p> </p><p>

“If I take that belt,” and he points at Morgan's waist, “off these a**holes...</p><p> </p><p>

“That's got to be me buying back in, right?”</p><p> </p><p>

Morgan shakes his head slowly. “May was the first time Phil let Tommy try booking things, and boy did it end up confused. It could've been better, I think – the original idea was that Tommy and Eric would work together on the card. I wish they had, because the whole thing was a mess. But we'd only been able to book Penn Park the same night Eric – and Eddie, and Dan – were all busy in Canada.</p><p> </p><p>

“The person you put me against if you want to boost my profile isn't Omar, and I'm not convinced that putting him out of town changed anything. I mean, I'm not saying I wasn't happy to score a win – that part was great. I needed them, back then. It was never exactly going to be a great match, although I liked the ending. Omar didn't want to look weak on his way out, and Tommy suggested pushing it further.</p><p> </p><p>

“So that's how 'Crippler' Morgan got started.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Shawn getting signed was such a load of BS,” Sinclair confirms vehemently.</p><p> </p><p>

“Sure, OK, he's the champ. And that's money when he jumps ship. He's the booker, too. So that's all to the good. But they coulda signed Kurt, they coulda signed me. I was nearly AMW champ at the time, and AMW was falling apart. Coulda brought me in, title on title, would've taken DaVE to the next level a whole hell of a lot faster.</p><p> </p><p>

“I'll admit I wanted out. XFW was being gutted. Shawn went to DaVE. The Peaks, Colossus, Jimmy Brandon, a couple others all ended up with HGC. So did my girl.</p><p> </p><p>

“You gotta wonder what was going on. I was making a name. Sam Strong ain't a fool; me and him woulda been good business.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jason Jackson </strong>takes on a man with a similar level of pedigree in the business as the show begins this week.<strong> Teddy Flame</strong> turned his back on his brother a month ago, and it sure seems like he's ridden the wave of momentum ever since. But New School remains a man you underestimate at your peril...</p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile, Liberty continues to arrange only the toughest tests of Young Blood; this time younger brother <strong>Paul Blood</strong> takes on <strong>Dusty Streets </strong>in what must be the biggest challenge of young Paul's career.</p><p> </p><p>

After his last outing, we regret we must confirm that Golden Fox sustained injuries severe enough to retire him from the ring. Dark EAGLE has called upon his worldwide network of partners, friends, and students, and found a new ally. Calling themselves <strong>Shining Force</strong>, they look to prove a point against the tag champs themselves - but can a light truly be lit against the <strong>Powers of Hell</strong>?</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Joshuya & Ota</strong> bring a Japanese style to HGC, as do their opponents; but with the PPV looming, will the super juniors derail the contenders' momentum and move up the tag rankings when they take on the <strong>Black Serpent Cult</strong>?</p><p> </p><p>

A grudge match ignites next, as <strong>the Insane Heat</strong> once again looks to topple <strong>Richie Pangrazzio Jr</strong> - and Richie will want to find out what's happened to his father, after the Heat's hints last week that he had something to do with it. We hear Coach Dick still hasn't been seen after he vanished - nearly three weeks ago, now.</p><p> </p><p>

Speculation is mounting on HGC's web forums regarding Whistler. A decorated veteran of the minor leagues, <strong>Whistler</strong> has many of the tools used by the biggest names in wrestling - but little big league experience. Is he making a mistake by always setting his sights on those big names? Does he need to season his game first? Whatever the case, he has <strong>Dread</strong> firmly in his sights - and that means Philly's own patriot is standing in the shadow of fear.</p><p> </p><p>

Two savvy veterans. Two men with experience to spare and a history of gold to back it up. <strong>Rip Chord</strong> is the man most would consider the dark side of experience, but <strong>Larry Vessey </strong>has walked in the shadows himself. With Coach Dick's honor on the line, with the Stardusts eager to learn, who'll come through on the night?</p><p> </p><p>

As the song comes to an end Lady Melissa suddenly has a microphone in hand – and where she gets that from is anyone's guess.

“Let's finish this, Untouchables,” she coos. “We should be done with all this by now.

“There's four of you. I can find four guys. Be there Sunday, and let's make an end of it.”

“New School” has a poor record in terms of wins and losses, but he's building up a reputation among the fans for being able to deliver with any opponent – and Teddy Flame is more talented than many of his recent foes.

Jackson targets his leg, looking to take much of Teddy's capability away, throughout the match, forcing the former tag team legend to improvise. He chooses a few choice shortcuts, with underhand behaviour now finally being caught on camera prior to an opening for the Flame On – and that wins Teddy the match, much to the disapproval on commentary of brother Joey.

Rating: C+

Backstage go the cameras – and they catch Rocky Constantino, naked but for a blue towel around his waist and the Cruiserweight Championship belt atop it. He's carrying a bucket of ice with a champagne bottle visible poking from the top. He sees the camera and falters.

“Oh, man, isn't this later in the show?”

“...nope?” offers a voice from behind the camera. Constantino sighs and raps his knuckles on a locker room door.

“They're here,” he announces. There's a pause.

Then the door opens and a familiar face from another channel steps out. “Tag me out, man,” says Hollywood Mike Kinsey, adjusting his own towel. “The ladies have been well and truly Scaled... and they're ready to be on the Rocks.”

Constantino chuckles and disappears inside. Kinsey looks at the camera.

“So my buddies tell me they're having problems with masked men,” he says. “Well, Hollywood Mike always says you can open new horizons in a threesome... and me, I hear the luchadores are meant to be really at home in threes.

“So the only question, really, is if you've got another friend... but if you have, homo-bres, bring it on.

“I'm thinking that this Pay-Per-View will register... on the Kinsey Scale.”

“If you ask me,” Kyle Rhodes begins, “Paul Blood is well out of his league.” Jason chides him for not giving the youngster a chance, and Blood, while not unveiling any new moves, wrestles smarter – something Azaria highlights on commentary, noting that his moves are flowing together more logically and more effectively.

Dusty has a control for a lot of the match, but it's by no means as one-sided a match as it might've been- Blood even hits a big Samoan drop from the second rope at one point, but the veteran Streets is in perfect position to grab the rope and break the count despite the impact. He rallies, coming back to connect with the Dust-Off, and picking up a pin shortly after.

Dusty Streets defeated Paul Blood

Rating: D+

Teddy Flame is seen as the commercials end, sat on the top turnbuckle, feet resting on the second rope, holding a mic and staring down the camera.

“There comes a time,” he says, “in any man's life when he has to step out and stand on his own. Our father said that to us when we were only ten years old, and up until this year I thought he was talkin' crap.

“Joey, man... I hate to say this. Because, so long, you and me? Same guy. Same belts. Same wins. Same skills. Same fans.

“Same ringrats. And...” He grins. “Yeah, I may have b**ged your wife. Like, a lot.

“I mean, I'm not saying the twins are mine, but you should probably get them checked.

“And I'm not sure you'd've minded, back before all this. Because like I say – you and me, same guy.

“Not so much, now. But that's your problem. We ran together. We worked together. And...

“You stumbled, Joey.

“I never had a brother. I had a second me... but he fell.

“And on Sunday, he'll fall again, and he'll never get up.

“The fire still burns, but it only has one Flame.”

The first outing for the new combination of super juniors, and it's a hard fight they have in front of them – but they acquit themselves well, with Hisato in particular showing off, soaring over the top rope to nail both of the Powers with a suicide corkscrew crossbody.

It's a good outing, but it's not good enough to dethrone the champs, who get back in control quickly, Bubb throwing Hisato back out of the ring so that Nemesis can land the Nemesis Arrow on Dark EAGLE without fear of an interrupted pin.

The Powers of Hell defeated Shining Force

Rating: C+

Another battle in much the same style, it's a little less well-received – but then, the Super Juniors have amassed a weaker record, and there's nothing quite as stylish as Hisato's wild stunt in the previous match.

The Cult certainly show greater unity than did the Powers of Hell, despite their weaker individual strength, and that's what gives them the edge, Cobra ducking some sort of thrown shiny thing Ota had wielded and baiting him in so Viper can strike with the Dragon's Breath.

Black Serpent Cult defeated Joshuya & Ota

Rating: C-

The camera pans around a hillside cemetery in beautiful sunshine, coming to a halt after a while to reveal Peter Valentine and Charlie Thatcher, both wearing sombre black suits. Valentine has a gaudy purple handkerchief square in his suit jacket; Thatcher is wearing shades.

“Welcome to Texas!” Valentine says cheerfully. “Right about now, the Cowboy probably just spat beer all over his TV screen. Because he'll recognise this place. Over there,” the camera follows his pointing finger, “just past that clump of trees, is a certain grave.

“The grave... of Sean Martyn. Because Ricky Dale needs to confront his past. He needs to admit that he cost a man his life.

“He needs to admit he's not deserving of what he's been handed.

“So Charlie and me, we're gonna- Charlie?”

The camera pans back round to find Valentine on his own, then pans further – to find Charlie Thatcher having joined a mourning party. The Licenced Cougar Hunter towers over a shapely black-clad woman in a veil, obviously talking to her – though too far away to make out what.

And then he makes a gesture that makes it all too obvious.

“CHARLIE!”

Thatcher gives it a moment longer, then pulls a small white card from his pocket and presses it into the widow's hand before turning and walking back, long stride and quick pace eating up distance.

“Right,” Valentine sighs. “Are you done?”

Thatcher shrugs, smiling vaguely.

The two proceed, the camera following them, up toward the copse of trees and through. Peter chuckles. “Shouldn't have drunk so much on the drive over,” he says. “Still... might come in handy.”

And then they get through the trees... and stop short.

“What. The. F**k?” Thatcher asks, the big man who almost never speaks apparently rattled. The camera rushes to catch up.

Sean Martyn's gravestone remains, but where the grave should be is a broken mess of uprooted earth and shattered wood.

Back to the ring, and the Heat, fresh off a very powerful showing in a shot for the World Heavyweight Championship, seems a little more frustrated this time at being unable to go to the illegal shots and weapons-based offence of a hardcore match – but then, as Azaria notes, he's faced Pangrazzio in a hardcore arena before, and maybe that has an effect.

At any rate, this is brutal – Richie himself is pushing the limit of the legal, but as Azaria reminds us, the Heat may have admitted to the abduction of Richie's father, the legendary Coach Dick Pangrazzio. The All-Star Team member manages to keep himself under control, just barely, and finally cinches in the All-Star Lock, forcing the Heat to tap out.

Richie Pangrazzio Jr defeated The Insane Heat

Rating: C

As the Heat submits, the big screen goes from match footage to static.

“I think,” Charlie Homicide's voice says over the sound system, “of this place, and of people... not worthy, not commendable...”

The static resolves. Coach Dick is stripped to the waist, duct-taped to a rotting wall in Charlie Homicide's unhealthy home, bleeding and bruised around an eye, ribs also a welter of swelling purple bruise.

“No understanding of the cost of kindness,” Homicide continues, “But they are all, if not men, of some... peculiar genius... all touched by a common genius, united against the fool which divided them.”

He steps into shot. “I battle with a king at the fall of his career. With three men, and more, hung from the rafters, and others, died forgotten here and abroad.”

He pauses.

“The weakest has been culled. The chaff are separating from the wheat, and the honoured men arise.

“Be one of them, Junior, I beseech you. Be one of them – and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”

Whistler has never looked so fired up as he does here. He plays to the crowd throughout the match, no matter how much punishment he takes en route; and, in addition, he does genuinely seem to thrive on their support.

That makes him almost a potential threat to the shadow of fear, but those threats are few and far between, and Dread has had time to rest before this match – a fact Azaria brings up, wondering if Sneer is favouring him going into the Test of Steel, but Rhodes blows that idea off with gusto.

Dread blocks the first Rebel Yell but falls to the second, though he then kicks out; Whistler doesn't quite avoid the Dreadsault, and that's all it takes.

But then, it almost never takes more.

Larry's a smart veteran himself, and a few of the tricks Chord deploys more casually go awry; that flows into a lengthy sequence where the two men aim to outwrestle one another more than they do anything else.

Larry doesn't do too badly on that exchange, perhaps surprisingly, but Rip manages to come through in a better position once they reach the end, and from there, despite Larry's best efforts, he never quite loses it; the Rip Chord DDT hits with a crack, and professional wrestling's greatest mind picks up the win.

To the tune of Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me a video begins to play. Intercut with flashes of the PPV logo come clips from the last month of HGC broadcasting...

“TITLE MATCH IN TWO!” Walker yells. “WHO WANTS IT BAD ENOUGH TO BE A MAN?”

A few faces perk up, then consider the opponent they'd have and subside.

“Yeah, OK.” Someone pushes himself forward from his leaning position on a wall. Frankie Future steps up close. Walker smirks.

“You ain't exactly got a great record,” he tells him. Future shrugs. “Problem?”

“This title should mean-” Monty cuts himself off. “Actually, whatever. You've got balls at least. Let's do this.”

--

The two come out of a fluid sequence into a standoff, hesitate, then low blow one another. Eugene Williams calls the DQ.

--

Strong was already hurt. He was barely cleared to compete tonight. And he's had to fight Demons, Charlie Homicide, even his own team. And Dread... Dread is fresh. It counts for something; in the end, it counts for countering an attempted superplex, sending Strong crashing to the mat, before hitting the Dreadsault... and getting the three.

--

“Want, want, want,” Valentine begins. “Of course you want things, cowboy. We all do. But do you deserve what you want? I mean, sure, you could get it – but Sean can't, can he?”

The Cowboy pales.

“Yeah,” Valentine grins. “I know all about Sean, cowboy. You want something? What you want is to ask yourself how you can live with that. How you can live with what you did.”

--

“I'm not sure I'd want to play with you, Monty. If that's even your real name.”

Walker blinks. “The hell?”

“Just being frank,” Future says, smiling smugly. “You cheated, Monty, cheated to retain your title.

“And that's dishonest. I hoped you were better than that.”

Shane is stood on the edge of a chain-link cube, sixteen feet on each side, with a full roof.

“I call this the Test of Steel,” he says. “Nobody gets in. Nobody gets out. The match goes until it ends. You cannot possibly screw this one up, and not even Dread – not even Sam Strong – can get two and a half tonnes of steel out of their way.

“But I'm going to warn you both...

“I've spent this afternoon getting to know this bad boy.” He reaches into his suit jacket and pulls out a short black length of metal piping. He brings it down, three times, on the roof, letting the sound echo around.

“I've got half a mind to book you both hospital beds if you accept this. You put each other through hell in just a cage. This Test could break you. You hit hard... steel hits harder. The combination could break bones. Cause concussions. Crack your skull or your spine.

“You two are so fixated on each other that I built the ultimate finale for your grudge. But personally, I hope this is a wake-up call.

“I don't want you both retired. I want you both healthy and wrestling for HGC. And I think the fans do too.

“So please... wake up. Don't do this.”

--

“A month ago that cage was a weapon in our hands, brother. A month ago we took each other as far as we could. But it wasn't enough, was it?” He shakes his head.

“Shane, you handed us a bigger weapon. You handed us a way to end this, brother, and I owe you for that. I don't trust you, but I owe you.

“Dread...”

He lets the silence drag out, and eventually raises the mic back to his lips. “You know, I'm done talking, brother. We'll say everything we've got to say to each other in two weeks.”

--

“All right,” Junior demands. “What the hell have you done?”

Homicide smiles broadly, but doesn't speak. The All Star Team keep moving forward in response.

“What have you done with my father?”

“He's done nothing,” Karen Killer offers, coolly, having acquired a microphone. Homicide snickers.

“I give you my word,” she continues. “If we had something to do with... whatever has happened to your father... then you would know what had happened to your father.

“That is how my man is. But... if I can ask...

“It's the action of a boy to need rescuing by his father. A man can stand alone and proud.

“After all this time my man has spent, trying to make you understand, trying to bring you to full manhood... are you failing so badly?”

--

“Think about what I said, Ricky,” Valentine says. “You think about what you have, and what Sean doesn't.

“Whose fault is that, cowboy? Who really deserves what?

“There's a responsibility that comes with what you did. You have to accept it. It's the only reasonable thing to do.”

--

--
