[Effverse: NRFPT] Herc Ulysses: A Retrospective (Watcher)

Now for Something Completely Different

For years some of you have been coming to this blog to read what I believe is the recipe for making wrestling better. Those who aren't here to read that are here to troll, so nothing I say really matters to them. At any speed, I've decided to add a new feature to the blog, something a bit different than what I usually do.

I'm going to look back at a simpler time. A time when wrestling was still fresh and one of my favorites was helping to lead the way. Thanks to the internet and some file traders, I will chronicle the "legal" wrestling career of one Mr. Herc Ulysses (AKA: Terry Titan).

I will be digging deep into the archives to present you with his entire career, starting with Titan Pro Wrestling in January of 1980, when the ban on professional wrestling was lifted. Each post I do will be a week to a month of the career of Herc, in chronological order.

I'll post reviews, highlights, full matches, and even some promos along the way, so you can see it just like others did way back when.

For those of you unfamiliar with Herc (shame on you, seriously), I'll give you a quick non-spoilery rundown. He was one of the big draws in the underground wrestling scene of the Tri-State area. How some of these events never got busted up by the police, I'll never know. Anyway, when the ban on wrestling was lifted, Herc was quickly acquired by a company I'm sure you're familiar with; Titan Pro Wrestling. You also know that TPW was owned and created by the Titan Media Group with the great granddaughter of Don Loomis running the business side yadda yadda yadda.

The reason why Herc was so impressive and coveted was because he was dynamite on the stick. This guy, while never being the greatest technician or pure wrestling, could charm the habit off a nun. He was big, powerful, and undeniably charismatic; all of which made him the best possible candidate to be a star in the 80s.

That's enough buildup for now though. I'll leave it at this for now, sort of a teaser. But stay tuned as I post everything you wanted to know about the career of Herc "Terry Titan" Ulysses.

This will be a watcher's game where I solely follow the career of Herc Ulysses. I've not run a single day yet, so hopefully he doesn't just up and die in a year or so. Hopefully this will be at least a little entertaining.

Wrestlepes

Retrospective: Not a Bad Way to Start

The first week of Herc's career was pretty eventful, to say the least. But first, let me say that when referring to Herc as it pertains to Titan Pro Wrestling, it will be as Terry Titan.

Titan Pro Wrestling held their first ever episode of Power Hour. Let's set the scene. Monday, week 1 of January 1980. 6,467 fans inside the Evanovich Riverside arena, ready to have pro wrestling in their lives...legally.

Terry Titan would find himself in the Co-Main Event, but not in a singles match. No. He would team with "Mr. New York" himself, AJ Allstot. The two of them would tango with friends of someone Terry would get to know quite a bit, Jay Synn and Bishop Black of New Order of Wrestling. Unfortunately, Terry's TPW career would begin with a loss. But you can't really blame him, it was Allstot who was ultimately pinned. But let's throw a little graphical flavor in your direction to jazz things up a bit.

http://i.imgur.com/NVTIvKi.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/TdaouoZ.jpg VS http://i.imgur.com/noVPLkG.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/xW2UPdd.jpg
New Order of Wrestling def. On Friday, week 1 of January 1980, TPW went on the road to Louisiana Auditorium to put on Super Nova in front of a sold out crowd of 10,000 people. Based solely on the videos I have seen, this crowd was crazy for the show.

It is on this night where Terry Titan would find himself in the Main Event scene. But first, he had an incident with someone else on the roster. One Daniel Bone decided to make himself known to the wrestling superstar. I won't post the whole clip, but I'll give a quick little blurb about it.

Terry was hanging out in the back, limbering up and showing off his shiny oily muscles. Daniel Bone enters the shot, looking at Titan disapprovingly. Bone questions what the big deal with Titan is and and Terry responds by letting him know (spoiler alert!) that he'll show Bone and the world why the people love him when he goes out and defeats Mauler McGregor to be the first TPW World Heavyweight Champion. Needless to say, the crowd goes bonkers.

This leads us to the next match, the big one if you will. Instead of just talking to you about it, thanks to user Rayelek I'll post the match in it's entirety. OK folks, I've heard your feedback. You want more coverage in each post. Fine. This post will finish off January 1980 and then from here on out each post will cover a full month of the career of Mr. Herc Ulysses. Now on with the show.

Ever notice how we look at the past through rose colored glasses? How we often remark that things were "so much better in my day"? Let me put it like this, had I been doing my blog in 1980 I would be tearing into Bradley Boone for some of his booking decisions. You book your biggest star to lose in a tag team match in the Co-Main Event of your first ever television show. You then take him, fresh off a loss, and put him over in the Main Event where he wins your big title. Then what do you follow it up with? Another tag team Co-Main Event. Oh, not just any tag match. An exact rematch of the previous one. I understand that Synn and Black are stablemates of Mauler's and that Mauler and Titan are in a feud (as they should be!), but having Titan lose to Mauler's supposed lessers makes both Mauler and Titan look worse.

So yes, here we are in the Irvine Hall in front of 4,221 people. Earlier in the show we get and nice confrontation between Titan and McGregor. Mauler tells Terry that he got lucky and that next time the title is coming home with him. Titan smiles, plays to the crowd, and informs Mauler that he's ready to defend the belt whenever and wherever. If it wasn't for this promo, this night would be a bust for Titan. From that we go to watching New Order of Wrestling once again take on Terry Titan and AJ Allstot.

http://i.imgur.com/NVTIvKi.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/TdaouoZ.jpg VS http://i.imgur.com/noVPLkG.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/xW2UPdd.jpg

The TPW train doesn't slow down. One week later it is another Power Hour at the Gorski Ballroom. Here things would get back on track for Titan as he would return to singles action, but again he would be relegated to the Co-Main Event. At least this week it was Mauler in the Main Event spot, so it wasn't a major travesty.

This week is where the rivalry between Mauler and Titan really took off. In front of 4,328 fans the two behemoths would get into a brawl that had to be broken up by at least 10 security members. Both men were fuming and the crowd loved every bit of it.

With the brawl over and done with, Titan would find himself in the ring with a new opponent, but still a big one. The masked Brit, Battle Axe, would step into the ring with the TPW World Heavyweight Champion in a non-title match. Big thanks to youtuber Zergon for the following clip.

0-2 in his TPW tag career and 2-0 in his singles career, with a major title win to boot. Maybe, just maybe, Boone learned his lesson as In WK4 of January, Titan was finally in the Main Event of a Power Hour AND it was a singles match. It was also a nice throw back to the incident between Titan and Bone at Super Nova. I probably would have put the title on the line, but what do I know.

Before the Main Event though, Mauler and Titan were again at odds with each other. Things didn't come to violence this week, but the two still shared a heated exchange.

Now back to the Main Event.

All in all, I'd say a pretty fantastic starting month for Terry Titan. If you take away those tag team matches, it would have been even better. That about does it for this post, but check back in next time to see if February 1980 is as good for Terry/Herc as January was.
