Ga Championship Wrestling 1984

Recommended Posts

On July 14, 1984, wrestling fans around the country tuning into WTBS expecting to see Gordon Solie and Ole Anderson host "World Championship Wrestling" were shocked to see instead Vince McMahon stride onto the set and take the microphone from longtime Georgia wrestling sideman Freddie Miller. The World Wrestling Federation had taken over the wresting TV time slots on the Supterstation, the result of gaining majority equity control of the company. The change sent shockwaves through the wrestling industry and deeply disappointed wrestling fans who shared a long standing relationship with the Georgia brand of wrestling.

After gaining control of Georgia Championship Wrestling, the WWF immediately shut down the wrestling operation. Their main interest was the 3 hours of national television time on Superstation WTBS (local Atlanta channel 17), as well as eliminating their competition in the state of Georgia which also gave them Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia markets that Georgia had been running for years. Ole Anderson, who had been in control of Georgia Championship Wrestling, was forced out, but quickly aligned with south Georgia promoters Fred Ward and Ralph Freed (and weeks later maverick promoter Ann Gunkle) to attempt to continue promoting wrestling shows in Georgia and elsewhere. The first thing they needed, though, was TV. Championship Wrestling from Georgia would debut on a few local channels in Ga.,but would not be what it use to be when it was on Saturday nights, instead it was mostly pre taped segments and it seemed that Georgia championship wrestling would soon just be a memories.

The Merger

Jerry Jarrett, who was the owner and promoter of Mid America Championship Wrestling, which ran shows in Tennessee,Alabama,Kentucky, and Mississippi. Jarrett saw an opportunity and made the drive to Atlanta,Ga. to meet with Ole Anderson and Jim Barnett. After three months of complaints from fans outraged since the WWF takeover and the WWF's miserable decline in ratings, Ted Turner frustrated that the WWF take over was a failure went to McMahon and after McMahon seen just how much money he was loosing and figured he would save more money by not running tv tapings in the WTBS studios came to an agreement and sold the time slots back to Turner. Within the next couple of weeks, fans were excited to see that the wrestling they were use to was back on tv and were gonna be seeing new faces on tv as Jerry Jarrett and Ole Anderson along with Jim Barnett have decided to give the wrestling fans a treat and merge the two companies together.

Championship Wrestling from Georgia opens up with Ole Anderson and Gordon Solie welcoming everyone. Gordon tells the fans that there is a lot of changes ahead. Ole agrees and says that Championship Wrestling from Georgia is moving forward in a new direction and says he would like to bring out a man who could explain a little more about it and introduces the fans to Jerry Jarrett.

Jerry thanks Ole and Gordon and lets them know how much of a pleasure it is to be here and to be on WTBS. Jarrett tells everyone that he is happy to announce that Championship Wrestling from Georgia and Mid-America,Mid-Southern Championship Wrestling will be merging and the wrestling fans will now be seeing wrestlers from Mid-America/Mid-Southern Championship Wrestling as well as their favorite wrestlers from Championship Wrestling from Georgia. Jerry then says he has a video of one of the many wrestlers the fans will be seeing soon.

This match never gets started as Dibiase decides he is not gonna wrestle and he is not gonna be putting his title up against a snot nose kid punk like Armstrong. Dibiase who is to busy arguing with Gordon Solie and Ole Anderson, doesn't see Ron Garvin snnek behind him and grab his National title and get in the ring with it. Garvin tells Dibiase if he wants it to come get it. Dibiase who is very angry rush's into the ring only to get hit by Garvin and knocked back out of the ring. After being knocked out of the ring a few times Dibiase pouts like a spoiled brat as Garvin stands smiling in the ring with the National title laying in the ring, as Championship Wrestling from Georgia goes off..
