Washington Huskies vs Buffalo Bulls

Husky Stadium

Washington leads the all time series 1-0 with a victory last season 51-14.

Huskies are 13 point favorites in the game.

Coach Martin is on the Mitch in the Morning show with sidekick Dick Fain hosting as Mitch is out of town.

Fain
- Coach welcome to the morning show I know that you must be looking forward to getting your 2nd season underway.

Coach Martin - Well after a summer filled with hitting each other, the kids are ready to go out hit someone with a different uniform on.

Fain - Coach after a successful 1st season where you guys went 9-4, it seems expectations for the program are not very high. You are predicted to finish last in the Pac-12 North and I know that is not where you want to be.

Coach - No that isn't where we plan to be either. Last year we were picked 5th in the division and 10th overall and we exceeded those expectations and I assume we will do that again.

Fain - Why do you think there are such low expectations this year.

Coach - We lost some real quality players and we had a very small recruiting class. The depth in the program has come under question and I understand that the experts just look at where these kids were ranked coming out of school, but I believe they are overlooking some of our talent. We are very young and yes some of the kids coming into the program are going to get put into the starting unit, particularly on defense.

Fain - Coach what is a fair assessment of the upcoming season? Do you think you can get to another bowl?

Coach - Our goal is to go out and compete and win games. We expect that again we will continue to grow as a team and continue to win games.

Fain - What is the key to beating Buffalo? This is a team that visited Husky stadium last year and you guys handled them easily 51-14. Wasn't the game supposed to be in Buffalo this year?

Coach - Yes the schedule was for a home and away series with Buffalo but they asked to have the game at Husky Stadium and I believe we made a deal with them to do that. Our key will be the same things that made us winners last year, and that was a ball hawking defense that created a lot of turnovers. Setting that up and establishing a solid ground game will be important for us. We have a veteran offensive line and if we can keep them healthy we should be pretty solid up front.

Fain - Good luck coach with the Bulls on Saturday.

The prediction on the Husky roundtable was 35-17 Washington.

Pac-12 Title Game

USC over Oregon 35-31

Pac-12 North

Oregon Ducks (1st) 10-2 7-1 Media 8th Coaches 8th

Ducks are lead by QB Carlos Williams (Jr) who played in 7 games and started 4 last season. Williams completed 64% of his passes for 1252 yards with 9/4 TD/Int ratio. Michael Byrne and James Rivera are the leading WR's on the team that combined for 141 catches 2180 yards

and 18 TD's.

Ducks are inexperienced on the DL in their 4-6 defense. The Ducks starting CB's combined for 21 Int's last season.

Stanford (2nd) 8-3 6-2 17th Media and 16th Coaches

Prediction 2nd in North

The Cardinal run a west coast offense and rely on (Sr) QB David Sanchez. Sanchez passed for 15 TD's last season and had a QB rating of 139.6. The offensive line is a capable unit but the group will have to improve for the Cardinal to truly challenge for the division and conference crowns.

On Defense the Cardinal run a 3-3-5 Defense and star freshman linebacker Shannon Irwin is the key to the strong LB unit.

Cal (3rd) 7-4 5-3

Cal offense runs the Run N Gun Offense and have (Sr) QB Harold Sylvester at the controls. Sylvester played all 12 games but was sacked an incredible 40 times. The OL will have to do a better job protecting him if he is to improve on his 18 TD passes.

The defense runs the 3-3-5 formation and the key to making it work is the DL led by DE Nathaniel Moore. This unit should be able to put a lot of pressure on its opponents QB's but is suspect against the run.

OSU (4th) 7-4 4-4

The Beavers run a West Coast offense and will rely on the running of RB James Schneider. Schneider will run behind a capable offensive line led by C Francis Lindberg. (So) QB Donald Mills will have to improve on his stats from last year where he completed 55% of his passes for 13 TD's and 9 Int's in 10 games started.

The Beavers run a 4-3 defense and rely on DE Craig Hicks. They rely on their DL for both QB pressure and to stuff the run.

WSU (5th) 4-8 1-7

The Cougs run a Run N Gun offense and rely on (Jr) QB Bruce Ellis. Ellis started only 1 game last season and struggled to a rating of 92.1.

The Cougars run a 4-4 defense but the overall group is maybe in for a long season. The DL is looked at to set the tone but the group is up and down but should be able to help cover some of the weakness in the backfield.

Wash (6th) 3-9 0-8

Washington runs a balanced offense and are going to put a heavy load on (Sr) QB Ryan York who beat out fellow (Sr) Charles Samuels for the starting QB job just as he did a year ago. A key for the Huskies will be who will be running the ball behind a fairly solid offensive line.

The Dawgs run a 4-3 defensive alignment and rely on DE George Westmoreland. The linebacking unit is solid and should be able to hold up against many opponents, but the DL besides Westmoreland is extremely young and untested.

South Division

USC (1st) 8-0 12-1 pre-season poll rankings 6th Media 5th Coaches

Prediction 1st Southern Division

The Trojans are loaded this season and hope to improve on their early 1st round exit last season. They run a vertical passing game led by (Sr) QB Craig Brown who completed 65% of his passes last season. The real offensive star is (Sr) RB William Hollingsworth who had 1037 yards last season and 6 TD's but also had some ball security issues with 6 fumbles.

The Trojans run a 3-4 defense have an outstanding secondary that has improved over the last few years and this year's group may breakout if they play smart and consistent. ILB Michael Machado is the star of the defense.

UCLA (2nd) 6-2 9-3 pre-season ranking 25th media and 24th Coaches

Prediction 2nd in South

UCLA hopes to improve on last season's mark but that will be hard to do with USC in the division. The matchup with USC will be for the South division title and the Bruins hope their option offense will be up to the task. The success of that option attack will be the OL that has talent but has lacked consistency.

The Bruins run a 5-2 offensive scheme and have a great DT in Richard McNeal. The D-line will be counted on to put pressure on the opposing QB and will also be looked at to stuff the run. The key might be how the secondary holds up this year.

Arizona (3rd) 6-2 9-2

The Wildcats run a balanced offense on are lead by QB George Johnson. The OL is a capable unit and OG Robert Byrne is a solid player but it will need the whole line to improve to be successful.

The Wildcats will be running a difficult 4-2-5 and rely on a solid secondary to be effective. CB Matthew Huffman is the leader of the group and they are going to have to really overachieve for the Wildcats to be consider contenders for the South title.

Arizona St (4th) 3-5 5-6

The Sun Devils run the Run N Gun offense and have a quality receiving target in TE Michael France. The O-line has some talent but is not very consistent. OT William Boyle is a key to that unit.

The Devils run a 3-4 defense and rely on their strong backfield and CB James Fischer. The DB's are the top unit on the defensive side of the ball but they will be under tremendous pressure to keep them in games.

Utah (5th) 2-6 4-7

The Utes run a west coast offense and have a quality QB (Sr) Larry May. While May struggled some in 11 starts last year throwing 10 TD's and 13 Int's, he has a year of experience. He will be throwing the ball to Luther Turner a 5'9 (Sr) who caught 50 passes last season

The Utes run 4-4 defensive scheme and are led by the LB corps. (Sr) OLB Charles Hayesand (Jr) ILB Willie Whitfield led the charge for the experience Utes. The LB's will have to play well as the DB's are a struggling unit that will have to improve greatly for the Utes to compete.

Colorado (6th) 0-8 2-10

It looks like another long season in Boulder but there might be hope. The Buffaloes run a west coast offense and hope that (Sr) QB Saul Ball can hold the position until redshirt freshman William Johnson comes next year. If Ball can't get the job done, they might take the redshirt off Johnson early.

The Buffaloes run a 3-3-5 defense and have a very solid LB corps. While they are solid they could wear down from abuse over the course of the season. The star on the defense is (Sr) SS Richard Robinson who started 12 games last year and had 91 tackles.

The Huskies came out early and scored often in routing the Buffalo Bulls for the 2nd straight season at Husky Stadium by a score of 41-14. The Huskies were led by Sr. QB Ryan York who once again won the starting job and this year he came out like he wants to keep the job. York was 22-33 413 Yards with 4 TD’s and only 1 Int. York connected on TD Passes in the 1st quarter to James Roberts for 40 yards and then Johnson Albright for 38 as the Dawgs rolled to 17 1st quarter points.

Buffalo had a good chance to get on the board in the 1st quarter but a Baldwin pass was intercepted at the Husky 1 yard line by J. Lee and returned 11 yards. After that York hit Oliver on a 63 yard pass and then settled for a Henry Meador 37 yard FG.

In the 2nd quarter Washington got another Meador FG this time from 41 yards out, and then late in the quarter York hit Oliver again this time for a 36 yard TD. That made it 27-0 Washington at the half.

After the halftime, Buffalo marched 69 yards to get on the board with Stephen Jenkins 22 yard TD run to make it 27-7. The Huskies matched the Bulls with a 76 yard TD drive of their own as York hit Albright again for a 26 yard TD pass to regain the 4 touchdown edge 34-7. A curious call by the Huskies late in the 3rd quarter leading 34-7, the Huskies faked a punt with P Veldez attempting a pass which fell incomplete and gave the Bulls the ball at their own 48 and they marched down the field 52 yards for a score early in the 4th. Washington added a late TD as backup Charles Samuels hit Roberts for a 1 yard TD pass to end the scoring at 41-14.

Washington amassed 579 yards of offense compared to 336 for Buffalo and held on the ball for time of possession of 36:47. While York was the star of the game, freshman RB George Thompson ran 26 times for 133 yards and had a long run of 39 yards.

Coach Martin’s comments after the game
– Always good to get the season going with a win. I thought we played very well on the offensive side of the ball and control the tempo of the game. Ryan York was fabulous and that is the type of performance we have been looking for from him. I think Ryan is ready to break out this season and that bodes well for us. Give Buffalo credit they came out in the 2nd half ready to play and fight and they gave us a good battle. Overall very pleased with the effort and love being 1-0 as it is a lot better than the alternative.

Now we need to get ready and prepare to face a very solid Akron team who won their game today against Rice 36-17. The Zips offer a lot of different looks for us and we will have to be prepared to slow down their offense. They have a lot of big play ability that will test our defense.

Husky game notes –

Ryan’s 413 puts him #6 on the all-time Husky list for yards in a game.

4-star recruit QB Sol Radar attended today’s game. With both top QB’s graduating, Washington is going to be looking for a solid QB in the upcoming recruiting class.

Good news on the injury front following the game, there were no injuries reported by the medical staff.

The Monday after the 1st game of the year against Buffalo, Coach Martin's press conference with the media.....

Coach Martin - Well it was great to get the season going. The guys get tired of going after each other and well the team kind of has a chip on their shoulder. Last year we were told we were not good enough to have a winning season. Not only did we have a winning season, we went to a bowl and won that and ended up with 9 wins. We lose some really good players and again we are picked to be even worse than lasts season, and the team just want to go out compete and prove the experts wrong. Beating Buffalo is a good start to achieving that goal. We came out of the game with no injuries which is huge and we got our offense rolling. Ryan had a fabulous game and that was the Ryan we were looking for all of last season. No one was more disappointed about last season than Ryan York and he worked his butt off all the off season to come in here and claim this job and be prepared to lead this team to another fine season.

Bob Condotta Seattle Times - Coach you mentioned Ryan York and clearly this last week was his best game as a Husky. What were the things he did well Saturday and what does he need to continue to improve on.

Coach Martin - His poise in the pocket was the key. Last year he lacked the confidence he needed and it showed in his pocket presence. Yesterday you saw a young man that looks in control and it showed in his play Saturday. What Ryan needs to work on is to continue to study film and prepare like he did coming into this game. He needs to continue to read through his progressions, this is an area where he struggled last year. Last year he forced a lot of things and while didn't have a lot of INT's his completion percentage was low. He has worked a lot with the offensive coaching staff and OC Kim Keating has tremendous confidence in him, which might not have been the case last season.

Steve Sandmeyer 1090 The Fan - Last year takeaways were a big part of your success, what do you think lead to being such a good ball-hawking defense even if it wasn't the type of defense that could stop teams from a yardage standpoint?

Coach Martin - We work very hard on fundamentals and that includes practicing technique on stripping the ball and also we had several aggressive DB's that went for and covered a lot of INT's for us. That and protecting the ball are huge keys and they will remain keys for us to be a winning program. Ball protection is something we drill into our kids on the offensive side of the ball.

Dave Grosby ESPN 710 Seattle - What challenge come up this week with Akron who many would figure is a bit of a step up in class from Buffalo. What are the things the Zips bring to the table and will be difficult for your team.

Coach Martin - Akron is a very well coached team and they have a very explosive offense after watching film of their week 1 victory. Our guys are going to have to really be careful in not letting big plays happen, keep the ball in front of you. So with that mentality we might give them a few yards, but we won't get burned on big plays. Offensively it will be a test to see if Ryan York can continue what he started and I believe he will.

Todd Dybas Tacoma News Tribune
- coach, you have Akron this week and then another non-league game next week before you start conference play. This season you have Utah and Arizona State in your first two conference games, so you play 5 straight at home to start the season. How important is that to your team.

Coach Martin
- Always nice to have home games, we love to play in front of these fans. The non-conference schedule is set to prepare you for conference play. We will always look to have 3 of our 4 non-conference games at home. But starting conference play with Utah and ASU coming here, well that gives us a great opportunity to start off the conference season with a lot of confidence. Those teams are quality Pac-12 opponents so just because we have them at home doesn't mean they are wins. We are going to have to prepare for those teams and right now we have several weeks to continue to find our identity and then we will prepare to face those teams. My concern will be that going to Corvalis in week 6 will be our first road test, and I hope that bit of scheduling that looks promising doesn't come back to hurt us then.

Dave Mahler SportsRadio KJR 950 - Coach, last year you were unranked all season and then at the end got into the top 25 poll. This year no votes to start off with but then after the win, you are on the verge of the top 25. Would you like to get into the Top 25 earlier this season.

Coach Martin - Aww Softy you know how I feel about polls. The only one that matters is the one at the end of the year. But for the program as we try and continue to rebuild this thing it doesn't hurt if you are being mentioned on all the shows both locally and nationally as a Top 25 team. If we win enough games that recognition will come to us.

Husky game day - week 2 2014 season

Akron Zips 1-0 vs Washington Huskies 1-0

Attendance 48,170

Washington is favored by 9 points

This is the 1st meeting between the 2 schools

Akron (1-1) 0 3 6 3 12

Washington (2-0) 14 7 7 9 37

The Washington Huskies ran their record to 2-0 with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball in beating the Zips 37-12. Ryan York had another great game throwing 12-27 for 4 TD's/1 Int and 360 yards. While the Huskies were concerned about big plays by the Zips offense heading in, it was the Washington offense that hit big play after big play on the strength of the arm of Ryan York. Hitting big pass plays for TD's to TE Warren 46 yards in the 1st and then a 2nd quarter strike to WR Johnson Albright for 68 yards, before capping off the affternoon in the 3rd quarter a 69 yard strike to WR Charles Oliver. Also in the 1st quarter he hit a 3 yard TD Pass to Stephen Montoya.

The Defense confused the Zips all day forcing QB Javier Gunderson into a 12-35 day with no TD's and 1 Int. ILB David Howard had 9 solo tackles and 3 stuffs to go along with a forced fumble and 2 passes defensed. SS Kern picked off a pass to go along with 6 tackle and CB Thompson defensed 3 passes as well.

The only real negative in the game was the 9 penalties for 85 against the Huskies.

First Quarter

WASH TD 12:21 7-0 William Warren 46 YD Pass from Ryan York (Henry Meador Kick).

WASH TD 06:42 14-0 Stephen Montoya 3 YD Pass from Ryan York (Henry Meador Kick).

WASH FG 00:38 37-12 Henry Meador 43 YD

Coach Martin Comments after the Game - Pretty happy about how we played today on both sides of the ball. While we didn't force a bunch of turnovers we held a big play offense to no touchdowns. Ryan York had another fantastic game and I hope everyone can see the progress this young man has made.

Defensively we played much better against a better offensive opponent giving up only 2.7 yards per rush and 4.7 per pass. Holding them to under 300 yards and no TD's is a great accomplishment. I will take FG's over giving up TD's anytime. The offensive line played well as we gained 4 yards per carry and only gave up one sack. The only real concern after the game is the health of our TE William Warren. Last year we lost William to a neck injury for most of the season and while I won't speculate now, the knee injury did not look good. Otherwise we have a few nicks but I don't believe we have anything serious.

The part of the game I didn't care for was the penalties, but we will review those and work on them. But that was too many yards to give up on penalties and it gave them 5 first downs and that is not acceptable.

Husky game notes -

Ryan York didn't get 400 yards this game but he did get 360 with another 4 TD's. With 8 TD passes on the season he is off to a fantastic start with a QB rating of over 210 on the season.

Freshman RB George Thompson just missed starting his Husky career with 2 straight 100 yard games gaining just 95 yards on 16 carries, but not playing much of the 4 quarter.

The Husky Defense held the explosive passing game of Akron to on 12-35 (34% completion %) and only 164 yards. On the season Washington is ranked 24th in defense overall 34 Pass 38 Run.

The defense in a bit of a different twist from last season is getting off the field on 3rd down ranked 27th nationally at 25% (9-36).

It was reported that FS recruit Conrad Gonzalez was in attendance for the game. Gonzalez is a 4 star rated player and rates as #37 best player in the west.

Injury report after the game -

From: Training staff

TE Jose Stevenson is recovering from an injury to his Groin (Pulled). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

TE William Warren is out a couple months with his Patella (Torn Tendon). We will do what we can to get him back into action as soon as possible, but we can't make any promises at this point.

OT John Cook is recovering from an injury to his Heel/Achilles (Strain). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

CB Joseph Sanchez is trying to play through an injury to his Toe (Torn Ligament). He seems willing to give it a go, but we would recommend giving him another week to recover.

Husky press conference following Akron game

Coach Martin (looking a little down) I am going to open today's press conference with a little sad news. TE William Warren will be lost 8-10 weeks with a torn patella in his right knee. This young man fought back so much so that he could play in our bowl game last year, and now to see another major injury for him is just heartbreaking. William is just a sophomore so he will have several years, but you just hate to see it happen to such a great young man.

While we are talking injuries we also will probably sit Fr CB Joseph Sanchez who has been our nickel back so far this year. He is battling a pretty severe case of turf toe and he is questionable this week, but I think we will try and get him some rest to be ready for Utah.

Todd Dybas Tacoma News Tribune - Coach obviously you mentioned the devastating injury to your starting TE William Warren but there is also another TE on the injury list. With only 3 active players on the roster at TE, will you have to take the redshirt off freshman TE Gary Jenkins?

Coach Martin - We are still discussing that and it is certainly an option. As you mentioned our backup TE Jose Stevenson is also battling a groin injury. He is likely probable so the debate right now is can he go this Saturday. We have Sr TE Walter Vazquez taking snaps with the 1st team offense. We also have backup FB James Rutherford going over the plays and he might be listed as 3rd on the depth chart at TE.

Bob Condotta Seattle Times - Coach, Alabama Birmingham comes in this week and they have really struggled offensively this season. They have not scored a TD yet, do you believe this is a game where your team might let down.

Coach Martin
- We are approaching this game like any other. I don't think the kids are taking UAB lightly as they know that we are not that kind of team to take anyone lightly. What I hope is that we can get a lot of kids some work in this game. We want to keep working on the things that have made us successful and get those things ready for conference play. Again that is what the non-conference schedule is for, preparing your team for conference play.

Hugh Millen SportsRadio KJR 950 - Coach this season has seen a remarkable turnaround in QB Ryan York. What do you think is attributing to that success this season?

Coach Martin - Hugh you know this kid, you have worked with him as well at some camps you have run over the years when he was in high school. Ryan has the tools to be great, but last year with the coaching change and honestly he was not on the same page as our former OC and it effected him. Ryan's confidence was shaken last year and he just could not get it going. He started 8 games and played in all 13, but we did play Charles Samuels a lot last season and Ryan never got in rhythm. Our primarily goal was to win games so we did what we felt we had to, to win games. This year with our new OC Kim Keating and a lot of off-season work with the receivers, Ryan has grown by leaps and bounds and has confidence and he is preforming like we knew he can.

Rich Myhre Everett Herald - Coach, your defense has really turned around the performance so far this season, is that a factor of the competition or are these changes for real?

Coach Martin - DC Johnson has done a great job bringing the defense together. Last year again we had a different DC who while a very good coach had a bit of a different philosophy and we felt that it would be best for us to bring someone in who shared the same philosophy. We have some very good, young players who have played well together so far, but it is only 2 games. I like what I see and I have every reason to believe that from a gameplan and coaching standpoint we will be better than we were last year. We have the talent and it is up to us coaches to put the players in the best position to win and I think we are doing that. As long as we don't have too many injuries on the defensive side of the football I believe we are going to be very sound and improved over last season.

Washington (3-0) 17 13 7 17 54

Washington overmatched UAB all afternoon in routing the Blazers at Husky Stadium on Saturday. The receiving combo of Johnson Albright (152) and James Roberts (151) combined for 303 yards and 3 TD's as the Huskies built up a 30-0 halftime lead against the visitors.

Washington made a lot of substitutions in the 2nd half of the game and it got a little sloppy, but the Dawgs held the Blazers out of the endzone for 59 minutes (179 minutes on the season for the Blazers) until backup QB Zachary Rhodes hit his only pass of the game a 79 yarder to Donald Spencer with 56 seconds remaining.

Freshman RB George Thompson scored his 1st TD as a Husky and went over 100 yards with 108 before taking a seat in the 2nd half. The Freshman has run for over 300 yards and has a 5.2 yards per carry on the season.

UAB TD 00:56 54-16 Donald Spencer 79 YD Pass from Zachary Rhodes (Chris Rogers Kick).

Coach Martin's comments after the game - I think we are ready for conference play. Great 1st half by the kids in building that 30-0 lead and while I was pleased that we didn't come out flat for this game, we did for a bit after halftime. Still we kept them out of the endzone until a breakdown with less than a minute. We had a lot of 2nd and 3rd string guys out there getting some work and experience and we will chalk that up as a learning experience.

We had a couple of injuries this week with our ILB David Howard (neck) and OG John Richardson (quad). We hope they will be ready to go next week but we will see what we have at the end of the week.

We are where we wanted to be at this point 3-0 and playing pretty well before Utah comes to town. The Utes will be a major test for us and we are glad we have this game at home.

Husky game notes -

The Huskies hosted 4-star SS recruit Manuel Torres who is the 25th best SS and 50th best player in the West.

Husky Defense had 4 interceptions of UAB QB's and also forced and recovered a fumble.

Huskies are +4 in turnover margin this season.

Ryan York threw 2 more TD passes to move his total to 10 this season. He also threw 1 Int for the 3rd straight game as well.

Washington outgained UAB 503 to 332 (253 without the last play).

Huskies did take the red-shirt off Fr TE Gary Jenkins

TE William Warren is out a couple months with his Patella (Torn Tendon). We will do what we

can to get him back into action as soon as possible, but we can't make any promises at this point.

OG John Richardson is struggling with an injury to his Quadriceps (Strained). He is able to play this weekend, but I don't think he would be anywhere close to 100%. The smart move would be to let him sit and check again next week.

ILB David Howard is really hampered by an injury to his Neck (Spinal Compression). He could play as an absolute last resort, but we would strongly advise against it.

CB Joseph Sanchez is trying to play through an injury to his Toe (Torn Ligament). He seems willing to give it a go, but we would recommend giving him another week to recover.

Coach Martin on KJR afternoon drive Husky Honks Show

Huskies Honks show with Dave "Softy" Mahler, Hugh Millen and Dick Baird

Softy - Welcome back to the Honks baby and now joining us is Head Coach DD Martin of the unbeaten 3-0 Washington Huskies. Coach welcome to the show and congrats on the start of the season. Seems like we are in a familar position last year.

Coach Martin - Softy thanks for having me and thanks guys for the support for the program. I know all of you guys love this program and we appreciate all of the attention, both positive and negative. The more attention to the program the better.

Softy - Well Coach the feedback has been positive as you are now in your 2nd season and are 12-4 overall as head coach.

Coach Martin - Well that is all well and good, but I know what this program means to the fans here and the record they are interested in is probably the 4-4 record last year in the conference. We are working very hard to improve this team so that we are competing year after year for the conference crown. Until we get there, all the other stuff probably doesn't matter.

Dick Baird - Don't be too hard on yourself. The fans know what you took over and the work that has gone into that 12-4 record. You took this team to a bowl game and won it last year and now you have a team that is still probably a couple of recruiting classes away from having the talent it will need to compete with the USC's or Oregon's in the conference.

Coach Martin - Coach Baird I appreciate the confidence. We are working hard to ensure that we can have that sort of recruiting success. Our class last year wasn't rate very high because we only had 7 scholarships to offer, but with the 2 transfer we picked up and the 7 kids we brought in, we are very pleased with the quality of the class. I think the quality is a lot higher than the experts rated it.

Softy - Ok lets get down to the upcoming game. Last year we were 3-0 and went to Stanford and fought a very good game against the powerful Cardinal and lost by a touchdown. This year I think we are better, the opponent is not nationally ranked and we are at home. What a statement would it make to get this victory over a very tough Utah team who is coming in here with the same goals to compete for their division crown as well.

Coach Martin - We always want to protect our house. Right now we are 8-2 at Husky Stadium but only 2-2 in Pac-12 play. We very much want to take care of business but Utah is a very good team and they have one of the top defenses in the country. Utah does a lot of things on defense and mixes their coverages well. It is going to be a very tough matchup for us, but one I think we can prevail in.

Hugh Millen - Coach you know that I think the world of Ryan York and the work he has done. Your coaching staff has provided the coaching and leadership to help him find his place here this year and he is preforming very well with over a 210 QB rating. With him and your young freshman RB George Thompson, we have a pretty good 1-2 combo of passing and running game.

Coach Martin - Well we like to be balanced and we have had George Thompson set up as a freshman to take over for our offensive MVP last year Carl Kelly. If Thompson wasn't doing what he is doing for us, then Ryan wouldn't be as successful as he has been. They go hand and hand together for us in this offense. Ryan has done a tremendous job and we feel that he will continue. We have some great receivers that have really stepped up this year in Johnson Albright, James Roberts and Charlie Oliver. I wish we still had our starting TE William Warren. He really helps us both receiving and also is a very good presence on the line and opens up holes for our running backs.

Softy - Coach we have talked much about the defense and it really has been much improved over last season. What do you attribute that turnaround too?

Coach Martin - The players, they have worked very hard to train, learn, and trust in each other. I believe the trust factor is huge for our improvement and these kids trust each other and the coaching staff. DC Chris Johnson has done a great job in improving the offense and we have more of a team scheme this year.

Dick Baird - You are still getting turnovers as well.

Coach Martin - well we are a little behind our pace of last year but I think that we will continue to be fine in that area. We have some great players and because the defense wasn't as organized as it is this year we had some great individual freelancing that created some turnovers but also gave up some big plays. I think we are more balanced this year, but we focus on the turnovers and I think they will continue to come.

Softy
- Any final thoughts for Saturday against Utah?

Coach Martin - Let's go get em and bring home a victory for the purple and gold. Go Dawgs!

Washington 22 Utah 7

Husky Stadium - Seattle, Washington

62 Degrees slightly overcast skies

Attendance 49,477

Utah (2-1) 7 0 0 0 7

Washington (4-0) 0 7 6 9 22

Ryan York was POG 15-25 228 2-1

First Quarter

UTAH TD 06:21 7-0 Robert Dalton 42 YD Pass from Larry May (Dean Rodriguez Kick).

Second Quarter

WASH TD 02:29 7-7 James Roberts 2 YD Pass from Ryan York (Henry Meador Kick).

Third Quarter

WASH TD 09:13 13-7 Johnson Albright 38 YD Pass from Ryan York (Henry Meador Kick Failed).

Fourth Quarter

WASH TD 01:42 19-7 13 YD Int Return by Johnathan Couch (2 Pts Failed)

WASH FG 00:00 22-7 Henry Meador 52 YD

The Huskies gave up an early touchdown on a big play by Utah QB Larry May hitting Robert Dalton for 42 yards, but that was all the Husky D gave up the entire game. Utah only got inside the Husky 20 yard line once and came up empty while the offense rolled up 440 yards of total offense. Washington got the equalizing TD in the 2nd quarter to tie it up 7-7 at the half.

In the 2nd half took the lead for good on a York to Johnson Albright 38 yard score and then added an interception return for the touchdown of 13 yards by Johnathan Couch before Henry Meador hit a career best 52 yard FG as time expired and Washington won a huge home game over Utah 22-7.

Coach Martin comments after the game - (big smile) That one felt good. This was a huge win for this football team and program to go out there and protect the home turf and win a big conference game. Let me tell you that Utah team is a very good football team. They came out put us in a hole early 7-0 on a big TD pass and then we shut them down. We might have given up 350+ yards but we got 2 turnovers and we kept them out of the red zone tonight. They were 0-1 (missed FG) in the red zone. On the other side that was the #10 ranked defense in the country and we moved the ball over 440 yards and again it was a solid combination of running and passing.

We were happy to be tied 7-7 at the half because we knew that we hadn't played our best yet. We fixed some mistakes and Johnson Albright caught that 38 yard TD and then we had the lead. The defense shut them down and then Johnathan Couch put the nail in it for us with an interception return for TD. Then Henry hit that career long 52 yarder. We are very pleased to be 4-0 and now we get to do it again and have Arizona State come in here. They had a bye this week so they should still be ranked so it will be an opportunity for us to come out and play at home against a ranked opponent. We are looking forward to it.

This was a very hard hitting game and we had some injuries this week and we will get the medical on everyone tomorrow. I am very concerned about the number of walking wounded we have right now.

Everyone is talking Husky football right now with the recent ranking and big matchup again at home against #23 Arizona State. On the radio, newsprint, columnists, bloggers and even on the Pac-12 Network, they are all talking about the rejuvenated Husky program. If the Huskies are somehow able to win this game and go to 5-0 on the season, it would put them really on pace to have a shot when the big boys of the north, Oregon and Stanford come calling.

Coach Martin on the ranking - It is truly an honor to be thought of when people put together these polls. It was a great feeling to be ranked at the end of last season and now with us getting their after 4 games, it shows that this program is going in the right direction. But conference championships, bowl games and playoff berths are not won in early October so we have a lot of work to do. If we get too happy, this Sun Devil team coming to Husky Stadium this weekend will punch us in the mouth and remind us what it takes to be a good quality program. Do not take the Sun Devils lightly, they are ranked right in front of us and have had 2 very solid games and are one of the best teams in the conference. It is going to take everything that we have to once again protect the home turf here at Husky Stadium and we need the fans and everyone to rally around these guys. They are playing their hearts out and showing everyone what happens when you work hard and believe. GO DAWGS!

The Washington Huskies came out today for a fight with Arizona State Sun Devils and in the first 30 minutes that is exactly what they got. While the scoreboard read Washington 9 ASU 7 at the half, the Sun Devils had a ton of momentum and got the ball first to start the 3rd quarter. But Washington came out fired up in the 2nd half and stuffed that 1st drive to 3 plays and out and then systematically beat the Sun Devils and beat them convincing winning going away 41-7. The final score was defintely a surprise as these two teams were ranked coming into this game 23rd and 24th nationally but that will change.

In the 2nd half Ryan York turned in a masterful performance with 3 TD passes and George Thompson ran for 162 yards. The Husky defense was stout all day holding ASU's high power offense to 277 yards in their best overall performance against a quality oppenent in Coach Martin's 1 1/2 seasons as head coach. The defense also forced 4 turnovers in the game.

Coach Martin's comments after the game - Where do we start today? I think the defense played one hell of a game. Holding that team like we did and turning that ball over, just outstanding. George Westmoreland had fantastic day forcing a fumble and recovering 2 fumbles. He was all over the field for us. And what can I say about Ryan York. Yes the completion percentage is not what we would have wanted but he made them count and hit 3 big 2nd half TD passes. But my star of the game is George Thompson. He set the tone for us and hit the holes hard. 162 yards rushing on 26 carries for a freshman is truly outstanding work against a quality team like the Sun Devils.

(question from the group of reporters about Oregon State's pasting of WSU). Oregon State is a very tough team and today they took it to Washington State. We are going to have a hands full next Saturday and it will be our 1st road game of the season so I am very interested to see how we play away from Husky Stadium. The Beavers are going to present a great challenge for us, but so did the Sun Devils and we came out of it ok, so we are going to prepare hard and get ready to play them in Corvalis.

Subject: Weekly injury report

TE Walter Vazquez is really hampered by an injury to his Ribs (Broken). He could play as an absolute last resort, but we would strongly advise against it.

TE William Warren is out for at least a month with his Patella (Torn Tendon). You need to look at other options while we continue his rehab.

OG John Richardson is recovering from an injury to his Quadriceps (Strained). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

ILB David Howard is struggling with an injury to his Neck (Spinal Compression). He is able to play this weekend, but I don't think he would be anywhere close to 100%. The smart move would be to let him sit and check again next week.

CB Jamie Lee is recovering from an injury to his Elbow (Inflammation). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

SS Jesse Cooper is recovering from an injury to his Foot (Fracture). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

Oregon State came out fast in this Pac-12 Northern division battle scoring the first 17 points of the game to lead 17-0 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter. But Washington did not wilt and responded with 17 points in the last 5:44 of the 2nd quarter to tie the game at halftime and then kicked a couple of FG's in the 2nd half to upset Oregon State (1-2, 3-3) in Corvalis 23-17.

It didn't look to be Washington's (3-0, 6-0) day from the beginning as prior to the opening kick running onto the field FB James Rutherford tripped and fell and bloodied his nose, but fortunately for him he didn't break it and was able to return. After that start Oregon State took the ball and marched 8 plays and 82 yards with the last 42 coming on a Mills to Watson 42 yard pass. That pair would team up again in the 2nd quarter on a 30 yard TD pass to make it 17-0 Beavers. At that point, the Huskies playing their 1st game on the road and not looking to sharp huddled with the coaches on the sideline and came back out. At this point the scoreboard read OSU 17 and Washington 0 and the Beavers had out gained the Huskies 234-29 in yardage. After another 3 and out, the Husky defense created it first turnover of the game on a fumble and took over at the 31 yard line of the Beavers and took it 7 plays and 31 yards ending on a Rutherford 2 yard plunge.

Right after gaining the ball back Washington QB Ryan York hit Johnson Albright on a 46 yard pass to the OSU 5 yard line and Thompson took it in 3 plays later on a 4 yard TD run to make it 17-14 OSU. Washington's defense didn't let the Beavers get a first down after that TD and got the ball back after the punt at their own 34 yard line. After a 2nd and 10 play gained 3 yards the Dawgs would have been looking at 3rd and 7 but OSU DT Nathan Walker was flagged for a roughing the passer personal foul and that gave Washington a 1st down at the OSU 48 yard line with 29 seconds. On 3rd and 3 from the OSU 41 York hit James Roberts on a 20 yard corner route and after a quick time out with 8 seconds, Washington kicker Henry Meador nailed a 39 yard FG to tie the game at the half 17-17.

The 2nd half saw both defenses take over, but Washington managed 2 more Meador FG's of 32 and 29 yards and that was the game. In the last 40 minutes of the game Washington held OSU to 124 yards and 0 points.

Coach Martin comments after the game - 6-0 feels really good and to get a tough victory on the road against that defense is quite an accomplishment. This puts us in position to control our own destiny now after the bye week. We have both Stanford and Oregon coming to our house and those games might very well decide the Pac-12 north. With Oregon losing to USC today the division is wide open.

George Thompson ran that ball hard today with 31 carries and that defense held him to 3 yards a carry. I can't say enough about these kids after falling behind 17-0 to come back and shut them down the way we did and then do just enough offensively to prevail. These guys deserve this week off and we will rest up and get ready for Army in 2 weeks. The schedule is tough with 4 road games (Army, Cal, Arizona and then WSU) sandwiched around home games with Stanford in week 9 and Oregon in week 12.

Coach Martin on with Mitch in the Morning on Sports Radio 950 KJR

Mitch
- Coach what can I say about the start of this season for your team? I mean 6-0 is beyond all our wildest dreams especially with where the PAC-12 media place your team this season.

Coach Martin - Mitch everyone has worked extremely hard to get us to this point in the season. From the players, coaches, trainers, medical staff and academic support staff this has been a group effort. The expectations were extremely low going into the season even by the University but we have kind of rallied around that. A lot of these players have taken what was said prior to the start of the season and used that as motivation.

Mitch
- Why do you think expectations for this season were so low?

Coach - Well in my mind they were not low nor the coaches minds either. We didn't let these kids believe in all the negative talk. We sent a very strong message during the off season that we were going to work harder than you ever thought you could. If anyone didn't want that then they could leave the program with no hard feelings. But to answer your question there has been a lot of people who didn't believe we he talented kids here because of there status as recruits prior to coming here. That and the talent we lost through graduation and we only had 7 scholarships to give plus the 2 transfers. It added up in a lot of people's minds that it was going to take 4 recruiting classes or more to turn things around.

Mitch - Well turned them around you have. Unbeaten this year and 15-4 since coming to the school. Not a bad start considering where things were previously. And the bowl victory over Texas Tech is looking pretty good as they are now 5-0 this season. I want to ask you about the coaching changes you made this off-season. After being 9-4 last year it surprised some that you would make those changes. Was it all about bringing in your guys?

Coach - Remember the circumstances of my arrival last year. Basically after recruiting was over taking over so I was brought in and the rest of the staff was in place. Not the easiest of situations but it was what it was. My reason for making the changes was mainly due to philosophy. The previous coordinators ere very good but we were not on the same page in regards to scheme and training. That really was the reason and so I went out and found the best 2 coordinators I could that ran the type of schemes that I wanted. I am a 4-3 defensive minded coach. I like having big run stuffing D-linemen and active linebackers. On the other side while I like passing the ball I am not a run and shoot sort of a coach. We are going to run the ball and run it effectively to compliment the passing game. I need to find a coordinator who believed the same way.

Mitch - And they are both excellent teachers at developing players to their full potential?

Coach - Without a doubt they are 2 of the best at that and it shows in our

development this year. Look at Ryan York. Last season he was struggling and playing with a lack go confidence, and now this year look at him. He is having a great season. Coach Keating got with him early and told both QB's that they would have an open competition and the winner would be the clear starter. Both seniors bought into this and even though they both want to start they have a great relationship and Charles Samuels has been very supportive. He is also staying ready but he is there to talk with Ryan during the game as well sharing what he sees.

Mitch - You have a bye this week what are the players doing?

Coach - staying in condition but also resting up some injuries. This is a tough game and getting some time to recover here is perfect for us. We will gather the team later in the week and start reviewing Army, who is playing well by the way, and prepare for that game.

Mitch - With 4 of the last 6 on the road and the 2 home games are Stanford and Oregon the schedule gets very tough.

Coach - This is the PAC-12 the schedule in conference is always tough. Right now we are in the driver's seat in the North and that is a pretty good place to be. We will go out and compete like we always do and look forward to playing those teams. If we win enough of them then we will get a shot at the conference crown. At this point of the season I can't ask for anymore than that.

Mitch - enjoy the bye week Coach and good luck the rest of the way.

Coach - Thanks for having me on Mitch and GO DAWGS!

Washington Huskies 6-0 vs Army Black Knights 3-4

Washington leads the all-time series 2-0 with the last game played in 1995 with the Huskies winning 21-13 in Seattle.

Washington is favored by 11 points Saturday

Washington has climbed to 13th in both the Media and Coaches polls.

Chris Polk is Washington's all-time freshman rusher leader with 1113 yards in the 2009 season. Current pace by freshman running back George Thompson with 721 yards through 6 games has him on pace for 1442 through the regular season. So he is likely barring injury or huge drop off to break that record. The question is will he start next season with highly regarded transfer Clarence Thomas waiting in the wings.

Keith Price holds the school record for passer rating with a 161.9 in 2011. Currently Ryan York has a rating of 182.2

Team Matchups -

Washington Key - Johnson Albright has caught 35 of 58 passes thrown his way for 772 yards and 6 TD and is averaging 22.1 yards per a catch so he is a big play threat.

Amry Key - The Black Knights defense is ranked 20th overall in the country and is only giving up 188.9 yards per a game passing 10th against the pass.

WR Stephen Montoya is recovering from an injury to his Knee (Subluxation). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

TE Walter Vazquez is saddled with an injury to his Ribs (Broken). His performance would certainly suffer if you played him so we recommend letting have a little more time to get back closer to 100%.

TE William Warren is really hampered by an injury to his Patella (Torn Tendon). He could play as an absolute last resort, but we would strongly advise against it.

#13 Washington 21 Army 6

Weather 54 degrees and overcast (night game)

Attendance 25,166

Washington (7-0) 7 7 0 7 21

Army (3-5) 0 3 3 0 6

First Quarter

WASH TD 07:07 7-0 Gregory Johnson 4 YD Pass from Ryan York (Henry Meador Kick).

Second Quarter

WASH TD 13:12 14-0 George Thompson 4 YD Run (Henry Meador Kick).

ARMY FG 07:35 14-3 Anthony Lewis 26 YD

Third Quarter

ARMY FG 04:36 14-6 Anthony Lewis 48 YD

Fourth Quarter

WASH TD 14:11 21-6 32 YD Fumble Return by Robert Langford (Henry Meador Kick).

Westpoint - For 13th ranked Washington it was not easy, but they did prevail 21-6 over Army. Washington raced out to a 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter and it looked like the rout was on, but the Black Knights managed to dodge the bulllets to keep the game close. Washington scored late on a Robert Langford 32 yard fumble return for touchdown to score the final points in the 4th quarter.

The Husky defense really held the Cadets in check through the entire game only giving up 189 yards of total offense (only 72 in the air). The Husky defense also forced 2 turnovers and score a tD.

Washington was fortunate that the kicking game didn't bring them down in this one. The usually reliable Henry Meador missed all 3 field goals attempted coming from 45, 48, and 41 yards. Meador is 16-21 now on the season and 5-9 from over 40 yards.

Coach Martin's comments - Really proud of the defense today. Army has struggled on offense some this year and we really didn't let them get anything going against us.

George Thompson had a fantastic game for us rushing for 155 yards on 28 carries. Really stabilized the offense for us. We did waste some opportunities today with the interception down at the goal line and the 3 missed field goals. Henry is usually very accurate but today, with a little bit of a wind and the footing on the field, he just for whatever reason was uncomfortable today. We will work with him to make sure this one game

doesn't shake his confidence to much as we are going to need him down the stretch.

We wanted to get Harry O'Brien a few snaps today in the game. He made a mistake down at the goal line when he got hurried, but it is correctable. Better today than maybe at the start of next season. We will look to try and get him in some other games this year if we can. Charles is still our main backup QB but again our goal was to get Harry some playing

time today. He is our leading candidate right now for starting QB next fall.

A crowd of 59,391 fans braved the downpour to come to Husky Stadium for the Pac-12 North battle between Washington and Stanford. They were treated to a hard hitting slugfest that saw Stanford pull out a 4th quarter comeback with 10 late points to pull off a 24-16 victory.

Stanford running back John Metcalf lead a determined Cardinal ground game with 35 carries for 99 yards and 2 TD's, but Washington held the Cardinal to just 2.7 yards per carry while Washington averaged 5.1 yards per carry. But it was the Cardinal abilty to convert on 3rd downs 12-22 that kept drives alive and kept the Husky offense on the sidelines during the 2nd half.

Coach Martin comments after the game - Very tough, physical hard hitting game today with Stanford. We are pleased with the effort of the team but clearly would have preferred a different result. No issues with the weather, this is Seattle and we have to be ready to play and we were, Stanford just played a little better and while we didn't give them much on the ground, they were able to really grind it out and convert their 3rd downs to keep us off the field. You have to give it to Stanford for being able to execute their game plan. So we have to move forward and prepare for our next game and take the things we learned from this game and improve. Cal is a good team and we will need to be prepared for that game down in Berkeley next week.

USA Today Sports

Longtime University of Washington football coach Don James, who led the Huskies to a share of the national title in 1991, died Sunday at his home in Kirkland, Wash. He was 80.

The school said in a news release that details of a memorial service will come later.

James coached Washington from 1975-1992, collecting six conference titles.

The peak came in the 1991 season as the Huskies went 12-0, beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl. The team was voted national champion in the coaches poll. Miami (Fla.) topped the Associated Press news media poll.

The school had announced last month that James was beginning treatment for pancreatic cancer.

He attended his last game Aug. 31 at the reopening of a renovated Husky Stadium.

James was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

He resigned as coach at Washington on Aug. 22, 1993, in protest of sanctions handed down just hours before by the then-Pac-10 against the program for numerous NCAA rules violations.

Among the violations were improper loans to players, free meals for recruits and improper employment of players by boosters.

James was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Massillon, Ohio, and played quarterback at Miami (Fla.), earning a degree in education in 1954. He went on to earn a master's degree in education from Kansas while also serving as a graduate assistant there.

After stints as an assistant at Florida State, Michigan and Colorado, James was named head coach at Kent State in 1971. He was 25-19-1 in four seasons with the Golden Flashes, taking them to their first major college bowl game in 1972.

Players on that team included safety Nick Saban, now head coach at Alabama, and tight end Gary Pinkel, now head coach at Missouri. Saban later served as a graduate assistant on James' staff.

The Golden Flashes didn't get to another bowl game until last season.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Carol; three children, Jeff, Jill and Jeni; and 10 grandchildren.

Reaction from Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach James' family. He was a special man and meant the world to me. There aren't enough words to describe not only the great coach he was, but how much he cared for people and the positive impact he made in the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

Coach James was my mentor and probably did more than anybody to influence me in this profession. Like I've said before, I didn't plan on going into coaching. He saw something in me and asked me to stay on at Kent State as a graduate assistant after my playing career was over. I really enjoyed it, got hired full time and went on from there.

From an organizational standpoint, our program today is run much like he ran his program. He was very organized, efficient, and did an outstanding job of defining expectations for players, coaches and everyone in the organization.

He was always personal and inspirational to players and people around him. He wanted you to reach your full potential as a football player, but more importantly, he wanted you to do well in school and become the best person you could be so you would be successful in life. He was the same way when it came to assistant coaches or anyone who worked for him, you were a better person because of the time you spent with Coach James.

ooc: I don't normally bring in real world news items into something like this but being a huge Washington fan and growing up with Coach James his passing has hit me hard. Seems like a lot of the local legends in this area from when I was growing up have passed away this year. Earlier this year former Husky basketball coach Marv Harshmann passed away along with another local football coaching legend in these parts Frosty Westering from PLU. In the coming days Coach Martin will probably have some comments regarding Coach James prior to the Husky game against Cal.

Mitch in the Morning on with current Husky coach DD Martin

Mitch - Coach clearly this is a tough day for you and the program and Husky nation.

Coach Martin - Mitch, I don't know how well you knew Don James but he was truly a mentor to me and an inspiration. Many of the ideals that I hold to in my program are modeled after Coach James. His attention to detail and his meticulous planning are all things that I have tried to carry on. This program that we are trying to return to the model of consistency and toughness of those Coach James teams is what we are trying to do.

Mitch - The service is in a few days and in the mean time you have to prepare your team to play Cal on Saturday.

Coach Martin - Yes that is the way Coach James would want it. He wanted nothing more than the Purple and Gold to go out and win football games. He was a part of this team each year that I have been here with his messages in August of each year. Coach wouldn't want this team to not be prepared to play and I can think of no better way to honor him than for this team to go out and put up a huge victory on Saturday.

Mitch - Lets talk about the Stanford game just a bit. It was your 1st loss of the season and I know that had to hurt. You guys had the lead in the 4th quarter and something that hadn't happened to you ever as Husky Coach, you lost a game you lead in the 4th quarter.

Coach Martin - Stanford played simply put a good hard nosed football game. It really was a game reminiscent of Husky teams in the past with great defense and a stout and steady running game. They moved the ball just enough and while some of the 1st downs came by inches, they were successful more times than not. In that 4th quarter with them trailing they were able to literally hang onto that football and keep us off the field. So now we have tasted defeat for the 1st time and we need to get right back up and move forward because while Cal might only be 4-4 but they are a very good football team. And I mean that, this just isn't coach speak for trying to build up an opponent. The Golden Bears are for real and if they play with proper game management and ball security, they are going to be one tough team to beat.

Mitch - How do you go about beating Cal then?

Coach Martin - You saw the blue print of that this weekend by Stanford. That is the way you beat Cal. You keep them off the field with a running game and don't let your defense be out there too long to give up a big play. If you can contain them then maybe you catch a break and force a turnover. But we must stay within the game plan and that game plan is to bring a real physical presence to the field on Saturday.

Mitch - Your 7-1 and still in firm control of your destiny. Looking ahead....

Coach Martin - Mitch there is not looking ahead. There is a old saying that the games played in November are the ones everyone remembers.....We want to make sure we start here with this 1st game in November and make it truly the beginning of a month to remember. I am not looking ahead to Oregon or any other game. There is no more important game than the one right in front of us and if we are too busy looking ahead, we will get our tails whipped.

Mitch - Any last thoughts Coach?

Coach Martin - On Sunday Husky Nation and college football as a whole will pay their respects to Coach James. For this team, we start on Saturday night to pay our respects. And we are going to make it a game to remember. GO DAWGS!

- The Huskies return this weekend for the start of their last 4 games and a push towards a 2nd straight bowl game and who knows maybe even more. Actually I am looking forward to the recruiting season coming up as this year we have a lot of scholarships to fill and we need to have a very solid recruiting class as we move towards year 3 of the return to glory.

OOC: I am anxious to get to the recruiting phase and I have fallen behind a bit with work stuff so my time has been limited. I am going to post the last 4 games of the season, then the polls/standings. Going into these final 4 games Washington is 7-1 having just lost their 1st game of the year against Stanford.

The Huskies never really got untracked versus Cal falling behind 20-3. The Dawgs scored a couple of late 4th quarter touchdowns to make it close, but it was clear this team was still in shock after all that has happened to the program in the last week.

Coach Martin's Comments - Not much to say. Cal came out here today clearly the more ready to play and they kicked our butts all over that field in all phases of the game. We need to be better than that and this is the most disappointed I have ever been in the team in my almost 2 years. What we need to do is to go back and fix it, all phases period (walks off).
