Storms On The Horizon: WWF 1991 Diary

Awesome show my friend, wasn't expecting to see Vader, how did you steal him from WCW? (I don't remember if he starts employed by it) Warrior vs. Savage should be awesome. And my boy Martel was awesome in the Rumble, give him a singles title run please :D Great stuff.

<p>Great pick for the winner! I also loved Vader's involvement, and the Undertaker's impact. Great job. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Weird that I predicted the least correct. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<p>I loved that Rumble. Savage/Warrior headlines, as it should have. Even as a kid who was a huge Hogan fan, I was more interested in Savage vs. Warrior than I was Hogan vs. Slaughter. I don't think I really bought Slaughter as a threat.</p><p> </p><p>

Vader made a big splash in his debut; I'll be really interested to see what you've got for him at Mania.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm surprised you were able to get an A rated Rumble match; I felt like my Rumble was about as star-studded as possible, and it still only managed a B+.</p>

I don't want to feed him true main eventers(as in guys I have plans for) right away, because I don't want to stall his career like what happened to Sheamus when Vince pushed him way too fast back in 2009. If Vader goes through Hogan, Savage, Warrior, etc. now, then who will be left for him to face?</p><p> </p><p> And I was surprised I got an A grade for the Rumble as well. I do seem to recall someone(can't remember who) saying that the best way to get a really good grade for a battle royal or Royal Rumble was to have a lot of guys with very good psychology. With the likes of Mr. Perfect, Rick Martel, Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, etc., I seemed to have hit that mark, even with having to script the match. I think it helped I had Pat Patterson putting the match together as the road agent because of his psychology.</p>

They talk about what a tremendous event the Royal Rumble was. Vince, Gorilla and Alfred couldn't believe that Sgt. Slaughter cost Hulk Hogan a chance to win the Rumble, while Heenan and Slick said that Hogan should've been paying attention to the Macho King and not Sgt. Slaughter. Heenan and Slick then went on to criticize Hogan for interfering in Slaughter's match against the Ultimate Warrior, with Vince, Gorilla and Alfred saying what was good for the goose was good for the gander. At the end of the roundtable, Vince mentioned that Chris Jericho was allowed to team up with Mr. Perfect, Haku and the Barbarian in an eight man tag match we were going to see next and questioned Bobby Heenan about it. Heenan said it was a good chance to scout some talent. Gorilla said he heard that Jimmy Hart might be scouting Jericho as well, which Heenan blew off as baloney, while Slick again chastised Gorilla for "trying to drive a wedge between two good friends." Vince then plugged the fact that the WWF will now be hosting PPVs on a monthly basis, and that coming up on Sunday, February 17, the WWF will present Canadian Stampede at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was only going to be $9.99!</p><p> <strong>Grade: B-</strong></p><p> </p><p> -Mr. Perfect, Chris Jericho, Haku and Barbarian def. Slick told Heenan if he can sign Jericho, he will be the first to congratulate him on signing such a great talent. The panelists then talked about the roll Ted DiBiase seems to be on now, having defeated his former bodyguard, Virgil, at the Royal Rumble, and now getting a victory over the legendary Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. Before the roundtable ended, Gorilla Monsoon said he had a special surprise for Bobby Heenan. Heenan thought it would be a gift of some sorts, but instead...</p><p> </p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/BCBbUoR.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> It was a surprise visit from former Heenan Family member, "Ravishing" Rick Rude. Heenan looked like he had seen a ghost as Rude approached him and told him he had heard all the things he's said about him after he was suspended.</p><p> </p><p> Rude: <strong>For years, Weasel, I took the fall for you. Who was it that got suspended for all the comments YOU made about the Boss Man's mother? It certainly wasn't you! It was ME! All because you paid me to say things about her that I didn't mean. But the suspension was a blessing in disguise, because it made me take a look at the man I had become. I was disgusted with how I sold out my integrity, and I promised myself if I ever had the chance to make up for it, I would! And now I have that chance. I've been given a second chance in life. The Boss Man is giving me a second chance, and hopefully the fans will as well. But you? You have NO CHANCE against the Boss Man and myself!</strong></p><p> </p><p> With that, Rude stormed off, and Heenan couldn't believe what just transpired.</p><p> <strong>Grade: B</strong></p><p> </p><p> -Sean Mooney recapped this year's Royal Rumble. We saw highlights of Vader's dominating performance, Jake Roberts and Rick Martel going at it, and "Macho King" Randy Savage winning the Rumble after Sgt. Slaughter distracted Hulk Hogan. Alfred recalled about being out there with Sean Mooney this past week to call the action and how he was shocked to see Taylor. Slaughter; WWF World Tag Team Champions, the Hart Foundation, would defend the titles against the Orient Express, stating that what we saw earlier was apparently the Orient Express sending a message to the champions; and the Big Boss Man would challenge Mr. Perfect for the WWF Intercontinental Title, with more matches to be announced. The panel was then joined by Tito Santana and Razor Ramon via satellite, as both had requested this time as apparently, Razor had mouthed off on a radio interview about Tito Santana getting manhandled by Vader at the Royal Rumble. Tito told Razor that if he had the guts, to face him in a match. Razor said he wasn't going to get his hands dirty with Tito just yet, and said that he found a suitable opponent for him at Canadian Stampede: the Mountie. Tito said after he got done with the Mountie, he was coming for Razor Ramon, and Razor said he'll be watching at ringside as a fan as he just purchased a front row ticket.</p><p> <strong>Grade: B-</strong></p><p> </p><p> -The Undertaker def. I actually didn't have plans to sign Rude right away until I read that post, and figured I could try out Rude as a face given what Heenan had said about him.</p>

DARK MATCHES

-El Dandy def. Rudy Boy Gonzalez by pinfall with the Dandy Roll.

Grade: D-

-The Warlord, the Brooklyn Brawler, Barry Horowitz and the Genius def. Jim Powers, Sam Houston and the Bushwhackers by submission when Warlord locked Houston into the Full Nelson.

Grade: D+

=======================================================

-The show opened with Vince McMahon introducing tonight's panel of Gorilla Monsoon, Mean Gene Okerlund, Bobby Heenan and Sgt. Slaughter. McMahon mentioned that the action we're seeing tonight took place at the Kiel Auditorium this past Wednesday night, with Mean Gene putting over what a great time he had. But Bobby Heenan and Sgt. Slaughter talked about how glad they were to be out of St. Louis. Gorilla asked the Sarge directly what business he had at ringside for the Royal Rumble match, and the Sarge responded by saying "What business did Hulk Hogan have costing me the WWF Championship?!" With that, we go to our first match of the night.

Grade: B-

-The Mountie def. Virgil by submission with the Quebec Crab.

Grade: C+

-"The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith and "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich def. Haku and the Barbarian when Bulldog pinned Barbarian after botched interference from Jimmy Hart, who had come down to ringside at the bewilderment of Bobby Heenan. Hart told Heenan he wanted to help his friend out, but wound up hurting Haku and Barbarian when he had thrown his megaphone into the ring, which Bulldog caught while the ref was distracted with Tornado fighting Haku outside the ring, knocking him out with a Tornado Punch.

Grade: B-

-To the Event Center we go. Sean Mooney hypes the February PPV, Canadian Stampede, noting that we'll see WWF World Heavyweight Champion, the Ultimate Warrior, team with Hulk Hogan against "Macho King" Randy Savage and Sgt. Slaughter in the main event. He also mentioned that Paul Bearer would host the first ever Funeral Parlor with guest Rowdy Roddy Piper. We heard a promo from Piper hyping the appearance, then a response from Taker and Bearer. We close out the segment with promos from Mr. Perfect and Big Boss Man hyping their WWF Intercontinental Title match.

Grade: B+

-Back to the roundtable, where the panel discussed how Canadian Stampede was shaping up to be a great event, now with the addition of the first ever Funeral Parlor with guest Rowdy Roddy Piper. McMahon announced another match just made by President Jack Tunney: the first ever Four Corners Tag Team Elimination match to determine who will compete for the WWF World Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania VII. Basically, anybody can tag out to anybody else throughout the match, and when a team is pinned, made to submit, counted out or disqualified, they will be sent to the back. The match will feature the Rockers, Power & Glory, the Legion of Doom and the Nasty Boys. Bobby Heenan said he wished the Nasty Boys luck, to which Gorilla Monsoon said he didn't sound very sincere. Before the Brain could respond, Vince sent it to the next match.

Grade: B

-Hercules def. Hawk by pinfall after Paul Roma interfered by hitting Hawk with Herc's chain while Slick distracted the referee.

Grade: C+

-Hercules and Paul Roma were putting the boots to Hawk, but Animal, looking as mean and menacing as ever, ran down to the ring to fight them off. Hawk managed to get back to his feet and helped Animal chase Power & Glory and their manager, Slick, to the back.

Grade: C+

-The panel discussed the on-going feud between Jake "The Snake" Roberts and "The Model" Rick Martel. Vince, Gorilla and Gene talked about the determination of Roberts to recover his eyesight like he has over the past several weeks, while Heenan and Slaughter said it was only a matter of time before Martel would completely blind the Snake.

Grade: B+

-Back to the Event Center with Sean Mooney, where we see general promos from Owen Hart, Chris Jericho and Demolition with Brother Love, all putting themselves over.

Grade: D+

-Earthquake, Dino Bravo and the Nasty Boys def. Tugboat, Jimmy Snuka and the Rockers when Earthquake hit the Earthquake Splash on Snuka.

Grade: B-

-Time for the Brother Love Show, and Brother Love's guests were attorney Mike Sekulow and his client, Terry Taylor. Sekulow said that the gag order was now lifted and Taylor could say his piece. Taylor talked about how when Bobby Heenan told him to call himself the Red Rooster, it was simply a test to see if he had the intestinal fortitude to make it in the Heenan Family. But then when made the stupid mistake of quitting the Heenan Family, he was convinced by none other than Jim Duggan, who he thought was a good friend, to keep calling himself the Red Rooster. But he realized that Duggan was doing everything in his power to keep him from making it to the top by convincing him to be a rooster, causing him to lose his concentration and lose matches. Jim Duggan heard enough and came running out, attacking both Sekulow and Taylor! All three men were brawling when a group of officials had to run out to separate them!

Grade: C+

-Vader def. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine by pinfall with the Vader Bomb.

Grade: C+

-Back to the Event Center with Sean Mooney, who hypes up Canadian Stampede once again. He mentions we'll see Tito Santana take on the Mountie with Razor Ramon sitting at ringside, and we heard comments from both men. Sean Mooney then hyped up the WWF World Tag Team Title match pitting current champions the Hart Foundation against the Orient Express. We heard comments from the Hart Foundation, then from Mr. Fuji while Kato and Tanaka stood by.

Grade: C+

-Rick Martel def. Rick Rude by pinfall with a school boy roll up and holding the tights after Bobby Heenan came down to ringside and distracted Rude.

Grade: B-

-After the match, Rude gave chase after Heenan. Martel was left alone in the ring and celebrating his victory when Jake "The Snake" Roberts came running down to the ring and tossed his big python, Damien, into the ring. Martel was so frightened that when he tried to get away, he fell on his back, allowing Jake to get into the ring and wrap Damien around Martel. Martel was screaming like a girl, trying frantically to get Damien off of him until Jake decided enough was enough and got the snake off of him.

Grade: B

-Hulk Hogan def. "Macho King" Randy Savage by DQ when Sensational Queen Sherri and Sgt. Slaughter both interfered.

Grade: A

-After the match, the Ultimate Warrior ran down to the ring to try and save Hogan from a two-on-one beatdown, but wound up getting beat up by Savage and Slaughter as well, with Sherri watching on in glee.

Grade: A*

-We close the show with the last roundtable of the night, where Vince, Gorilla and Gene were all scolding Sgt. Slaughter for his and Macho King's actions. Sarge said that neither Hulk Hogan nor the Ultimate Warrior would make it to WrestleMania after he and Savage got finished with them at Canadian Stampede, and that President Jack Tunney would have no choice but to make the main event "Macho King" Randy Savage vs. Sgt. Slaughter for the vacant WWF World Championship because Warrior will be too injured to defend it. Vince then said good night, and announced that a new TV show was coming to TNN: Monday Night Raw, live every Monday night from the Manhattan Center in New York City starting in March.

Grade: B

Overall Grade: A

Backstage Notes:

-Jimmy Snuka was not happy with doing the job to Earthquake, but Vince McMahon chose not to keep him strong and has chosen not to take any action to appease the Superfly.

<p>Main Event</p><p>

<strong>The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan</strong> vs. "Macho King" Randy Savage and Sgt. Slaughter</p><p>

<em>Yeah... no way those two are losing...</em></p><p> </p><p>

WWF Intercontinental Championship</p><p>

<strong>Mr. Perfect</strong> vs. The Big Boss Man</p><p>

<em>To transfer the feud to Rude/Perfect for Mania VII - and what a match THAT would be!</em></p><p> </p><p>

WWF World Tag Team Championship</p><p>

<strong>The Hart Foundation</strong> vs. The Orient Express</p><p>

<em>Orient Express never really got the shake they deserved - the stuff they did with the Rockers was incredible for the time... but no... they're not world champ material.</em></p><p> </p><p>

4 Corners Elimination #1 Contenders Match</p><p>

<strong>The Rockers</strong> vs. Power & Glory vs. The Nasty Boys vs. The Legion of Doom</p><p>

<em>This could go any way really... but I'm hoping for a Rockers/Harts showdown</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tito Santana</strong> vs. The Mountie</p><p>

<em>He's a Jobber to the Stars... but the only way you can build a good JTTS is have him beat those lower than him... and Jacques Rougeau is lower than Tito.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Matches Just Added By President Jack Tunney</p><p>

-<strong>Vader</strong> vs. The Bushwhackers</p><p>

<em>Yaaaaaayyyy!!! Although... I would mark BIG TIME if a serious Vader beating resulted in the Sheepherders making their comeback!</em></p><p> </p><p>

-Jake "The Snake" Roberts and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. <strong>Rick "The Model" Martel and Terry Taylor</strong></p><p>

<em>Taylor has just comeback and needs a win to set him up - Martel's coming off a strong Rumble and I see Jake winning their feud so a little heat for the Model with Hacksaw eating the pinfall makes sense.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>With this the Big Bossman can get the IC title at Wrestlemania.</em></p><p> </p><p>

WWF World Tag Team Championship</p><p>

<strong>The Hart Foundation</strong> vs. The Orient Express</p><p>

<em>I can't see Kato and Tanaka winning this.... If they do, it should be in a Post-Wrestlemania scenario.</em></p><p> </p><p>

4 Corners Elimination #1 Contenders Match</p><p>

The Rockers vs. <strong>Power & Glory</strong> vs. The Nasty Boys vs. The Legion of Doom</p><p>
