TCW: The Real World

'They said the WWE had a stranglehold on the industry.... They were right'

In January of 2011, the wrestling landscape changed more drastically than ever before. Vince McMahon, buoyed by the financial backing one amasses after years and years of success, stood atop the wrestling landscape unopposed. His WWE hadn't been rivaled since the spectacular implosion of WCW over a decade prior. His main competition in the modern day, TNA, floundered light years behind him, financial issues and poor story-telling, a constant blight upon their continued existence.

But as Vince's body and mind grew weary and he neared his 66th birthday, Vince knew he didn't have time on his side, and as thoughts of retirement reared their ugly head, Vince knew the time was right to step away from the industry that had given him so much, but before he left, Vince wanted to give something back.

Secret meetings were organised, owners and majority share-holders schmoozed, hands shaken and dotted lines signed. Finally Vince's grand vision had been achieved and it had only cost him his personal fortune.

Finally a year later, almost a year to the day of his grand epiphany, Vincent Kennedy McMahon took to the podium to deliver a bombshell which would go down in the annals as the 'rebirth of an industry'.

Vince's speech held many soundbites...

"... This years Wrestlemania 28 will be the last event held by the WWE..."

"... The industry will enter a cooling down period..."

"... A grand rebirth..."

However they all paled in comparison to his last statement.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to announce the purchase and dissolution of every significant wrestling company in the world. After Wrestlemania 28, all of the companies I have purchased will close their doors for the final time, before the wrestling industry as we know it is reborn in an era of new competition and prosperity,"

Further details would emerge after Wrestlemania finished with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson posing triumphantly on the turnbuckles. Each company would be dissolved and their assets expunged from the record books, 42 new companies of varying sizes would take their place, all existing contracts would be revoked and any TV and PPV deals would be canceled. After eight months of dormancy,

A New Era Was Born.

A Look Forward to 2014 (North America)

A year has now passed in the 'CodysMustache-verse' and New Years 2014 ushers in another year of fast paced action and another year of the rivalry between TCW and SWF.

TCW

Company Rank: 1. TCW's owner and booker Shane McMahon announced his return to the wrestling industry in a big way last year guiding his TCW to the number 1 ranking in the world over his fathers former company SWF. TCW was able to ride on the back of superb matches from Bryan Danielson, TCW World Champion CM Punk, AJ Styles and Samoa Joe to victory over SWF in 2013 and appear poised to continue their momentum in 2014 on the back of two budding stars in Adam Cole and Chris Hero. Cole was brought along slowly in 2013, managing a few solid victories over members of the midcard before finding a solid home as one half of 'Intellectually Superior' alongside Damien Sandow. Hero on the other hand was catapulted into the main event picture during July and August, seemingly going from anonymous mid carder to superstar overnight, how well Hero deals with the push and just how far TCW wants to go with him will be one of if not the biggest things to watch in 2014.

SWF

Company Rank: 2. SWF began the year under the control of Vince McMahon and that didn't last too long as Vince of course retired in June, allowing Jeff Katz the former owner of Wrestling Revolution Project before Vince's buyout to takeover the reigns.

Obviously with their drop down the rankings Katz and his booker Ed Ferrera failed to capatalize on the succes Vince had created prior to his retirement, although if they manage to use reigning 'wrestler of the year' and World Champion Nick Nemeth (Dolph Ziggler) and burgeoning superstar Cody Rhodes to their full potential alongside established stars John Cena and The Rock, they stand a very good chance at retaking the number 1 position, especially if Cody Rhodes and the Rock can repeat their 'Match of the Year' winning performance.

USPW

Company Rank 3. USPW faltered in 2013, failing to keep up with TCW and SWF. A poor roster really held them back this year with Paul Wight (The Big Show), Jeff Hardy and Champion Kofi Kingston unable to compete with names like Cena, Punk, Nemeth and Danielson. 2014 looks to be a long year for the Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley led federation as Hardy (36) and an already injury-prone Wight (40) get one year older.

NOTBPW

Company Rank 4. NOTBPW's mostly Canadian roster had similar results throughout the year as USPW, although their future appears much brighter as their contingent of main eventers, Bobby Roode (36), Kevin Steen (29), Petey Williams (31) and World Champion TJ Wilson (Tyson Kidd) are much more suited to future growth than those down south at USPW. I expect there to be a very tight race between NOTBPW and USPW for third place this year and the smart money is on the northern company.

CGC

Company Rank 5. CGC brings up the rear as a distant fifth in North America. CGC simply lacks the star power of the top four companies. Former WWE jobber Harry Smith leads the company at the moment as their major champion. Whilst still capable of good matches CGC will need a serious injection of star power before they even think about rising in these rankings.

Rounding out the Top Ten.

Company Rank 6. 4C

Company Rank 7. PSW

Company Rank 8. AAA

Comapny Rank 9. CZCW

Comapny Rank 10. NYCW

So, basically what I've done is take CaptainCharisma's January 2013 data and import all of the Cornell-verse companies into it at the expense of the real world federations. I've already played through a year and this dynasty will begin Week 1 of 2014, just 4 short weeks before TCW's answer to Wrestlemania, Wrestlebowl 2. My product is the standard TCW product with altered match times for TV. The product seems to be working very well as I've had 2 99 rated matches, a 98 rated match, a 97 and 3 96's spread over the 60 shows I held in 2013. But alas that is all but in the past and the focus of this dynasty must be the future.... All aboard the hype train.

<span style="color:#696969;">This show seems to be rather run of the mill so far, although the main event should be quite interesting as you have Chris Hero, the number 1 contender for the TCW title taking on Kurt Angle, whose creative control clause has been a bane for TCW management thus far. It could theoretically go either way with both men locks for the Wrestlebowl card.</span></p><p><span style="color:#696969;">

AJ Styles vs Doug Williams is another match to look out for especially with Samoa Joe at the commentary table.</span></p>

'Showtime' Eric Young vs Joe Hennig

  • Eric Young is the crowd favorite in this one, displaying his unique, enthusiastic charisma reminiscent of his time as a crowd favourite in TNA.
  • Young and Hennig begin the match circling each other before Hennig drops to the mat and rolls to the outside.
  • Hennig gets the upper hand when he cheap-shots Young as he exits the ring in pursuit.
  • Hennig uses the outside of the ring to his advantage bouncing Young's head off of the steps, repeatedly throwing him into the barricade and even performing a Perfectplex on the floor before rolling Young into the ring.
  • Despite being dominated on the outside Young manages to kick-out at 2 when Hennig goes for the cover.
  • Young manages to bring himself back into the match when he reverses a second Perfectplex into a Death-Valley Driver.
  • After a cross-body from the top-rope Young picks up the three count with a second Death Valley Driver.

Eric Young def. Joe Hennig after a roll-up in 14:48 (Rating: 75)

Jay Briscoe vs Adam Cole

  • Briscoe starts the match in control of Cole, using dropkicks and clothesline to keep Cole unbalanced.
  • Cole takes the beating in the early going before managing to drop Briscoe face-first into the top turnbuckle and regain his composure.
  • After some back and forth offense, Cole reverses a Jay Driller into the Florida Key and pins the Tag Champion clean.

Adam Cole def. Jay Briscoe after a Florida Key in 16:12 (Rating: 81)

After the match, Adam Cole and his partner Damien Sandow cut a quick promo taunting and insulting the Briscoe Brothers. (Rating: 64)

Jay Lethal vs Matt Jackson

  • Lethal and Jackson both made sure this match was kept at a high pace, both men traded aerial maneuvers throughout the contest which got appropriate pop from the crowd.
  • After hitting the Macho Man Elbow, Lethal hit the Lethal Combination to pin Jackson.

AJ Styles vs Doug Williams

  • Samoa Joe was the first to enter as strolled down the ramp and took his seat behind the commentary desk.
  • The crowd was firmly behind AJ Styles in the early going of the match, with the crowd chanting "A-J-A-J-A-J" repeatedly.
  • Both men start the match trading grapples on the mat, with AJ locking in a head-scissors.
  • Samoa Joe is questioned about his matches with AJ in TNA and says that AJ was indeed one of his greatest rivals.
  • AJ has to roll to the outside after being absolutely flattened by a Doug Williams clothesline.
  • The crowd pops big time when AJ manages to hit a Pele on Williams on the arena floor, Williams is able to return to the ring after a count of 8.
  • After trading more holds in the ring, Williams is almost hit with the Styles Clash after Styles rolls through a sunsetflip/pin combination, Williams however is able to roll out of Harms way to the floor.
  • The fight is taken over toward the announce table where AJ slams Williams head onto the table repeatedly, dimming the Brit's lights. AJ's control doesn't last long as Williams manages to throw Styles across the table into Samoa Joe's lap with a last-gasp effort.
  • Upon return to the ring AJ lays out Williams with a brutal DDT, before hitting a 450 Splash to pick up the victory.

AJ Styles def. Doug Williams in 16:43 after a 450 Springboard Splash (Rating: 80)

Joe stomps on AJ repeatedly before lifting him onto the turnbuckle and performing the Musclebuster, grabbing his title and leaving (Rating: 81)

Backstage we see Tyler Black grabbing something to eat from the catering table when James Storm and Joe Hennig attack him from behind in an obvious attempt to soften up Black before he takes on Storm at Wrestlebowl II, Hennig and Storm slam Black into a near-by wall before staff members manage to separate the three and call for help (Rating: 67)

MAINEVENT

Kurt Angle vs Chris Hero

  • Chris Hero lives up to his billing as the hottest new star in wrestling as the arena walls reverberate with chants of "Hero clap-clap-clap, Hero clap-clap-clap."
  • Kurt comes to the ring amid a loud chorus of boos, the 45 year old didn't let it rattle him, as his trademark intensity was evident from the second he stepped out from behind the curtain.
  • Angle takes the advantage in the early going, taking down Hero with a single leg takedown seconds after the opening bell.
  • Angle continues his early dominance, hooking his legs around Hero's waist and paintbrushing the back of Hero's head.

  • Both men trade offense and strikes in the corner with Hero using his dangerous elbows to get the better of the encounter
  • Hero goes for the first pin of the contest after hitting Angle with a suplex, Angle manages to kick out at 2 however and keep the match going
  • Hero continues to control the match until he misses a clothesline and falls victim to a trio of german suplexes from Kurt Angle.
  • Angle rises to his feet after the 'plexes and drops the straps from his shoulders and lets out a yell
  • Angle turns back to Hero and lifts him up for the Angle Slam and then rolls through and clamps on the Angle lock, Hero is however able to make it to the ropes
  • Angle continues to control the bout with multiple slams and submission holds keeping Hero dangerously close to losing this bout
  • Sensing the end is nigh, Angle goes for a second Angle Slam, but Hero is able to escape his grip and hit the Death Blow for the 1-2-3.

Chris Hero def. Kurt Angle in 23:21 with a Death Blow (Rating: 82)

After the match is over Angle regains his senses and attacks a celebrating Chris Hero, Angle lands several solid shots and grabs a steel chair from ringside. Hero's tag team partner, Claudio Castagnoli runs out to make the save before Kurt can do any real damage. As he backs up the ramp Angle lets out a laugh and Castagnoli glares at him the entire way. (Rating: 85)

The cameras flick backstage for the final segment of the night, an interview with TCW Champion CM Punk about his opponent for Wrestlebowl II.

CM Punk's Interview

Shane McMahon: "I'm here with TCW World Champion, CM Punk, who will defend his title in 4 weeks against Chris Hero at Wrestlebowl II at the Edward Jones Dome in Saint Louis.

Punk, I think everybody at home wants to know about the history behind you and Chris."

TCW Champion CM Punk:"Ah yes, my opponent for Wrestlebowl, Chris Hero. You see we do go way back, we came through the indies together with Colt Cabana over at SWF. [Pauses] I mean there's something to be said about the bond you create with someone when you drive 400 miles across the country to fight in a barbed-wire, light-tube, flaming table death match, for nothing more than the compensation of 20 bucks and a pat on the back. But Chris and I, we pushed forward, kept striving to the top of this industry, [increases the intensity of his words] and I made it. I became ROH Champion, I signed with the WWE, I became a six time World Champion. [Pauses, returns to normal intensity] But Chris was still fighting in high school gyms in front of 20 oily, acne prone teenagers who think seeing someone piledriven through a flaming tack-covered table is the highlight of their meaningless misogynistic lives. Chris never quite made it to the big time like me and it's always stuck with him, an inferiority complex, if you will. He knows deep down that I'm better than he is and it kills him. And now after finally breaking through, his Cinderella finally making it to the ball, he thinks he has a chance at taking the title that I built from the ground up. But come Wrestlebowl II, when he leaves his slipper behind, I won't be the one returning it. I'll be the one crushing it, alongside any desires he might hold upon MY World Title."

(Rating: 86)

Attendance: 13,619

Overall Rating: 82
