The Death of the Territories

"When you think Wrestling Bears, think D.O.T.T."

Since 2004, the Death of the Territories mod has been there to (hopefully) expand and enhance Adam Ryland's Wrestling Spirit series of text-based beat 'em ups. While the kernels of what would become D.O.T.T. started with the last EWR and would carry over through the first four TEWs, I believe that Wrestling Spirit provided the perfect vehicle to celebrate the wrestling of my childhood. For good or bad, this is my homage to both.

Enjoy.

Thanks, Adam.

And thanks to Troy for that swell Bear Man's banner. ;)

Required Files:

* D.O.T.T Database Folder

* D.O.T.T Pictures Folder

* People #1

* People #2

* People #3

* And just to be a complete pain in the wazoo... one picture I forgot to zip up:

http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt315/BoonsGhost/JungleWoman.jpg

Installation:

* Open your WreSpi3 folder.

* Unzip (or Unrar) the D.O.T.T Databases Folder file. Place the entire unzipped 'D.O.T.T' folder into the WreSpi3 > Databases folder.

* Unzip the D.O.T.T Pictures Folder file. Place the entire unzipped 'D.O.T.T' folder into the WreSpi3 > Pictures folder.

* Unzip each of the three People files directly to your WreSpi3 > Pictures > D.O.T.T > People folder.

[Don't forget the above Jungle Woman! Lord Forbid...]

* After loading the game, switch to the D.O.T.T database from the title screen.

* Double check that the pictures are being used by going into the editor > Edit Database > Database Info ... the Picture Folder should be set to 'D.O.T.T'

Notes:

* Make sure to snag the latest (Feb 09) Wrestling Spirit 3 patch.

* I have yet to work on chunks of Japan and Europe. Some individual wrestlers from those game areas have had conversion related stat tweaks and attributes assigned to them, but I focused elsewhere for this release. If you wish to play someone there, keep that in mind.

* As I did not feel right setting up any one promotion as Huge, the 'Iconic' storylines will be unavailable to your character.

Updates:

D.O.T.T. v2.0.

[simply unzip and then toss the WreSpi3.mdb file into your Databases / D.O.T.T folder. When prompted, replace the old one.]

Thanks.

After seeing Joint Promotions in the U.K. signing every known wrestler with British Isles popularity to Written deals, I worked over the U.K. scene. I fleshed out the pool of workers, tweaked all Brit-based wrestler stats & popularity, and assigned (or created) Attribute & Movesets for them.

If you want the data, I replaced the above 'D.O.T.T Database Folder' with the new stuff.

Apologies for updating so quickly, but it was annoying me. :)

And, Jaded! I fleshed out the GLOW scene to a ridiculous extent with you in mind. I will be sure to send you my therapist bills. :D

This newest Wrestling Spirit can be brutal. D.O.T.T. makes it especially so.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

I started a career as Lord Humongous, who I thought was pretty cool back in the day. He starts as a Low Level villain working for Watts' Mid-South promotion. Managed by Skandor Akbar, he's got a nice Attribute Set that compliments his bruising move set; in particular, the Rule Breaker (lvl 2) attribute that helps his hockey mask headbutting.

He goes on a 22-0 winning streak. In the process he successfully completes six storylines and raises himself up to the midcard. Awesome!

I find that Mid-South is an excellent place to work. Watts' hard-line stance on rules infractions and top rope moves makes it unique, in that I finally start seeing the AI get himself DQ'ed. Yeah, yeah. We'll ignore the fact that the AI high fliers should be smart enough NOT to fly high when said moves will result in them getting tossed. They are easy wins. I am not too proud.

22-0! I almost want to start a diary so I can prove that mine is bigger than yours.

I then decide to take on the 'Sweet Sixteen' storyline. I've never played that one. Should be a cake walk.

He wins the first match against The Snowman. 23-0! Easy.

And then it happens...

I lose the next round matchup against Robert freaking Gibson of the Rock & Roll Express. A fluke Sleeper does me in. Not the Late Inning variant. Oh, no. We're talking the crappy, twerpy, 'I've got to give Jobbers a Finisher here' Sleeper Hold.

Undefeated no more. Boo-hiss.

Oh, well. We can't all be Goldberg... Or those that boast of pulling the old 'Don't Save My Game' trick. ;)

As I lost the storyline, I get sucked into that horrid 'Under Pressure...' storyline. Of course, I lose all three bouts to Terry Taylor (by DQ!), Tim Horner (another fluke Sleeper Hold!), and Steve 'Dr. Death' Williams (my first 1v1 bout against the guy = he pounds me into the pavement).

August of 1984. I am nine months in and I am right back where I started: A chump low leveler working for Bill Watts.

My kingdom for a midget to toss!!

:D

... What exactly is the background image in the worker pictures? Way back yonder I was convinced it was a lunar surface and it still looks like that to me when I look at it.

The profile background is actually an old wrestling/boxing ring. The old title screen featured it as well, though it had a blue tint applied:

<p>Maybe I'm missing something, but two wrestlers I liked aren't in this database, even though they were 18 by December 1983 (when the game starts).</p><p> </p><p>

One is Toshiaki Kawada, one of Mitsuharu Misawa's rivals. His picture is in the database, though. And he was in WS2's DOTT--what happened to have him removed from this one?</p><p> </p><p>

The other is admittedly a bit more obscure: Bryan Clark, who played Adam Bomb in the WWF and Wrath in WCW. According to Adam Bomb's WrestleCrap entry, it's a shame he didn't succeed, because "he was just the sort of guy Vince loves: big, strong, and with a good look." Unlike Kawada, he wasn't in WS2's DOTT, so perhaps there's a good reason for this one.</p><p> </p><p>

Also, it sucks that you guys didn't feel comfortable classifying any promotion as Huge, since promotions don't change size in this game (I know this was a deliberate design decision from Adam Ryland, so players couldn't run out of employers). I've been tempted to change the WWF and possibly NJPW to Huge, myself, since the WWF was about to become that big anyway.</p><p> </p><p>

Plus, I wanted to start a Career mode as Ultimo Dragon, but I wasn't allowed to, presumably because he hadn't debuted by December 1983. That stunk...especially considering how much fun DOTT has been otherwise. I guess this was a casualty of the way the game itself was programmed.</p><p> </p><p>

Still, these flaws aside, I have to thank you for your tremendous work. I'd pay you for it if you had the means to receive it.</p>

<p>Input such as this is payment enough, Trackball. I very much appreciate your taking the time to pass it along. </p><p> </p><p>

* While putting this all together, I had originally intended on focusing on the Americas - with select puro guys as touring attractions. Kawada was one of the Japanese wrestlers that I deleted. I eventually changed my mind and thought I had imported them all back in, but missed on him.</p><p> </p><p>

As I have the original conversion, I imported him in for an update. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.</p><p> </p><p>

Speaking of the Japanese scene, other than All Japan Women's, none of the wrestlers have Attribute Sets assigned to them. I have to admit ignorance on a lot of those guys; I am not sure I would know where to start.</p><p> </p><p>

---------</p><p> </p><p>

* As far as Bryan Clark, I have heard of the Adam Bomb character - but that's about it. Most of the 'youngsters' that are in D.O.T.T. are either those that I was somewhat familiar with, or requests along the way. </p><p> </p><p>

I can certainly add him in, though.</p><p> </p><p>

---------</p><p> </p><p>

* Ultimo Dragon's debut date is the result of the WS2 conversion forcing all wrestlers to debut at 18. I tried to fix all of those dates, but I am sure there were quite a few that fell through the cracks. He should have been set to December of '83, which I made sure to do once you mentioned it. </p><p> </p><p>

Considering the many fudged dates in the game of the 'Legends' and future stars, validity wasn't a primary concern. Still, Dragon was one of those guys I wanted available to play off the bat. Thanks again for catching that.</p><p> </p><p>

---------</p><p> </p><p>

* I wasn't too sure on my decision to exclude Huge Companies, to be honest. There are drawbacks either way. If, for example, you went with the WWF and New Japan as Huge, you would need to have approx. 50 Mega Stars to populate those rosters. To me, that was going too far against the territorial model I wanted to represent. </p><p> </p><p>

Granted, Adam did away with regional popularity. As such, a territorial model is an even bigger square peg this go around. But 50 Mega Stars in the early 80s? That was simply too much of a concession to Adam's hatred of old time wrestling. </p><p> </p><p>

I also didn't like the one company conclusion to a career, but I'm sticking with blaming Adam's near fanatical bias. I am beginning to suspect he is a closeted Big Daddy fan, to be honest. There is no other explanation. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Nothing spectacular, but could always be trusted to put on three-star matches in the midcard, making the other guys look good too--who knows how good he could have gotten. Unfortunately, his luck with TV was almost as bad as Terry Taylor's.</p><p> </p><p> First, there was the Adam Bomb character, which was pure cheese that was stuck in that weird period from 1993-1995, when no one in the industry could figure out just what the fans wanted, and as a result, ratings fell. Check out the WrestleCrap article on the character, if you've got permission to see the archives (it's only 15 dollars, and you never have to pay another cent).</p><p> </p><p> Incidentally, when Adam Bomb made his entrance, word is he would sometimes throw little footballs (like nuclear warheads?) into the audience, and apparently they had his name on them. I wonder if anyone still has one of those--talk about a rare collectors' item.</p><p> </p><p> When he went to WCW, he played this strange dark character called Wrath, who was actually starting to get over with some good ring work and a winning streak...and then he ran into Kevin Nash, who beat him in less than five minutes, in a match booked by Nash to build himself up for the Goldberg bout at Starrcade '98. That was the end of Wrath getting over.</p><p> </p><p> (I've read The Death of WCW cover to cover--can you tell?)</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="37414" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Ultimo Dragon's debut date is the result of the WS2 conversion forcing all wrestlers to debut at 18. I was hesitant too, since I'm not that familiar with the intricacies of the game's design yet, and thought it would basically break the game or something if I did that to those two companies.</p><p> </p><p> Still, really glad I could help. Just downloaded the updated database, and I'm looking forward to the more available guys! Thanks so much for your time and effort!</p>
