dp68
Help!!! I'm completely dumbstruck. I just bought a new laptop - an Acer Aprire 5002 with 1 meg DDR and Turion M64, shared vid memory of 128mb. I decided to install Bowl Bound and Total Extreme Wrestling on the new laptop, but neither will boot up! When I click either the shortcut or the actual program, the disk accesses for a few seconds, then it just stops. Nothing. No error message, no program, nothing. Very high level games are playing fine - I'm currently playing Civ 4, and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 works great. OOTP6 plays fine, Puresim works great... Whatever the problem is, it is only affect my 2 Greydog games. I considered it being a registry problem, but there wasn't anything of note. I also checked to ensure I had the VB files in the Windows/System32 directory, and as far as I can tell that is a-ok. Guys...I'm totally lost. This makes no sense to me. The only relation I can find is BB and TEW are both Greydog games, and neither will even boot up on my notebook. What do these games have in common that might cause them not to run on a given PC? Do they all access certain files? Are they written on a special platform? Please help if you can.

dp68
Nope that is not it. Important point to make: it turns out OOTP does NOT work either, only Puresim. So what do OOTP, TEW 2005, and Bowl Bound have in common? Drum roll please...freaking Elicense! Somehow my Elicense control is corrupted. If I go into the XP Control Panel, and click on the Elicense Control folder, it is totally BLANK! I did some searching around in Google for similar problems, and many people have run into this. In fact there is a thread about it on these very boards: http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/printthread.php?t=2286 And another thread on the OOTP boards: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/printthread.php?t=49246&pp=40 All of this is because of this idiotic Elicense-ing system, which apparently goes corrupt now and then in Windows. And when it goes, you lose the rights to ALL your games. Whenever you click to run them, nothing happens. I've written Elicense about this, but considering it is in the middle of the night I doubt I'll get a response until sometime tomorrow afternoon. Even then, it appears the only person who managed to fix this problem did so by re-installing XP. Beautiful. I'm all for software developers protecting their work, but this Elicense thing just has to go. Besides having to re-license if you want to switch computers, just wait until it corrupts on you! Then you lose all your favorite games. If Sid Meier doesn't need Elicense, I don't see why anybody else should need it to protect intellectual property. I'm going to wait to hear from Elicense. If I am able to fix the problem through them, or through re-installing XP, I will re-post and let everyone know. Once I get the problem fixed, we should sticky the problem, because it's going to happen again. Maybe to you next time!
dp68
I finally fixed the problem, and it's not even 4 am yet...sigh. I have added the problem fix as its own seperate thread. I hope the board admins will consider making it a Sticky.
