Thanksgiving Dinner 2012

Rip Chord’s West Texas Ranch

While many considered Rip Chord the best professional wrestler to ever lace a pair of boots, he was even more than that to me. To me, he was a mentor and more importantly, a friend. It was good to see him doing so well. Even though he was moving slower these days, it was clear that retirement was agreeing with him. All the years of hard living and excessive bumping had certainly taken their toll, but he still had one of the best minds in the business and he was happy to pass his knowledge down.

Like an old retired war general, Rip had earned a peaceful retirement.

We were sitting on the porch, enjoying cigars, watching the sun go down after filling ourselves up with a Thanksgiving meal that couldn’t be beat. After a few minutes, Rip broke the silence by mentioning the business for the first time all day. “I can’t believe Richard’s stepping down. I thought the bastard would die in his office.” Rip puffed his cigar.

While it hadn’t hit the dirt sheets yet, it might be the biggest news story to hit the business since JK Stallings opened HGC. Under pressure from an on-going federal investigation, Richard Eisen was stepping down as CEO of the SWF and his son Jerry was taking over.

“He’s got atomic heat with the IRS, boss.” I said. “I think he’s trying to keep the scandal away from the business for Jerry and Eric. It’s a big opportunity for Jerry though. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with it.”

“This is going to create a lot of opportunity out there Sam. Even Cornell, if he is as smart as I think he is, he’ll make a big move right now too.”

“I’m sure he will do something. He’s got a loaded roster--hell, you trained most of them.” I smiled at Rip.

He grunted and smirked. “You’ve contributed a fair share yourself, Sam.”

Rip’s son, Jay, came outside to join us. A lot of people in the business thought the kid was pompous ass, but I actually liked him. Once he paid his dues, there was no denying he would be a hell of a talent--he needed time and maturity.

The kid had his cell phone in his hand. “Hey Sam, I just got a text from Tommy. He wanted me to ask you to call him when you get a chance.”

I looked at Rip. “Tommy? Cornell? That’s weird. Usually it’s Joel Bryant who calls when he’s looking for a scouting report.”

Rip looked at me and winked. “There’s opportunity right now Sam. Maybe the biggest opportunity in the history of the business.” He puffed his cigar again.

December 2012

MAW Offices

9:30 PM

The last few weeks had been a whirlwind. After accepting Tommy Cornell’s offer to be the new head booker, I had been flying coast-to-coast, coordinating plans with out-going booker Joel Bryant on TCW’s end, and in-coming owner Steve Flash on MAW’s end. I didn’t want to short change either promotion, as both would be vital to the vision Rip and I began laying out over Thanksgiving weekend.

SWF was running their Christmas Clash event tonight and I had the PPV playing in the office as I packed some things up. I was genuinely rooting for Jerry Eisen to succeed; he was a nice kid with a good head on his shoulders. I hadn’t talked to him in maybe five years, but I had no doubt between Peter and Rich, the kid would be okay.

Eric on the other hand...what could I say about Eric? He was on the screen now, potatoing the hell out of poor Tom Gilmore. I tried to show the kid some things during that whole “Election” mess--but he wouldn’t hear it. Rich knew it too--he tried to have Phillip Roberts work with him before every show. Eric wouldn’t listen; the kid thought he knew everything.

Suddenly it seemed as though the TV volume jumped up and I could hear the crowd getting hot. Gilmore was making his comeback and the fans were eating it up. Looking at the screen, I understood why--Tom had enough and was giving Eric some serious receipts. Eric was always one to dish it out and complain when the boys hit him back. Watching Tom lay those stiff kicks in made me smile. Served the kid right for trying to take liberties with a guy like Gilmore--he was a pro and tough as leather.

I knew Eric well enough to know that this was only going to be the beginning--the real fight was going to be in the dressing room afterwards.

Good luck dealing with that one Jerry. You're in for a long night...

1:35 AM

I had been asleep almost an hour when the phone woke me. Who the hell was calling now? I looked down and saw “Tom Gilmore” flashing on the screen...

SWF News:

With Richard Eisen stepping down just two weeks ago as CEO of SWF, it’s interesting to see what son Jerry does in his new capacity as man-in-charge. ScoopSlam.com can confirm that Peter Michaels will remain in charge of booking for the forseeable future. Otherwise, Jerry Eisen is very much a wildcard to both fans and insiders.

One thing is for sure, we will all learn a lot about the new CEO in how he handles the Angry Gilmore situation. As reported on this site a few weeks ago, with less than a month left on his contract, Gilmore and wife Jessie have been unhappy with both the direction of his character and the handling of the Eric Eisen incident from Christmas Clash.

More on this story as it develops...

TCW News:

ScoopSlam.com has learned that Sam Keith, Tommy Cornell, and Joel Bryant have had round-the-clock meetings since the holiday season. It should be interesting to see how the product changes with Keith’s booking influence. Many fans are still doubtful following Keith’s disastrous run with the book in SWF.

The company made some firings and hirings within the last 24 hours as well. We can confirm that TCW have released personality Jasmine Saunders and agent Warlord Pain from their contracts. Former CGC champion Ed Monton has been brought in to help with road agent duties.

ScoopSlam.com has it on good authority that TCW has entered negotiations with top prospect Kirk Jameson and international sensation, American Elemental as well. Neither have signed a contract as of this posting. As usual, more as we get it…

I don't know enough of TCW to make any predictions, but...

Jay Chord: I know you said he had to pay his dues, but I still see him take this one.

Bach/Ino/Taylor: with Rahn taking the fall

Rick Law: He's going to lay down the law!

The New Wave: Not sure who is face or heel, and while The Canadian Animals could provide some interesting segments with the belt, I still see The New Wave as the premiere team.

Golden: Anderson is in a tag team, and I see Wolf or someone interfering, getting Golden the win via DQ.

BREAKING NEWS!!! Joey Minnesota has altercation with a fan!

http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab203/ringrider/TCW/JoeyMinnesota-3_zps6826acad.jpg

Social Media is buzzing within the last 20 minutes as Joey Minnesota apparently got into a verbal altercation outside the Louisiana Auditorium. It seems that Minnesota was arriving to the arena in preparation for tonight’s show and was heckled by the fan in question. Joey was clearly irritated by the fans remarks and got into the fan’s face offering to “fight him.”

Mighty Mo and Guide (of the New Wave) apparently restrained the irritated Minnesota and ushered him into the arena before the situation escalated any further.

Word going around backstage is that Minnesota will be written out of tonight’s episode of Total Wrestling as not to draw any more attention to the incident. No other word has yet been released for what kind of punishment Minnesota will expect from TCW management.

Wednesday Morning

January Week 1 2013

Tommy Cornell’s travel bus

A few years ago, Tommy had invested into a beautiful tour bus. It had become a mobile office where Tommy frequently held meetings with the “real Syndicate” of TCW.

“The Real Syndicate” was small group of Tommy’s most trusted advisors that discussed both creative and business strategy for the company’s long-term aspirations. Joel Bryant and Robert Oxford, the two stalwarts of the group, often don’t get enough credit for TCW’s existence. Even dating back to Tommy signing with HGC in 1997, it was Robert and Joel who took him under their wing and nurtured both a fantastic in-ring performer, and the bright businessman and leader that Tommy had grown into.

While Robert and Joel were always there, it wasn’t unusual for them to include some other talent from time-to-time. RDJ would pop in and out, Tommy might have Wolf sitting in on a session, and I would occasionally pitch in some feedback during my first go around with the company. Today, we didn’t offer to include anyone else.

“Alright, I’ll say it. Last night was the drizzling shits.” I said. Tommy was sitting directly across from me sipping a protein shake. He didn’t say anything.

My comment hung in the air for a moment before Robert Oxford spoke. “I don’t think it was. I mean it wasn’t a standout episode or anything but we’re laying a foundation here.” He motioned to Tommy. “I think you guys are selling the program with Rocky alright. I also think Ricky cut a good promo on Byran Vessey. That’s what we’re going to build Malice around. Hopefully Law and Minnesota draw some attention too, but otherwise it’s going to be those two matches generating buy-rates.”

Tommy nodded. “I agree. I think the show last night was fine. But since you mentioned it my concern is Joey Minnesota’s face is all over the bloody dirt sheets.” Tommy was clearly not pleased about the fan incident.

I nodded in agreement. “He’s a problem, no doubt about it. I tried talking with him last night about what happened. I don’t know if I got through to him. I didn’t want to start breaking his balls too bad my first night on the job, so I’m not going to pursue anything more than that at the moment. I’m going to wrangle him, I just need a bit of time.”

Tommy nodded. “Alright, you handle it mate. How about the contracts we offered last week. Any one give us any commitments?”

It was Joel who spoke next. “I heard from American Elemental. He told me he signed with Supreme. He didn’t even give me a chance to offer a counter--I guess Peter Michaels said sign it now or walk away.”

“Really? American Elemental in SWF? Doesn’t seem like a Peter Michaels guy to me.” Robert said.

“Flash told me a lot of indy guys have been approached by the SWF in the last few weeks. They’re grabbing up talent across the country.” I informed them.

Tommy smiled. “That a boy Jerry. Bloat your roster.” Tommy counted every penny and was utterly convinced that eventually SWF would spend themselves to death. “What else do we have on the agenda today?”

I had an idea I was sitting on since Rip and I talked in the fall and now was as good of a time as any to bring it up. “I have something. The Confederation of Territories was a good thing for MAW. We were able to bring in some quality talent from different promotions. It was mutually beneficial.”

Tommy interrupted me, seeing where I was going. “You think we can do that on this level, mate?”

“I do.” I answered. “I think Dan Stone is exactly the kind of dance partner we need right now. Cornell vs. McFly is the kind of dream match-up that generates some serious PPV buys.”

Everyone was quiet, visions of a Cornell/McFly classic playing out in everyone’s mind. “I could get behind that mate. I could get behind that…” Tommy leaned back and took a sip of his protein shake.

“Who do we know there?” Joel asked. “It’d be nice to get a few feelers out discreetly. No need to make this kind of thing public until the time is right. Besides, I don’t know how Dan feels with Edd here. It’s not good between them right now.”

“I talk to Craig Prince a few times a year.” Robert said. “He’s working as an agent there. I trust him to keep things out of the spotlight. He’ll know where we stand in the middle of the Stone family dynamic and how open Dan will be to working with us.”

Cornell was still smiling at the idea of working with McFly. “I want to make this happen mates. I want Sean McFly at Total Mayhem this year.”

January Wk 2 2013

Tuesday Afternoon

Virginia Park Fields

“I spoke to Larry Vessey yesterday.” I said. I was sitting with Joel Bryant at catering before tonight’s show. “I told him we were in the market for an interview man and he suggested Ernie Turner, are you familiar with him?”

Joel shook his head no while chewing a mouthful of grilled chicken.

“He works color for Larry. I’ve met him a handful times, seems like a nice enough guy. Larry said he could handle a microphone and would bring some energy to the broadcast. I thought we could give him a try next week doing some basic sideline reporter stuff--”

I was caught short when Ray Johnson, one of TCW’s veteran referees, came over to the table. “Hey Sam, you better get over there.” He signaled over to another table where Joey Minnesota was leaning in on Edd Stone.

“You think you’re such a funny guy, don’t you Stone?” Minnesota was inches from Edd’s face.

Edd wasn’t intimidated. “As a matter of fact, I do think I’m funny.” Edd stood up now, smirking. This was escalating quickly. “So what? Is this the part where you try to stretch me?”

“I’ll rip your damn arms off!” Minnesota replied.

“JOEY! EDD! THAT’S ENOUGH!” I barked as I made my way over. I clamped my arm over Minnesota’s shoulders. “We’re taking a walk. You’ve got to cool down…” I said as I led him out of catering…

I was hoping some people might be interested in giving me some feedback on formatting for the shows and whatnot. I worry that they are too text heavy while simultaneously worrying that the matches aren't descriptive enough.

I plan on using pictures and a bit of a different style for the PPVs so that they stand out.

I have lot of the same questions about the TCW.com, ScoopSlam.com, and the backstage segments. Is the variety of posts overkill? I'm trying to get information out in a variety of interesting ways, but again, I don't want to burn out my readers either.

Thanks for any and all feedback and comments.
