JULY 1994 - THE SUMMER OF SHAME

It was the summer of 1994; Bill Clinton was a midst his first tenure in the oval office, gas was just north of a US dollar, and Vince McMahon was watching his empire crack beneath its very foundation. Engulfed in a steroid allegation that would see the former crowned jewel of the World Wrestling Federation Hulk Hogan testify against the creator of 'Hulkamania'. The misfortunes of McMahon would continue as Hogan would prepare to make his World Championship Wrestling debut that would sure to spike the needle in the promotions popularity. The primary competitor to McMahon's heir had just gained arguably the most recognizable professional wrestler in history and Vince was in serious damage control.

Looking for some sort of hope, Vince looked to an unlikely person to help him and the World Wrestling Federation rise - Jim Ross. The story of Ross in professional wrestling goes back nearly two decades, but it was no more than four months ago that JR would find himself unemployed and out of the announcing booth. Taking his talents to Smokey Mountain Wrestling, Ross would sit by and idly wait for the call from Vince now bringing him back into the mix. Noting his wealth of knowledge in the industry, McMahon would bring Ross on board not just as an announcer to take his place during the trial, but also as a booker. Entrusting him with the opportunity to take the WWF back to the top as the perennial source of wrestling in the world.

Now entering into July, the current roster looks to hold a chunk of talent along with some pretty viable options in the department of reliability. Sitting atop the mountain is WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bret 'The Hitman' Hart who won the strap back at WrestleMania X over Yokozuna. Just two hours prior, Hart's younger brother Owen Hart would successfully pin his brother in the opening contest, but be forced to watch him rise to the top for a second time and become the true king of hearts. Hot on Bret's tail though is Intercontinental champion and bodyguard for the 'Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels, Diesel. Standing at 6'11" and just north of 300 lbs, big daddy cool is not a man to be messed with, but the two would have their meeting last month in the King of the Ring.

Landscape of the WWF

Bret 'The Hitman' Hart (2)

Riding high for the past year, Bret Hart's journey would finally come to a head at WrestleMania X when he defeated Yokozuna to win the WWF World Heavyweight championship. Since then, Hart has found himself in the path of another big man, this time in the form of Diesel - a man who has seen a plethora of achievements in his short time with the WWF. Defeating Razor Ramon on an episode of Superstars of Wrestling, Diesel would look to take the next step and challenge Bret Hart for the championship at King of the Ring. While the big man looked poised to win his first WWF Championship with help from HBK, an interfering Jim Neidhart would cause a disqualification but keep the belt securely around the waist of Canada's finest export. While Bret may still have the championship, one has to wonder if we could be possibly looking at a new champion in Diesel.

'Big Daddy Cool' Diesel

Being the bodyguard of Shawn Michaels isn't such a bad thing and Diesel has proved that ten fold over the course of the past three months. While the big man debuted just over a year ago, he's really found his place as of lately dominating the competition and showing just what he is capable of. Even though he didn't win the championship in the process, Diesel still holds a victory over 'The Hitman' and thus all the leverage he needs to lobby for another shot at the belt. All the remains to be asked is if the presence of Shawn Michaels at ringside will now be neutralized by Hart's brother-in-law Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart.

1994 KING OF THE RING

'The Bad Guy' Razor Ramon

There was nothing bad about Razor Ramon's performance at the WWF's most recent Pay-Per-View: King of the Ring where he would earn said title and show the world that the bad guy was better than ever. His road wouldn't be easy either as he would successfully defeat a very athletic Bam Bam Bigelow, Irwin R. Schyster, and then Owen Hart in the finals. With the spotlight on both Owen and Razor, the two would go at it in a back and forth match for the first ten minutes before double R would connect with a Razor's Edge and crush the dreams of Owen Hart to follow in his brothers footsteps from one year prior. Now with the title of King Razor, does the former IC champion have a quarrel with not only Diesel, but possibly the WWF Champion Bret Hart as well?

The Undertaker

The World Wrestling Federation was a quiet place for five months following the casket match between Yokozuna and the Undertaker at the Royal Rumble. With the WWF Championship on the line, the Yoko would place the body of the deadman into the casket. As every would settle down, the Undertaker would appear on the video screen deeming that his spirit would live on and he would return. That promise came true recently when Ted Dibiase announced to the entire world that his newest client would indeed be the Undertaker. These rumors would be confirmed on a recent episode of Superstars when Dibiase would bring the Undertaker out during his interview on the Heartbreak Hotel. Now at the control of Ted Dibiase, what does the future have in store for the deadman or the World Wrestling Federation for that matter.

'Made in the U.S.A" Lex Luger

If there is one man on the roster who has a lot to prove right now, it's Lex Luger. 'Made in the U.S.A" had his chance at the WWF Championship at WrestleMania of all places where he lost to Yokozuna prior to the big man's eventual loss to Bret Hart. Left picking up the pieces, Lex has been fairly quiet as of recent, engaging in small brushes with the likes of Crush. That doesn't mean that the man with the largest arms in the WWF can't turn it around and rack the competition in route to a possible championship match.

Owen Hart

For some people, being the brother of the WWF Champion would be a pretty cool thing, but for Owen Hart it's a living nightmare. Clutching at every opportunity to prove his excellence not just in the ring, but as a Hart, Owen's gotten into his own head recently and it would cost him his opportunity as King of the Ring. Late in his tournament finals match with Razor Ramon, Owen would push referee Earl Hebner after a close two count arguing that it was actually a three. With his back to the bad guy, Razor would scoop Owen onto his back and plant him with a Razor's Edge to win the tournament. As we enter into the dog days of summer, Owen Hart now must take the heat that comes with once again coming up just short.

WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS

The Headshrinkers [samu & Fatu]

After two years in the World Wrestling Federation, the Headshrinkers would win the WWF Tag Team Championship, but under the leadership of Captain Lou Albano. With one of the greatest managers in professional wrestling at their side, the two Samoans look to be unstoppable - especially after their victory over Yokozuna and Crush at the King of the Ring. By far the best tag team that the WWF has to offer at the moment, the Headshrinkers look to keep a stranglehold on the belts as they look for a big time match at SummerSlam.

'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels

Healing himself up slowly but surely, Shawn Michaels has kept himself relevant not only thanks to the 6'11" wrecking ball he walks around with, but also because of his talk show the "Heartbreak Hotel". While many can say what they want about HBK, him and Razor Ramon stole the show at WrestleMania in an incredible ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental championship. Even in a losing effort Michaels would still come out of the match looking like a champion, putting on a performance that will be remembered for years to come. As the summer starts to hit though and the road to SummerSlam steps into full gear, there's no question that Michaels will look to place himself in a position to be in the lime light once more.

Irwin R. Schyster

You would never think that IRS stands among some of the very best the WWF has to offer, but with the guidance of the 'Million Dollar Man' Ted Dibiase, Schyster found himself in contention to possibly win this years King of the Ring. While he wouldn't, the match with Razor would show that he could hang with the best as his loss would be to the eventual champion. There are a lot of things money can buy, and if there's one thing IRS is known for, it's capitalizing on the capital.

WWF WOMEN'S CHAMPION

http://i58.tinypic.com/2efrk2b.jpg

Alundra Blayze

As of right now, Alundra Blayze stands as the only WWF Women's champion in the companies history. Defeating Heidi Lee Morgan in the tournament finals back in December of 1993, Blayze hasn't seen much in the way of competitive talent to face. That isn't a downplay on the level of competition she has faced, but rather just how dominant she is. With an opportunity to showcase women's wrestling to the world, Blayze now has the attention of everyone and looks to swing for the fences.

The Best of the Rest

1-2-3 Kid | Adam Bomb | Bam Bam Bigelow | Barry Horowitz | Bart Gunn | Bastion Booger | Billy Gunn | Bob Backlund | Bushwacker Butch | Bushwacker Luke | Capt. Lou Albano | Crush | Duke Droese | Jacques Rougeau | Jeff Jarrett | Jerry Lawler | Jim Cornette | Jim Neidhart | Jim Powers | Koko B. Ware | Kwang | Mabel | Mike Sharp | Mo | Paul Bearer | Pierre | Rick Martel | Ricky Morton | Robert Gibson | Sparky Plugg | Steven Dunn | Tatanka | Ted Dibiase | The Barbarian | Timothy Well | Typhoon | Virgil| Yokozna

There was no question that a war was brewing between the World Wrestling Federation and "the boys down south" World Championship Wrestling. The eminent arrival of Hulk Hogan looked like it could spell eventual doom for Vince McMahon, but the wild card would be Jim Ross. While creative needed a boost, this was the man for the job. All that was needed was for the calender to hit July for the contract to be official and the creative department would see a familiar, yet new face.

Before that could happen though, the WWF would put on their eighth annual King of the Ring tournament on Pay-Per-View, live from Baltimore, Maryland. It was the third Sunday in July and the landscape heading into SummerSlam looked to be under construction.
