WCW Monday Nitro Preview

Week 1, January 2000

After defeating Goldberg by help from his nWo brothers and putting Goldberg on the injury list, Bret "The Hitman" Hart has announced that he will be on Nitro tonight to announce what's next for him and his World Heavyweight Championship.

Also, an 8-Team Tournament has been announced to find the next WCW World Tag Team Champions. Tonight the first two matches of the tournament will take place, as The Filthy Animals' Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio Jr. takes on The Blue Bloods, and Parka & Kaz will face Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko of The Revolution. Which teams will be the first to advance to the semi-finals??

And, at Starrcade the United States Championship got vacated and a new champion were to be found when Chris Benoit, who was originally scheduled to compete for the title, faced Jeff Jarrett in a memorable Ladder match. Jarrett used a steal chair to prevent Benoit from unhooking the title and thereby became the new United States Champion himself. Immediately after the match Benoit went to the WCW Commissioner's office and said that he was originally scheduled for the title match, and therefor felt entitled to a rematch. A rematch which Commissioner Roddy Piper granted him for the next Pay-Per View, Souled Out. It's also been announced that tonight both Jarrett and Benoit will be in single's competition. Will we see this rivalry revolve tonight??

And last, the first ever WCW Hardcore Champion Norman Smiley will defend his title tonight, as he takes on Lash LeRoux.

Thanks for your predictions and the few comments already guys. Just wanted to say that some of you have chosen to predict Bret Hart's opponent for Nitro's main event to be someone from the injury list... Don't know if it's you guys hoping/predicting they'll return from injury or if it's because you didn't look at the injury list, but I just thought I'd point it out :)

WCW Monday Nitro

Week 1, January 2000

Jacksonville, FL - Attendance: 11,000

Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay open the show welcoming everyone to a new millennium, a new year, and new season, and perhaps a new era starting under the newly appointed WCW Commissioner, Roddy Piper. They also talk about the announcement that a tournament to find new WCW World Tag Team Champions will start tonight. C-

nWo 2000's music hits and out comes the World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart, accompanied by his nWo brothers. Bret Hart says that it seems like such a long time ago that he defeated Goldberg to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. It's in fact an entire millennium ago. As he receives heat from the crowd, Hart says that just like Goldberg has been sent home and out of the active roster, Goldberg is also out of the World title picture and Hart therefor needs new competition.

Terry Funk's music hits which puts weird look on the face of the nWo members. Funk goes on the mic and says that he's not out there to demand a title shot, but he is out there to challenge Bret Hart to a match for tonight. The nWo members jokes a bit around and almost kind of mocks Funk, and Hart then goes on the mic and says that Funk has no business being out there.

Suddenly Roddy Piper's music interrupts the World Heavyweight Champion, and out comes the new commissioner. Piper says that the entire nWo members coming out to the ring together actually makes his job a little bit easier, because he actually needs to talk to a couple of them. First he addresses the new United States Champion Jeff Jarrett, and tells him that as he already know Piper has granted Chris Benoit a rematch for the United States Championship at WCW Souled Out, and tonight both Benoit and Jarrett will be in single competition. Piper says that it'll be Chris Benoit taking on Hugh Morrus, while Jeff Jarrett will go one-on-one with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. He then addresses Bret Hart and adds that Hart will indeed be taking on Terry Funk in tonight's main event. C+

Back at the announcer's table, the commentators talk about the three matches just made by the new WCW Commissioner Roddy Piper. They then announce that it's time for the first Round 1 match in the WCW World Tag Team Championship Tournament. D

WCW World Tag Team Championship Tournament - Round 1

Filthy Animals vs. The Blue Bloods

Rey Mysterio and David Taylor starts the match. In a match that proofs to equal, Mysterio and Kidman uses frequent tags and try to make the best out of using their quickness and high flying abilities. Taylor eventually gets the advantage on Kidman, and The Blue Bloods isolates him for a couple of minutes. Kidman manages to block a charging Regal in the corner before hitting a Diving Crossbody on him, setting up for the tag to Mysterio. After Mysterio hits the ring and hits both Regal and Taylor with everything from every direction, momentum swifts back and forth until Mysterio manages to hit the 619 on Taylor and then following it up with the Springboard Leg Drop and the cover for the win at 7.02. C

We see the Filthy Animals celebrate advancing in the tournament, before we're taken back to the announcer's table where Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay talk about what we just saw, and Schiavone and Tenay congratulates the Filthy Animals on a good victory. C-

A hype video of Norman Smiley's 1 month long reign as the very first WCW Hardcore Champion. As it ends, the commentators says that Smiley will defend the Hardcore title up next. D-

<a href="

Hardcore Championship

Norman Smiley © vs. Lash LeRoux

As the bell rings both wrestlers goes for weapons. The momentum keeps going back and forth between them, as weapons like kendo sticks, steel chairs and trashcan lids are being used. The finish comes when LeRoux charges Smiley at the ropes with a trashcan, but as he goes to hit Smiley with it Smiley ducks and the trashcan bounces off the ropes and hits LeRoux in the head and he goes down. Smiley sees that LeRoux basically knocked himself out and goes for the pin and gets the win to retain in this short but decent match at 5.21. E

As Norman Smiley celebrates surviving yet another hardcore match, the commentators talk shortly about the match and Smiley's title reign with Heenan saying that Smiley is a disgrace to the Hardcore Division, before they changes the subject and focus on what's up next, the seconds Round 1 match in the tag team tournament, Parka & Kaz vs. The Revolution. D

WCW World Tag Team Championship Tournament - Round 1

Parka & Kaz vs. The Revolution

The bell rings with Kaz Hayashi and Dean Malenko starting out. The two lightweights puts on a good performance with highly paced action, until Malenko manages to take Kaz down. Malenko tags Saturn in and from there on they manages to isolate Kaz, even though he had a couple of shots at regaining some momentum but every time he got close they stopped him. Eventually Kaz manages to get some kicks in on Saturn. Kaz goes for a kick to the stomach but Saturn catches the foot, but Kaz manages to hit an Enzuigiri to take both of them down. Saturn tries to prevent Kaz from tagging, but he gets the tag and La Parka takes the ring by storm with kicks, highly paced moves and even hits a Springboard Moonsault on Saturn. Parka tags in Kaz and they hit a double team move on Saturn. Saturn stumbles to his feet but Kaz hits him back down with Spinning Heel Kick. Parka signals for Kaz and then Kaz tags in Parka who goes upon the turnbuckle. Parka goes for his La Parkinator, but Saturn gets his legs up. Saturn gets up and tags Malenko and then charges Kaz off the apron. Malenko puts Parka in the Texas Cloverleaf and has no choice but to tap, giving The Revolution the submission win at 7.55. D

As we see The Revolution celebrating advancing in the tournament, we go backstage where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is standing by with Terry Funk. Funk gives an interview about how a new millennium can mean new things, and he wants to prove that he still has what it takes to be up there with the best. C+

<a href="

http://s715.photobucket.com/user/JuulDK/media/WCW%20Dynasty/ChrisBenoit.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww160/JuulDK/WCW%20Dynasty/ChrisBenoit.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo ChrisBenoit.jpg"/></a> VS <a href="http://s715.photobucket.com/user/JuulDK/media/WCW%20Dynasty/HughMorrus.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww160/JuulDK/WCW%20Dynasty/HughMorrus.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo HughMorrus.jpg"/></a>

Chris Benoit vs. Hugh Morrus

The bell rings and after some grapples and exchanges, Morrus manages to get some momentum going. Morrus keeps his momentum going for a minute or two, but then Benoit ducks a Diving Clothesline attempt from Morrus shifting the momentum. Benoit lands a bunch of punches and backhand chops before perfectly executing a couple of suplex variations. The finish comes when Morrus regains a bit of momentum and picks Benoit up for a Running Powerslam, but Benoit slides out of it and down behind Morrus. Morrus turns around and charges Benoit, but Benoit catches Morrus' arm and manages to get him down and lock in the Crippler Crossface. Morrus almost immediately tapped, giving Benoit the win at 7.15. C-

Chris Benoit celebrates the win and the commentators talk about the match. Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay says that Benoit looks great and ready, while Heenan voices his opinion that Benoit shouldn't even get a rematch against Jeff Jarrett at Souled Out, seeing as Benoit wasn't the champion when Jarett beat him at Starrcade. C

Backstage we see Gene Okerlund again, this time standing by with the United States Champion Jeff Jarrett. As Okerlund mentions that Benoit looked good in his match moments ago, Jarrett says that he's right. Benoit did look good, but Jarrett is always better than good. That's why Jarrett beat Benoit at Starrcade, and even though Benoit shouldn't even have a rematch without earning it that is also why Jarrett will beat him again at Souled Out. Just like Jarrett will beat Jim Duggan in a few moments. C

<a href="

http://s715.photobucket.com/user/JuulDK/media/WCW%20Dynasty/JimDuggan.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww160/JuulDK/WCW%20Dynasty/JimDuggan.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo JimDuggan.jpg"/></a> VS <a href="http://s715.photobucket.com/user/JuulDK/media/WCW%20Dynasty/JeffJarrett.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww160/JuulDK/WCW%20Dynasty/JeffJarrett.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo JeffJarrett.jpg"/></a>

Jim Duggan vs. Jeff Jarrett

As the match gets underway, Jarrett and Duggan gets in a couple of lock ups, but Duggan tries to play around with Jarrett and then does his trademark "Hooo!"-chant to get the crowd going. As the match really gets underway, Jarrett gets the upper hand at first. Duggan manages to turn the momentum a couple of minutes into the match and keeps it going with a couple of Back Body Drops, an Atomic Drop and then hits a Running Powerslam and covers, but Jarrett kicks out. As Jarrett gets to his feet and stumbles around, Duggan hits a Scoop Slam. Duggan gets the crowd going and then goes for the Old Glory Knee Drop, but Jarrett sees it coming and avoids it. Jarrett quickly gets up and as Duggan gets up while holding his knee, Jarrett grabs him and hits The Stroke and covers for the win at 6.44. C-

After the match we again go back to "Mean" Gene, who this time is standing by with the World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart. Okerlund asks Hart about his upcoming match with Funk, but Hart actually seems offended by the question. Hart says that Funk is sticking his old nose into a league that he haven't belonged in for years. Hart says that Funk said earlier that a new millennium could mean new things, but that that is exactly why Funk should stay out of the big boy's playing ground and sick to what he knows best, the 1980's and stick beatings. Hart says that Funk wants to play with the best, and then says that Funk should be careful what he wishes for because in a couple of minutes "The Best There Is, There Best There Was and The Best There Ever Will Be" will knock him back down to the gutter. C

<a href="

Terry Funk vs. Bret Hart

As the bell rings the first half minute sees Hart trash talking Funk. As they get face to face Hart slaps Funk, which gets the match going as Funk charges Hart. Funk starts throwing punches to Hart and backs him into the corner. Hart tells the referee to get Funk off him as he is in between the ropes, and as the referee gets Funk to back off Hart takes a breather outside of the ring for a couple of seconds. Hart gets back into the ring and the two locks up, and Hart immediately knees Funk in the stomach and beats him down. From thereon Hart keeps momentum for four to five minutes, hitting Funk with Suplexes, Dropkicks, Legsweeps, and also locks Funk in a Figure Four Leglock and slaps him a bit until Funk manages to get to the ropes. Hart keeps the momentum going for nearly a minute more, until suddenly Funk starts hitting back. They exchange lefts and rights and suddenly ducks a swing from Hart, grabs Hart from behind and connects with an Atomic Drop. Funk waits for Hart to get up and then catches him in a Sleeper Hold, but Hart quickly gets out of the hold and hits a DDT. Hart gets up and looks at Funk, then looks back towards the ramp and suddenly out comes nWo members, The Outsiders Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. Nash and Hall enters the ring and starts stomping on Funk and even chasing the referee out of the ring. The match ends as No Contest at 10.21. C+

Hall picks up Funk and holds him for Hart, but Hart looks at Nash and Nash then kicks Funk in the stomach, sets him up and hits a huge Jackknife Powerbomb on him. Hart, Hall and Nash looks down at Funk and mocks him before their music hits. They pose in the ring over the motionless Terry Funk. C

WCW Thursday Thunder Preview

Week 1, January 2000

This past Monday on Nitro, World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart mentioned that he has no #1 Contender and then ended up in a match against Terry Funk, only for Hart's nWo brothers Kevin Nash and Scott Hall to interfere and take take out Funk. As Thunder hits the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum, will we get an explanation or a reaction from any of the involved??

Also, during the week United States Champion Jeff Jarrett has announced that WCW Commissioner Roddy Piper has agreed to let Jarrett pick Chris Benoit's opponent for tonight. Jarrett didn't reveal who Benoit's opponent is going to be, but he did reveal that it will be a member of nWo. Who will face Benoit, and will Benoit keep building momentum on the road to Souled Out??

And, on Nitro Filthy Animals and The Revolution became the two first teams to qualify from the first round of the WCW World Tag Team Championship Tournament. Tonight the last two semifinalists will be found, when The Varsity Club takes on Creative Control, and the team of Juventud Guerrera and Chavo Guerrero Jr faces David Flair and Crowbar. Who will fill the last two spots in the semifinals??

And last, Diamond Dallas Page will be in action for the first time in the new millennium as he faces the big muscleman Ice Train.
