The last three posts are fascinating to me.

shipshirt has gone for a big bruiser look for the two ozzie guys which makes sense since they are both like 6'5 - 6'6 tall. They just look right.

bratt99 has made them leaner - I really like his Reggie. Nathan looks like he has islander in him which ironically makes more sense as Australia should really have more pacific islanders than black workers. Nathan now looks like a big mean Tongan to me and that's good.

esteel meanwhile has given us a really great "The Gladiator", I think of you as a mask guy but that shows you are anything but a one trick pony.

They all have really nice interesting personal flavours. That's the beauty of the people rendering in this forum. People use similar settings so the general look is consistent but the personal styles are all personal to the people doing the render.

Esteel, I love that Gladiator. What hair prop did you use for that? Also...who is the Gladiator?!?!

That was a cool post Alpha.
thanks shipshirt

Yeah Ajax is great hair.

willywillywilly - you haven't been using the product very long. It takes time for people to find their voice. I remember not too long ago a guy who came in posting cartoonishly big guys with ordinary lighting and skintones. People gave him the default lighting settings and that helped and he started to play around with that and within a few months we all saw how good King Bison got. He still loved the big guys but he's worked out ways to make each of them feel like individuals.

I would stick with Michael 4 and Genesis and Genesis 2 at most. The MAJORITY of renders I do is M4 and Genesis. They are really versatile and pliable, for lack of a better term.

Don't use Iray. Stick with 3Delight

For textures, I find the Jepes line to be very good. Especially their SSS and HSS ones. I use Omnifreaker UberSurface2 but you can also use the one that comes with the Elite textures (also good to use) called HumanSurface and it's all about the same, to be honest.

I use JSilver's lighting number 3a which you can find in the Render Starter Kit: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1s84lltu4h86kl8/lQQctpRgac

Here's the little mini tutorial I sent WillR0ck back in the day but I didn't make it up. You'll find it in many places online:

I'll use M4 (The Jepes line of Mats for M4 all have SSS options) for the example:

I load the SSS mat on the M4 figure and then select the figure.

Go to the Surfaces tab and highlights all from 1_Eyebrow to 3_SkinLeg

Then select the Omnifreaker human surface shader ( I believe it's included with the Elite Mats for M4). Ctrl-left click on the shader and under the Map Settings dropdown change it from Replace to Ignore. Then click Accept

That will cause a very bright look to the figure. You can either render from this or do what I do and turn the Specular setting down to 10% (It makes it a little less shiny). There are other settings you can change such as Bump, Specular2, Velvet and Subsurface but I stopped messing with those as just altering the Specular gives me the look I like.

I think using the Omnifreaker shader kind of gives any mat an SSS finish to it. I use it even on mats that aren't SSS.

If you are using an M5 figure, you would do all the same steps. I think the settings you highlight are just under Legacy Textures on the Surface tab.

You can't go backwards in generations (You can't use a strictly Genesis mat for M4, etc) but you can go forward. You can use a M4 mat for Genesis you just have to change the UV setting on the surface tab to Michael4.
